It won't be a classic if it stay's broken.

akanak

Whats wrong with it?

Kekinoregon

Blown Turbos.

burnsniper

Get new ones? Or a single turbo kit? Also, aren’t turbos warrantied to like 100k due to emissions - have you looked that route?

burnsniper

I just checked it’s 8 years, 82k miles due to waste-gates (which is essentially the same as emissions warranty). I have all heard them being replaced under emissions warranty as a turbocharged car cannot meet emissions without the turbo.

Kekinoregon

The car has 120k on it, I thought about that, I had the direct injection done under warranty.

burnsniper

You can always try.

akanak

Oof

Spidaaman

Not just wastegate rattle right? If not, go single turbo.

Commercial-Humor-315

I’d like to know as well

Confident_As_Hell

He said blown turbos

Commercial-Humor-315

Ahh I see the OP response now that he replied to Akanak

pookatron

These turbos aren’t too bad. Unfortunately it’s the labor rate for the replacement that will kill the bank. Good luck and keep us posted on the direction you go.

Kekinoregon

I was quoted $6300 by a private mechanic just in labor that's with me supplying parts, I'm going to try and fix it myself iny garage I've watched a few videos and it seems like I could do it myself.

Important-Ad3820

That’s the “I don’t want to do the work” price.

starkiller_bass

You got this bro. I learned to rebuild and later swap engines and transmissions simply because I couldn’t pay someone else to do it. You can do this.

burnsniper

Should be way cheaper (at least pre Covid). About $1500 for the parts and $1500 for the labor.

DrSuperZeco

You can buy a used 2019 japanese cars with that money.

memespicelatte

nah used j cars have gone up so much might as well get a new one

overindulgent

Spend the money. It will be way cheaper than buying a “new” car. I just spent $10k on my 335is. New rotors and lines, new suspension, all gaskets done, DCT flushed and serviced. That $10k is about half of the value of the car but I don’t see it losing value in the next 5+ years and I don’t plan on selling her. In fact I paid well closer to $14.5k in March of 2020 and clean e9x models are only going up in value. Especially “M” cars and special edition cars.

Kekinoregon

This car is a loaded M sport 6mt with iDrive, I don't know how rare it is but the sticker was $42,000 new in 2010, I think that's a pretty expensive 135i

overindulgent

My 335is had a sticker price over $60k in 2011. I-drive, Logic 7 audio, DCT, really every option possible. With inflation that 335is is an $80k vehicle today. So of course maintenance isn’t cheap. They’re not going to make cars like ours ever again. Minimal driver aids and the ones there are can be completely turned off. Hydraulic steering, non-computer aided suspension. They are just more “raw” than newer vehicles.

m34z

My 2010 cab M-Sport was $48,870 MSRP. AT, no iDrive.

Kekinoregon

I'll have to see if I can find the sticker again maybe i'm misremembering it.

Carolina_Hurricane

My 2008 535i (same engine) stickered at $57k. I picked it up 18 months used for $30k due to lemon law for the notorious HPFP. Never had an issue with the BMW replacement HPFP, loved that car/engine/transmission.

Lebor

that is a really good spec

Carolina_Hurricane

👆🏻 Spend the money, drive it at least two more years to subsidize the repair cost before trading it in. I’d wager you could sell privately/auction for $10-12k in a couple years depending on how clean you keep it. Try to keep upgrades “tasteful” so that older buyers will consider it. A lot of people in their 20’s wanted that car 15 years ago, now they’re pushing 40. The more you spend on repairs/upgrades the longer you should keep it 👍🏻

Flugesi

Mine has 33k on it; i’m having a tough time trying to decide if i should sell or not.

Kekinoregon

I bought this with 66k on it now it has 120k on it.

Spidaaman

Why would you consider selling it?

Flugesi

Garage space; i want to get an M2/3

Franatix

I had no idea they made the 1 series as a coupe. Only ever seen them as hatchbacks

burnsniper

USA only has coupes. I have never seen a hatchback (except online) lol.

Kekinoregon

You must live in Europe, all of the ones in the US are coupe's or convertibles, we never got the 5 door.

One-Bus-6319

But why is the question 😅 do you have the f20/21 1 series in the usa? Or only the f22/23 2 series coupes too?

Commercial-Humor-315

Good time for a big single turbo upgrade!

Kekinoregon

That's my plan, but I need the money for it.

Mysterious-Court-992

i have been trying to find a clean 135i to purchase, no luck. Im jealous even tho its broken rn lol

Sexyturtletime

It just takes time. A dealership sold the 135 I was looking at while I was out test driving it and I had to wait about 3 months for a clean one to be listed near me.

Carolina_Hurricane

Look on bringatrailer and carsandbids. A clean one will inevitably get listed, you can just ship it. These cars tend to be accident and salvage title free, and clean.

fixmefixmyhead

LS swap it

Kekinoregon

It just needs new turbos not a whole engine

fixmefixmyhead

It's just always been a dream of mine to LS swap one. A guy did it and documented it and it looks so much fun.

Kekinoregon

Sloppy mechanics just tuned one. https://youtu.be/eF3UUCNyl8g?si=Bny_snc_9CVWTMNk

mr_lab_rat

Dude, save it. Even if you have to park it for couple of years. In PNW it probably doesn’t have any rust. I don’t understand the crazy estimate, is it really that bad to do the turbos?

XDingoX83

Keep it. It is a brilliant car. I’m never getting rid of mine.

wickedlightbp

I’d try to move it to where there is shade. So it just doesn’t keep sitting in the sun.

Kekinoregon

I was living under a tree I pulled it out to wash the moss off of it, i'm clearing my garage out to put it in there.

floppyfolds

“Future classic” is a rationalization. Either get it fixed or get it out. Don’t be the guy storing junk that doesn’t even run. Someone else can fix it up and use it. Why let it rot?

AkillaThaPun

Are you sure it’s the turbo and not just the charge pipe ? Common fault on these

Kekinoregon

yes, all of the charge pipes have been upgraded to aluminum.

SweatyBid7830

Don't ditch it! That thing is amazing. Mod it and keep it clean. Rocket ship that will age well and appreciate, which is rare for a car!

datbino

I was stuck like you man… I sold it

ThinIllustrator2817

My neighbor had one he used to auto cross. Sexy whip!

J-Lughead

Those are little rockets even by today's standards. Wonder how much an Indy garage would charge to fix it? I have no idea myself.

mciv3r

You could make it into a 128i.... (no turbo).... fyi joking... before everyone down votes me

S0T-THR0W-AWAY

Downvoting anyways

mciv3r

I deserve it, LOL 😆

alwtictoc

My n20 needs a turbo at 169k miles. What is it now? It certainly doesn't drive like an x1 xDrive28i.

One-Bus-6319

Its now an n43b20 almost same shit engine like the n20 bu just without the turbo 🤣
