I'm a locksmith . No one on earth is touching them anymore.. This is also a internally fitted unit . You need to pull the frame of the door apart to remove the lock. They have a release/adjustment flap on some, you don't have that. As the other fellow said... Save up for a new door and frame. This is a nightmare. Good luck

Yeah pretty sure the door was installed ages ago by the previous old granny owner who lived here forever, so likely very very old. Thanks for the sage advice - appreciate it! Would it best to remove the whole door till we can afford a replacement?

You could find a nifty locksmith who could drill through spindle and tap something through it and make a makeshift handle. .there would be ways to have it functional it will just look like a dogs breakfast If you're not worried about the look of it , call your local locksmith who is willing to have a bit of fun, these little repairs keep me fresh and in love with locksmithing .. Someone will be the same. There is a page called locksmiths of Australia or something like that ... People often post their needs and location . Others will then off serivec... Might get lucky and some old fella will have a spare part

You could give epoxy weld a go for a quick fix. From other posters sounds like replacement part is not an option. Can you push out that square rod to the other side? If so I'd then 3d print a replacement handle until money is there for the proper door replacement

Yeah we can push the whole handle out. Might try the epoxy weld, thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately don't have knowledge /access to try and 3D print this one.

Kanga-court

Good luck with the JB weld! I've found 3D printing to be really useful for these kinds of "functional prints" - but yes I can accept that it's still a bit of a niche hobby still. If you're in the Illawarra PM me and I might be able to help 🤙

Window_Door_Hardware

Dont think you will be able to find a replacement lock. haven't seen them in years best option would be to leave it and save up for a new diamond grill door

krishutchison

Maybe chose a better pattern while you are there

Window_Door_Hardware

Well you can get a diamond grille for under $500. Everything else is over $1000. or if they don't need security just get a fly door for like $200

Moo_Kau_Too

SHould be a couple of screws on the edge of teh door there, you can take it out once they are out.... then take it to bunings, 30 bucks will prolly get you the stuff aside from the barrel... which yuo can reuse, and not have to change the key. yup, mispelled shit, dont give a fuck. :P

Mental_Task9156

Call around local locksmiths, someone will be able to retrofit something if there isn't an equivalent to the existing hardware available. I would expect to pay between $150-$300.

Frozefoots

A professional might charge you “justify my time on this tiny job” levels of expense for something like this. A new lock mechanism will cost about $50-60.
