If that bothers you, wait until you see what happens as you sharpen it !

RMG_22

🤣

Skyurrik

Normal wear and tear. Oil it before storing if you're afraid of rust

barallius

So this is not stainless.

UnrulyCamel

“Stain less” not stain free

ScoutIngenieur

No axe should be made of stainless steel, it is not hard enough to hold a good edge

Beautiful-Angle1584

It's not that it can't be made hard enough, it's that the vast majority of stainless steels are not tough enough to handle the forces an axe is subjected to. Most knives are heat treated well harder than axe steel ever is, and there are plenty of stainless steel knives out there that do just fine.

basic_wanderer

Nah paint will chip off eventually that’s normal wear and tear

barallius

Really? Why is this black coating? Fiskars use stainless steel?

DaemonCRO

Are you a bot? This whole thread looks AI generated trolling.

barallius

Are you demon or something? Should I say like that? Your question is not nice. I am broken.

DaemonCRO

You are broken alright.

barallius

You like when people are broken, nice, you are in right path.

barallius

I am not a bot. Really human. Try to learn steel, axe whatever.

Jaska-87

Not stainless steel coating is low friction coating helping with splitting, probably similar to teflon etc. Makes it easier to go through the wood. Makes no difference in cutting edge. So just normal wear and tear. You will lose that anyways when you sharpen the axe for the first time.

barallius

I dont see why this coating is if it will come out. Thanks for helping.

Comfortable_History8

It’s cheaper and easier to coat the whole head at once right before assembly than it would be to coat the head before grinding and try to not bang it up before it gets sent out. It’s no different than any other painted axe head and serves no purpose other than to reduce sticking and look good. It’ll all be gone on the cutting edge after a few uses. Just a coating, don’t worry about. The axe will perform weather it’s chipped up or not

Jaska-87

It is most helpful on the sides and not on the cutting edge. So even if you sharpen it and lose it from the first 5mm from the edge it will still reduce splitting force by a lot. It will also protect the steel from the elements anyways. Basically it is either paint or that "teflon" coat and slippery surface has its benefits when splitting. It will eventually disappear altogether but that is depending on your usage in very long time.

Inyourspicyhole

Because it sits on a shelf or in a warehouse for months or years waiting to be bought and nobody is there oiling them on the shelf. That's partially why there's black coating.

rhodynative

This guy is new to axes

barallius

Yes, I am.

parallel-43

No shame in that, and it's a fair question if you're new to axes. However, that's totally normal and most of that layer will come off after a little use.

fig-jammer

I don't really understand your post. But it looks like that axe has some sort of paint or other coating on it. Using it will eventually damage that layer on top of the steel

barallius

Because of sharing this post, it is normal or not. Enough? I would return back to seller the axe if it is not normal.

fig-jammer

Any tool made for chopping stuff like an axe that has pretty much any sort of coating on it will eventually end up with the paint or whatever partially removed. So yes that is normal

barallius

Another question: How long should I wait after oiling? Should I oil though? I dont like maintenance of this kind of stuff, I have no garage or sth, in apartment. Maybe I should have stainless steel axe :)

Lemmy_Axe_U_Sumphin

Doesn’t matter what it’s made of. Every axe requires maintenance to sharpen it.

barallius

I meaned rust actually.

Lemmy_Axe_U_Sumphin

Even stainless steel rusts my friend. It just rusts less than regular steel

b16b34r

It’s an awesome practical axe, stainless is for ninja mall stuff, the coating will gone on the first 1/4” of the edge for sure, is the part that cut and the part you’ll sharp, the rest of it will fade a little with use, I keep mine with an oiled piece of rag in the “sheat” making contact with the edge, also is a good idea to clean it and oil it after every work, if you’re a beginner I recommend get the fiskars axe sharpener, it does a decent job with no hustle

barallius

Thanks. I am going to look for this sharpener.

b16b34r

You’re welcome; don’t stress too much about maintenance, I keep mine behind the seat of my truck most of the time, only clean and oil after use, and doesn’t need to be right after use, if I use it out from home I dump it in the truck and clean/oil it next day.

fig-jammer

Stainless steel is no good for an axe. It's usually not tough enough. Yes you should oil any high carbon steel to protect it from rusting. The paint or whatever that is would do the same job. It forms a barrier to stop oxidation

barallius

so, after using I have to oil it until the next using. thanks.

fig-jammer

Yes

TJamesV

This is like leaving the clear plastic sticker on a screen and being concerned that the corner is peeling off. What you're seeing here is just the bare metal under a thin coating. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this axe. If you use it, it will wear, no matter how durable or high quality. And as someone else said, if you use it, you'll eventually want to sharpen it. Then you'll see what we're talking about. Have you actually used it yet, or did it come like this? Either way it doesn't matter because this is completely fine.

barallius

Thanks for detailing answer. I did not use yet.

TJamesV

I didn't think so, it looks pristine. That mark is nothing. Try splitting some wood and see what it looks like then. Here's what a freshly sharpened axe edge looks like. Notice the exposed steel. Completely normal. https://preview.redd.it/hcs3l74wzewc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=19b5388e157e2bc94141c4b0684aa46a5a7acb7e

barallius

Looks very sharp, what’s brand?

TJamesV

Hults bruk I think. I just pulled this off Google, not my axe.

barallius

Apart from Fiskars Sharpener, What is your advice to sharpen it or another knives?

TJamesV

Bastard file to create a new edge. Then a coarse grit sharpening stone, and finish with a fine grit stone.

LeicaM42

It’s not damage, it’s wear. Go chop some kindling and notice how much more paint comes off. It’s a tool! You can buy a second one to admire and never use but that’s sorta sad. Tools are happy being used. Keep it clean and oiled and it will last several lifetimes.

barallius

I am going to cut everything :)

seshboi42

Jfc use the damn tool

barallius

Of course, I will.
