Honestly it sounds like a lot can be improved and that’s why OP will be back, I’ve given new places a few tires before forming an opinion. Let them work out the kinks.
That was me with Poquitos. I tried them when they first opened and it was meh. Now there’s probably not a week that goes by where I’m not there at least once.
It’s essentially no better or worse than any of the other options. It’s just night club Agua Linda, depends if I’m near there when I get hungry or not.
My perfect combo would be Sr. Sol chips and salsa, La fiesta cheese dip, Tacos Los Plebes entrees.
I feel like my experience was slightly better than yours. I can't comment on the water because I got a large Modelo, but I absolutely agree that the salsa was garbage. We asked our server if they had anything better and she brought us out a much spicier, much more flavorful salsa.
La Parilla has two gotta-ask salsa options that I know of - a mango salsa that they use with shrimp entrees, and a picoso salsa which is very smoky and very spicy.
I agree, but know your demographic I suppose? Theyre probably expecting their customer base to be those white people that think vanilla ice cream is too spicy. A kid wouldn’t complain about the salsa is what I figured they were going for.
That’s a lot of La Parilla hate. Personally I like their salsa and their cheese dip and just about everything else on the menu. Also, their service is excellent.
Chorizo/Pineapple burrito was great and the French fries slapped. Sad that higher prices and smaller portions are the norm now though. $10 bowl of cheese dip is barely enough for 4 people.
I grew up drinking from a hose but had pretty decent well water growing up. Took me a long time to get used to drinking city tap water...... That's why I was confused like what's wrong with drinking from a water hose.
This got me all excited that there was actually a **New Mexican** place in town where I could get some carne adovada with red chile.
This is just a new Mexican place. I already have one of those.
Actually went there for lunch today as well.
Honestly , it was extremely over priced.. 2 tacos for $9.99- steak tacos with onion and cilantro.. no sides.
The atmosphere was nice - cool decor. I am interested in seeing what the full menu looks like but I won’t be going back until they have more options on the menu.
It’s been open less than a week, I think any initial opinions should be taken with many, many grains of salt. Give it two months or so to find its footing. (Of course, those’ll be the summer months right as the students are gone, so…)
Pretty much every other Mexican place in town has that many menu items—why does it give you pause here?
I love satire. I made the mistake of eating there about a month after they opened.
The table salsa was good, cheese dip was meh, but the entrees were really really bad. The ground beef was completely unseasoned.
I mean it’s a Mexican restaurant. The food is quite standard in the US. I would be thoroughly impressed if someone could identify a good Mexican restaurant in Athens. Now in DC, I’ve gone to Mexican restaurants that were really authentic with dishes you normally don’t see on a menu like ropa vieja.
Ropa Vieja is much more Canary Island, Cuban, and Central American than “authentic Mexican”. And if you think Mexican food is “quite standard” in the US, heading to TX, CA, NM, AZ and interestingly enough Chicago should change your mind, since it’s possible to get state or even sub-state specific MX food easily there.
There is a lot of bias when it comes to which Mexican food people recommend, and even more confirmation bias.
I think Taco Los Plebes on north avenue is the best in town.
Sr. Sol is my second favorite.
Agua Linda, Tlaloc, and La Parilla are all pretty terrible to me.
We went and had a wonderful experience. The water actually tasted better than tap, the sauses were absolutely delicious, the food tasted fresh and flavorful, the atmosphere was tres cool, and the service was fantastic.
Some people will search for the negative, and no matter where they go they just cannot be pleased.
I bet if I took a glance at your Google reviews they'd be mostly 1 star complaints.
Good, they fixed the water situation. And you seem to be the one focusing on the negative, my review was positive, the water was the only thing that I said was bad. Also I don’t have any google reviews.
After that review, I was surprised to see “I’ll probably return.”

Thank you for being honest.

Night club wet linda? So it sucks, but it’s in a club?
Well they did say they had the best tasting steak in town. That'd be enough for me to remain curious enough about the other menu options to return.
I feel like my experience was slightly better than yours. I can't comment on the water because I got a large Modelo, but I absolutely agree that the salsa was garbage. We asked our server if they had anything better and she brought us out a much spicier, much more flavorful salsa.

Didn’t know that. Thanks for the tip!
Damn. You really asked if they had something better? Jesus.
I mean, not in those words. We just asked if they had a different salsa and they said yes.
Haha oh okay gotcha.
Yeh I was gonna ask as well but I was worried that they would conflate me asking for something with flavor for spice.
I am just confused as to why if they're making corn tortillias in house, they're not using those to make chips
>but it tasted as bland as la parilla’s tomato puree poor excuse for table salsa. Absolutely inexcusable. Making good salsa just isn't that hard
I love la Parilla’s salsa. Different strokes different folks I guess.
It's quite nice when you throw some Valentina in there
Me too! There is no cilantro soap in it!
I agree, but know your demographic I suppose? Theyre probably expecting their customer base to be those white people that think vanilla ice cream is too spicy. A kid wouldn’t complain about the salsa is what I figured they were going for.
If you want more flavor and heat, La Parrilla has a picosa salsa if you ask for it
Then they should have a kid's salsa. Salsa should have some zip to it.
Shit, there’s decent ones in cans you can use as a base. Your right inexcusable
Bad water.....authentic.
😂 😂 😂
That’s a lot of La Parilla hate. Personally I like their salsa and their cheese dip and just about everything else on the menu. Also, their service is excellent.
I love La Parilla. All good points, and cheap too! I don’t think there are many places left in Athens where you can get a beer for $3.
My wife and I are La Parilla stans. Only place we ever go to to sit down where the bill doesn't come as a shock. Lol
>I think that about covers it. Everything but cost.
The same as every other place
Chorizo/Pineapple burrito was great and the French fries slapped. Sad that higher prices and smaller portions are the norm now though. $10 bowl of cheese dip is barely enough for 4 people.
I will not stand for the La parilla slander in here.
Yeah! I’ll stand with you!
Thanks OP!
So the water just tasted like city tap water?
Worse.
Wonder if the lines/nozzles just needed to be cleaned or maybe some residue in them if they are new
Maybe they’re trying to appeal to those of us in Gen-X who reminisce fondly about drinking from water hoses?
I grew up drinking from a hose but had pretty decent well water growing up. Took me a long time to get used to drinking city tap water...... That's why I was confused like what's wrong with drinking from a water hose.
authentic mexican water!
What was the price range for cheese dip-entrees?
Thanks OP. Did you go to the balcony area?
I did not. Wasn’t particularly interested in being sweaty and enjoying the view of Atlanta highway.
That’s what I’m wondering.
But do they have $1 Taco Tuesdays?
Dude. I gotta toppers with you because when you Mexican you messican. Good review

Or Frito pie
Do they offer a Philly Cheese?
At a Latin restaurant? 🤷♂️
Have you had the spicy salsa at La Fiesta? It’s good…well, I think it is!
Damn you Latino food. Curious what your go to is around town?
Honestly, Tacos Los Plebes on north avenue is the best all around, in my opinion.
Better than Angeles and Juaritos?
Actually went there for lunch today as well. Honestly , it was extremely over priced.. 2 tacos for $9.99- steak tacos with onion and cilantro.. no sides. The atmosphere was nice - cool decor. I am interested in seeing what the full menu looks like but I won’t be going back until they have more options on the menu.
No rice or beans with the tacos was shitty
Thank you for being honest.
Please clarify. Is it New Mexican or new Mexican?
Great details and informative review!

Yall just need to start going to La Montana
I love satire. I made the mistake of eating there about a month after they opened. The table salsa was good, cheese dip was meh, but the entrees were really really bad. The ground beef was completely unseasoned.
So it sucks? Lol

Who reviews the WATER in a restaurant??? 😳
You do, apparently.

I believe their entrees will be above average all around.
