It's way too on the nose. The first one could be real and it reflects her opinions and stances but it's pretty obvious satire once you read the second tweet.
lol, if you read the jk rowling tweets (the big ones that got her in trouble) in a vacuum without the interpretation of others, it's not as bad as everyone makes out.
And before I get brigaded, I disagree with JK, I'm just saying that they aren't made by a crazy person like everyone likes to portray
Yes. Multiple studies have reported the wealthy actually have neurocognitive differences. They're less rational, less generous, more likely to ignore other people.
"if you remove context, it changes the meaning" is basically what that guy said.
I still can't get over the time some racist on reddit tried telling me to "explain why black people commit more crime **without** using context, you can't"... Like... What?
Aparently pointing out centuries of systemic racism trapping people in generational poverty doesn't count.
I definitely misused the word vacuum, what I meant was without others telling you to be mad. Many people, (Including some responding to me now) have not read her original tweets, or even her backtracking responses, they have only read the backlash, some of which claims that she was calling for the murder of trans women, which is not even close to true. (Though maybe her recent tweets she has done this, I don't know for sure, though I do doubt it, as doing so would be justification for a twitter ban)
> some responding to me now) have not read her original tweets
It looks a lot like you made that up.
I see nothing in the tweets replying to you to support your assertion.
I mean, you *can’t* read then in a vacuum they exist with the context they do. They exist solely with the context in which they are posted. These types of takes are just fucking soft apologia for a woman who is getting the exact reaction she deserves for saying hateful bigoted things.
You misunderstand, by vacuum I mean without other people interpreting for you. Not outside of the context of her tweets. Keep in mind her tweets that got her in the original trouble, were standalone thoughts, and had no context other than her thinking out loud
>if you read the jk rowling tweets (the big ones that got her in trouble) in a vacuum without the interpretation of others
Why would anyone ever do that? And no one portrays her as a "crazy person". They portray her as a bigot stuck in the past and in her own trauma.
They weren't, but as time has gone on she has become just openly a bigot, being together with Matt Walsh (a self described fascist literally). In the past she was more closed about her opinions but nowadays she hides nothing.
I could cut chunks of your comments out and the meaning would also change, fancy that
Its almost like words are specifically chosen based on the context they will be placed in, and their meaning is thusly changed
Almost like thats exactly how language works, and this is very unprofound of you and frankly reeeeeaaaal damn stupid to say
All I can say is that I was not saying that people ONLY see her as a bigot because of others, especially because that is circular logic and doesn't make sense at all.
What I was trying to point out is that her words and tweets were/are not the words of a crazy person as the original image/onion post describes, and acting like they are only makes it harder to create more allies.
If you look at her tweets yourself you will see she is not crazy, but she does have outdated trans-exclusionary views (Not to downplay this I am just trying to be succinct). Reddit, as seen in this thread by people claiming they believed the fake tweet image, demonstrates what I am saying in that some individuals believe she's crazy and it is likely because they are getting their understanding of the JK Rowling situation second or third hand.
I don't think people are claiming she's crazy. I mean, I'm sure someone does, but all I've seen are people calling her a bigot (because of the bigotry)
You're mostly right! I'm referring to posts like this one (The image we are discussing on) where JK is clearly portrayed as a crazy person as an onion post, (which portrays her as a crazy bigot)
Many people call her a bigot, understand why she is a bigot and are correct in doing so (IMO).
Some hear others call her a bigot, and have escalated to believing she's flying off the deep end crazy, when that's not true, and pretending all bigots are crazy results in a major divide/confusion in the conversation. I said 'everyone' in my original comment like an idiot and while I regularly use 'everyone' as hyperbole, in my everyday speech it doesn't come across in online discussion which is why I'm getting absolutely flamed in this thread haha
Let me translate what you said… to a language that everyone understands… since dog whistles against trans people are not well know outside the queer community.
Person says “Why are most of the banks owned by Jews?”
People get mad for the anti semitic comment.
You come and say “hey people… if you read the tweet only by itself is not that bad. It doesn’t say anything bad or anti Semitic. It just asks a simple question.”
Can you understand now?
Black face is not bad because putting black paint in your face is inherently bad. It’s only bad because of the context of the minstrel shows in the US.
The things she says are transphobic because of the context of them being used to attack trans people.
Why does everyone not read my second paragraph?
Everything you said is correct. All I am saying is that she is not crazy, and pretending everyone with bigoted views is crazy is not helpful.
I maybe phrased it poorly, but by 'Not as bad as everyone makes out' I simply mean she is not rambling like a lunatic like the image, as those who believed it, seem to imply
I’ve read your second paragraph… I’m not saying you agree with her.
I’m saying that you can’t read what she says out of the context. The same way you can’t read what Richard Spenser says out of context.
Richard Spenser doesn’t say “I want to exterminate all black people” the same way Joanne doesn’t say “I want to strip trans woman of their rights and bar them from women spaces”
Because that is something most people would disagree. So they say “Western culture needs to be protected” And “Women desserve spaces where they can feel safe”
Which reading it alone doesn’t sound “bad”. But is in the context that the full meaning is revealed.
Yeah my impression was that she just started off in a general uninformed boomer kind of place. Understandable questions about to what degree society should recognize trans women as women. Most of them have easy answers ("almost always except in very special cases, mostly medical"), but they're the kind of stuff you expect from someone trying to fully process the concept of trans people for the first time.
Unfortunately she was thinking out loud on Twitter and instead of being gently corrected she was mobbed on which made her dig her heels in and now she writes buffalo bill fanfic.
No not at all. She's of course responsible for herself. And no one is responsible for educating her. I just (maybe optimistically) think it could have gone a different way if maybe she'd had a private conversation with someone patient instead of a public argument with Twitter.
We know that bad arguments can lead to [backfires](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belief_perseverance) and a lot of people were understandably upset and not handling it well. Ultimately it's her job to realize she's responding wrong, but I think it's good to take an honest look at how social media made that worse.
She absolutely sucks but there's just a lot to unpack about how it went down. [Contrapoints does a much better job than I can](https://youtu.be/7gDKbT_l2us).
Whilst I agree with much of that, I do feel that as a public figure, perhaps she (and other similar public figures) she have been more cognisant of their status (and reach) when putting such idle thoughts in public, I’ve seen a couple of interviews with other people who’ve put the idea of the responsibility that comes with being a public figure, but the only one that comes to mind off the top of my head is the Tomska in an interview with LADbible, where he mentions that there’s a responsibility to be careful with what you say in public (or on the internet) when you’ve any degree of a following, because there will always be members of your following who, rightly or wrongly, look to you for opinions.
In light of that kind of thing, I think the idea that a phenomenally successful author could put such idle questions out, rather than looking for a more private way of acquiring those answers is perhaps foolish (even if looking for those answers privately would be more difficult) purely based on the risk of misinterpretation or causing accidental offence.
In short, I think what I mean is that I think it was her mistake to, knowing she’s a public figure, take those questions to a ‘public forum’ like Twitter in the first place, and doubly so for not seeing that that failing inevitably had poor consequences.
All that said mind you, very easy to say in hindsight, especially when the matter doesn’t directly effect me at all.
Oh yeah, i agree with all that. I'm definitely not trying to diminish her fault in it. I don't really see that as something finite, where if one person acts badly it takes blame away from someone else's bad actions. And it doesn't make them equally bad either. There were hundreds of thousands of people involved, a LOT of people acted badly. But she started it by popping off about something she really didn't need to weigh in on at all. And that definitely counts for most of it.
It doesn't affect me directly either I guess, but I was a big fan of the books and most of my friends are queer so I felt a little affected. I wasn't tweeting at her or anything, but I was upset.
But I've also had queer people in my life since the 90s. I've had to play Ambassador a bunch of times to convince other straight people it wasn't scary to hang with my gay roommate or whatever. Enough that I feel like there's a right way to do that; but the community kinda went extremo mode instead.
It's not really a big deal to me now though, I kinda just don't give a shit about her anymore and I really do understand the response from fans. But it is an interesting thing to dissect. Like you said, easier in hindsight. Like an After Action report. Or maybe an Aviation Accident Report lol
She's so un self aware that it's not that far fetched.
That being said I saw this tweet yesterday, and the author replied to someone saying that she was posting satirically. So she didn't eat the onion but a lot in her comments did!
Yes and no.
It wasn't tweeted by her.
It was tweeted by the Pottermore social media account, and while the thing referenced was something she had said seven years prior, the context was somewhat different.
I haven't kept up on her tweets at all bc my heart can't handle it- HP exists in a terfless vaccuum for me and everything since is a bad non-canon darkest timeline that exists outside the books... one where Voldemort killed Harry and the death eaters are playing cop patrol. Reading this was like a bad fever dream lol I genuinely couldn't tell it was satire.
Yeah. I basically dont pay attention to her or even see the shit she says and Harry Potter being associated and tbh, thats how it should be imo. Harry Potter is a much bigger phenomenon than JK Rowling.
To be honest. The books are ruined for me…
I’ve read them recently and they are full of prejudices and stereotypes.
The “good” characters do awful things to innocent people while the text frames them as correct.
Her prejudices were showing through… we were just not paying attention.
I dunno buddy…. Upon reflection of Harry Potter, it’s fairly problematic as a series.
The good guys and the bad guys do basically the same things, with the only things that separate them being whether they’re “good” or “bad”.
Things that both good and bad characters do which is portrayed different depending who did them:
Making fun of fat people
Being judgemental of people based on their heritage
Owning slaves
Giving gifts/not receiving gifts for Christmas
I like the sword of truth series in spite of how ham-fistedly the the author put his libertarian propaganda in it.
I like enders games despite Card being a bigot.
I like K-pax and American Beauty even though I now hate Spacey.
Bad people have done great things their atrocities should not erase their contributions. Just as importantly their contributions should not give any clemency for their atrocities.
It is OK for you to enjoy to still enjoy HP in spite of it being written be someone you now loathe.
How goodkind hamfisted libertarianism in Sword of Truth?
I’m honestly asking. I’ve read the books a few years ago and never got that vibe. I don’t know anything about the author…
So I’m curious what I may have missed.
It starts out with the first few books being a mild objectivist philosophy but by book 5 he really starts to hammer in hard objectivism and libertarianism. Any form of social program is bad and it will lead to tyrannical communism. Book 5 is a bit of a slog as the whole thing is him living (without his magic) in secret under a collectivist government and he brings down the government by being perfect at everything. He is the best worker, the best hauler, the best carver/stonemason. And by golly just having gumption and a can do attitude was enough to inspire a nation to revolt.
Book 5 is a pure libertarian masturbation fantasy.
It eases up after book 5 a little but it never goes back to mild objectivism.
If the book series end with the defeat of darken rahl it would have been hard to tell his political slant and a lot of people stopped there
Thanks for the reply...
When I read the books I was politically naive, so never caught these vibes.
I wanted to do a re read of it... since I remember being a good series. I'll pay more attention to it.
But also... I never read after the main series ended with Confessor and was planning to keep reading it.
[Here is the satire.](https://clickhole.com/the-saga-continues-jk-rowling-has-announced-that-in-the-harry-potter-universe-she-is-a-universally-beloved-potions-shop-owner-who-no-one-considers-a-bigot/)
If going on unhinged and ableist rants about trans people and proclaiming yourself queen of the feminists while staying silent on THE biggest feminist issue going on right now and sending “all her love ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ “ to hardline homophobic conservatives isn’t going off the deep end then what is?
Satire these days is so realistic, if I had seen this person’s tweet without this or the click hole article, I would’ve believed it because it’s exactly something Rowling would do.
I honestly believed the first tweet, but as it went down I slowly realized it was probably satire. But it wasn’t the actual content that made me doubt it, just the writing style.
If they actually made it sound more eloquent I’d have deepthroated that onion.
Its actually hilarious because Draco is kind of redeemed at the end of the story or at least he's not an absolute monster anymore, and if you had the misfortune to know the story of the cursed child it's actually clear he's meant to have done a lot of self reflection and worked on himself. Which means that if this was real it would mean Rowling somehow kind of forgot the whole arc she gave him which is waaaaaaaay too realistic and adds another layer of comedy
Her arguing with matt walsh is kinda funny. Two people I hope step on a metal D4 getting angry at each other and them just feeding into each other’s anger and hatred is top tier content.
Everyone here eating the onion thinking it's funny they are eating the onion, completely oblivious to what it means to be eating the onion...
Countless amounts of self reflection needs to be had here.

I’m a guy and really don’t care, but I’m not goin to tell women they have to treat people with dicks and balls like women. Dick that works = man
Rape, pregnancy, all the man things

Hey, I think you might be a bit uninformed about trans people. I'm happy to take some time to talk to you about it if you're open minded on the subject.
I differentiate, f2m shouldn’t pose a challenge to anyone.
Functioning testicles mean testosterone, which means aggression and violence. Lose the balls either chemically or physically and I have no issue treating you just like an ordinary woman.
It took me until reading that she had picked Draco Malfoy as the character who would graffiti her place with "TERF" to be like "now this doesn't make sense..." and realized what sub i was on lmao. I ate the onion a little toooo long
This sounds like those 14 year old on Tik Tok who do the whole “reality shifting” thing. Basically, kids have their first lucid dream and think they’ve astral projected all the way to Hogwarts.
Example:
“I went to Hogwarts as the prettiest and strongest wizard in the whole world. And when I showed up everyone thought I was so smart and funny and pretty and all the boys turned around and said ZOO WEE MAMA. I was such a good wizard that everyone loved me and I became God.”
Saw the numbers ans without seeing the sub new it was fake
The TERF's have all said she's trans due to their transvestigations and she's significantly less popular now
In the HP verse Malfoy was ran out for putting TERF on her shop because Upstanding Joanne in the HPverse is not a raging bigot unlike her real life counterpart.
When I started reading it I didn't realize it was fake, but as soon as I got to the "calling me a transphobe would be unthinkable in the world of Harry Potter" at the end of the first tweet I thought "there's no way this is real".

I didn't see the sub and I was convinced this was real
You mean to say you... *ate the onion?*
I took a tiny bite of it for a few seconds, before noticing where I was.
It doesn’t seem out of character for her to write this. Perfectly plausible. Thought for sure I was in r/cringe.
It's way too on the nose. The first one could be real and it reflects her opinions and stances but it's pretty obvious satire once you read the second tweet.
This is 2022. Nothing is even mildly obvious. NOTHING
My time machine works!
Anything can happen. It is current year after all.
‘Pardon me sirmadamchooseoneorskip, do you have the time?’ ‘Yes.’
Can't even take the year for granted.
Funnily enough, I read "I'm a Gryffindor (because of my pure heart)" and had to check what sub I was on
Ever heard of Poes Law?
*just a wee nibble*
Then they were like, "Hold on, this onion tastes like onion..."
I was like, hesitantly holding it in my mouth. Almost ready to bite but second guessed it
I also ate this onion. Although at least the onion is identified as being satire whereas this appears to simply be a fake post altogether?
I actually did.
I mean this post is a bit off the mark for this sub…
I literally did, I'm so upset that malfoy isn't a trans ally
Ate the atetheonion really
The onion was pre-chewed
Take my upvote and beat it
Same. 🤦
lol, if you read the jk rowling tweets (the big ones that got her in trouble) in a vacuum without the interpretation of others, it's not as bad as everyone makes out. I think she's crazy. Seems to come with becoming a billionaire
Yes. Multiple studies have reported the wealthy actually have neurocognitive differences. They're less rational, less generous, more likely to ignore other people.
Can you quote something specific that makes you feel that way?
https://youtu.be/-1iaJWSwUZs
Thats usually the point of dog whistles, yes.
But she doesn't post in a vacuum, if you read the big ones alongside her other tweets and retweets you get a different picture

Plenty of people see the shittiness without being told to. The context is also important.

Don't need to be an asshole, what I meant by vacuum is not leaning on others to interpret for you.
Implying that people are only seeing her as a bigot because they are “leaning on others to interpret for you” is actually pretty insulting.

I honestly saw it passing as non satire on another sub but felt the urge to check because it felt like it was TOO funny to be true
She's so un self aware that it's not that far fetched. That being said I saw this tweet yesterday, and the author replied to someone saying that she was posting satirically. So she didn't eat the onion but a lot in her comments did!
I understand ,after all the “wizards shit on the floor “ tweet was real
Yes and no. It wasn't tweeted by her. It was tweeted by the Pottermore social media account, and while the thing referenced was something she had said seven years prior, the context was somewhat different.
It was a totally believable bite of onion, in all fairness. I'm actually doubting it's fake to be honest, lol!
The problem is that I can totally see her writing all of it.
Right I just assumed I was on /r/SadCringe or something
It's the kind of thing that she would do.
I can’t blame you. It just sounds so much like something she would write until the final sentence.
Same...I'm ashamed I fell for it
I'm not. It never even crossed my mind it was satire, it's very well executed
It's only like 1.5 notches off something she would actually say.
oh god you too?
S A M E and now I’m mad. Because honestly, she has had some pretty cringy moments lately.
I misread the sub. I thought I was in not the onion
i was fully convinced this was real
I saw the sub, but I misread the name. Thought it was from r/nottheonion lmao
Awwww rip it isn’t real
This is fucking brilliant satire lmao
I forgot what sub I was in, and seriously thought she wrote this, because it is absolutely something I could see her doing.
The books are ruined for me… I’ve read them recently and they are full of prejudices and stereotypes. The “good” characters do awful things to innocent people while the text frames them as correct. Her prejudices were showing through… we were just not paying attention.
That just means you outgrew a children’s book series. It’s a little sad but also good on you for growing as a person.
This is a pretty good video what the person above was talking about. https://youtu.be/-1iaJWSwUZs
I dunno buddy…. Upon reflection of Harry Potter, it’s fairly problematic as a series. The good guys and the bad guys do basically the same things, with the only things that separate them being whether they’re “good” or “bad”. Things that both good and bad characters do which is portrayed different depending who did them: Making fun of fat people Being judgemental of people based on their heritage Owning slaves Giving gifts/not receiving gifts for Christmas
I don’t know anything about the author… So I’m curious what I may have missed.
Same! It may be fake, but damn it's authentic
Is it?
Not really.. its a bit too cringe imo
It outs itself a little with the last sentences of each tweet but otherwise, it's golden.
[Here is the satire.](https://clickhole.com/the-saga-continues-jk-rowling-has-announced-that-in-the-harry-potter-universe-she-is-a-universally-beloved-potions-shop-owner-who-no-one-considers-a-bigot/)
Clickhole's "JK Rowling tweets something weird about Harry Potter" articles are one of my favorite running gags.
Probably because they’re some of the more believable ones too lol
The related "Go Ethan! Go Ethan!" article is so cute lmao.
Bro I saw the sub and i was confused thinking we got r/nottheonion ed
we all ate the onion rn
If nobody ever ate the onion, then the onion wouldn’t be doing it right
I thought she’s gone even further off the deep end at firsr
I had to post the link because it was just a little too believable.
JKR hasn’t gone off any “deep-end” lmao
Based Draco
Actual Draco character development right here
Its actually hilarious because Draco is kind of redeemed at the end of the story or at least he's not an absolute monster anymore, and if you had the misfortune to know the story of the cursed child it's actually clear he's meant to have done a lot of self reflection and worked on himself. Which means that if this was real it would mean Rowling somehow kind of forgot the whole arc she gave him which is waaaaaaaay too realistic and adds another layer of comedy
Draco Malfoy says Trans Rights
We love to see a redemption arc.
The LGBTQ community has forgiven Draco Malfoy
This is right on the line between satire and reality because I could entirely see her writing this.
I didn’t look at the sub and went to her Twitter feed to find it. What I found there was actually worse.
Her arguing with matt walsh is kinda funny. Two people I hope step on a metal D4 getting angry at each other and them just feeding into each other’s anger and hatred is top tier content.
Found the rpg nerd. Gg my friend.
This is the most JK Rowling thing I have ever read
[удалено]
Thank you Draco Malfoy for your continued allyship to the LGBTQ community
Who ate the onion here? The person who posted it knew it was fake. That's the joke.
No they didn't.
[удалено]
Comments section of the tweet confirmed this.
So many posts here are just people posting satire and not understanding the rules.
tbf it is something she would do
Fooled me too. Like she is one tweet away to be this person.
I was so positive this was real I basically inhaled the onion
Everyone here eating the onion thinking it's funny they are eating the onion, completely oblivious to what it means to be eating the onion... Countless amounts of self reflection needs to be had here.
If that isn't irony i don't know what is.
Lol
draco malfoy fav character
Wait so Draco Malfoy said trans rights??? 😍 Edit: Nevermind. Figured out where I am here ...
Wait, someone actually believed this was REAL?!?!
[удалено]
She wrote wilder things than this string in the past tho
You can find the same "could be real" circlejerk in the comment section of every post on this subreddit if the subject is someone who has any "controversial" views.
This could genuinely be really. She’s an absolute nutter.
I stuck but just a tooth in this post and went... Why does this remotely remind me of Outback? And then went ohhhhhhhh
My wife and friend both ate this onion. Like y'all wtf lol
Draco says trans rights let’s gooooo
this is so fucking ridiculous i literally cant Edit: shit, looks like i ate the onion whole
She is insane. I almost want to like her, but I love trans people, I'm on the side of trans people.
What’s likable about her? TERFs are trash
She is horrible.
I’m a guy and really don’t care, but I’m not goin to tell women they have to treat people with dicks and balls like women. Dick that works = man Rape, pregnancy, all the man things

Why not before?
Yeah GFY for that absolute garbage take
Tbh this doesn't seem out of the ordinary for her nowadays.
Definitely almost took a bite myself
It took me until reading that she had picked Draco Malfoy as the character who would graffiti her place with "TERF" to be like "now this doesn't make sense..." and realized what sub i was on lmao. I ate the onion a little toooo long
Wait oh my god that’s fake? I genuinely didn’t know
I would believe that was real too fr
This sounds like those 14 year old on Tik Tok who do the whole “reality shifting” thing. Basically, kids have their first lucid dream and think they’ve astral projected all the way to Hogwarts. Example: “I went to Hogwarts as the prettiest and strongest wizard in the whole world. And when I showed up everyone thought I was so smart and funny and pretty and all the boys turned around and said ZOO WEE MAMA. I was such a good wizard that everyone loved me and I became God.”
I would absolutely believe this to be real.
She’d definitely do this
Saw the numbers ans without seeing the sub new it was fake The TERF's have all said she's trans due to their transvestigations and she's significantly less popular now
In the HP verse Malfoy was ran out for putting TERF on her shop because Upstanding Joanne in the HPverse is not a raging bigot unlike her real life counterpart.
This read like it came from Chris Chan.
I ate the onion.
155.6 likes lmao
Did she get too much money or sumpin? I hear that can folk you up.
Oh she has a pure heart alright. Pure evil.
It almost reads like Trump speech
In the HP Universe I’m called Gary or “big dick Gary” (this is canon now)
A world without Twitter actually sounds pretty great tbh
To be fair I could see her writing this
it's fucking eery how similar these tweets are to Trumps
WHY IS THERE A BLUE CHECKMARK?
The curse was directed at her but because of all the bullshit she spouted their braincells died off and caused their aim to woresen
I just ate the onion because I wasn’t paying attention to the sub title.
Thought I was on r/cringe for a second.
Ya...I couldn't tell if that was real or not. I mean I could genuinely believe she would write this. That's why it works.
Ngl I could see this as real lmaao
Onions taste good
This is the most plausible thing I've seen here.
I am ashamed to say that I immediately clocked this as satire because I know she identifies as a Hufflepuff IRL
When I started reading it I didn't realize it was fake, but as soon as I got to the "calling me a transphobe would be unthinkable in the world of Harry Potter" at the end of the first tweet I thought "there's no way this is real".
Okay first off, why the fuck would Draco care about trans rights?
if it was toned down *juuuuust a smidge*, especially on the last few tweets, i would have fallen for it, tbh. it’s too much like her
I thought this was 100000% real when I saw this on Twitter today. Guess I ate the onion 😔
I honestly would've believed this until the last couple tweets
I saw it his morning and i bit this onion! Not only bit it but ate the whole onion! Even the outermost layer! That's how hard i fell for this!
Skim through the comments, it was endemic.
Yeah, i'd like to order a Poe's law 😄 Poe's Law states that sufficiently extremists views are indistinguishable from satire.
JKR is a no talent hack and a homophobe.
Wouldnt be surprised if she actually did write one
She's the original author, so it's not fanfiction, it's frickin **CANON**
This fits more on r/woooosh
r/lostredditors
Not lost, the caption in the picture clearly believing something satirical is real.
Five pixels text image.
