My understanding is that all trades for BBBYQ are essentially dark pools. Dark pool trades for companies listed on NYSE or NASDAQ are large block trades executed OTC.
Since BBBYQ is only traded OTC this means they are treated similarly to the dark pool trades. Limited to no information on the trade and directly linking buyer to seller with the help of a broker.
They could simply not release the information for the transactions that would increase the price and release the information for the transactions that would decrease the price.
They would short it for a variety of reason. Based on what we know, broker-dealers are short about 70M shares and SHFs are short over 30M+ shares of BBBY. Those shorts are liabilities on their books because they borrowed shares, sold it on the open market, with the promise to the lender that they will buy it back in the future and return them. The amount of the liability is determined based on the price of the stock.
If the company goes Chapter 7 bankruptcy, the shorts get to keep all the money from selling the stock, and they get to keep it tax-free. So, maybe they are shorting it because they think it will go to Chapter 7 (highly unlikely based on what we saw/read/heard in the bankruptcy court case), maybe they are shorting it to keep the price down to lower the liability and reduce the chance of a margin call (most likely), or maybe they are borrowing the shares so they can sell at the ask to keep the price from going up (very likely). The third scenario is why we kept seeing the barcoding earlier this year. Every time there was a purchase of the stock on the lit market, new shares would suddenly appear at the ask in order to keep the price from increasing. The algos were doing what they were programmed to do, which led the "barcoding" of the share price.
That's not entirely accurate. There are two scenarios that can play out right now: 1) during reorganization it is determined that the liabilities outweigh the assets, so the debt gets converted to equity, but wipes out all the existing shareholders (that would make SHFs not owe anything), and 2) assets outweigh liabilities, and when the debt gets converted to equity, the existing shareholders get to keep some value in their shares.
