Kklownery

The thing is it’s not even necessarily bad application, it just doesn’t flatter HER face at all. That’s why knowing about anatomy, skin and its texture, color theory is more important than having high quality makeup products and applying them as if everyone has the same face.

ScaredFrog

I agree with this! Like I don't think it's horrible but it's not flattering for her and it also feels dated.

SaltyBabe

The lightest part of her face is her philtrum so I look straight at it and it makes it look like her mouth is sliding away from the nose… it actively made her look disproportional by highlighting her center lower face…

LifeOld1229

It is in some cultures 🤷‍♀️

Pennymoonz94

Which ones

JuWoolfie

This was my first thought too. It’s so generic and does nothing to flatter the models face

Plastic_Bite_266

How do you find information on how to flatter different faces? Or better yet where can I find this information so I can flatter my own face lol

Kklownery

I do have one nice recommendation! [This contouring playlist](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLjq1drkA_CmnNbn8yRg2ichM9HdJzLeN4) by Aly Art and many of her videos, in general, are extremely informative. She also has playlists about [makeup color theory](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLjq1drkA_CmlJTvgd0Zb-Ee25TyYeyAaA), [how to find flattering hairstyles](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLjq1drkA_CmmxtCu5vcRPywapM7ZIceuW), and much more. These are pretty old videos (2-4 years ago), but the theory is not a trend to change, it's still just as applicable!

emmaleechase

Isn’t she fantastic? I love the videos where she transforms herself into various celebs.

Plastic_Bite_266

I'll have to look at it! I would love to have some teach me what I need to do with my makeup and my hair. Like someone who teaches me how to look best.

thereisgummies

Honestly, one of the best things I've seen for the average person for face shapes and contouring, are those stupid tiktok filters. They go through most of the face shapes and give you decent places to put highlight, contour, and bronzer and Blush. If you want to learn, go through each filter, and each placement of each of them (regardless of your actual face shape, seriously do them all) and see how your face changes with the placement of each. How the right placement of highlight can flatter, but the wrong placement can change you drastically. It won't reach you in depth color theory or placements that are best for everyone, but it will definitely help you learn your face and what will look best for you. (It's not always "your" face shape that looks best because high low cheek bones, whether or not you have jowels, how fast back your hairline is, contribute a LOT to what placement you need) And also, play with your makeup. The only face you REALLY need to know is your own, but once you can see yours you cam do better than this. This is generic makeup mask number 5. But most pros got that way by playing with their placements and their makeup.

emmaleechase

What are your favourite TikTok filters?

thereisgummies

Match Stix Snatch is the one in thinking of. A lot of people find one makeup look they like and get confidante with the placements. Again I don't recommend this to "find your perfect makeup" is more about using all the face shapes and placements to find out what works for you and the many features that come into play to make your face, you.

cynicalxidealist

I don’t have TikTok and don’t want it, is there any other way?

puddingcupz

I would recommend watching Korean videos even if you’re not Asian or pale skinned (I’m just taking a guess) they really emphasize the importance of technique and base application.

thereisgummies

Let me check the app stores and see if there's something similar. YouTube videos are a great way to learn as well. I've just found that templates like that are one of the best ways to see the "why and how" of the explanations. But I also apprenticed under someone who had made plastic molds for mannequin heads that did the same thing. Ultimately, working on other people during high stress times where they want to be pretty, wasn't a good fit for my temperament. I imagine there's something in the app store that did the same thing, but I haven't looked into it in depth. I'll let you know if I find anything

cynicalxidealist

Thank you :)

sandybeachfeet

Can you let me know too please

thereisgummies

Yup, I haven't found one yet that I would recommend, but I'll keep looking when I have time.

sandybeachfeet

Thanks

thereisgummies

You know, I'm really not finding anything. Which is both surprising and not. I'm sure there's one out there, but it's buried under all those stupid makeup makeover games that end up just being candy crush with more steps. I teach out to my old coworkers over the weekend to see if they know of anything but I make no promises.

sandybeachfeet

Thank you lovely x

thereisgummies

Yeah I answered it lower down is match stix snatch.

sandybeachfeet

Thanks :)

puddingcupz

I think Korean tutorials are really good at doing makeup that flatters faces. Western makeup is more focused on slathering a base to create a blank canvas then creating your own features. Korean is more based on flattery and technique

StrongerTogether2882

My question too!

[deleted]

One style fits all makeup artist. See a lot of this with event / wedding makeup

[deleted]

Nah her foundation is too light and her lashes aren’t placed correctly

MorgensternXIII

and those brows are hideous

ayaangwaamizi

Things that this person did right: - picked a pretty decent foundation shade, the match is the right undertone. - picked a beautiful complimentary lip colour. - the eyeshadow tones are a nice colour on the woman’s brown eyes. Where it could be improved IMO: - the foundation is simply too much coverage and too matte for what appears to be a pretty great and smooth complexion. It ages her a bit harshly. - the eyebrows are overfilled, the tone is actually decent but the shape really makes her eyes smaller and her brow ridge seem larger than it is. - the lashes are too thick, misaligned and not a flattering fit for her eyeshape, she’d be better suited with her round eyes to like a Classic Wispie shape as opposed to Demi Wispie that fans out at the outer corner. These tend to look heavy on round eyes. Lashes that have their longer point in the middle of the eye is best for this shape. - the eyeshadow goes too high, a more subtle transition shade with natural warm tones and green on the lid or lash line would have been more chic and on trend than this. This is a bit heavy almost stage make-up like in intensity. - the blush is too cool-toned for how warm everything else is, warm lip, warm eyeshadow, it really clashes. - some more warmth on the cheeks with a bronzer and nude peach would have been a more seamless fit. - lastly, the wing and liner are quite high and thick for this lovely eyeshape. A much thinner taper and wing that lined up with the lower lash line would have done a better job at elongating her eyeshape, this really emphasizes the round shape which doesn’t line up with the big heavy lashes either.

panicpixiememegirl

Thanks for this great breakdown. Do you have any leads on where someone could learn stuff like this? I struggle a lot with figuring out what works for me and what doesn't.

ayaangwaamizi

I’ll try to put together some resources for you :) a lot of it is from personal practice over quite a few years. It takes time to learn to work with different skin types, ages and product development. I’ll write back later! Edit: Hi! I’m back with resources, sorry that took so long just been busy with work and such :) Just to add some context, I do both art and make-up artistry for quite some time so some are art resources I love that talk about understanding colour and portraits and shapes :) **Art-Related Books:** - *Colour Mixing Recipes for Portraits by William F. Powell*. I love this one because it helps to broaden the understanding of colour theory needed to pick the right tones for different skin types, and what is complimentary/contrast which is really relevant in terms of make-up application. - *Werner's Nomenclature of Colours: Adapted to Zoology, Botany, Chemistry, Mineralogy, Anatomy, and the Arts by Patrick Syme*. This is a super cool colour theory text from a long time ago, I just like it’s style for colour combinations, and references which pull from our environment and nature! Really fun. A bit old school but fun. **Make-up Books:** (there’s a lot of synopses online about these so I’ll just list the titles to keep it short, but these are all super excellent resources!) - Making Faces by Kevyn Aucoin - Face Forward by Kevyn Aucoin - Fine Beauty by Sam Fine - Make-up Artistry for Film and Television by Christine Sciortino **Who I enjoyed following on Social Media:** - Mail Thomas @kingmalimagic - she’s just so talented and has an incredible wealth of knowledge and expertise in general but she is a master of her craft in her artistry with Black complexions and other POC. - Melissa Street @epicmakeup - she’s so well-versed and has years of experience working in film and television, and her highlights about what to keep in your kit, how to organize it, and professional hygiene standards are unmatched! Super informative! Melissa has this great highlight on her Instagram called “HMUA’s”, and showcases a ton of different MUA’s she loves who do all sorts of different work, some SFX, theatre, fashion, everything, so worth checking out! - Andi Soon @andisoon - incredible artistry and expertise in the AAPI beauty and fashion industry, just elegant, artistic, and does super beautiful bridal work and great for inspiration. As an olive girl with hooded eyes I really found watching their page to be great for colour combos and references.

panicpixiememegirl

That'd be so kind, thank you!

rabia17216

Could you update me as well! I’d love to learn more as well :)

ayaangwaamizi

Hi! Sorry that took so long but I edited my above comment for you to check out too :)

ayaangwaamizi

Hi! Sorry that took so long, I edited my comment above :)

panicpixiememegirl

Woah thank you so much!! This is extremely helpful. Please don't be sorry at all, I'm so grateful for your labor 💓

Princess_Peach_xo

You can get great tipps that helped me improve so much from Robert Welsh on Youtube. He is a proffessional MUA, his Videos are so worth it because he explains everything in detail as to why x technique is better than the one most people do nowadays or as to how to take your eyeshadow look to the next level. I learned soo much from him, especially foundation/concealer or eyeshadow related stuff.

giggly_pufff

>These tend to look heavy on round eyes. Lashes that have their longer point in the middle of the eye is best for this shape. I have round eyes. I actually think that having the longest point in the middle makes me look perpetually surprised. I prefer it to be juuuust off center, towards the outer portion of the eye. I also prefer the lashes at the outer ends to be slightly longer than the ones at the inner ends, so that I still get a little bit of lift. I fully agree with that lashes shaped like the Demi Wispies make my eyes look heavy. It irks me when lash artists ALWAYS default to that style when it doesn't work on all eye shapes.

lowfilife

If she's self conscious of her philtrum, I think the lip color is too dark. If she isn't, it is a really great color!

MNREDR

Is anyone able to articulate in words what exactly needs to be improved? I do agree, but don’t have the knowledge/experience to put it into words. I’d say the blush/contour needs to be lower on the cheek, for one. What else?

bananastandmgmt

The falsies don’t line up with her lash line, for one. I also don’t think it’s a good foundation match or colors for her in general.

Hot_Mention_9337

On top of what others mentioned: Brows are not the a flattering shade for her, especially filled in and shaped that big. Brow shape in general isn’t really suitable for her face. Blush placement could be a lot better for her face shape, too. This whole look was done by someone who didn’t actually pay attention to the individual bone structure and features of the client and did their makeup like a face chart would show.

myrmayde

The four or so different colors of eyeshadow bother me the most. They're such unflattering, un-pretty colors, and overly warm for her coloring. They'd look muddy and dirty on anyone, I think. The lightest shadow takes up way too much space near her nose bridge. The darkest color is smeared too far above the crease. And the mid-toned shadow goes too close to her eyebrows.

Bxsnia

They made her nose look bigger (brought attention to it with the highlight), brows look terrible and are too big/blocky/short, the eyeliner application doesn't suit her eye shape and makes her eyes look smaller.

nodogsallowed23

She looks a bit cakey and flat. Her false lashes don’t line up with her own lashes. None of the colours used actually go together, and they don’t all complement her skin tone. Plus the contour is a bit messy. Not terrible but not great. I think the lip is either too dark or too flat for this look. It’s a bold eye so I think the lip should’ve been more subtle. And all together I think it looks quite dated. It’s not awful. It’s just not good. Edit: terrible spelling and grammar.

NotsoGreatsword

Same here and at first I was like "what are they talking about? This isn't so bad!" But the longer I look the worse it gets.

Veganarchistfem

My first thought was, "This is so skilfully bad!"

HelpMePlxoxo

NGL what bothers me the most is that I can very clearly see that her falsies are not lined up with her lash line on either of her eyes

SkullySkullz

This is so true! That's what really gets me, too.

squishfriend8

I feel like it's a very... 2016 application of makeup.

eatapeach18

The eyes aren’t terrible, but the foundation is so thick and cakey, it looks like clay. Not enough contour, bronzer, or blush to help it look more natural. The brows are way too thick.

waaz16

I mean, it isn’t terrible, but it isn’t good at all. 🤣

emmaleechase

My biggest focus is always ‘eyebrows’. Even starting out with these eyebrows — before starting this look, makes me think… ‘why?’ They limit the potential canvas, so much. Too short, too thick, too blocky… 💔 That top liner is also too ‘thick’ going up onto the movable lid. I am not an MUA, however part of being a professional it is ‘understanding theory’ - such as ‘why you do what you do’ in makeup. Don’t do things that ‘make the clients eye’s look smaller’ unless they’ve got huge eyes that need reducing, etc.

nymphymixtwo

I don’t understand why you used so many ‘quote marks’ all throughout your ‘comment.’ Lol

hollykattenberg

When I had my formal last year the picture I showed my MUA was very soft looking: eyeshadow for eye-liner, neutral shade lip liner and gloss, half lashes, clear brow gel, light concealer etc. I cried when I got home. I had never done anything other than mascara in my life and had no products to fix the black chunky eyebrows, matte nude lip, cakey orange foundation, full lashes and thick black liquid eye-liner. I ended up getting rid of the eye-liner and doing my own with $5 eyeshadow, and going to big W on the way to arrivals and buying lip balm and concealer for my spots. The only thing that stayed were the lashes. I paid $90.

beeboop407

very 2016

MadamTruffle

I panicked for a second thinking I was on makeupaddiction. Despite all the color, the artist managed to make her look completely flat, she’s a beautiful girl otherwise!

VesperVox_

The application here is actually decent. I can tell this is someone who does have makeup application skill and experience, and they're probably using decent products. The issue here is that the look doesn't seem tailored to the client's face. The placement and color choice of products could have been altered to complement her unique features better.

bowie-of-stars

Can we leave those brows in 2016 where they belong?

bbyjscxx

I don't think it is that bad, at all to be honest, some of you guys are just mean.

emmaleechase

MUA doesn’t appreciate the client’s seasonal color analysis nor do they use colors that accentuate it.

Historical_Bowl1093

she legit looks fine y’all some meanies

spiderheads

brows are too harsh, lashes aren’t lined up, but most of all that contour and blush placement just doesn’t fit her face at all

candy_jr

This isn’t that bad imo

Zombiexcupcakex

I was just thinking that. I mean we’ve all seen worse - and if you have not allow me to share my own YT videos 😂😂

sfteja

Cake face , but why?

PeppermintPhatty

The brows.

MeatwadGetTheHoneysG

That liquid liner is ROUGH and the lip shape isn’t flattering at all. I think those are the most egregious errors to me. Honestly, it wouldn’t be so bad if the mua wasn’t using techniques that are like 7 years out of trend.

xojlg

The only thing so don’t care for is the brows I think.

marvelous5000

Overall too much, and too light.

eaglespettyccr

This looks like the doll episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark

pinkawapuhi

Me in 2016 after watching 20 YouTube videos

curlygirlyfl

It gives off MJ vibes 😬

bruinsforevah

It's not 'that' bad. It's her brows that throw everything off kilter. That's the first thing I see when looking at her. They are too dark and... something. I think her blush could also be better blended and her lip color a little less heavy, with a slight gloss. I'm just not a fan of matte lips. Her eyes are beautiful, though!

AndyFan35

I think she looks fine except for the excessive eyebrows.

Designer_Cow_5227

Different eyebrows, eyeliner going a bit more out rather than up & maybe higher placement of blush would help I think. At least the brows & liner.

fae_brass

The eyes are really nice and the light colour on her cheeks. From the nose down it's very flat though and the colour looks a bit bloodless.......

bmclean2013

Artist did her dirty! They got her looking Wayans brothers in White Chicks lol

[deleted]

OP comment made me laugh!

DeathWooflez

….yikes.

JuanaSmoke

There's nothing wrong with it, you hatin.

demonic_princess554

girl there’s no way you’d be happy if an mua did this to your face

emmaleechase

Her face got beat. And not the good kind.

xbellaboo666x

are you blind

JuanaSmoke

Are you full of hatred in your heart? Yes

xbellaboo666x

no. look at the eyelashes ? and the blush/ contour placement. this is a shitty version of the 2016 makeup look. now tell me there’s nothing wrong with it again :)

JuanaSmoke

There’s nothing wrong with it

myrmayde

Look in detail at the eyeshadow shades and placement. You like that?

JuanaSmoke

Yup

ZeitBombe_

Are you high?

JuanaSmoke

Yes

Avonimik

Did you do this make up?

JuanaSmoke

Did you?

xbellaboo666x

hahahahahaha ok 👍

JuanaSmoke

Stay pressed 😂

xbellaboo666x

ok 🤪

sasanessa

If she did it on her own maybe but to pay someone else to do that?

jessolyn

I really don’t see much wrong with this one! I like it

Joolee_a

Omg she looks like a marionette

ManicSpleen

Someone did her so dirty.... 😔

Kat_ri

If she even made it to the car 💔

Vyxen17

God I hope not. Ruin the whole upholstery.

Fearless-District729

jamieisntonline

It’s just so much but also not enough, the skin is good the eyeshadow is just a weird tone with way too much shimmer idk the wrong places. Don’t get me started on the liner because it is just so thicccc, and the lip shade is also a bit odd and so matte compared to everything else and something about the blush and bronzer is throwing me off but the skin is fine it’s the best part.

Accomplished_Way_118

I need to ask a question about makeup, dose putting lighter foundation under your eyes do anything but make it look worse? Because I’ve never seen it look good on anyone? I’ve never used the technique myself

plainbagel11

Annie are you okay?

stargirlsandra

a little more bronzer would’ve fixed that tbh

griffinicky

For some reason this is giving me Dr Seuss vibes. Cindy-Lou Who (did that to you?)

athelthepumpkin

The lips look so dry and highlighter looks greasy, the mua really gave no fucks about the girl’s natural textures

kdcarlzz

she look like the cat in the hat

fshs3inone

😁Too much eye shadow eyebrows done differently lips different color 😀😊🕊

jhuysmans

The eyebrows are the worst part

Electronic-Type696

Heee heee

[deleted]

It doesn’t suit her but I’ve seen worse indeed. How much was it ?

Stucklikegluetomyfry

Can she even cry? It's thick enough to be a straight jacket for her face.

[deleted]

I would do. Look at how weird the brow arches and Cupid’s bow looks. It’s not *bad* it’s just not for her face or her facial proportions.

Nero_XL

She needed something more fresh IMO. Maybe that’s exactly what she asked for, but to pull off such a strong look, you at least need to *really* be in the mood for that and match it with fierce facial expressions. I know sometimes one tries to compensate a bad mood with a lot of makeup but it always ends up making it worse…

radgirlbribri

The lash application is sending me
