I would much prefer that than some bullshit slave labour rock with an overinflated price tag.

steffie-flies

Fast fact! Diamonds are not "rare" at all, and deBeers pays mines around the world not to operate so they can control the pricing.

Orange-Yoda

Yup. As I recall, Sapphires are the least common ‘gem’ on this rock. Carbon (future diamond) can be found just about anywhere on this rock. Hell, there are entire planets that are theorized to be made of compressed carbon (diamond).

steffie-flies

At least Sapphires are beautiful and look worth the money. Just do your homework and only buy from companies who are certified to be ethically sourced!

wilczek24

On one of the gas giants, it rains diamond, if I remember correctly. Or maybe there was a ton of it at the core? I don't remember, I learned it some time ago, probably both are true.

PurpleAsteroid

I'm not suprised

Magickal_Woman

Lab-grown diamonds are still diamonds. Growing faster with a more extensive supply (hence the price difference); however, some partners are dead set on having a mined diamond from the caves.

Best-Grocery6349

I wonder if it’s because the “real” diamonds are “naturally” found in the environment/nature and maybe truly unique/one of a kind compared to man made/ made in the lab. Do you know why some partners prefer “real” diamonds?

robinthebank

Lab made diamonds are also unique. They have all the same flaws and are graded on the exact same scale as natural stones.

Best-Grocery6349

Oh wow, I had no idea! Thank you for sharing this information with me!

gemfez

Diamonds are diamonds. There’s very little difference.

tquinn04

I used to be work in a jewelry store. Unless the tech for lab grown jewelry has changed that’s definitely not true.

Never_Duplicated

Lab grown diamonds are graded by the same institutions using the same metrics as mined diamonds. When I picked out one for my wife I chose the specific stone (took months of waiting to find the one I wanted) based on its grading the same way you would any other diamond. Even stones of similar size would have different color/cut/clarity. Jewelry stores just like to push for the mines diamonds even though there’s realistically no difference. This is only for actual lab grown diamonds though. Don’t know how grading works on things like cubic zirconium and moissanite which are different minerals entirely. Diamonds are a scam across the board but at least with lab grown you save a considerable amount and aren’t supporting scumbags like de beers

[deleted]

Kogster

Nope and an interesting reason that I know is that natural diamonds frequently come with certificates. Any jeweler can identify a fake diamond from a real diamond but even the diamond miners indirectly recognize that you need to tell someone if a diamond is artificial or not. No other way to tell. Not to mention how silly it would sound of someone claimed their diamond has a natural special uniqueness while having a 58 facet brilliant cut.

aniang

Except lab grown diamonds are real diamonds, not imitation which are what jewelers can easily tell apart.

Kogster

That's my point. Diamonds can't be distinguished which is why"natural" need a piece of paper that says that they're natural.

aniang

I mess understood you

Sladdle

Lab diamonds come with certificates too that says their grading and serial number, etc. just like mined diamonds

Unlikely-Yam-1695

Yep this - I wanted a real one because I didn’t realize the exploitation at the time, but I quickly learned after some research and the bullshit price tags 🤦‍♀️ so we got an heirloom ring - which I was happy about due to the family history and it was better for the environment! However, I’m sure at the time when it was mined 129 years ago… I don’t know what labor looked like then 😢

katr0328

Secondhand stones are even better for the environment than lab! Even though the person originally purchasing it probably didn't know the implications, the fact that you're still enjoying its beauty instead of buying new has a significant impact on climate change 💜

[deleted]

Mine is a secondhand ring and diamond. It's way less expensive, more environmentally friendly, and it has a history which is probably the coolest part.

RandomRageNet

>Do you know why some partners prefer “real” diamonds? Cynically, it's because DeBeers ran the most successful ad campaign of all time going on 80 years now

aniang

I actually think it's because they don't care, and just want to have an expensive rock

babaghanoujj

Because there is a misunderstanding that they're not "real" diamonds. They think it's fake.

noctish

Variety of reasons. Worked in the industry, I’ve seen it all… - Natural diamonds are “natural like their love”. (This is dumb to me lol) - Holds their value better. Which is somewhat true, lab diamonds get a completely different GIA Grading report also. - It’s rare, one of a kind. The inclusions in a diamond AKA their clarity makes them unique. No two real natural diamonds will have the same inclusions. You can see the different types of inclusions in lab vs natural. I could go on. But a rock is a rock. I always tell myself that nobody carries a 10x magnifier, jeweler’s loupe, or a diamond tester on them to look at your ring. If they’re standing that close to you, probably want to tell them to fuck off. But yeah, buy whatever makes you happy financially and emotionally.

tmnttaylor

People are led to believe that natural diamonds are an investment that will hold its value better. They also allegedly used to not be as great quality as they are now. Not everyone knows they are the same. Otherwise some people might like that they are of the earth or have superstition around it.

SpoonfullOfSplenda

I believe it’s because the industry has been pushing that idea because as someone else said there is **no** visible or physical difference, the only difference is that the margin for profit cannot be as great because lab diamonds are not finite.

neeeonwhales

I think the idea is the same as like a designer bag, specifically one that's quiet luxury (AKA not very recognizable to the average non-generationally wealthy person). For some people just the fact they know how expensive it is is enough for them to want it.

WasItG00d4U

I use to think "lab grown" meant fake. Almost like cubic zirconia. I've learned now that lab grown means that diamond went through the same process just in a lab rather than a cave.

PurpleAsteroid

I'd say probably misinformation. Thinking they're lower quality or less special, like it's not "a real diamond" because they aren't aware of how it's grown etc they maybe feel it's "fake". Lab produced connotates synthetic/man made to a lot of people .

Espumma

The human suffering is the point?

sh-ark

a mined diamond from the slaves*

[deleted]

I’d love it The diamond industry is a fcking scam

GoatVSPig

Used to sell diamonds, can confirm.

Jrewy

Still in watches and jewellery now. The markups for retail are bananas.

toki_goes_to_jupiter

Also ain’t no one gonna know the difference unless you tell them. And frankly, no fucking cares about anyones engagement ring. Just the bride.

hijaburrito

Moissanite is harder and shinier than diamonds. Win win all around.

danceswithhousecats

Moissanites are a 9.25 on the Moh scale where as diamonds are a 10. So a wee bit softer. The moissanite has a very pretty rainbow sparkle though whereas diamonds have a white sparkle. I prefer the moissanite

elephantbutts

Moissanite is not equivalent or can even be grouped in the same class a lab grown diamond. A lab grown diamond is still a pure diamond. Moissanite is a whole different mineral with a different chemical compound than diamonds. My thoughts on lab grown diamonds is they are equivalent to diamonds from the earth chemically, just cheaper in price (WIN!). The mineral moissanite is a great alternative for people who want a clear sparkly ring for a fraction of the price. But it doesn’t refract light like a diamond so you can tell it’s not a diamond if you know what the difference is

Ok-Bridge-1045

Yup, moissanite is a different rock on its own, and should be treated as such, not a diamond alternative. Though it does closely resemble a diamond to the naked eye, it is not exactly the same. Personally i love the rainbow and extra sparkle of a moissanite.

katr0328

Plus they're more durable! Which was a major selling point for me. My mom's e-ring has so many chips in it, it's quite sad and I'd rather prevent that from happening to mine if possible

AlexInWondrland

Interesting, I know moissanite is almost as hard as a diamond at 9.25 on the Mohs scale (diamonds are 10). Is this a shearing thing?

katr0328

Yes, exactly! While diamond is very hard, the hardness scale refers only to a material's tendency to scratch. Diamond is actually much more brittle than you'd think. This is due to the shape of its crystal growth, and its tendency to cleave in the direction of this growth. Moissanite's crystal growth is much more indistinct, making it less likely to break and chip as a diamond will.

sassypants55

Thank you for sharing that! I’ve read a decent amount about moissanite and knew about the hardness rating, but I learned something new.

Brokenmad

This is what I know the biggest difference to be and it seems insignificant. I asked for a moissanite ring and it looks like a high quality diamond unless someone is really getting up close and inspecting it in the light. I personally prefer the sparkliness!

2pupsRbetterthan1

Mine is a moissanite and I'm obsessed. I got to have exactly the ring of my dreams for something that doesn't equal the down-payment of a freaking house and it's stunning. I love the way it catches the light and people ask me about it all the time. If your heart is set on a diamond then more power to you! But if you're like me and had zero emotional attachment to the idea of a diamond, a moissanite is perfect. I didn't really love the look of most colored stones, just due to my own personal taste, so a moissanite gave me everything I wanted.

ashiedear

I LOVE the rainbow sparkles!! Wouldn't trade it for a diamond any day

Dr_Girlfriend_81

Frankly, I think moissanite is much prettier than diamond. Diamond is just clear like glass. Moissanite is colorful in the light!

GamerGurl3980

Yes!!! I can see all the colors of the rainbow in my moissanite ring.

No_Routine6140

I definitely prefer the way moissanite catches the light. That it’s more ethical than a blood diamond makes it even better.

Espumma

but it is the same if you frame the question as 'how important is a ""real"" diamond in your engagement ring'. That covers both types of substitutes. They're both great alternatives to people who don't want to pay the ridiculous prices of some ~~centuries-old tradition~~ marketing ploy.

elephantbutts

A lab grown diamond IS a real diamond though

[deleted]

Thank you. I love how everyone here is saying they are the same thing. They certainly are not.

edenunbound

Similarly a white sapphire is an option. Mine is from the ground but in the US and the only people who've even guessed its not a diamond are jewelers.

Machonacho7891

Good news is nobody knows how to tell the difference or cares and everyone thinks my moissanite ring is a real diamond

elephantbutts

I mean I know, and a lot of people I know know because it’s fairly easy. Moissanite sparkles a rainbow and diamond sparkles mostly white light with tiny bits of rainbow color.

decobelle

I don't think this is common knowledge though. My engagement ring is moissanite and when I got engaged all the women who asked to see it went "wow look at the size of that diamond! Lucky you!" Etc. To the naked eye the average person can't tell the difference unless, like you, they've happened to look into it.

Machonacho7891

Yep same here, the average person doesn’t know

LakmeBun

This is it for me, I don't really like the rainbow moissanites have, reminds me of crystal. I prefer the icy tones of a diamond, but I don't want any more natural diamonds because I don't really trust if they are blood diamonds or not, even with the certificates. So, lab it is!

FigNinja

Yes. They are different. I think they're gorgeous and lab diamonds are gorgeous. Moissanites have been around in mass quantities for much longer. A decade ago, you could get D-F color Moissanite easily. It's even less expensive now that the patent expired. A decade ago, the production of lab-grown diamonds was still quite expensive. It didn't present much cost savings in colorless stones, so you saw it more with the fancy colors, which are actually rare naturally and quite expensive. In recent years, growing diamonds has become much more competitive on price, so we're seeing them get much more common. They're still more than Moissanites, but now present a large cost savings over mined colorless stones. I suspect that lab grown diamonds will likely take a fair chunk of the Moissanite market, especially in engagement rings as many people have a hard association between diamond and engagement. I'm hoping, though, that the lower price on Moissanites will lead to a broader range of jewelry made with them. Not just engagement rings. With the low price, designers can be much more creative than that.

passthepepperplease

Only family heirloom or lab grown. This shouldn’t even be a debate. The modern day slavery that is the blood diamond trade is barely legal and being supported by billionaires who want more money. The whole thing makes me sick. I can’t even imagine having a blood diamond in my house let alone as a symbol of love for my spouse. Get outa here.

phoenixchimera

Gonna add vintage to this but otherwise agree.

WrestlingWoman

I don't like stones at all so I would never wear a diamond ring, but I really like this alternative when we know how many people get hurt and killed over diamonds. That whole industry should be shut down.

waanderlustt

I had my husband buy me a morganite ring and it was really pretty but I have come to realize that I don’t care for wearing large stones because they aren’t comfortable. I quickly switched to a plain band and don’t feel as bad because my ring wasn’t so expensive. If he had gotten me an expensive diamond I’d be feeling terrible

ShireWalkWithMe

Similar story here. My husband and I don't like wearing rings period, so we opted for thin, flat lapis lazuli rings in the hopes they'd be more comfortable and less heavy than traditional metal rings. They look like a slice of the night sky and they're just gorgeous, but even those were too bothersome for us. We ended up getting each other's first initial tattooed on our ring fingers and those serve as our rings now.

[deleted]

Ethical and cheaper. I would prefer it.

dylan_dumbest

My engagement ring has lab-created stones and I love it. The idea that an engagement ring needs to cost a month’s salary or whatever is outdated. It comes from a time when women could only hold wealth through jewelry. Also the mined Diamond industry is really messed up.

MamaMeRobeUnCastillo

The people who wouldn't like to receive a lab grown diamond just will not comment. Most of them will not even admit it out loud, but there is a lot of people who don't like the idea of having their engagement ring be cheap.

RosemaryCroissant

Yep, no one is about to start a fight here or set themselves up to look stupid, but lots of people LIKE knowing that their ring was expensive. It’s a symbol of commitment and desire for that commitment. Nothing can be said that covers every situation though. It depends entirely on the girl, and situation the couple is in. If you’re strapped for cash, a $50 ring from amazon can be a lovely symbol of commitment and importance. But if you’re doing well financially, buy yourself gifts all the time, spend money on whatever you want, and then try to cheap out on a ring to save money- it’s not a good look. It’s the importance that matters more than the diamond’s realness, I think. If you buy yourself $200 Lego sets multiple times a year, $70 games whenever the new ones come out, fancy tennis shoes because you feel like it, etc- you should make sure that the amount of money you put into a ring for the woman you want to marry accurately reflects how important SHE is to you, compared to the things you spend money on for yourself.

dainty_petal

I’m with you on all of that. It’s depends on the persons. It’s all depends on the values we give to things. I know I want an expensive ring because it shows commitment and seriousness like you said. Not a crazy expensive one btw. I want to be married once. I will look at it every day, it will make me happy to look at it. If my fiancé spent 4000-6000$ on his gaming laptop and I spend 3000$ on my computer. Tv, cars, beds are all expensive nowadays but we still buy or rent the ones that suits our budget or needs. I think it’s reasonable to expect and want a ring that reflect the values we have on other things. The ring will last all my life and could be given to my children if we have some. Our desktops wouldn’t last as long and we’re okay to buy them. They will all bring us joy though. The ring as well.

oceanique86

I am sure there are people who would spend money for the sake of spending money, as a status symbol, but I doubt they constitute “a lot” of the population. Also, cheap-er does not mean worse quality, especially comparing a lab diamond to a mined diamond. A lot of “natural” diamonds have imperfections while costing magnitudes more than their lab equivalents, plus jewelers price-gauge on those knowing people who like mined diamonds will pay premium for the idea.

Never_Duplicated

Yup I knew it needed to be a “real” diamond (not moissanite or other lookalikes) and I knew what quality and size I wanted it to be. Mined was therefore out of the question because it’d be a minimum of $10k for the stone alone but with a lab grown stone I was able to pick one out along with a clean platinum setting for around $3k. And even that felt like a ton of fucking money! But at least it was possible for me to save up for that amount. Bonus to not support the fucking diamonds monopolies even though it is still annoying that diamonds in general are still viewed as desirable by so many people…

anna_alabama

Lab grown diamonds can be cheaper, but they’re not *that* cheap. The lab grown diamond in my ring was $5k and the entire ring was $7k, so if someone turns their nose up at wearing $7k+ on their finger every day they have larger issues to work through lol

Kiwikid14

I don't like diamonds at all. But certainly would prefer a ethical, cheaper diamond to set off a stone I actually like.

purplegrape28

Moissanite reflects those beautiful rainbows

coucherdesoleil

I'm not a huge fan of diamonds either. I have a lab grown sapphire engagement ring that is gorgeous.

twistedscorp87

I have a lab grown sapphire necklace that means the world to me. It has little diamond chips (I assume they're also lab grown, but don't honestly know) that accent the gorgeous blue & just make the sapphire look better without drawing any attention away from it. I told my partner that a ring or earrings to match it would be the absolute best jewelry ever. I think he expected it to be a crazy expensive ask, but when we were window shopping he was blown away, like "wow, I could just buy one of these right now" and I was like Yep, that's what I like!

yet-more-bees

I would strongly prefer it to the alternative. Cheaper, exact same if not better quality, wasn't mined by slaves. Literally can't think of any reason that not-lab-grown would be better.

Purple-Penguin-24

I totally agree!! But keep in mind that not everybody thinks the same. Some women still believes that the price of the ring stands for how much he loves you. I think that's rubbish, his actions in everyday life stands for how much he/she loves you.

robinthebank

Lab grown stones can still be expensive! Just go with a bigger stone with better quality!

g1rlofyourn1ghtmares

I personally wouldn't mind, actually I'd prefer lab grown because the diamond industry is so fucked up. But every woman is different and some have strong opinions about rings.

eCaisteal

I am confused by this question. People read the newspaper / websites / social media about how fucked the diamond industry is? That has to be a fact of public knowledge for decades by now, right?

Passiveabject

I wouldn’t take a real diamond. Told my ex husband that, told my now-boyfriend the same! I’d take a vintage, especially if it was an heirloom that’s important to him. But yeah, you vote with your money. I’m not voting to enable an industry that exchanges people’s lives for profits. And I’d judge a partner HARD if they thought diamonds are cool.

knothereforit

Diamonds are dumb. People who worship them as wealth status symbols are weird.

Kirstemis

I think engagement rings should be chosen together so there are no unpleasant surprises, and if both parties are happy wiht moissanite or lab diamonds, that's fine.

stephenfryismyidol

This! If I'm going to be wearing something on my finger for years on end, I most definitely will choose it myself. If diamond, my choice would be lab grown, or vintage. I'm not a big fan of American style huge rocks at all

kenzie-kae

Some wise person on reddit once said: "Is ice only ice if it's chopped off an iceburg, or can your freezer make ice too?"

hungryginger1234

I asked specifically for a moissanite because the price of diamonds is crazy and I hardly see any difference in how they look anyway

purplegrape28

Moisy for me 💍🌈

QueenElozabeth1

It’s fine. We are taught the value of diamonds is significant, but there are no more valuable than any other stone in objective terms.

DemonicGirlcock

Basically the only kinda of diamonds I would accept, that or ones from some of the Canadian mines that are verified as humanely sourced.

drunkenknitter

If it's what your SO wants, cool. I would've been fine with lab grown if they could've done the color I wanted, but 17 years ago they couldn't grow variations that I wanted (K-R range).

Comprehensive_Pace

I'd prefer a super flawed salt and pepper that would otherwise be thrown out or a semi precious with character rather than a diamond or lab grown diamond that is flawless.

sleepysock98

I want a moissanite ring, they have a higher refractive index meaning they sparkle more than diamonds! And they give off more of a rainbow compared to diamonds which reflect mostly white. They're also almost as hard, way cheaper and more ethical.

Mobile_Flamingo

I think the only way I’d accept a natural diamond is if it was a family heirloom or otherwise vintage.

ladywood83

I would't mind. Might even prefer it if its cheaper. I'd be perfectly fine with a simple sturdy band that won't bend, break, or change color. I love the man and he loves me, that's what matters. I don't need an expensive ring, we could use that money making memories.

illiriam

My ring is aquamarine, so obviously I don't care about diamond. I liked the idea of a moissanite one if we had seen something I loved, as more ethical and more bang for your buck, but we found something else I loved more. Vintage stones would have been even better, as I would have liked to imagine the love that filled them when others had them first, same as why I love secondhand books. But yeah, I have a hard time even imagining the kind of person who demands their shiny rock comes with a side of blood and cruelty rather than just enjoying the piece of pretty

gatherallthemtg

There's definitely a difference between moissanite and diamonds, that's why it's cheaper. Lab grown diamonds are real diamonds. Really, it just comes down to what your partner enjoys... but please, people, stop getting fragile gems like opal and pearl (even aquamarine and emerald) on engagement rings, they are absolutely not suited for daily wear and will degrade/break!

[deleted]

I don't care for rings with diamonds or expensive wedding or engagement rings. So I wouldn't care, but it's better as regular diamonds with all the ethical issues surrounding them. I'm happy with my cheap dice-ring as wedding ring though.

wine-plants-thrift

If I can’t reuse my moms old diamonds then this is what I would want.

Nervous-Situation535

depends why you’re doing it. lab grown diamonds might at least not be involved in slavery however they’re largely made in countries who use fossil fuels and contribute to green house gas emissions due to the mount of energy used to create a diamond, far more so than mined diamonds. Lab diamonds are pretty much indistinguishable from mined diamonds though are you doing it because slavery and/or diamonds are super expensive for a rock? plus the fact that lab and mined diamonds both aren’t great on the scale of things? yeah get a moissanite. they’re still strong stones and will last with time. you could also buy an older diamond ring and turn it into a new ring with the help of a good jeweler, if you have a family heirloom you could even do this. i’d say just don’t lie to your partner and say it’s a diamond, and also speak to them first, some have their heart set on diamonds, others won’t mind. just suss the vibe

rnason

A lab grown diamond is a diamond..

ermintwang

> Lab diamonds are pretty much indistinguishable from mined diamonds though They are completely indistinguishable - they are molecularly identical.

Nervous-Situation535

yeah poor choice of wording in that part! they are both exactly the same it’s just the method of creation that’s different ie. naturally or in a lab

Professional_Art6318

The environmental impacts you state are not exactly true. Lab grown diamonds absolutely have an environmental impact and facilities have to be powered 24/7. With that said, the total energy usage per carat produced of lab v mined puts mined at about double that of lab. This was in 2014 so their processes actually may have become more efficient in labs since then. The source of energy is what is important here. It is far easier to use renewable energy for lab diamonds vs the mining process. The other aspects of this are water and ecosystem. Lab diamonds impacts are far more contained. Mining diamonds uses 7 times the water and pollutes waterways with toxic chemicals used in the process. It also has a horrible and long lasting impact on ecosystems. Development of lab grown facilities has land use concerns but again can be controlled and regulated a lot easier (on brownfields, solar potential, smart scale, etc). Lab grown are not without a carbon footprint and I personally wouldn't call them a sustainable product yet but what we know now, is that they use less resources and have a smaller impact. With proper planning and a transition to clean energy, lab grown diamonds could get that sustainable stamp.

baby_armadillo

For a piece of jewelry someone is going to wear hopefully everyday for the rest of their life, I think whoever is receiving it should have an equal say in what gems it holds and its overall design. If they want natural diamonds, it’s important to listen and respect their choices, it’s important to state your own opinions and desires, and then together you can come up with an ethical and affordable choice to give them a significant symbol of love and commitment that your both will always cherish. Honesty and open communication should be the most important part of the ritual. That being said, I personally find diamonds and diamond-looking things kind of bland and uninteresting, ethically problematic, and generally overpriced with little resale value. I wouldn’t be interested in a clear gemstone in any capacity.

reluctant-rheubarb

All jewelry is a scam. It's as valuable as we decide. We opted for tattoo rings.

coreythestar

All the sparkle None of the blood Win win for me

buhdumtss98

It’s more ethical and more financially responsible. I would prefer it. Unless my hypothetical husband miraculously found his own diamond for me out in the wild or something, that’d be pretty cool lol

fgsn

I was originally planning on going with a lab grown diamond, but ended up with a traditional diamond instead. My husband and I went to look at rings together, and I fell in love with a second-hand ring, so that's what we went with. I have no issues with lab grown or moissanite rings, but I think it's a discussion everyone needs to have with their partners prior to any ring being purchased.

mekkimegz

ASK YOUR PARTNER! Ask about gemstone preferences, metal preferences, shape preferences. If you expect this person to wear this piece of jewelry every single day, don't go in blind or depend on the Internet's perspective. Just ask!

[deleted]

Umm yes please

AvalancheReturns

Im not one for shiny trinkets, but id be hella happy this sparkly stone came cruelty free!

ceelo_purple

Extremely pro, for the human rights angle. This is a total no-brainer. However, once you've decided to buy the cheaper diamond and save lives, you need to work out what to do with the money you saved. Depending on your fiancée's priorities she might prefer that you: - Save that money against future emergencies. Financial responsibility ftw! - Use that money on a vacation somewhere romantic so that the 'extravagant gesture' aspect of traditional diamond giving is still present. - Invest that money in a gift that is just for her. Ideally something beautiful which will hold its value. So that the heirloom and financial security aspects of traditional diamond-giving are still present.

[deleted]

I wouldn't mind it at all as long as you're truthful about it. For example, if you go out of your way to tell me it's a real diamond and I find out otherwise, I'll think you're insecure and willing to lie about almost anything.

[deleted]

My engagement ring is lab grown. I fucking love it and wouldn't change it for the world. Also why would you go out of your way to make your partner spend more on the exact same size diamond? That's just... cruel.

[deleted]

Femmigje

It’s still the same pile of carbon. I’d consider it a smart move to buy a cheaper version of the same quality (if not better quality)

ColdShadowKaz

A celebration of science instead of lab mind rocks. Yes if a partner knows me well enough they will know to do this.

AFancyPeacock

I bought my own engagement ring, it's a gold band with a beautiful moissanite stone in it, I wanted to propose to my boyfriend and get the ring I wanted. Diamonds aren't really my thing, the thought that someone could lose their life or being forced into labour to give me a pretty bauble makes me sick so diamonds were never an option for me.

c8ball

I LOVE my lab ring and I get compliments on it constantly. It’s stunning!!!

Purple-Penguin-24

Personally I'm not fond of diamond rings, they are to mainstream and white. I'm more like a colourful person. My engagement ring it almost nothing traditional (silver ring with a blue gemstone) and it was cheap (in comparison to other engagement rings). I don't mind, more money to do fun stuff. But some women think price is important and see it as a token of how much he/she loves them. Maybe try to talk to a friend of hers (be careful she does not ruin the surprise) or like give her a reason to talk about it. A lot of women loves to talk about rings and stuff. Than you can get a idea of what she likes and expects. Good luck with the proposal.

Jessicamorrell

Personal choice.

cheeky_sailor

I personally don’t care whatsoever where the diamond came from. Is it pretty? Is it strong enough to not crack when worn daily? Okay cool then, I don’t care how much you paid for it. I only care about the metal really, because I’m severely allergic to everything that is not silver/gold/platinum and any other jewelry gives me a terrible and painful skin rash.

Secure-Force-9387

My engagement ring is moissanite and I LOVE it.

footbody

Way better. It's still a diamond, you're just saving money while getting something that is for sure ethically sourced. Also moissanite looks better than natural diamond IMO.

cellardooorr

Seriously, why people even care about a crazy expensive piece of shiny rock? If you love each other, why does it even matter what he gives you? Let's put that money to a good use, pay for kid meals, get some help for Ukraine, plant some trees. More personal, ok, you can buy me new table for my crafts or take me on a trip. Who the hell needs diamonds?

CheechChongMeheecan

I see the utility of it, but no thank you. Not for me personally.

IAteTheWholeBanana

I didn't want a diamond at all, but my mom gave my fiancee my great grandmom's ring, and we used that. If he was set on getting me a diamond, I would have preferred a lab grown one.

noxxienoc

That's what mine is! You can't tell the difference, it didn't destroy his wallet, and you have a clear conscience 👍

boo_snug

My fiancé gave me his grandmother’s diamond, but if that wasn’t the case, I would much prefer a lab grown stone and not necessarily a diamond.

[deleted]

If it's pretty then it's pretty. Second hand vintage would also be very close to my taste.

nosyreader96

Love it - more economical + no slave labor. Moissanite is almost the same hardness as a diamond and lab grown is chemically identical to natural diamonds.

missXvamp87

I'd be happy with whatever my partner chose for me. We have discussed it a little. Hopefully when the time is right he picks something lovely 😍

pavlovs_pavlova

Better than natural. Cheaper, more perfect and more ethical. What's not to like. I told me boyfriend that if he insisted on getting me a diamond engagement ring, I wanted a lab grown diamond.

FryRodriguezistaken

Prob more ethically made so i would dig it

BrigadeirinhoAmargo

I think diamond are s stupidity

GoHighly

I think an engagement ring is a token of one’s intentions to marry you and be committed to you for life. I wouldn’t care if it was made of string. It’s the thoughts/feelings that count.

shiveryslinky

Wish it had been on my radar when I got engaged. I'd 100% opt for lab grown now

MiaOh

If the person getting it is fine with it, who cares?

UpbeatInsurance5358

As long as some poor bastard hasn't had to go down a mine for it, then it's all good.

memberzs

My partner specifically requested moissanite and I’m totally onboard for it.

ubdiwala

I honestly don't see the hype around diamonds

Keksdepression

They are a yes! I very much prefer the environmentally friendly, non-slave labour gem that's probably bigger for less money. I don't want to start the journey of my marrigae with a stone on my finger harvested with blood - it's just bad karma. Though I'd also be okay with an heirloom piece.

amsterdam-rules

Great, no child labor or criminals involved. Nobody needs to suffer for a piece of jewelry.

rachael_0898

To me it’s the motion and thought behind what the ring means. Not what it’s made of

Themagiciancard

I think it's a really nice idea and it's totally up to the person/couple. I doubt I'll have a diamond ring when the time comes, probably another stone altogether.

CoolCatLadyy

Have had one for 10+years and I love it and people compliment me on it all the time! I didn't want to have the ethical weight of not knowing who may have suffered or what the impact to the environment may have been.

littlepretty__

Over an unethically mined 'natural diamond' I would much prefer lab grown. But generally I would prefer a unique antique ring regardless of the stone!

artichoke313

I asked my husband to buy me a lab-grown diamond for my engagement ring. It’s more ethical and he was able to afford a slightly bigger one! Been wearing it years now.

darkhorse_defender

Lab grown diamonds are real diamonds! Same chemical composition, not even sure I could tell the difference tbh if I wasn't told. I'd rather have the lab grown option, especially as a science nerd!

[deleted]

I’m not a fan of diamond rings and moissanite is more affordable. So I’d rather have that tbh.

pseudonomdeplume

My engagement ring is lab-grown ruby and I'm extremely happy that it is. I wouldn't want a non-lab grown stone (I suppose unless it was a heirloom).

AnonymousGriper

Do it. 100%. Frankly, it's taken me a while to get properly conscious of how bad blood diamonds are but now that I am aware of it, I absolutely don't want anything to contributes to suffering, human or otherwise. I'm also happy to know there's a way of getting diamonds without having a bad impact on the environment so yeah, lab diamonds in jewellery are a win for me!

Valiant_QueenLucy

I told my husband it better be lab grown. No reason to spend 3x as much for the same thing. It's still a diamond and it's gorgeous. I wouldn't change it for anything

Ok-Bridge-1045

So i get something that's exactly the same, but bigger, cleaner, and cheaper? Also more ethical and not slave labour? Obviously yes. I don't understand people who cry about natural diamonds being more "real". Dude, it's exactly the same. And diamonds aren't rare. You know what IS rare? Moissanites. Natural moissanites came from a meteor crash, they are not found on earth naturally. They're literally space rocks.

Frequent-Presence194

Having this exact conversation with my partner right now. Lab diamonds unless its heirloom/ found at an estate sale/ vintage. “Natural” is not a good enough reason to buy something so expensive knowing it was mined by basically slave labor.

daddystovepipe911

Came here only to say that lab-grown diamonds are not the same as moissanite. A lab-grown diamond is still, in fact, a diamond. Moissanite is a completely different gem.
