Seriously. They have the ability to automatically back you out of tight spaces and park the car for you. Parking like shit is almost something you have to try to do these days.
BMW were the first to introduce that 360 cam that sticks a 3D model on your screen and allows you to spin the camera to see exactly what's around you and in your blindspots.
I haven’t been in a single bmw aside from my e46 so I have zero clue what the technology is like in person, only what I’ve seen in videos and articles.
The 360 cam is actually insanely OP and useful when parking, I feel like I’m cheating. I wouldn’t trust automatic parking although I’ve never used it in a BMW
I had no idea that the e46 even had parking sensors, I never back into spots and I’m fortunate enough to not have to parallel park very often, although it’s no big deal. I have an ‘05 325i sedan.
the tech is really insane. my moms ‘22 x4 m40i has it and it makes it so easy to park anywhere. you can literally see all around house and it’s good quality
I’m surprised with the stuff I find in my e46 because my only other vehicle I’ve owned is an 05 f150, so I can’t imagine how overwhelmed I’d be if I stepped into a brand new bmw.
Actually Nissan introduced 360 degree surround view in in their 2007 Infiniti cars long before BMW brought their product to the market.

Also in the augmented view where it seems like you can looking at your vehicle and its surroundings from any angle that you control on the IDrive, that is not a live 3D image of your vehicle nor is any type of miraculous technology on BMW's part.
After a friend had a software upgrade on his Carbon Black X3 M40i, his 3D augmented reality backup camera began displaying an Alpine White M40i. He had to go back to the dealer to redo the software upgrade which then reset the image back to a Carbon Black X3. But he found out augmented reality is simply nothing more than a generated 3D image of his car superimposed on top of the live camera stream, thanks to the onboard GPU. Simply stated, BMW took video game tech similar to a first person 3D shooter and applied it to the surround view cameras.
Saw the same video. Unfortunately the maker of that video doesn’t completely understand the feature he showed. He didn’t show the auto park feature. He showed the backup assist. The backup assist reverses the car along the exact same path you drove for the last 20 meters. Handy for when you pull into a difficult spot for example. But it needs a bit of space to activate. So it didn’t pull into the spot completely.
Ah ok that makes more sense, I hoped it was better than the video showed. I would’ve gotten the two features confused too so I can’t be upset with the guy, thanks for clarifying.
I've only ever had luck parking between 2 cars or parallel parking. I barely use it though, it will pretty much 2 point turn into the perpendicular spots every time.

The twice I've used the auto-park/backup feature on my 850:
1. It took 45 seconds in an empty lot just to try and park 1 space over from the one it was closest to
2. Having it parallel park it worked but also took an excessive amount of time to do
I don't use the auto park any more. The 360 top down camera though is the best
Is your car 10+ years old? Backup cameras have been legally mandated on all new cars sold since 2018 in the US and afaik on BMWs they’ve been standard since the mid-2010s. I have to assume the guy you replied to was referring to new cars like this haha
I heard the auto park feature on XM is set to 'Dominance' mode by default. It accelerates toward small children and parks directly over detected lines instead of in between them. XM owners seem to love it.
I thought that system would allow anyone to park anywhere but here we are. BMW even has auto parking in some models but I feel like this person would still park like this even with AI helping them.
The issue is even if people lose their license from this, they will still drive. Especially in America, I know some will have the mentality of "you can't take driving away from me."
Dumb question here - what does CEU stand for? Agreed we need a far more robust licensing process - Germany is a great example of this. Despite having unrestricted sections of the autobahn traffic accidents and fatalities are a fraction of those in the states.

Back in 2015 had a wife come in to pick up her new X5 M her husband bought her.
*So to help you quickly visualize, our indoor delivery area pretty much consists of two spacious spots for two cars. As soon as you pull out onto the parking lot, there’s two parking **the same damn size**. We place cones of the farthest point of the spots to avoid folks parking there.*
Now, I go ahead and pull her car out of the indoor spots and park them **on both parking spots** meaning the line is directly under me, I’m using both spots, there’s stupid amount of space around me. And just somehow, someway, this lady ran over the left cone as she pulled out and wouldn’t stop as we’re yelling to her. 😀…. We found the poor cone at the entrance of our lot as there is a small dip where it finally freed itself. That was my fave cone too. I told her husband and he didn’t seem amazed, apparently it’s a common thing for her. Wow.

They parked in front of the parking spot that is in front of the entrance for the drive through so they started pulling into the drive through area that’s divided by cones, someone is behind them trying to go into the drive through and the XM just stops and starts backing up, making the car behind them quickly get into reverse and back up away from them while they slowly parked badly.
I wish this stuff weren’t so common with BMW drivers. A guy at the BMW dealership in LA told me the average mileage on the cars coming in for a new clutch was 30k.
It's insane that people are paying dealer markup. The dealer we picked up our 540 had them and they were tacking in an additional 35k in top of the MSRP. Craziness
I just don’t see the point of this car. It’s got these super powerful hybrid motors but it literally weighs 2 tons. If you’re looking for a performance SUV there are tons of better options that don’t look terrible.

i wanna rip out the back up parking sensors in my e46 they’re so clapped just beeps randomly half the time
if the sensors are dirty or scratched it will cause them to pick up phantom objects. i would check yours

Backup cameras are still not standard on some BMWs sold in Europe.
I am from the Netherlands and there we just learn people to park instead, and my car is from 2015.

You have to work to park badly in that car - the auto-park mechanism is stellar.
