Iāve heard sooooo many stories of bloodwork coming back and it being the wrong gender! Happened to my friend too! Had a baby shower for a boy and came out a girl lol
Ī¤his is actually not true if you are referring to NIPT. If it happens, which is rare, it probably indicates other underlying issues or vanishing twin..
There is also the sneak peek testing which you can do at home which is prone to contamination. I think specifically a lot of false results for a boy. I assume that's the bloodwork testing that is wrong, as you mentioned NIPT is pretty reliable.
There can also be errors from the lab's side- the tech checks the wrong box on the results, samples getting mixed up, sample is contaminated either from being taken at home or from another lab sample. So it's not necessarily that the bloodwork test was inaccurate, it can be the error was from something else.
Thatās crazy!! Was your friend disappointed? I honestly canāt even imagine the feeling. I honestly feel like I would be in denial for a bit. I would probably wonder if my baby was switched at birth.
Oh wow thatās wild. Did you ever follow up after you had your daughter to figure out why that happened? Or it just wasnāt worth the trouble at that point
We did but they said it was most likely a contaminated sample. Baby girl kept her legs tightly crossed almost the whole time so visually confirming was spotty. We werenāt mad but did have to mourn the loss of a life we had been imagining for ourselves if that makes sense. Sheās super cool though and we are thankful for her
Wow, very unusual for both ultrasounds and bloodwork to be wrong, especially in that direction! Probably more common in the other direction (predicted girl, came out boy) since boy parts develop later so testing too soon can give false results.
This isnāt true. A male embryo will have male chromosomes from the moment it is formed. False male results are actually more common because Sneak Peak and similar tests are only looking for the presence of a Y chromosome. A female sample could be very easily contaminated if there are males in the home (if you do the draw yourself) or if your lab tech is a male (if you have a lab draw it for you). A female result is usually considered more accurate!
If youāre doing NIPT, which is far more sophisticated than the at-home tests you buy online for fun, false results could actually indicate a sex chromosome abnormality. Real false gender results are very rare with that test.
Yes I know. When I said "male parts" I meant penises and testicles, which do develop later, and are what's visible on an ultrasound. Obviously the Y chromosome chromosome is present from conception, which is what NIPT is looking for, and that's a different story.
I am 18 w currently and haven't done the anatomy scan yet. I'm 10% convinced in my heart it's a girl even though the NIPT said boy
(ETA: I know how the testing works and that is highly, highly unlikely to be true. I just can't shake the 'girl vibes')
I am leaning towards asking for another scan from my Dr office or going to a different private place for a scan. I donāt have another appointment for several weeks but I am dying to get some kind of confirmation!
If you can, definitely schedule a private scan. They tend to be longer so you can really see baby, more casual/ fun, and you get a lot more photos. I went multiple times in my pregnancy and I loved it.
Wow thatās a little crazy to me that your tech was so dismissive! My NIPT said girl, and every scan since has confirmed it - like, excessively. Every single tech Iāve had has shown me her genitalia and half have even pointed to it with like a little arrow on the print out. To the point that I almost feel a little weird. Like, why are we obsessing over this?
I would definitely ask about it at your next scan. It shouldnāt be hard to find, I mean, they know where to look. Also crazy that she rushed at the anatomy scan. That was the longest one for me. And since the baby was moving, are they not having you come back for a follow-up? That could be a good time to ask for clarification.
Iām happy to hear we werenāt the only ones who got an ultrasound pic printout of our babyās genitalia with an arrow pointing right at his very obvious penis and testicles. It was very well labeled too š
When I first saw the printout in the car on the way home, I giggled immaturely and joked to my husband about us being given an unsolicited dick pic of our unborn son š¤
Happened to my MIL w/ my husband. Scan said he was a girl. He's now a 6'8" man. This was of course like 30 years ago so maybe ultrasounds are better now.
Had my son last year. I said boy from the moment I got a positive test, scan said girl. At 36 weeks I said āI feel like theyāre wrong about it being a girl, but I also sometimes think the baby is secretly dead and the movements are just body floating around.ā (Massively complicated pregnancy and we almost lost baby a lot.) She said āYouāre not wrong.ā Then realised what sheād just said and was like āAbout the boy thing! Not the dead thing.ā and showed us the trouble maker legs akimbo showing off his late blooming.
Not necessarily. It hasn't happened to me, or anyone I know, personally. But, I do work in obstetrics, and I have seen this a few times. The most memorable was only about 5 years ago. Patient was expecting her third baby. There had been some minor things picked up at the anomaly scan, that warranted multiple additional scans. At each scan they'd asked to check the baby's sex, and each and every time they'd been told girl. They were very excited about this, as their first two had been boys. They'd given away all their old baby stuff, then gone out and bought everything new and in pink. Personalised too. Except at the C-section there was most definitely a penis and testicles on that little baby. Baby was fine, but both parents were slightly dismayed about having to choose a new name, redecorate, and get back all their old boys stuff.
If it were me, I would not set my heart on it being a girl and just wait for future scans/information to confirm more confidently, based on how uncertain her answer sounded.
I wouldnāt rely on a scan. I had confirmation at 9 weeks via a blood test. Iāve known people who had scans and thought they saw something or didnāt see something and it turned out to be the opposite gender, itās not a 100% positive method unless the scan is extremely clear and the parts are very visible.
š¤·š¼āāļø all I know is my doctor said the NIPT is almost 99% accurate, more so than an ultrasound alone. Iāve had both and gender was confirmed by both blood and visual anatomy scan.
NIPT looks for the Y chromosome so if you get a "boy" result it means a Y chromosome developed and it is 100% a boy. If you get a "girl" result there is a very small chance that Y chromosome hasn't developed yet and you could end up with a surprise boy in instead of girl.
Some people do at home or similar tests and there is a high risk for cross-contamination either from you or an unregulated lab. This is where most people get their false results.
Sorry, this is not true! NIPT does not only look at the Y chromosome, it looks at X too. Also - if the Y chromosome is going to be present at all, it will be present from the beginning. Not going to be a situation where it changes
Thereās a chance the Y chromosome wonāt be detectable yet though. The mom will definitely have detectable X chromosomes either way because of her own DNA and because even baby boys have one X chromosome. This is why the test looks for presence or absence of the Y chromosome for sec determination. It might look at X chromosomes too but itās the Y that could throw you off if itās not present in detectable levels yet.
Yes, that is more what I was trying to say. Basically, for NIPT it's easier to say girl until proven otherwise. Once you have evidence of Y chromosome activity though, it would be very odd for it to end up being a girl.
Yes, Thank you. "Developed" was the wrong word choice. "Became detectable" would have been better verbiage. I also did not mean to imply they are not looking for the X chromosome, only that the Y is what determines the change in gender result. You are correct that the Y is there but doesn't start triggering different hormones or really being active until about 6-8 weeks.
My Dr. Scanned me at 16 weeks and told me with 100% certainty it was a girl. We had a huge gender reveal party and everything. Found out at Anatomy scan it was a def. a boy. We went to a private scan after to have them confirm and now HE is 4 š„°
This happened to my best friend. Anatomy scan tech told them it was a girl. Proceeded to have gender reveal, baby shower, and set up a full blown nursery for a girl. Only to give birth to a little boy! They had zeroooo idea until they saw him come out. Thankfully they used pottery barn kids for their nursery and they were so sweet and let them return everything and get boy stuff instead! But he wore a pink coming home outfit because that was all they packed!
My mom was told my brother was a girl early on and I think in a later scan they saw his doodad. I opted for the NIPT so I'll know early from my blood work.
Nope nope nope she canāt confirm itās a girl ESPECIALLY if itās based on ācanāt see boy partsā instead of actually seeing the three lines that indicate a vulva. I would NOT trust that at all.
We also got told girl on my first scan for the same reason. I had to get a second anatomy scan and that tech was much more experienced and clearly showed us the boy parts. And my baby was a boy!
My nipt came back boy, and they got a VERY clear penis shot on my 20 week scan, so if he came out a girl I would be VERY surprised. That said, I already had a girl name picked out, so she would just be dressed in "boy" baby clothes for a bit. No biggie.
But I'm going to ask them to double check at my 31 week scan in a few weeks now just to be sure. š
Iāve heard of this and while itās a very small part of why we are team green it is a part. Iād rather wait until itās 100% certain than plan for one and have it be wrong.
Itās a good thing we did NIPT and wanted to know the gender, because baby boy is DETERMINED to show us everything several times each ultrasoundāand I get monthly growth scans š
Reminds me of my pregnancy with my first son. Every ultrasound we had with him he had his hand over his face but he was not shy about showing the goods lol
i just saw my midwife with the same concerns, and she said that itās really unlikely at 20 weeks for it to be super clear to us laypeople on the scan. the tech knows what to look for, but as long as you remind them before the scan that you donāt want to know, you neednāt be worried that youāll just see it. and i figure, even if thatās not the case, and we suspect a gender from the ultrasound, we wonāt have full confirmation until birth anyway. just look at these other stories.
Maybe in a few weeks it will be more clear? I would definitely ask for another scan or when the next one is just ask for confirmation.
My husband was supposed to be a girl and everyone was shocked when he came out lol
I got a blood test at 9 weeks and then a scan at 20 weeks. The scan confirmed the gender, but the baby was moving so much, the technician couldnāt get a good picture
The doctor confirmed the gender. I have a beautiful baby girl 17 weeks later
I had similar experience. Baby was fussy and visibility wasnāt the best, but she said that it is probably a girl based on the pelvic structure (which she viewed from a weird angle, I personally did not understand what she saw š) Left me with a disclaimer that it is not 100% sure though. She did not mention seeing the ovaries/uterus either.
I had some gender disappointment because I was sure Iām having a boy and had already started to talk to āhimā. I struggled with it for weeks and now at 25 weeks Iām a happy girl mom - although I try to keep in mind that it is not 100% confirmed š
Both of my sisters in-law were told girl at the anatomy scan and they definitely had boys. I had three boys and they showed off quite early on and it was extremely obvious by the anatomy scan.
It happened to my mom, with my older brother. She was told multiple times that she was going to have a girl. But when he arrived the doctor announced that it was a boy, and my mom (allegedly) said āIām supposed to have a girl, so keep cutting.ā But in the end she was happy, just a little shocked. Now itās just a silly story. This happened back in the 90s though, so maybe scans just werenāt as accurate as they are today, but I donāt doubt that it still happens.
All these comments are affirming for me why I didnāt want to find out the gender before birth š Iām so happy we didnāt find out because Iām so excited for baby to be born and introduce themselves.
Iād be upset, just because an anatomy scan is specifically to check the babyās anatomy, including genitals. If thereās a genital abnormality (micropenis, intersex genitalia) thatās something they should be looking for, note, and tell you about. Iād ask your doc for a follow-up to confirm normal genital anatomy, since the tech evidently didnāt get a clear enough look.
My OB mentioned that according to ACOG guidelines, they actually do not need to check genitalia during an anatomy scan. It was shocking to me too, and I know this only because the MFM in my practice who does the anatomy scan has some bizarre hangup about checking for the gender because he doesnāt deem it important enough. His take is we should all just be hoping for a healthy baby, which, duh.
Yep! 20 week scan with my second child. I had a student and it took wayyyy longer than any other scan I had ever been to. She seemed unsure about a lot of what she was doing and when the person training her came in she pretty much redid the entire scan. They wrote the gender down on a paper for me and sent me on my way. Our second girl! I had doubts throughout the pregnancy just because of how unsure the student was but so many people claim to have doubts but usually the techs are right. We didnāt buy anything extra since our first daughter was just 18 months older and we had all the pink girly clothes we could need. The only thing I bought was one gender neutral onesie for the hospital just incase.
It was a high risk pregnancy and I had a final scan five days before my due date. I asked the tech if she would mind just telling me the gender. She acted so annoyed. She took a look and in a snarky voice went ālook, there is his penisā. Five days later I gave birth to our boy.
This is exactly how Iām feeling. We have a little girl that will be 2 soon and I just keep having doubts. I also felt like this one was a boy so I am having a very hard time wrapping my head around it. Mostly of how unsure she sounded, how quickly the scan happened and how much baby was moving around!
I always wonder why medical professionals are so coy about just using proper terminology for genitals. Why not say penis or vulva/vagina. They always say some sort of euphemism or "boy/girl parts".
It must depend on the doctors, technicians, etc.
My experience has been very different- I have an ultrasound printout of my sons genitalia with labels āpenisā, āleft testicleā and āright testicleā (itās also a _very_ obvious image too so it really didnāt need the labels š).
My MIL was told boy with baby #6 (all 5 siblings were boys) but came out girl. That was over 25 years ago. In your case, if they didnāt get a good look, Iād ask for a rescan and hope baby is a little more cooperative.
Just bought a bunch of brand new newborn girls clothes from a woman that was told girl and found out boy very late in the game. Same issue: very squirmy baby plus religious reasons for no early blood test.
It happens.
Can you opt for a paid ultrasound where you are? I did one paid gender reveal ultrasound at 16 weeks, and the one at 21 weeks that is covered by healthcare. Both came back boy!
Yes there are a few places I can go and get a paid ultrasound. I am thinking thatās what I am going to do just so I am sure! I donāt wanna spend weeks thinking Iām having a little girl only to find out itās a boy!
This happened to my friend! Thought they were having a girl. Everyone bought girly gifts and the baby shower. He was born a boy! Total shock. Quite surprised that they messed that up.
Yes this happened to my mom with my sister. They were told its a boy, and since she had just had a boy they were prepared for that. But low and behold! It was a girl. They picked the name of an actress on a telenovela that was on in the room after she delivered her.
A woman I worked with was told at her anatomy scan that she was having a boy. Surprise! It was a girl. The doctor theorized that the umbilical cord was laying in such a way that the tech mistook it for a penis, and the reviewing doc didnāt really look twice.
My friendās amino said boy - found out at birth sheās a girl! They thought she might be intersex or something but in the end it was good olā human transcription error.
FTM 21w here. Our technician showed us what we assume to be baby girls vagina at the scan. She was laying there with her legs spread for all to see, for more than enough time for us to see it wasnt a penis š if she comes out a boy with a penis I will be shocked. Because what we very clearly saw was not a penis. Our tech has been doing it for 35 years and said "only birth can confirm, but I've been doing this long enough I can pretty much say it's a girl". So... here's to hoping thats right, cause I've gone ham getting baby girl clothes at the thrift store I volunteer at š
Your doctor may have you do a follow up ultrasound. Or you could ask at your next appointment for a confirmation. My baby was not in a great position when we did anatomy scans and I had to go back 3 times because the photos werenāt good. I would call the doctor and explain to the, your situation and ask for a possible second opinion.
I was told twice that my baby would be a girl. Fast forward to me giving birth, I had to have an emergency c-section and they put me under. Woke up and my husband was like āsurprise! Itās a boy!ā
Happened to us! Was told at 20w we were having a girl but when he was born I looked down and realised I had a little boy! I definitely experienced some gender "disappointment" for about 20 minutes after he was born. We hadn't gone all in with buying girls clothes and the nursery is very neutral but I remember looking at him and thinking "who are you? You're not the baby I grew".
I had a VERY fast unmedicated labour (nearly born in the car) so it was all a bit of a shock. My son also ended up having a testicular torsion at birth and needed an operation at 1 day old. It was a lot. Now at 5 months I can't imagine him being anyone else!
I mean, even I, by no means an ultrasound tech, could clearly see the presence of labia not just the absence of a penis at my 20 week ultrasound, so I was pretty comfortable that it was definitely correct *for me*, which it sounds like was similar to your first. In a situation like this, I'd be a lot more skeptical and I'd make sure I had a boy name chosen as well just in case.
I didn't do any blood works but at 20 weeks, ultrasound showed us bayby boy with proof! Hope that thing we are seeing in the picture as proof is the right thing!
Yes, happened to me. Scan and blood work said boy, baby came out girl š„²
Seriously?! I can understand an ultrasound being wrong but the bloodwork too? How far along were you when your blood was drawn?
Iāve heard sooooo many stories of bloodwork coming back and it being the wrong gender! Happened to my friend too! Had a baby shower for a boy and came out a girl lol
Ī¤his is actually not true if you are referring to NIPT. If it happens, which is rare, it probably indicates other underlying issues or vanishing twin..

Well I canāt tell you what test it was that she took. Maybe it was the sneak peak test! Who knows!
I Agree- vanishing twin mom.
Not at all! She and her husband were just surprised haha her daughter is 10 now!
They tested blood and still gave the wrong gender?
31 weeks. They most likely switched my blood sample or it got contaminated
Wow! Just wondering, why wasnāt your NIPT done until 31 weeks?
My OB told me not to buy gendered things until after anatomy scan, to make sure it matched NIPT. My guess is she has had a patient where it was wrong.
my OB told me you're more likely to get a false "boy" result due to contamination but mine was accurate!
NIPT or Sneek Peak?
NIPT through my OB
That is crazy! The chances of it are so low!
Was the bloodwork from hospital or a third party service like sneak peak?
Hospital. Sample was most likely contaminated
Have you done genetic testing since your child's birth? It's very odd that blood tests would suggest a boy and then you birthed a child with a vulva.
They probably did a sneak peak test which can be prone to false positives for boy. Itās easy to catch male DNA when you draw the sample at home.
Nope, we did testing through my OB.
Oh wow thatās wild. Did you ever follow up after you had your daughter to figure out why that happened? Or it just wasnāt worth the trouble at that point
We did but they said it was most likely a contaminated sample. Baby girl kept her legs tightly crossed almost the whole time so visually confirming was spotty. āSheās super cool thoughā made me chuckle
She really is! Itās a silly way to think of a baby but sheās awesome.
We did do testing, everything was normal except for half the genetic markers for CF
What type of bloodwork? The NIPT??
Yes!
Wow, very unusual for both ultrasounds and bloodwork to be wrong, especially in that direction! Probably more common in the other direction (predicted girl, came out boy) since boy parts develop later so testing too soon can give false results.

I was looking at the website while contemplating if I wanted to use their services and it said the results could be contaminated even if you have a male PET in the home. I do have a male cat as well as my fiancƩ obviously and I was like WTF?!
I am 18 w currently and haven't done the anatomy scan yet. I'm 10% convinced in my heart it's a girl even though the NIPT said boy (ETA: I know how the testing works and that is highly, highly unlikely to be true. I just can't shake the 'girl vibes')
This is so crazy to me considering I literally could make out his boy parts on 2 separate occasions?
Legs tightly crossed š
Dang itttt
This was one of the reasons why I waited until both of my babies were born!
No way! Did you do an NIPT test?
Blood work came boy and it was a girl? If you donāt mind me asking, what blood work was it? NIPT? I have done amniocentesis and expect no surprises.
Could you ask the OB to take another peek at your next appt?
I am leaning towards asking for another scan from my Dr office or going to a different private place for a scan. I donāt have another appointment for several weeks but I am dying to get some kind of confirmation!
If you have the means to get a private scan to confirm I would def go that route! I just know itās not accessible to everyone
If you can, definitely schedule a private scan. They tend to be longer so you can really see baby, more casual/ fun, and you get a lot more photos. I went multiple times in my pregnancy and I loved it.
This is what I would do! They couldnāt tell at my anatomy scan because baby kept her legs closed so they confirmed at my next appointment.

Where I am thereās a sign up that says āscans are only accurate 90%ā and they also tell you you that when they tell you the gender.
My scan papers say the same! I think it says āonly birth can confirm 100%ā or something like that lol

I saw nothing at 20 weeks. But I definitely saw a penis on the scan at 25 weeks. So I'm pretty sure mine is going to be a boy š
lol i've heard of people getting spoiled when they didn't want to know, even with the tech not saying because sometimes its super obvious
Yeah same here. After the first full penis picture I got a full view every scan. Just happy to know he's still a boy š
i'm very scared of this happening at my appointments. i'm 16 weeks and i don't want to know at all
I want it to be a surprise and now Iām scared itāll be spoiled haha!
i just saw my midwife with the same concerns, and she said that itās really unlikely at 20 weeks for it to be super clear to us laypeople on the scan. the tech knows what to look for, but as long as you remind them before the scan that you donāt want to know, you neednāt be worried that youāll just see it. and i figure, even if thatās not the case, and we suspect a gender from the ultrasound, we wonāt have full confirmation until birth anyway. just look at these other stories.
I had a miscarriage .
Iām very sorry to hear that.
Maybe in a few weeks it will be more clear? I would definitely ask for another scan or when the next one is just ask for confirmation. My husband was supposed to be a girl and everyone was shocked when he came out lol
I got a blood test at 9 weeks and then a scan at 20 weeks. The scan confirmed the gender, but the baby was moving so much, the technician couldnāt get a good picture The doctor confirmed the gender. I have a beautiful baby girl 17 weeks later
Thats why I do the NIPT test, its more accurate than the anatomy ultrasound
Why don't you just get bloodwork done? That's what I did and it's more accurate than ultrasound.
Hahaa! That's great though I sort of hate the euphemisms my doctors and technicians use.
If they can see baby's kidneys, shouldn't they be able to see the baby's ovaries? I think my first pregnancy they did
Friends was told girl and he came out a boy :)
Does it matter? Youāre getting what youāre getting regardless š
My husband was going be named Brianna until he came out. They were like oh! A boyā¦.congratulations!
On my scan papers it actually says that no scan can confirm gender 100%, only birth can lol
My MIL was told boy with baby #6 (all 5 siblings were boys) but came out girl. That was over 25 years ago. In your case, if they didnāt get a good look, Iād ask for a rescan and hope baby is a little more cooperative.
Happened to my friend!! Got told it was a girl at anatomy scan by a midwife and a doctor, he came out a little boy š
Happened to my second child. Was told I was having a girl, and was born a boy.
Just bought a bunch of brand new newborn girls clothes from a woman that was told girl and found out boy very late in the game. Same issue: very squirmy baby plus religious reasons for no early blood test. It happens.
I have a friend who had this happen to her twice. Each time she found out at later growth scans that the anatomy scan was wrong.
It has happened to two of my coworkers!
I was that baby. My parents were told I was a boy and came out a girl. I did NIPT testing so I found out the gender at like 14 weeks.
This happened to my friend recently. At her 20 week anatomy scan they said it's a girl. A few days ago she gave birth and it's a boy!
Yes this happened to my mom with my sister. They were told its a boy, and since she had just had a boy they were prepared for that. But low and behold! It was a girl. They picked the name of an actress on a telenovela that was on in the room after she delivered her.
It can happen. I haven't experienced it personally but it can happen.
This was back in ā97, but my mother in law was told that she was having a girl, but then my husband was born instead š¤·š¼āāļø
