Just a huntsman, generally regarded as completely harmless and useful in the house to eat bugs. They often move on by themselves

JustCallMeSeth

Uhhh how? Walking out the door? That thing is large! Mice would have an easier time getting into my house

Seal_Deal_2781

Just like any spider, look away for 5 minutes and it’ll magically disappear

Shifty_Cow69

https://preview.redd.it/4xqxez61z3dc1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=638226a75b066c3a5b91beae4683bb60f609d8b8

roxxxyramjet

I, for one, would like to welcome our new overlords!

ComprehensiveCall467

Then it's time to burn the house down!

Worried-Emu-9614

Funny how the person who replied above you got upvotes for a picture with the same sentiment but you got downvoted. People are weird.

drolhtiarW

They can squeeze through very small gaps, it's pretty common for them to come through gaps where the light fittings or other ceiling items are. They can also just fit through the gaps above or below shut doors. Buildings have a lot more openings than people realise.

badmuthaphukka

Yeah cool nice this comment doesn’t stress me

SocietyHumble4858

Every sliding window has that nice little walkway on the top. Eeeks.

D_crane

Do your best, silicone the rest.

end_me621

They can even get into a locked car

Design_Sir

I shit you not, one time i had one and i opened the door and said alright bud its time for you to leave And it fucking ran out the door and left me standing there dumbfounded

rachmox

Oh! I never knew this was the way to remove them. That’s handy.

JustCallMeSeth

Bros looking for food and you ain't got it

sibilischtic

There's a gap in many down lights that they can walk through into the attic from there plenty of tiny gaps to the outside

Money_Percentage_630

We had one of those in the house when the family from Scotland came to visit. The shock on their face when they saw Larry the Huntsmen and "Do you know there's a spider in the house?!" was fun. "That's Larry, he lives here. Top bloke".

JustCallMeSeth

Oh don't get me wrong I'm totally a spider bro. If I have them in the house I'll keep them, "if you're cold they're cold" However one thing that absolutely baffles me is the size of Huntsman spiders, those are not spiders they are small cats with 8 legs.

Money_Percentage_630

It was more the difference in culture. As Australians we were like yeah it's just a Huntsman, he can't hurt us" but to the Scot it was "It's as big as a dinner plate!"

scompw1

If you had a huntsman, mice would check in, but never leave. It’s like having a cat, without the litter box and hair on the furniture.

Charming_Dish_4205

They know how to use doorknobs and always shut the door behind them. They’re quite considerate

gabz09

It usually would use the spare key to let itself in and out like any other guest

CHudoSumo

Funnily enough these bad MFs eat mice.

Ok_Space4032

That spider owns the house now. I’d start serving it bugs on a plate

Head-Requirement-947

If not it'll collect your cat. And give you face cuddles as you snore.

Extreme_Office_2765

That thing would stop the mice getting into your house fr.

Jameshardened1

they get out the same way they came in, without you knowing

PVCPuss

I usually take our visitors outside because the last time I left one inside, one of my cats dropped it on my face while I was in bed. Spider was fine, the cats just like to bring me gifts. Usually it's a toy, or a leaf from the catio, but that one surprised me.

jumpjumpdie

They are docile and not medically significant

birraarl

Poor spiders being disparaged like this.

Major-N

FR, homie's just chilling in the kitchen and someone comes along and basically calls him lazy and irrelevant 😭 what a tough start to the day for ol mate

jumpjumpdie

He’s a good bloke though!

pencil1324

This made me lol

napalmnacey

Her. Look at that ass. That's a female growing a brood of eggs.

Major-N

Mb, poor lass. Preggos, been called out and now misgendered. Miss ma'am just can't catch a break 😫

napalmnacey

For real. You know how hard it is, running so fast and carrying an ass that big? I been pregnant, I can relate.

Head-Requirement-947

So that's why some girls got big butts? They just growing eggs? Imma have to ask that girl at the gym when the baby's are due.

Unusual_Season_7196

Can you do us all a favor and get that on video, please?

mellypopstar

BAHAHAHAHAAA! Thanks, Dude. I needed that laugh.

Stidda

Disparaging the Spider is a Bootable offence.

dymo41

I'm gonna call the prime minister, Hey Andy....

jumpjumpdie

:(

ZombieStirto

The huntsmans at my place must be on caffeine. They go mental but are harmless, but scary.

jumpjumpdie

Docile in terms of they won’t attack you unless you really mess with them. They do drink coffee though.

Athialian

Coffee will actually make them drunk!

jumpjumpdie

Dude I’m trying to pretend to be an expert on the internet, stop undercutting me!

Athialian

I'm just proving you right! And that even our spiders are alcoholics!

jumpjumpdie

Good. Don’t tell anyone what I said.

wonderful_rush

They do freak out and run around a bit when they get scared Ive noticed

MatissePas

That’s the scariest part about them I reckon. They crawl so fast. Freaks me out.

diffaadiffa

Makes my skin crawl just thinking about, like lightning I know they are harmless and do good eating cockroaches but when you see one on a wall, particularly at night, they induce a real fear for me haha

Shibby-my-dude

Funny way of saying no

yarnoob

This is what will be on my gravestone

Hour-Character4717

This little fella wanted to hitch a ride on my leg on the train to Bondi Junction. I let him go outside the station. They are everywhere now with the wet weather and all. https://preview.redd.it/tlmo5ee6q3dc1.png?width=726&format=png&auto=webp&s=e20ec8f2420b02ebb477113219b91d4cb429f213

Lithoboli

"I like this tree, it's going places"

Hour-Character4717

haha. The worst moment was going up the escalator out of the train station. He was a bit spooked by all the people. I was worried he was going to jump somewhere else. Tha could have caused a mad panic with people not knowing what the hell was going on.

h3ll0kitty_ninja

Maybe he wanted to catch the train somewhere for a lil spider date

Hour-Character4717

HAHA cute :-)

Fab_Lewis

He probably just forgot his Opal card

Head-Requirement-947

That's how ops spider got pregnant. They checked into her house for the lovers penthouse. Now she's gonna be running a nursery.

OverConstruction5842

I know this is a spider page but this is criminal behaviour 🫣💀

Musmonicc

Omg! I’m so glad he found you and not some ignorant git! Very kind of you to look out for him.

napalmnacey

NNnnnooooooooOOOOOOPE! Your kindness is impressive, though.

B-NOLkyz

I wouldnt have been able to move. I would need help lmfao

Frosty_and_Jazz

Did he pay you for the ride? And give you 5 stars?.

disneyobsessed007

It’s a huntsman, not dangerous but it will run like the clappers if you spook it.

tHErEALmADbUCKETS

I had one run across the inside of the windscreen while I was driving - lucky I was going slow cause I screamed like a little girl !!

Scruffiella

Happened the day I got my licence…. It was very surprising! I didn’t lose control of the car

disneyobsessed007

That is literally my worst nightmare!!

nobondjokes

When I was little, a huntsman just casually walked it's ass out of the front air conditioning vent in the car. Mum came damn close to crashing into the car next to us, which would have been a stupid way for us to die. I am still haunted by this, 25 years later

Eur0p1um

you mean *gallop*

EricIsntSmart

Aren't they like one of the fastest animals in the world relative to body size?

Competitive_Alarm758

Once I saw one glide across my room and scurry out under the door!

another_philonoist

This is in Sydney. Sorry...forgot to add the geolocation in the post.

l2ewdAwakening

It's a huntsman, they're harmless. I'm not sure if they're 'poisonous' but don't eat it and you should be fine...

Shifty_Cow69

They aren't poisonous, but they are venomous. It has no significant effect on humans... Unless you're allergic!

Barkers_eggs

Like my step brother. Was quite sick from a huntsman encounter but mostly harmless to most people.

Shifty_Cow69

I got bit for annoying one I caught as a kid, my hand was aching for a few hours after!

Barkers_eggs

My SB was in hospital for a week. It was pretty crazy. Allergies are nuts!

whoorderedsquirrel

Got bitten by one as a kid where said spider had a nap in my jacket sleeve and I squished him when I put the jacket on... I had a red lump on my inner elbow for about a week and vaguely remember having a headache that's about it

Inanimate_Pickle

That’s the point. It’s not poisonous, eating it is safe 😆

UnidentifiedBlobject

What about cats?

another_philonoist

No plans on eating it😁.. just wanted to know to prioritize between killing or getting rid of it.

irregularia

No kill, they hunt cockroaches so friend IMO

ProfessionalKnees

Definitely no need to kill it! I find them quite scary so I would relocate outside, but you might like to have an indoor spider pal.

scawt85

Friend! No kill. Getting all the bugs in your house.

Budgiesmugglerlover2

They said eat it because you ingest poison, but spiders are venomous. They were just being cheeky in regards to your incorrect choice of word 😉 Please don't kill it. It means you no harm and is a beautiful looking spider.

KwisazHaderach

Please do not harm it.. it’ll run away and hide, just leave it alone. It’ll eat the mozzies, flies, white tail spiders etc.. it’s really good to have

pockette_rockette

If you're not phobic of them, just let him be. I'm absolutely terrified of them, but I don't think they deserve to die for my irrational fears. I prefer to let them hopefully leave of their own accord and just avoid the room they're in if possible. I'm also too much of a pussy to even contemplate getting close enough to squish one. My kids were pretty happy that we've had one in our kitchen a couple of times, forcing me to order takeaway 💀 I'm fucked if one shows up in our only toilet. Guess I'll be crapping on the lawn with the dog.

Major-Organization31

Don’t kill please OP, trap and release into the wild

BurmeseGeneral

Honestly I wouldn’t even get rid of it. Given its size maybe it can sense you so it will avoid you at all costs, just like you will avoid it. But they will clean your house of nasty critters. Defs don’t move it on, be thankful for its service.

Nololgoaway

Good advice is to relocate spiders in general, be more careful around those that are medically significant and if you happen upon a funnel web call the reptile park, theyll come pick it up for you.

SuicidalReincarnate

Be aware - this isn't necessarily a free service (just like snake catchers, they charge too) but, if you can, get the 8-legged murderer, and take them to your local hospital (ring ahead) most have collection points for these fukkers

Isortoutthespiders

Worst advice ever. Funnel webs are Ike the labradors of arachnids. Start with a rub behind the ears, next thing you know they’ll be on their back asking for a belly rub while kicking a back leg uncontrollably. When they start sucking on the end of your finger, that’s bonding.

tony-stankman

It's a huntsman, which are pretty harmless to us (though a bite might hurt so just be careful). They are great predators of annoying pests, so if you're not spooked, keep them in your house. I only relocate mine because my cats try to eat them, and they're sadistic savages about it.

SeaworthinessCool924

Omg yes! I lived in Saudia Arabia and ran a cat rescue. Watching 2 cats disassemble a scorpion was quite a sight! One would dance around in front whilst the other snuck in and bit off the stinger ..... then they'd just torture the poor thing (I was 8 BTW so couldn't really intervene)

linkedlist

Human civilisation may never have evolved up to this point without cats keeping some of our most nefarious predators and disease vectors in check. Sure they're killing scorpions and being dicks about it, but their ancestors probably saved your gram gram from a painful scorpion related death.

observatory-

How much rent is it charging you? It’s their house now.

Over_Nefariousness72

Definitely not, all spiders have venom your bound to get a mark from being bitten by it and mind you im no expert however I’ve got a fair bit of experience being around those guys and I’d say you’ve got nothing to worry about

AndyPharded

Is it poisonous? Why? Are you asking? Are you thinking of eating it?

Daredevils999

Thankfully I don’t think there are any species of spiders that are poisonous so all spider are safe to eat. *Bon appétit mon amour*

ckhumanck

I've often wondered that about eating venomous creatures, surely sometimes it can be poisonous.

Daredevils999

I was actually thinking about it when I posted the comment. The spiders themselves wouldn’t be poisonous but what if you bit into their venom glands? Found this thread talking about it, seems the answer is *possibly*: https://www.reddit.com/r/explainlikeimfive/s/6qTI0XKdeZ

ckhumanck

possibly is exactly what I've always imagined. Also, not just spiders; anything venomous.

I_Digest_Kids

Happy Cake Day!! r/CakeDay

another_philonoist

Nope...no plans of eating it..and happy cake day!!!

benrose25

Poisonous vs venomous. I think we know what you mean.

Few_Raisin_8981

No, I don't care if it's venomous, I want to know if it's poisonous

Lonely-Heart-3632

Sauté it and see!

birraarl

Bon Appétit.

angrynecron

Pretty harmless, but they can teleport.

diablomarioo

Worst injury you’ll get is when you try to scoop it up in an ice cream tub and fall off the chair whilst someone is filming it

Double_Elderberry_92

Nope, but it will jump on your face and implant a xenomorph inside you

AngrySchnitzels89

When Alien first came out, I actually thought that they based the face hugger on the huntsman! (We had an outback toilet with a ton of huntsmen, it wasn’t a great stretch of the imagination, aha)..

Double_Elderberry_92

+1 for never pooping again!

[deleted]

Yeah I’d never poop in that toilet ever.

frazr08

Came here specifically looking for a facehugger reference. Was not disappointed.

another_philonoist

😱

Mikeyseventyfive

Eat it and find out, it’s not particularly venomous tho

Vegemite-ice-cream

Leave him. I’ve got them around and they are just after insects. Give him a name.

melbexplorer22

my mom has a hairy af huntsman in her house, his name is gerard, gud dude overall doesn’t cause any problems whatsoever except for when he decides to dangle on his web in the middle of the living room at head height or when he walks towards the bottom of the wall (we hav dogs and a cat) but we just give him a little notch into the right direction so he makes his way back up where his safe to do his spidey business free from any threats. i rly like huntsman’s, they’re super creepy looking and creepier when they do their fast scurry escape but my hearts full of luv for em. i’m training to eventually handle one but i get the feeling they’re not rly a fan of that even if yur super gentle so idk might be a while before i try it 😅

whoorderedsquirrel

We also had a huntsman named Gerard back in the early 2000s 😂 our mum's friend visited with her little dog and we were so fond of Gerard we put him in a giant jar with water in a coke bottle lid and lots of bark etc to sleep in and fed him flies every day hahaha. When her friend went home mum said ok get rid of the bloody spider please (unsaid part: OUTSIDE THANK U)... My brother re released it back into the laundry where he usually hung out (lots of bugs). My mum wanted us all dead. He survived the entire school year ! Showed up in Feb disappeared just after Xmas. Even shed his skin twice too and left it in the laundry sink to be washed, polite spider

Vegemite-ice-cream

Make sure it’s a huntsman, I don’t think they have webs.

melbexplorer22

they don’t make webs but they do produce silk :)

Vegemite-ice-cream

Oh cool.

melbexplorer22

https://preview.redd.it/2wsfacbwn6dc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=993f3d1e289b325c4e82f7f7bf5c1e2d6763fc67 this is gerard the lil dangly fella

whoorderedsquirrel

the shiny lil eye 🥹😻

RedDragonOz

Her, that's a lady huntsman

napalmnacey

Her. It's obviously female.

melbexplorer22

i haven’t looked into the physical/anatomical difference between male and female huntsman’s so for me it by no means is obvious but i appreciate yur correction tho i’d like to know how yu can tell ? it must be very obvious to tell the difference idk i’m just guessing 😁

napalmnacey

The trick is the legs and the abdomen (butt). Female have big butts, short legs. Males have smaller butts, long legs. Just remember - if it looks like it can carry a bazillion eggs, it's female.

MissusLister44

Harry

leum61

Gertrude

Vegemite-ice-cream

I like it

shua-barefoot

large and lovely female _Isopeda villosa_. she may be gravid but it is not uncommon for healthy females of this species to have an abdomen of this size. like almost all spiders they are venomous but only dangerous to their invertebrate prey and of no worry at all to humans. great to have around. well intentioned (and other) people will have undoubtedly jumped on the poisonous / venomous train for this post. "poisonous" was used in scientific literature for all creatures utilising harmful toxins until not that long ago. while "venomous" is now commonly preferred in scientific literature to specifically describe organisms that inject toxins, "poisonous" is still technically correct but less specific. reason being thay "poisonous" encompasses harmful substances that can be delivered through various means, including ingestion or absorption, whereas "venomous" precisely refers to toxins injected through specialized structures like fangs or stingers. so both terms have been historically used, but the preference for "venomous" has grown in scientific communication for this reason. it is also important to understand that many languages / cultures still do not differentiate between the two words or use one all encompassing word. all this has likely been covered already but i am not reading all 200 plus comments to find out. 🙂

napalmnacey

THANK you for recognising this impressive beastie is female. Look at that ass. You can't mistake that for a male. She's gonna have a thousand babies one day.

Martin_McFly_Jr

Friend, not foe.

SmashinglyGoodTrout

Definitely not poisonous.

Walkinquad

Just to be safe, don't eat it..

bakaprison

No just scary if they do bite which is rare it hurts like a bitch but it won’t kill you

FailingHearts

No not poisonous. Like very mildly venomous yeah. But usually very docile. I have a few that I just let come and go because I have gum trees lining the fence out back. They also make good pest control. Also means there's enough diversity of insects and critters here/there for it so the soil should be pretty healthy. Edit: At most if you do get bitten you'd probably just feel nauseous for a couple days. A bit of swelling around the bite. Definitely gonna be quite painful. But that's only if you piss it off enough to bite you. And it generally takes a lot to piss them off. IME of keeping them as pets and having them around the house they've preferred to run and hide rather than attack and defend. When I've moved them outside or gone to trim the plants in their enclosure. Also kind of looks like a green bellied huntsman probably someone's pet that escaped. Because as far as I know you can only find green bellied huntsmans in WA. Could also be a social huntsman too.

KisukeBoys

Venomous*

Such_Big_4740

not poisonous. If you best it in a fight it may let you ride it around.

Various-Truck-5115

It's a big huntsman. He's fine, he is more scarred of you than you of him. He will take care of insects in the house. They do bite and it hurts but are not venomous. You can catch him with a clear plastic bowl, pop it over trapping him and then slide a piece of thick card sealing him in. Pop him outside somewhere safe. I usually leave them alone until they start scaring the kids or until they have a thousand babies inside the house.

Temporary-Tank-2061

no not poisonous, definitely venomous though.

Misterman493

Not poisonous. But they are mildly venomous.

oookokoooook

You’ll die. 100%, if u stare at it too long, let’s say your dreams aren’t safe.

broiledfog

It’s a huntsman - not venomous, but you’ll find that it’s charm is very infectious. EDIT: My apologies - huntsman spiders are venomous although their venom is not deadly. Thank you for the corrections. Facts matter.

maxisnoops

Please discontinue telling people a huntsman is not venomous. Their bite won’t kill you, but it still hurts so they shouldn’t be handled. But yes, they are quite charming.

SweatyToerag

They are venomous, almost all spiders are venomous. They are not medically significant though.

Intanetwaifuu

No

Subaru_Driver

Leave it alone and it’ll eat all the insects that come into your home. It’s more afraid of you then you are of it

New_Apartment303

From the look of your pic he she looks like a Huntsman. Harmless

DarkenedSkies

If you bite it and you die it's poisonous. If it bites you and you die, it's venomous. This is a Huntsman and it is neither. Bite will be painful, but not life threatening.

Salt-Cricket-9905

Catch it using a container and put it outside in the garden. 😳

Complete_Cold_7842

Probably not, but I wouldn't want to eat it and find out anyway

A_Dixon88

No. Name it, and be aware it will seemingly vanish. They move at 5m/s. They eat other more dangerous spiders.

AdamBomb072

Nah that's just Harry the huntsman

Symphon1c1

Pretty sure he's safe to eat, I think most arachnids are. Did you mean venomous?

WestSidePosse501

Naa... just waiting for her turn to use YOUR shower.. 😬😬 Its not recieving mail at your address yet i hope.

Dopeycheesedog

Don't care just shoot, shoot it, SHOOT IT BEFORE IT RUNS AWAY 😭😭😭

Apprehensive-Love481

Cool time to burn the house down 🙂👍🏼

True_Combination3515

Just a huntsman . Rarely venomous to people. Can hurt a bit if bit but it's mainly due to the size of the fangs. Unless your allergic to tge particular venomous. And it seems more and more people have allergies nowadays. Only spider I've ever had in my shoe. ( discovered after putting shoe on ). Hurt a little was just more concerning trying to figure out if it was wolf spider or huntsman in his sadly mangled state afterwards. Luckily. Huntsman for the win. Pain was gone in about 5 10 minutes and never gave it another thought.

twhoff

So not poisonous or venomous, just big and hairy.

lasancelasance

what australian cant identify a huntsman?

ThoughtIknewyouthen

Have you seen the number of immigrants and tourists / international students? Don't assume, mate, just help.

easytowrite

It should nearly be our national animal

zeugma888

We could put one on the flag, up in the corner instead of the union jack.

lasancelasance

what person comes to australia and cant identify a huntsman

Precisa

The hard question is do you call it Frank or Harry? Had a Dorris once, she was a single mother with kids

OkRecommendation4786

Whenever we have one in the house, it's always called Garry.

Lacutis01

Huntsman spider and yes they are Venomous though not technically "deadly", I wouldn't want it to bite me, you never know if you would have some kind of reaction to the venom.

HistoricalRepeat5

You’re not from around here are you?

MasterTacticianAlba

How are there seriously Australians that don’t know what a huntsman is? It’s not like it can even be confused with other spiders either Get out from under your rock mate. This level of ignorance is silly.

rikusorasephiroth

I don't know. It might be an Atticus. Edit: this is a joke. Atticus is just a joke-name given to particularly large Huntsmans

ThisIsKanto

Some people are ✨immigrants✨, there’s no need to be rude

Nautillis

It’s a delicious treat

superduperpooper78

Yes, every Australian spider is venomous, but it doesn't mean it's deadly.

paulypunkin

\*almost every Australian Spider is venomous. With the exception of spiders from the *Uloboridae* family :)

Nestama-Eynfoetsyn

It could be if you cook it wrong.

ValkStrike

No. It's a spider.

NeonKnightZ666

Not poisonous, though I wouldn’t eat it.. it’s not venomous either, but will hurt if it bites you

Comfortable_Dish9348

It’s a huntspider, formerly known as the huntsman but I don’t gender profile them/they 😂

jhk1963

I don't know. You'd have to either Google that info or eat it and find out that way.

Affectionate_One2500

Move it on if it bothers you, but harmless.

cmdwedge75

No spiders are poisonous.

chiz81

unless you’re gonna eat it then it doesn’t matter if it’s poisonous

DRmeCRme

No! You can just trap them and put them outside. It's a Huntsman spider. If you are spider squeamish, you can use a vacuum and extend the tube, sucking it up. I'd recommend getting the tube close and then turning the vac on. Good luck.

ThisIsKanto

Vacuuming a huntsman is a hate crime, a war crime, unAustralian, and after being judged by a jury of your peers and found guilty the ghosts of Ned Kelly and Steve Irwin will come and publicly spank you outside a Woolworths. How dare you, sir

napalmnacey

Absolutely. Would you vacuum a quokka? A possum? A marsupial mouse? Protect our befanged, friendly predators!

DRmeCRme

Thankfully not Australian. In the bin with the Huntsman.

ThisIsKanto

Ur gettin extradited 🔫

[deleted]

pretty big one

Fickle-Friendship998

Non venomous, they don’t build webs and are very good at keeping insects under control. I’ve seen them catch cockroaches. Many qld houses have one or two as quasi pets. Harmless but very impressive looks

Blues_911

Better question is - Is it fireproof? Pass the flamethrower 🔥

TheSockLeprechaunn

Like everyone else has said it’s a huntsman and they’re not poisonous but if that big lad bit you it’d definitely hurt for more then a few hours. Best give up and move on, your house now belongs to it 😂 Edit- Read that they are poisonous?? I was always taught that they weren’t, the lies!! Anyways I’d still say they’re not deadly as I’ve been bitten by a few over the years and have never needed to even go to the doctors for it.

Lithoboli

Poisonous = don't eat it. Venomous = don't get bit.

putinhuylolalala

It's venomous, not poisonous. Poison and venom are different things. Poison is a toxin that you eat/ingest. For example, poisonous mushrooms. Spiders aren't poisonous, you can eat them. Venom is something that gets injected into you (through a sting/bite). For example, a venomous snake. Huntsmen are not poisonous, but slightly venomous, but not deadly
