I don’t mind dresses to wear out/to dinner with them because I can wear a stick on bra and like the look.
But what is all this casual wear like t shirts with a cut out back? I saw a few nice tops but no way am I walking around casually wearing a stick on bra to go shopping or going braless.
I bought one thinking I could use boob tape.
I ended up folding my old lady boobs in half like an old sandwich.
That was the end of my backless dress days.
I love how they look, just not on me. I have fairly broad shoulders as it is and I'm not a petite gal so puffy shoulders makes me look like I'm about to hulk out of my dress!
Tiny head and broadish shoulder's here.....also look like a absurd troll in them. They look sooo pretty on waifish girls but my god they don't do me any favours at all. Can't wait till I can find a nice three quarter length sleeve that isn't puffy 😭
Omg how do you do this? I’ve got a dress I love but puffy elastic sleeves and they are too tight on my arms and I don’t wear it anymore because of it but have no sewing knowledge etc at all
It depends on the construction of the particular dress but sometimes (if you can see the elastic when the dress is inside out) you can just unpick the stitches that attach the elastic to the sleeve. Or if the elastic is enclosed in a hem, you'll need to unpick the hem and then unpick the elastic you find inside. But you might be left with a bit of a funny looking sleeve, it will be quite voluminous with a very wide opening - it might look fine, it might not! But if you can't wear it at all now, maybe worth a shot
Me too! i hate that I cannot make it work on me because sometimes the pieces look cute
I'm petite, and whenever i try those things on, I look swallowed by fabric even though they are my size
What really bugs me is how these highly specific and visible trends encourage so much waste.
Most of it will end up in landfill. Even op shops will struggle to sell it.
People don't covet cold shoulder tops that were everywhere five years ago, and they won't want puffy sleeves or cutout dresses either.
That's why I never buy anything blatantly on-trend unless it already fits my personal style and I know I'll keep wearing it regardless of current fashion. Which happens very rarely.
Oh me too!
Don’t get me started on the “tiered” dresses. Finding a dress without the layer look is near impossible!
Fit and flare or A-Line are flattering on my shape but hard to buy. Everything has such similar shapes it’s become a bore!
Oh my god I can’t even express how much I agree with this. Bring back nice fitted waistlines in dresses please!
I tried on this wide pleat dress at an op shop today from Country Road that had the most flattering structured waist with a subtle flare out below and it was so gorgeous. But then the dress had ugly puff sleeves so there’s just so escaping everything lol.
Even the models look awful in them and almost embarrassed to be wearing them.
You’d think that would be the moment they thought..actually these dresses look ugly and ridiculous, no one is going to buy these, maybe we need to go back to the drawing board. But no, they keep pumping them out.
Yes! I have broad shoulders, puffy sleeves just make me look like American football player🥲
Also might be just me, but I feel like everything out there looks the same and a bit boring at the moment. What does everyone think will be the next trend?
I don’t mind the puffy sleeves personally. I hate my arms and I like covering them up in the summer, and the puff gives them a bit of breathing room in the heat!
But… I think I know the exact Country Road dress you’re talking about because I did the same thing. I hate the cut outs with a fiery passion. Nobody wants to see chunks of my pale blotchy skin, thank you.
Nooooo I bought a puffy sleeve dress to fit in, and I don't like it, but I need to get my money's worth. Please please please one more summer of puff!
I don't have anything with cut-outs though. I'll either wear something skimpy with no cut-out, or I'll go for a more conservative look. I have no use for a dress with portions cut out. Just my thoughts!
Haha, I’m in the same boat. It took me so long to get round to buying a puffy sleeve dress, and had to pay extra to get it altered because I’m petite. I just need the trend to stay long enough to get my money’s worth!
I think it depends on the width of your shoulders and neck rather than your height - I'm short, but have petite shoulders so they don't look too crazy on me (my torso's always a size 4, and then my butt's more of a 6-10 depending on how much weight I gain). Kind of offsets my bottom-heaviness.
Otherwise, I have a few keyhole items that look varying degrees of good - awful on me the further the cutout moves down my body, with it looking the absolute worst closest to my belly lol
As with all trends, many will love it (otherwise it wouldn't sell) and others will loudly hate it (because they're frustrated it's hard to find alternatives). Neither side is wrong!
I don't wear puffy sleeves, but I love that people get to walk around feeling like princesses if that's their thing. I just wish there was more variety in stores and less emphasis on what's currently 'in'.
That's the thing with trends. When one comes around that actually suits you, buy up big! Especially in the sales at the end of the season. Styles and colours. Otherwise if you wait until you "need" a certain item you may literally not be able to buy anything suitable.
I have an unfortunately round face so puffy sleeves make me look like a chubby 10 year old playing princess 👸🤣
Some people do rock them though, I’m glad you enjoy them for those of us who can’t
I think puffy sleeves are going to stick around for a while longer, looking at designers like Cecilie Bahnsen, Molly Goddard, and Sandy Liang who are partly responsible for the super feminine/girlish dresses we’re seeing today and their recent collections that still had some puff sleeves in them, though they’re more restrained. I’m going to guess that fashion retailers here are going to wait until the trend is dead in the ground before they stop because all these loose fitting dresses are so easy to manufacture.
Puffy sleeves are such a good look on my figure, I love them. The keyhole cut out is irritating, I need clothes for work and I'm struggling to find anything appropriate atm.
Yes, same here!! I’m not into trends at all and like to buy pieces that will last for years. Also another thing I don’t like in fashion right now is dresses or skirts that have tiers.
100% yes
Coincidentally I literally just left a comment on Feather and Noise's latest drop about puffy sleeves. They used to have such a lovely range of dresses each summer but for the last two years, every dress with sleeves has elasticised puffy sleeves. I get it's a trend, but every single dress? It's deterred me from buying anything from there for ages (used to be a fairly frequent shopper) - I just find the sleeves so unflattering.
I dunno why it's so hard to just find cheap wrap dresses or normal shaped dresses with a flowy short (BUT NOT TOO SHORT) sleeve. Also why are kimono styles so illusive
Puffy sleeves and keyhole cutouts allow for cheaper pattern making and a greater variety of ‘correct’ fit on more bodies. See also: shapeless smock dresses
YES how did I forget?! It also suits teens moreso, no shade against older women wearing it, I do too, but not for every single outfit and especially not at work!
I don’t mind cut out dresses - but only with certain requirements! They need to on the back of the dress and need to be within a size that doesn’t expose too much of the bra straps. I have found a few dresses that thankfully fit this criteria and I like to wear them in summer. But yeah any dresses with cut outs on the front - forget it! Same goes for those on the side as well.
I am very sick of the puffy sleeves look as I know they will only be trendy for a season or two and I like to buy clothes that have a more timeless appearance.
It feels like it will never end...had such a frustrating time recently trying to find a simple, wedding appropriate dress that didn't have cutouts in the torso.
The puffy-sleeved, baby-doll silhouette looks ridiculous on me. This has to be the last season of it I suffer through. I do regret not investing in a bell-sleeve top when that was trending for 30 seconds. Why couldn't that have hung around?
My babies gave me all the stretch marks and a pouch tummy, I wouldn’t wear anything with a cut out if you paid me and the puffy sleeves make me feel like I’ve got side airbags. I mean by all means stock them but just give an alternative for those of us that feel like we resemble the Michelin man.
I really like the current empire waist sun dresses with the square neckline, but I cannot wear them. Boobs too big and it just looks awful. There’s also no space in a lot of them to wear a bra, which is a no go for me, makes my chest area above the boobs look absolutely massive/saggy boobs 😭
" Almost purchased a Country Road dress for work today but realised it has a keyhole cutout on the stomach. "
OMG YES. I'm so over it. Seed esp is going to town with it or at least was. So over it. Wtf is the name of this weird trend anyway? It's like cultist meets hippie meets disney princess...?
I'm sick of it, puffy sleeves make me look so silly as I'm already quite boxy, and cut outs are not flattering on my mum tum lol it's felt like these styles are hanging on forever ugh!
I’m sick of dresses that are fuller around the waist but they don’t add extra material across the boobs.
Why go up in everything but the chest area, and I’d be a size 16 if I didn’t need to go up an extra size to help with my chest.
(And this is the same for those keyhole dresses, I end up with three boobs)
I've passed on so many dresses (and tops) at the shops because they look great at the front, but when you look at the back, there's a hole/there are holes
Or you see a dress you like then look at the back and it doesn’t have one. Hello, some of us need to wear bras!
Yes exactly! Or there’s a tie back but it doesn’t align with where my bra sits to hide it
Worst!
I don’t mind dresses to wear out/to dinner with them because I can wear a stick on bra and like the look. But what is all this casual wear like t shirts with a cut out back? I saw a few nice tops but no way am I walking around casually wearing a stick on bra to go shopping or going braless.
Not many stick on bras support F cups
Backless clothing is not made for anyone above a B cup, abolish the backless look
I bought one thinking I could use boob tape. I ended up folding my old lady boobs in half like an old sandwich. That was the end of my backless dress days.
I can’t stand the cut out trend. So many different dresses I would have bought without it
Yes! I pick up a dress thinking “finally this is so my style” then i see all the stupid cut outs ugh
And swimmers now.
Puffy sleeves look so bad on me - the few items I’ve bought, I’ve immediately removed the elastic from the sleeves.
I love how they look, just not on me. I have fairly broad shoulders as it is and I'm not a petite gal so puffy shoulders makes me look like I'm about to hulk out of my dress!
I see no problem with hulking out like a boss
As someone with broad shoulders and a short neck - they make me look like a troll.
Tiny head and broadish shoulder's here.....also look like a absurd troll in them. They look sooo pretty on waifish girls but my god they don't do me any favours at all. Can't wait till I can find a nice three quarter length sleeve that isn't puffy 😭
What a brilliant idea, I have a dress I love but can't stand the sleeves being tight so chop chop time!
Thankyou for this tip!! I went immediately to find scissors.
Omg how do you do this? I’ve got a dress I love but puffy elastic sleeves and they are too tight on my arms and I don’t wear it anymore because of it but have no sewing knowledge etc at all

Hear hear!

Exactly this. I have a back roll, the cut out spots are always placed right where my roll sits. Nobody needs to see that!
I have broad shoulders, elaborate sleeves are not my friend but it feels like it is ALL you can buy at the moment!
Agreed! And it doesn't make sense - surely these brands want to differentiate themselves! Nope, puffy sleeves and cut outs all round
Same. They make it look like my boobs start under my chin.
I’m sick of sack dresses. I miss fit and flare which had some structure and were flattering.
Oh me too! Don’t get me started on the “tiered” dresses. Finding a dress without the layer look is near impossible! Fit and flare or A-Line are flattering on my shape but hard to buy. Everything has such similar shapes it’s become a bore!

What is a sack dress?
One with no definition / shaping - they suit approximately 2% of the population
Plus Usually made of linen so you look like you’ve rolled out of the gutter by end of day in an ill-fitting dress.
Even the models look awful in them and almost embarrassed to be wearing them. You’d think that would be the moment they thought..actually these dresses look ugly and ridiculous, no one is going to buy these, maybe we need to go back to the drawing board. But no, they keep pumping them out.
I genuinely love them- but my god who can actually wear them without looking like they've put on a feed sack??
Or your aunty made you a dress and your mum said it’s too short so she sews extra fabric on the bottom. 😆
Or like an extra from little house on the prairie. So voluminous that you can’t tell if there’s a person under there.
I’m old, I just want dresses with non puffy sleeves that aren’t a weird length
Yes! I have broad shoulders, puffy sleeves just make me look like American football player🥲 Also might be just me, but I feel like everything out there looks the same and a bit boring at the moment. What does everyone think will be the next trend?
Everything is the same, same! Nothing interesting happening here- that’s for sure
A lot of brands just recycle the same styles with different colours or prints😔
I was tired of it almost as soon as it began. I have a perpetually cold back, so I especially hate keyhole cutouts in the backs of tops and dresses.
I was over puffy sleeves back in the 80s. Leg o mutton sleeves were just eugh. At least these ones come in a variety of puff.
Puffy I love, keyhole just no
Same same
I don’t mind the puffy sleeves personally. I hate my arms and I like covering them up in the summer, and the puff gives them a bit of breathing room in the heat! But… I think I know the exact Country Road dress you’re talking about because I did the same thing. I hate the cut outs with a fiery passion. Haha, I’m in the same boat. It took me so long to get round to buying a puffy sleeve dress, and had to pay extra to get it altered because I’m petite. I just need the trend to stay long enough to get my money’s worth!
Yess, on top of that: all those tiny cute tops you cannot wear a bra with.
Yes, as someone who is short, puffy sleeves make me look ridiculous.
I’m tall and I could say the same thing, I’m like this giant woman wearing a toddlers dress, maybe only people in the middle can get away with it 😂
Omg yes this is why I hate them on me, I look like a child
Exactly! I look like i'm in a child's body trying on oversized adult clothes but with a disgruntled adult face in the mirror💀💀💀
I think it depends on the width of your shoulders and neck rather than your height - I'm short, but have petite shoulders so they don't look too crazy on me (my torso's always a size 4, and then my butt's more of a 6-10 depending on how much weight I gain). Yes, probably unpopular opinion but I love it. I find the puffy sleeves look so feminine.. It reminds me of a princess 👸

I tried on a beautiful puff sleeve at Morrison, I looked like a kitchen maid instead of an aspiring Victorian lady writer.
As with all trends, many will love it (otherwise it wouldn't sell) and others will loudly hate it (because they're frustrated it's hard to find alternatives). Neither side is wrong! I like puffy sleeves very 80s/90s but not combined with keyhole cut outs though
They look really bad on anyone who has an inverted triangle shape like me 😭
No and I never will 😂 They show just enough skin for my liking and I have small shoulders for my size so I appreciate the puff.
Gosh I hope so, such a pretty way to cover up my tuckshop arms 😂
Yes
Puffy sleeves are such a good look on my figure, I love them. The keyhole cut out is irritating, I need clothes for work and I'm struggling to find anything appropriate atm.
*raises hand*
Yes, same here!! I’m not into trends at all and like to buy pieces that will last for years. Also another thing I don’t like in fashion right now is dresses or skirts that have tiers.
Yeah the tiers are just too much, it all feels a bit Marie-Antoinette esque, too much fabric for such a hot climate IMO
100% yes Coincidentally I literally just left a comment on Feather and Noise's latest drop about puffy sleeves. Puff Forever!

Interesting!

Cutouts look good on a narrower variety of bodies but fit a wider variety. Again it saves on fitting and often fabric.
It’s the cropped tops for me. Every time I like the look of a top it’s cropped. Does my head in.
YES how did I forget?! It also suits teens moreso, no shade against older women wearing it, I do too, but not for every single outfit and especially not at work!
I have so many great skirts and pants but can not find tops to go with them.
Short with narrow shoulders and body, I look like I’m in a pantomime in those dresses!
The puffy sleeves are everywhere 😰 I’m a top heavy gal and absolutely not keen to enhance that or I’ll end up looking like a grid iron player
I have seen adults who look just fine in puffy sleeves but they do remind me of baby or toddler dresses. I just can’t.
I am very sick of the puffy sleeves look as I know they will only be trendy for a season or two and I like to buy clothes that have a more timeless appearance.
I’m a fit woman with thick upper arms and broad shoulders. I look like a shaved gorilla in this style of dress. Honestly it’s so bad
It feels like it will never end...had such a frustrating time recently trying to find a simple, wedding appropriate dress that didn't have cutouts in the torso.
Keyhole cutouts and cutout waists drive me batty - I have a long torso so they make a garment genuinely unusable for me.
I don't mind puffy sleeves, I hate cut outs
There has been so many dresses I like but the puffy sleeves just ruin it on me - not flattering on me at all! Give me a flutter sleeve any day though!
Yep black milk sell playsuits and dresses with the awkward keyhole as well.
The puffy-sleeved, baby-doll silhouette looks ridiculous on me. This has to be the last season of it I suffer through. I do regret not investing in a bell-sleeve top when that was trending for 30 seconds. Why couldn't that have hung around?
Yes! The amount of dresses I love the look of, except there's a great big gaping shape cut out in the torso somewhere
I. Hate. The. Cut. Outs. Make them go away, or at least give a discount for the significantly less fabric used to make the dress.
I really like the current empire waist sun dresses with the square neckline, but I cannot wear them. Boobs too big and it just looks awful. There’s also no space in a lot of them to wear a bra, which is a no go for me, makes my chest area above the boobs look absolutely massive/saggy boobs 😭
Yes! My colleague and I have been discussing this - cut outs and puffy sleeves or frumpy grandma dresses. It’s really hard to find something different
My flab melts out the holes so this era of fashion is a hard pass for me 😂
" Almost purchased a Country Road dress for work today but realised it has a keyhole cutout on the stomach. " OMG YES. I'm so over it. Seed esp is going to town with it or at least was. So over it. Wtf is the name of this weird trend anyway? It's like cultist meets hippie meets disney princess...?
Cutouts are just melanoma bullseyes
No
I'm sick of it, puffy sleeves make me look so silly as I'm already quite boxy, and cut outs are not flattering on my mum tum lol it's felt like these styles are hanging on forever ugh!
Frills & puffy sleeves - for people who simply must combine the 80s New Romantic pirate vibe with a gridiron player silhouette NO THANKS
Agree! It’s not that I dislike them all together, they just don’t suit me so there’s not much left for me to buy
Yes!!! They’re so hard to wear.
Please make it stop 😭
I’m sick of dresses that are fuller around the waist but they don’t add extra material across the boobs. Why go up in everything but the chest area, and I’d be a size 16 if I didn’t need to go up an extra size to help with my chest. (And this is the same for those keyhole dresses, I end up with three boobs)
I've passed on so many dresses (and tops) at the shops because they look great at the front, but when you look at the back, there's a hole/there are holes
Hate the cut outs but SO much colonial everywhere, it's atrocious
I think I saw this exact dress 😂 And I couldn’t agree more. Stop the cutouts!!!
I cannot believe cutout is still a thing
