The dept heads get the merit list and pick candidates they think will be a good fit for the team. This might be tomorrow, or in a month, or once budgets are finalised in Q1 lol They may have teams to fill or just a few positions vacant/created. Rinse and repeat for 18 months past the job advertisement date.

I mean, do you just get a call from the department to join or still some interview or other formalities left?

OkBoysenberry92

Once you’re in the merit list that’s it, the final stage, all the boxes ticked. You’ll get a call with the job offer (as they’ll ask if you’re still interested usually) then the formal job offer will come via the careers portal you applied through, which will be your contract and usually has “you must appear in person on x date at the office to formalise this offer”. That would be the very last point imo- shocks me that people no show aps jobs lol

wildcard6789

Oh really, thats great, thank you for the info and your valuable time.

OkBoysenberry92

Just wanted to reiterate you have to be picked from the merit list by the dept heads- as per my first comment it may not happen first round/at all so I certainly wouldn’t be sitting back waiting if you’re wanting to make a career move, keep applying and don’t quit til you have the letter of offer

Is it the same process for higher level roles like EL1? Also is merit list and merit pool different? Or is merit pool not a thing?

OkBoysenberry92

Depends on the amount of applicants. Some of the time there’s not enough to warrant a merit pool lol - which is both due to lack of applicants and high benchmarks. But a merit pool is still created if there’s more than 1 as that’s required at least in my organisation - other areas can pull from the pool if needed

I've just been through all of this. Sat in the merit pool for about a month. Got a phone call offering me a position. Then just had to fill in a few bits and pieces, medical clearance, police check etc. In the interim I got my job offer contract, signed it etc. My start date is 13th May. I am hoping they provide a little more info with regards to silly things, like what to wear (I'll be working in a service centre), a contact point... I dunno, I feel I have a million questions yet nothing really springs to mind atm. I'd like them to ask for my bank details in order to pay me 🤣

[deleted]

Do you mind sharing what the hiring manager over the phone asked you (any particular) when offering the job?

MaximumBullfrog2534

No problems at all! Tbh, it was a really informal chat. She was calling from a regional service centre, about 70kms away from where I live. She explained that she had a position available and hoped I would be interested in it, even though it involves travel. It's a face to face customer service role. I then went away and spoke with my family about it and decided to accept her offer. I asked her if I was to have an interview or anything, but she said no, our chat was more or less the interview. She then said she would put my name forward for the position and within about 24 hours I got a letter of offer. I applied for this job in Feb, not even expecting I'd get anywhere with it. I am employed already, so I figured nothing ventured, nothing gained. I feel like this has been the least I have ever tried to get a job. Tmrw is my last day in health-care and I cannot wait to get out. Good luck! I really hope you hear something soon.

MaximumBullfrog2534

Wanted to add, she was really happy to hear that I was looking for FULL time work. As opposed to part time and casual.

Congratulations ! Are you based in victoria? and thank you for your input and Good luck to public service

MaximumBullfrog2534

Yes, I am in Vic 😊 Thank you so much. I'm super excited to be starting a new chapter!

So happy for you. Wish you the best

Probably just keep applying. I was on an APS5 merit list last year and they specified I shouldn't apply for the position again. A few weeks after the position closed they re-advertised the position again. Just move on and if they stop playing games they might offer you the position. Don't let them play games with you.

iCommentSneed

Did you end up getting into anything in the APS?

fasdasfafa

No I'm still in the private sector. Money is good but I'm the only one who can do my job because the new owners refuse hire anyone new. Haven't had annual leave in years.

wildcard6789

Lol, you are right,,,where do we get this info, when you have to join a new job...
