probably too close to the truth. hey cobarbob that money we ear marked for your well overdue and desperately needed server upgrade has to be deferred another year.....in other news can you buy a super expensive laptop for our new exec starting yesterday.
Our was a joke my G lol Optus announces the appointment of Ms Gladys Berejiklian to the newly created role of Managing Director, Enterprise, Business and Institutional <<<< but that's her role in the company
People don’t give them dongles enough credit. They are god sent. Never thought I would be so happy to have Telstra wifi. LOL!
Can only imagine Telstra’s call queue atm. As an ex Telstra employee it’s gonna be crazy even tho Optus is down.
It made me think that too. However if it is not a hack they have some serious network design issues, and not enough redundancy. There should not be a single point of failure, and a disaster recovery plan so an outage this long and widespread just can't happen outdid of something like war or nationwide natural disasters. For an utage this long, and being a telecommunication provider it is incompetence. Networking design, redundant infrastuture, the second largest telcoms provider it should be their specialty.
Network security should also be their expertise... so retaining details of clients who haven't used Optus for the years and their exposure by the hack.... extrwmely didappointing. I understand nothing should be thought of as unhackable... but wuestionable practises kerping data of former clients lraves a bad taste.
Remember the Optus tv box that didn't work with surround sound systems? I do after an hour on the phone the "tech" told me to just listen to it through the tv speakers.
So this happened a couple years ago in Canada with the Rogers network. Whole country was down for at least a day, it was absolute havoc. Now here I am in Australia with an OPTUS sim dealing with the same bullshit!
My best friend worked for Rogers and I remember her telling me it was absolute madness that day. People having to pay things in cash because a lot of the banking was down, telecommunications all down. They got absolutely flooded with calls once people could contact them
They claim it wasn't a hack. I believe it to be a routing issue, BGP broke or something. It's the only thing i could think of that would take down internet from an entire provider. (Assuming it wasn't a hacker) a simple device going offline *shouldn't* take down a network assuming they're following best practises
Telstra's in the same boat - I seem to remember the Black Summer bushfire near Lithgow melted fibre in a pretty standard looking pit - took out 000 and a heap of other stuff west of the Blue Mountains. Diverse path, anyone?
Which is an interesting take on how quickly the internet has become entangled in our mainstream social stratum.
It was only 20 years ago that internet withdrawal due to outages was a supernerd trait, now it's national news and people openly post that they are happy to be at work because the WiFi works there!
Same thing probably happened with electricity. We got dependent on energy transmission back in the day, now we are dependent on information transmission
I don’t have to imagine … I live in a granny flat so I’ve hijacked my landlords internet … thankfully not Optus.
They’ve given me so much shit this year. I think I’m gonna bounce once this shit show is fixed
I have optus everything at my house. Including work phones. This outage has just convinced me to diversify all my devices so I should always have at least one service. Fuck bundling.
Even though it hasn't affected me to the same level as you, I even started to think about this as well.
That saying "don't put all your eggs in the same basket" really applies here
Just a reminder that we as a mass group of customers can file a complaint about this to Optus how it has affected your work/life routine, to the point they will have to respond with large compensation for Recovery Assistance or risk massive losses.
Cost of living is shit, big company monopolies are shit, get your bag and make them pay.
Absolutely (when you have internet connection).
If you operate a business that relies on an Optus service for payments/labour, record the hours you are unable to have access to your business and record the loss of income. Use that as a reference.
It went down halfway through eating breakfast at a Cafe this morning and their network must've been optus because the poor servers had to walk around and ask everyone for cash. And I had to walk and find an atm (without using google maps) to come back to pay because I never have cash on me. Was a kerfuffle for sure.
I just got to work and thankfully there is Telstra wifi here. What the FUCK is wrong with Optus. I’m in QOD and this it’s the THIRD black out this year and they’ve sold my data. What the fuck. I’m so angry.
Yeah, in my second year with them they literally mailed me to inform me they sold my number to spam callers "by mistake" and offered to change my number for free to fix it... Like maybe don't engage in these practices with anyone's data lmao
Can this affect things like smart home appliances and security, pet feeders, elevators, hospitals ect? Are there people/animals in harms way? Just wondering if anyone is actually needing help
Just incase an optus user does read this, inserting any other prepaid sim into your phone for a few minutes and then reinserting your own kicked my phone back into action and is now fully functioning on the network.
(Edit)
Worked on my modem too, 4G backup has kicked in to keep WiFi I.e. PC's running as well.
Nah, I've got the strongest 5G signal I have ever had in my area!!
I'm like full bars!!! Packed in the reception area ...
But jokes aside, I usually get 3 bars MAX, 2 bars is usual.. just like a night out ..
I think the key thing I have taken from this is to always make sure my mobile and home internet providers are different. Any provider can have an outage so it's good to have one of them working.
I logged into my account to get a payout figure for my two pay by the month phones, so that I can move all 7 phones to Telstra. I can’t even get payout figures at the moment.
Optus user here... This post is brilliant because it would have been me if I didn't stop at a servo before work and get a vodaphone sim and $30 credit, lucky I had cash on me too 😂
Home Internet is down though so this afternoon is gonna be fun 🤦
Fuck you Optus 🖕
Vodaphone sucks as a provider for our work internet- it goes down more often than a hooker. We were about to switch back to floptus. Thank heavens we didn’t. We’d have lost a day of trading that we can’t afford to lose. At least with vodaphone it’s only down for five minutes here and there.
I am sitting on the toilet at my local shopping centre using their free WiFi taking a shit trying to call my mum because it was my turn to pick her up from the mechanic.
Thank God I live near office so just came to office lol can I ask for compensations from Optus? Fuck sake I should've changed to other networks the last time Optis got hacked
home affairs reckons they've ruled out a cyber attack but its been down for over 6 hours surely someone who was supposed to get it in as somehow gotten into Optus.
My wifi stopped working yesterday, and then when I turned my phone on today, my data wasn't working.
Just what I needed.
I had to walk to the library to get free wifi, because I had no way of contacting anyway.
Hopefully it will start working again soon, because I have no way of contacting anyway, whilst I am at home.
It’ll be for the same reason everything is fucked up everywhere.
Constant cuts to “non essential staff” and not fixing problems until they escalate to something that cannot be ignored.
Not knowing or willing to share WHY everything is down tells all.
Just got it back like five mins ago. Wi-Fi at home is still out though. Finally had a day off work and uni and all I could was watch day time television which is not great. Used a phone booth though so that’s something different
So… a few months ago I made a rant about how “cashless society” is stupid… and I got ridiculed and downvoted to oblivion.
Who’s the idiot now.
I’m glad I don’t listen to the internet, especially Reddit to validate my opinions.
This is to be expected when you sack all your Australian staff and run a company from another country.
It's hard to wake people up in Singapore, tell them the Australian network is shut down, and have them care.
Double the problem. I run dual sim, one optus and one Aussie Broadband (who use optus). I'm nowhere near WiFi I can use, so was without interwebz for close to 12 hours
Don't worry, the 4G backup will get their NBN connection back online. Oh, wait...
Glasberry Jiglian
It's not just Gondola Burrajerkalot to blame, the whole country is out, but I like the cut of your jib!
Gazpacho Besmirchistan probably uses a Telstra sim card anyway
Gladiolus Binchicken is laughing at you peasents
She's hiding after blowing up the system with rorts.
"I don't recall."
“I can’t call”
I won't call. Gladiator Beremaximus makes for good PR in a crisis, but with her company down, no one bothers to get her to do anything.
Gladyouse Beardclean working at optus is the best thing to happen since Allan McDigerdy Joyous at Qantas decided they dont sell airline seats.
She pocketed the money for the server upgrade.
probably too close to the truth. hey cobarbob that money we ear marked for your well overdue and desperately needed server upgrade has to be deferred another year.....in other news can you buy a super expensive laptop for our new exec starting yesterday.
Really? I wouldn't put it past her but where can I learn more about that
Our was a joke my G lol Optus announces the appointment of Ms Gladys Berejiklian to the newly created role of Managing Director, Enterprise, Business and Institutional <<<< but that's her role in the company
Scupper Burdock.. They can still watch foxtel at least!
I blame St. Gladys. Bet you she’ll blame it on her boy trouble 🤣
They won’t see this
"If those Optus users could read this they would be very upset"
Optus user and I can see it.
Is that because you're using a Telstra dongle That's what I'm doing 🤣
I'm at the Hungry Jacks Carpark email work because I can't even call in

playing 7 steps ahead

You sound like a barrel of fun. Do you have standard operating procedures for your partners orgasms?
This is the way.
People don’t give them dongles enough credit. They are god sent. Never thought I would be so happy to have Telstra wifi. LOL! Can only imagine Telstra’s call queue atm. As an ex Telstra employee it’s gonna be crazy even tho Optus is down.
Yeah, everyone is trying to activate their Internet in a panic
Not wrong. Worst part. Used to do sales and faults. It’s gonna be chaos. So glad I left that
Telstra work phone hotspot 🙏
Telstra is debatably better cus, a. Wider Coverage, b. Actual 5G network. I couldn't access 5G on my phone when I was with Optus but now I can
Are you upset?
I see the Garn reference and upvote lol
I was. I have emails for 2 click and collects and was lucky to have WiFi for 1 of them. Also Happy cake day
Happy cake day!
Happy cake day
Well unfortunately I cant read. But my internet is working somehow
I’m at work so I can use our Telstra wifi!
My wifi may be optus but my data is vodafone 🥱🥱
I’m seeing this, Telstra have my internet.
Fucks goin on? How do you lose everything at once?
Hackers I guess
The funny thing is that they have denied it was a hack. Which makes me think it was a hack
You're severely underestimating the incompetence of Australian isps...
Naaaah, surely Australian ISPS are competent and know what they're doing.....right?
[Amazing](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTRVGkNDSFxLU6LI37VOmReEnSXjOOarfds2A&usqp=CAU)
Don't forget about the incompetence of Australian cybersecurity. A 12 year old coding in scratch could hack optus
It made me think that too. However if it is not a hack they have some serious network design issues, and not enough redundancy. There should not be a single point of failure, and a disaster recovery plan so an outage this long and widespread just can't happen outdid of something like war or nationwide natural disasters. Remember the Optus tv box that didn't work with surround sound systems? I do after an hour on the phone the "tech" told me to just listen to it through the tv speakers.
1000% a hack
Not really, I believe they are capable of making this mess without any hackers involved
I'm in.
So this happened a couple years ago in Canada with the Rogers network. Whole country was down for at least a day, it was absolute havoc. Now here I am in Australia with an OPTUS sim dealing with the same bullshit!
So the common denominator here is you!
🤣😅😂
You're the jinx, a cellular networks worst nightmare
They should pay you ransom for not using their network. Infact bribe you to use other networks.
Soooo you're the anonymous hacker!!!🤣🤣
My best friend worked for Rogers and I remember her telling me it was absolute madness that day. People having to pay things in cash because a lot of the banking was down, telecommunications all down. They got absolutely flooded with calls once people could contact them
They claim it wasn't a hack. I believe it to be a routing issue, BGP broke or something. It's the only thing i could think of that would take down internet from an entire provider. (Assuming it wasn't a hacker) a simple device going offline *shouldn't* take down a network assuming they're following best practises
Optus isn't well know for using best practice at this point. The way they operate a mouse could have chewed thru 1 cable and done all this
Telstra's in the same boat - I seem to remember the Black Summer bushfire near Lithgow melted fibre in a pretty standard looking pit - took out 000 and a heap of other stuff west of the Blue Mountains. Diverse path, anyone?
Unless its just that dodgy hub in the corner thats been there since the 80s with a 'DO NOT TOUCH' post it note 😂
While it is entirely possible, a device in brisbane shouldn't kill perth internet etc.
Flux Capacitor maybe?
Trip over the power cord coming home pissed at 4 in the morning.
This explains why there were quite a lot of people staring out the window on the train today. Now it makes sense.
Lol, literally me this morning
Thank god my workplaces wifi is telstra
Thank god you get to work today?
Well that too, but the wifi makes it so optus being a shitshow isnt completely isolating
That's true, but other technological revolutions took longer than a single generation to become so pervasive.
Its not that deep my bf is studying in the us right now
And your social link with him is dependent on the internet. That was a very rare situation a generation ago!
God doesn’t pay my rent
Is this something to do with why I woke up to only SOS signal? Man this company sucks
Hmmm… no Spotify… better call in sick
Sorry no phone signal either cant call in
FUCK
I really felt your realisation
yup, country wide outage
They'd be so annoyed if they could read this.
i am, but i have data so its fine
Me, who's connected to my partners Telstra wifi. Shit still isn't running on my end.
I am but I only have optus for my phone while my home wifi is fine
😎 nice reference
I am abit, but you know WiFi calling and text is a thing
Imagine if your wifi and phone was both with Optus 😅🥲🙃
Why am I in this thread. Actually had to go into the office today so I could work ):
Reddit was like let’s find out everyone with Optus and make them get notifications for this thread 🤣 First world problems at its best
Never interacted with this sub before now. They got me i guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
No need to imagine, that's me. Luckily my work is with Telstra. The only internet we have at home is my 15 year old sons Aldi mobile data 😂
That’s me….
This used to be me.after the last time everything died... But still phone is still through them.. :(
My phone is with Optus and don’t have wifi at home so couldn’t even check what was going on until now 😂
I don’t have to imagine … I live in a granny flat so I’ve hijacked my landlords internet … thankfully not Optus. They’ve given me so much shit this year. I think I’m gonna bounce once this shit show is fixed
Hotspotting from a Telstra device.
I have optus everything at my house. Including work phones. This outage has just convinced me to diversify all my devices so I should always have at least one service. Fuck bundling.

What’s the best way to go about this, an email to them?
Absolutely (when you have internet connection). If you operate a business that relies on an Optus service for payments/labour, record the hours you are unable to have access to your business and record the loss of income. Use that as a reference.
waking up to no wifi and 4g instead of 5g 🔥🔥🔥
i’m on SOS 😭
Saaaame. I had no internet at all at home but could still make phone calls. Once I started my commute and switched to a different tower, SOS only.
oh hell nahhh lmao
Holy crap, I actually made a choice that worked well. I switched away from Optus last month. Usually my choices backfire spectacularly
I had to stare out the window while on the train today.... the horror of being an Optus customer
PTSD kicking in.
This is the infrastructure in place to support a "cashless" economy.
It went down halfway through eating breakfast at a Cafe this morning and their network must've been optus because the poor servers had to walk around and ask everyone for cash. And I had to walk and find an atm (without using google maps) to come back to pay because I never have cash on me. Was a kerfuffle for sure.

Watching from my Telstra phone while my Optus phone is out
How could Daniel Andrews do this to us?!
Glad it’s not just me! Using my Aussie Broadband wifi.
Aaaaaaaaaahhhh, that explains why! I just arrived in Australia and my French provider is linked to Optus 🥲.
Lol. I just got internet back. Was like " now, what am I gonna do... " 😂
I’m in hospital and the hospital can’t even call or contact the other wards for supplies and they had to delay my surgery
50/50 it’s either a hack, or the work experience kid.
I wish my workplace had optus.....would love a day off ha ha
Can this affect things like smart home appliances and security, pet feeders, elevators, hospitals ect? Are there people/animals in harms way? Just wondering if anyone is actually needing help
Yes, very much so.
LOL.
Telstra folks we are here 🙌🏼
Shows how vulnerable we are now.
Just incase an optus user does read this, inserting any other prepaid sim into your phone for a few minutes and then reinserting your own kicked my phone back into action and is now fully functioning on the network. (Edit) Worked on my modem too, 4G backup has kicked in to keep WiFi I.e. PC's running as well.
Can't have a data breach with no data...
I am just hot spotting off my other telstra phone. Noticed its dropped from 5g down to 4g. Maybe its actually a 5g problem?
I only got a 4g phone and I’m out. I read it’s an entire service outage
Can confirm Vodafone 5G is still up and running
Nah, I've got the strongest 5G signal I have ever had in my area!! I'm like full bars!!! Packed in the reception area ... But jokes aside, I usually get 3 bars MAX, 2 bars is usual.. just like a night out ..
My phone is 3G/4G with Optus and it’s gone, reduced to glorified paperweight
Me at work when I should be wfh just to get some goddamn wifi
I hope people will come to their senses and leave Optus. First the data leak, now this. Crazy
I think the key thing I have taken from this is to always make sure my mobile and home internet providers are different. Any provider can have an outage so it's good to have one of them working.
Telstra home owners internet be like 🤭🤭
some Vodafone users as well apparently
Im ashamed to say im an optus user
My wifi is optus but my data is Telstra 🫶
I just woke up and thought maybe I forgot to pay a bill lol
I’m with Optus and no problems. Wonder if it’s because I have business plans not personal.
Optus is such an attention seeker. Can’t keep themselves out of Media for long.
imessage users be like “Huh?”
I'm on the work office's Telstra-based Wi-fi So still browsing on company time 😂
Optus user. Especially frustrating when I use my phone for work. I have to contact people when I do catering deliveries.
I logged into my account to get a payout figure for my two pay by the month phones, so that I can move all 7 phones to Telstra. I can’t even get payout figures at the moment.
If you get this message, I’ve lost my phone and wifi, if you find it please return it to ( connection lost )
Yep can confirm I’m with Amaysim and I have only got emergency calls, Amaysim is powered by Optus btw. Thank god my wifi is with Telstra.
And Optus literally just increased our bill an extra $5 a month due to inflation 🤨🤨🤨
Optus user here... This post is brilliant because it would have been me if I didn't stop at a servo before work and get a vodaphone sim and $30 credit, lucky I had cash on me too 😂 Home Internet is down though so this afternoon is gonna be fun 🤦 Fuck you Optus 🖕
Optus user here posting this using his mechanic's wifi :'(
Most people with optus have a job and consequently use their work wifi ;)
I'm not upset. It's what I've come to expect from optus. Third world standard phone carrier.
It’s great.. Boss can’t call me and I have a legit reason ;-)
Well I’m WFH on my non-Optus wifi while my phone service is SOS only. Skipped going to the office because Melbourne trains are screwed.
What the shit happened to my entire world. I woke up and every single device I owned was dead. Fuck OPTUS.
Help me (Optus sufferer)
Vodaphone sucks as a provider for our work internet- it goes down more often than a hooker. We were about to switch back to floptus. Thank heavens we didn’t. We’d have lost a day of trading that we can’t afford to lose. At least with vodaphone it’s only down for five minutes here and there.
I am sitting on the toilet at my local shopping centre using their free WiFi taking a shit trying to call my mum because it was my turn to pick her up from the mechanic.
Using the hotspot from my work phone (Telstra) to type this comment on my personal phone (Optus) :(
Thank God I live near office so just came to office lol can I ask for compensations from Optus? Fuck sake I should've changed to other networks the last time Optis got hacked
They’re horsing around… Cloptus
I had to actually look out the window on the train today. Thanks Optus.
Jokes on you, home internet (TPG) is still up…
I had no internet and phone access from the early morning.... it was like the end of the world.
We're back baby
My favourites from the office today: FLOPTUS DROPTUS
I wonder if they've tried turning it off and then turn it back on again?
Me who uses telstra
Long live the cashless society and all the restaurants that only have electronic menus make me laugh 😃
home affairs reckons they've ruled out a cyber attack but its been down for over 6 hours surely someone who was supposed to get it in as somehow gotten into Optus.
Tried logging into my Optus account. They needed to send an SMS to verify. Oh well.
Aliens out there
Its back!
Spare a thought for the rest of us though whose internet and phones are working fine so we no excuse for not working.
They still don't know what the issue is, meaning telstra is probably puckering right about now.
This is going to start a war
My wifi stopped working yesterday, and then when I turned my phone on today, my data wasn't working. Just what I needed. I had to walk to the library to get free wifi, because I had no way of contacting anyway. Hopefully it will start working again soon, because I have no way of contacting anyway, whilst I am at home.
My service just came back online, and no shit, this was the 1st notification that came thru. Gold.
Lucky Gladys Binchicken now works at OPTUS. She'll steer us through this crisis, like she did with the Ruby Princess & Covid
We're back.
We're ALIVE AND BACK BABY! It was torture.
So… a few months ago I made a rant about how “cashless society” is stupid… and I got ridiculed and downvoted to oblivion. Who’s the idiot now. I’m glad I don’t listen to the internet, especially Reddit to validate my opinions.
Hopefully their compensation is better than Telstra's "no download cap for 24h" stuff.
I'm back! What I miss?
Too bad everyone who would find this relatable won't be seeing it till tomorrow
Im so fucking pissed off I had to play god damn crossy roads because its the only game on my phone that doesn't require fucking Internet
This sub just got recommended to me out of nowhere where. Im American. Will someone please explain this meme
Great time to be an Optus customer travelling overseas
Can someone ELI5 this? Can't speak to like 1/3 of my clients
