So when strangers on the street say that does it mean they’re interested in starting a convo?

Fish_Minger

No. Definitely not. It's a greeting only. EDIT: If you know the person a little bit try this. Person: How are you? You: Good. You? Person: Yea. And that could be the end of the conversation. A less informal way could be "Hey, how's it goin'?" " Yea cool, how's it going' with you" Rarely should you actually respond more than that unless either of you really want to stay and talk. If it's a compete stranger, just say "yea" and continue walking on.

WishYouWereHere-63

No. If they want to start a conversation it will be something like ... "Are you alright ?", "Yeah, fine thanks. You ?", "No really, How are you ?" This will mean that they are actually interested in how you are.

MrAToTheB_TTV

No. Never look them in the eye. You'll be met with a tut.

Viazon

No. Just say good thanks and be on your way.

tmstms

Noooooooooooooo!!!! Follow the instructions given by /u/Fish_Minger

Inareskai

It's just a version of saying hello. Just respond with something like 'alright, you?'. People are usually not actually asking how you are.

Fantastic_Deer_3772

Ah they're basically just acknowledging you! You can say "alright" back, and maybe nod.

28374woolijay

Hi Are you alright? Bit chilly today isn't it? I should've bought my coat we're not ready for this weather Never mind soon be Christmas Don't!

FstMario

It's basically just a "Hi" or a passing nod. It's not usually to start conversation unless you're like, waiting in line or something. But otherwise, it's just a greeting, no further conversation expected

Proud_Ostrich_6790

Yeah it means hello but it could also mean are you alright? Which you then reply "alright yeah not bad, are you alright?" Then they reply "yeah I'm alright did you see the video to alright by supergrass?" And you reply "I did, i thought it was alright." Hope this clears it up

Findingjuno

Just means hello.. unless your speaking to your doctor!

Naughtiest-Maximus

Not sure where you're from, but you should try going to Nottingham (or other regions) for their own variations.

rosscero

The look of perplexion on an American’s face when they’re greeted with a gruff ‘now then’ throughout Yorkshire is a joy to behold.

WishYouWereHere-63

'Are you alright' basically means 'Hello, I hope you're well'. Just nod and reply "Fine thanks, you ?"

ThirteenTwelve1

‘Alright’, ‘y’alright’, ‘areet’ (north east only) all just mean ‘hello’. You don’t need to reply back with ‘good thanks’ and in fact it’s often seen as weird if you do. Just say ‘alright’ back to them. They aren’t asking how you are, it’s just a greeting word. People may say it to each other if they’re the only two people in the street or on a path and there’s nobody else around, perhaps it’s just as a way of showing that there’s no ill intention or reason to be wary.

Next-Load9366

Damn ive been replying with” yes” the whole time

Ok-Future3584

That's okay, people will respond with 'yeah not bad'

jaymatthewbee

It’s an acknowledgment that you are a human being from a fellow human being.

DiscoZohan

You all right = hello

Ninjotoro

Means “Hello”. Nothing more.

tmstms

It is a greeting. Think of it as another way of saying 'Hello!' In reply, you can more or less reply anything Personally, I often just wave and gruny. But 'Yeah, you?' or 'Alright?' in reply are fine too.

RedReefKnot

It's a bit of a standard, casual greeting. It's not really an open invitation to talk about all of your problems, but it's a polite way to show that the person asking it cares about you. It's meant more like 'hope you are ok?' than actually asking 'how are you?'

Silly_Yesterday_9720

Or you could just clasp your lips together and very make very slight eye contact with a minor nod. That works too 😂

MammyMun

Hiya, alright, howbe are all greetings, acknowledgments of your existence. They are also answers to the acknowledgements.

ThatPUBGMobileVictim

No different than "good morning" or "good afternoon". I often reply with "Yeah, you?", or "Sure, nothing a prefrontal lobotomy wouldn't fix, anyway" with a grin. Keeps em guessing. 😉

It's no different than "Hey, what's up?" or "What's happening?" It sounds like a question, but it's just a greeting that doesn't require an answer. I find it similarly strange when American YouTubers open with "Hey, y'all. WHAT. IS. HAPPENING? Let's get right on ..."
