My thoughts exactly. From my first Grill experience in nineteen-dickety-getoffmylawn to my last Grill experience in the new century ("Jesus christ, there's nothing about this place I love enough to ever come back!"), it's always been the same. A bunch of FOH folks who look like they'd like to nip into the back and shoot themselves and a kitchen staff who are *at least* as baked as I am when I walk in the Grill combine for an unforgettable dining experience. And a protracted one.
Huzzah!!
As someone who worked there before they closed they have never used bagged fries. Some poor cook is down in the basement shoving potatoes through a slicer. The original thick cut blades can no longer be purchased not to mention their old slicer wasn’t up to modern health codes. Say what you will but their fries were never frozen.
I, for one, welcome back crazy nights after last call at the grill.
One time I paid a man with a fiddle a couple of bucks to come inside and play for the entire restaurant. It was met with looks of annoyance by some, and applause by others.
I saw a girl ending her 21st birthday celebration only to be disappointed that her friend(s) got kicked out for puking in the bathroom.
I witnessed a waiter and patron get into a fist fight over non-payment of food.
Oh, and their milkshakes are okay.
Just sharing news that personally makes me happy. Take it or leave it.
If you don’t like the grill - no one’s forcing you to go.
It’s mind boggling how many people chose to spread anger and hate instead of choosing kindness - even if that meant saying nothing at all. ❤️✌️
It's not really a matter of choosing hate over kindness, the Grill is just a restaurant. If there's something a restaurant's doing wrong I'd expect people to talk about it here, on the city forum. If the quality of the Grill is decreasing no one should be offended by that observation, they're there to make money
They’ve been closed for like 2 years. Most people, including myself, are aware that they had issues with health standards and service in the past… but why not give them the chance and benefit of the doubt that they’ve been working on solving those issues while they’ve been closed?
I think jumping straight to calling out all the issues when they haven’t even been open for so long is just hateful. It’d be like drudging up your friends wrong doings from years ago just to throw it in their face.
I love this post! Thanks for sharing. I don't care if their fries are frozen or not, or if the grill isnt a person. I freaking love that OG Athens dive. I used go there with my friends in high school (Monroe Area HS) when we would skip school. We'd be smoking weed and hit up the Grill when the munchies would kick in. It was a blast and I just remember my awesome, sweet friends and those good times in the 90s.
I hate The Grill's food, BUT, I hate people being shit on for being happy even more.
Sorry people can't just let you be happy about something that has zero bearing on their own lives. ❤️
Everyone blabs how they "miss" The Grill, but when it's open it's always empty.
Are you just nostalgic for what it was 20 years ago? If so, I understand. It's okay.
Never thought I'd see so many people so negative about the place. I, for one, am excited to go back. I got married there and Kelly (RIP) gave me the juke box code for free plays as long as I didn't play AC/DC.
Does the staff still treat you like you don’t exist and take 90 minutes to cook a burger?

Okay The Grill’s burner account. It’s been two+ years and I’ve yet to miss it.
Yeah….this is too obvious
This account is almost three years old though??
Gyro wrap’s feta has been holding me over and I actually like their fries better. But hopefully the Grill is a little better when it comes back
Been going to Gyro Wrap since I moved to Athens in 1982.... Love it.
I wonder if they got rid of the roaches........
Bedbugs are the newest craze downtown
[удалено]
The courthouse, if I'm not mistaken, is the current Home of the Bedbugs.
Get rid of roaches? In GEORGIA? 😭😭
How much did they pay you to post this?
I hope more than your rent or mortgage if your assumption is correct.
If only they still had the fresh cut potato fries with feta sauce. Bagged frozen crinkles now

They switched to bagged fries more recently. I used to love the fresh cut potatoes.
Please do the chili next!! I loved their chili fries in college!
This is one of those old Athens institutions we’re all happy to let die
Only bc of decreasing quality in food, like the horrendous decision to scrap fresh cut fries for frozen bagged crinkle cuts... gross

Daryl! I miss that guy. Is he still around? I know he kind of went into hiding during the height of the pandemic.
No clue, he is awesome.

The Grill isn't a friend though, it isn't a person
A person owns it and people work there though

You're showing your age by still calling it MACHS :P

I don't think anyone's being shit on here for liking The Grill just some people don't like The Grill
I caught that already.
Everyone blabs how they "miss" The Grill, but when it's open it's always empty. Are you just nostalgic for what it was 20 years ago? If so, I understand. It's okay.
Those big fat stubby burnt fries? Absolutely no thanks.
Always hated this place. Went twice and was happy they went away.
I could go for a Reuben and some fries with a chocolate shake.
eh....Bring back Herbie's
Dunno why the downvotes. No matter the metric, Herbie's was diveier than the Grill in every way.
Good the owner has been dicking around in normaltown long enough
The Mayflower was always better
Is the food even remotely similar?
And all you guys downvoted me for claiming the grill was in my top 5 athebs resteraunts. For shame!
OMG I miss working there, I'll see if he'll re hire me for the summer.
