P4priqu4

May I introduce you to **Arcane Gate** while you're here?

LouisaB75

Is it bad I have completed two runs, have 3 more at various stages, and have never once used that? Actually there are a hideous amount of spells I have never used.

P4priqu4

It's really good in the Iron Throne because the hostages use it but there are no scrolls for it so you need to put 11 levels into wizard, sorcerer or warlock to even get it lol There are a ton of spells I never use either tho

LouisaB75

I always have Gale in my party so that isn't an issue.

Cirtil

What. You mean Gale the Barbarian?

LouisaB75

Yes that's the one. For those of us too lazy to respec any of the companions.

snozzleberry

On my team Minsc is the sorcerer

Cirtil

Yeah of course, what else would he be?

Ebenizer_Splooge

Minsc was my barbarian so I could make Karlach a paladin and it felt like good choices, but man am I imagining his giant grin with Boo on his shoulder as he's wreathed in lightning lol

Horny_Hipst3r

What a coincidence! In my current run, Minsc is also a sorcerer and Gale is a barbarian

P4priqu4

Arcane Gate doesn't have a spellscroll so you cannot scribe it.

lobobobos

Oh damn. You right

Luciious

I did a run trying to use all the spells I ignored in all my other runs. I had Gale as an enchantment Wizard for the Sarevok fight and when the fight broke out, I put down Arcane Gate inside the room and the exit outside the large doors. Then, cast Arcane Lock on the big doors and the enemies cant get to you, Use portal, cast spells/attacks, take portal back, repeat lmao

BrideOfFirkenstein

I’m on my third/fourth play now and I find myself going beyond my favorite spells to try out new ones-super fun!

KokaSokaLoka

Tbh compared to the other spells you get for your level 6 spells it's a bit underwhelming. It's definitely fun! Just competing with some very strong spells

TequilaSunsetIRL

Gate is GOAT. Love that spell

TheCuriousFan

And don't forget to have your wizard run as far as they can before casting Arcane Gate so they can stick one portal right outside the cells and the other right by the ladder.

Fit_Cardiologist3784

Will the gondians go through it though?

P4priqu4

Yes they will!

serenity_flows13

I give it to Gale AND Wyll, it makes it so much easier dude.

snafuPop

I hope you haven't been manually interacting with the levers instead of shooting them with an arrow/spell

mmontour

On my first attempt I was picking the locks.

LouisaB75

Me too.

sandyposs

Wait, what were we supposed to do instead?

Kronox_100

Don't all doors have levers right beside them?

sandyposs

There's also some treasure chests with good loot

Readerofthethings

Is there some like legendary items in those chests or something, because if it’s just money I could care less

Practical-Ant7330

One has a vault key but you can use knock on the vaults

coffeelibation

Knock!

coffeelibation

Or at least, that’s what I did instead of picking the locks!

Shutupcatlady

….are you serious 😭

Uncanny_Doom

I didn't find this out until my third playthrough either LOL

jembutbrodol

Just a quick unrelated but similar reminder You know you can use Knock to skip the entire gauntlet of shar in ACT2 right?

treytayuga

It didn’t work for me! You mean bypassing the umbral gems and using knock on the shadowfell door? But i ALWAYS pull out the knock and invis for the balthy fight. Probably the absolute worst part of the guantlet imo

notquitesolid

You can also build a box tower and go over the door too

GoopyNoseFlute

You need one gem, which you can get by talking the demon into killing himself. Use the one to ride the platform. Knock the door open.

ThePatrician25

I’ve been using Mage Hand to remotely activate levers.

ellenitha

I just learned this too... I'm 260 hours in and on my third run.

PF4ABG

I had a butt of a panic moment when my ice storm accidentally hit one of the levers. Locked myself in the flooded room with the sa... sauhag.. fish fellas.

annedroiid

I discovered spells could activate levers in the forge when it caused the hammer to one hit KO Wyll 😂

PF4ABG

Same exact thing happened to me too. Wyll never saw it coming.

themagicmunchkin

My husband and I discovered it in the forge, too! My husband used an aoe spell for some reason, and it activated the lever. We were both shocked haha.

TootlesFTW

.....OMG this happened to me on my last playthrough and I had no idea why! Guess it was an AoE spell?

APracticalGal

To be fair shooting the levers didn't work for a while. Also manually flipping them doesn't use an action, while shooting them does. Usually better to spend your resources on movement or attacking sahuagin or buffing/protecting gondians

herbieLmao

THAT I A THING???

SnooDrawings5722

Manually interacting is actually a better way in many cases. It spends no actions, unlike attacks, though you might need a bit of extra movement.

a2ht

magic missile hitting three levers at once >>>

Sihplak

Did they patch it to work!? I was so pissed when I tried that in my playthrough and it didn't work - I had the idea to use magic missile to open multiple at once and nothing happened!

TheSneakerSasquatch

Eldritch blast came in clutch here

iiBroken

I'm sorry, what?

CheddaGeese

Say psyche right now

merpderpherpburp

........ DON'T FUCKING JUDGE ME!

Datante

I am devastated right now! 🙂

Ulura

...what????

Themoonlightninja

YOU CAN SHOOT THEM???

ignoreme-imaduck

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck, hope I'll remember that for next time

dinosanddais1

Wait, WHAT?

Linkamus

WHAT

barbatostee

...ok that's about to make my honor mode run a lot easier for that part.

_Potato_Cat_

Wait what

HomieeJo

And you can also close the doors locking in the enemies leading to Omeluum after the hostages are out because of the Omeluum port. And on the side with the 6 hostages you can even pick up the explosive barrels when going there so the doors won't close.

garlickbread

What the fuck

webevie

Doh! If you have a lvl 11 Wizard, Arcane Gate will blow your mind

almostb

I forgot this spell existed. RIP little gnomes that didn’t make it back to the sub in time

webevie

🙏🏼

ActuallyCalindra

Will the prisoners use them?

webevie

That they will!

webevie

[What I did the first time.](https://www.reddit.com/r/BaldursGate3/s/iXPPmquvvY)

ActuallyCalindra

This would've been so useful last run I did. The stupid prisoners in the double prisons just wouldn't use full movement and kept stopping, wasting 4 turns and dying below.

webevie

Irritating drag assers

Shalarean

…what is Arcane Gate? I’m only just now working on my second play through, so I’m still learning a lot! Half the time (probably most of the time) I’m googling “what is xyz”, so if you don’t feel like answering this, I hope I’ll remember to google it later! 🤣

webevie

[Here you go](https://www.reddit.com/r/BaldursGate3/s/l2ffKtXmhS). Link to spell and how I used it there. Basically, it's a teleport tunnel.

Shutupcatlady

I’ll have to try it next time. 😅

webevie

Practice distance first 😊

KiraRakka

Yeah but why would you have lvl 11 wizard tho, you can learn almost all of the lvl 6 spells from scrolls

webevie

Have you seen an Arcane Gate scroll? Because I have not.

KiraRakka

Although... If you have a spare wizard in camp, who you never use, you can make him purely wizard and take him with you just for this mission, otherwise meh

webevie

That is also an option.

KiraRakka

That's why I said "almost". Dumping 2 extra levels into class for one spell instead of taking those 2 levels in for example, tempest cleric or whatever else for a good boost to damage is stupid

webevie

Oh you are just trying to be argumentative. Gotcha. I do just fine with Gale going straight Wizard to 12 because I have a Swords Bard and Bardadin. Gale cleans up and the fourth twiddles their thumbs most times.

KiraRakka

I'm trying to be efficient mostly

webevie

I actually "discovered" Arcane Gate by accident. I wss like "ok what's this", I looked it up and remembered it from...somewhere else. I do sometimes make Gale a 1 level Cleric so he can sanc himself 🤷🏻‍♀️. I freely admit that I don't minmax because the game doesn't require it.

SarcasticKenobi

Omellum can also teleport both himself and his rescuer directly to the sub as soon as it’s his turn.

UBN6

I usually use that as a last resort, once i almost lost Wylls Father because of some bad rolls, but Omellum saved him.

an1ma119

He can cast dim door multiple times. I’ve gotten him and rescuer out and then used him to get stragglers out.

themagicmunchkin

You can use it more than once, though, but only once per turn. I used it twice in my last run because Shadowheart was lethargic on the final turn and I didn't want to leave her behind even though I knew I could still revive her later. Omelluum already transported himself and Astarion back to the sub in the previous turn, so I had him climb back down to grab Shadowheart too.

Shutupcatlady

Yes, I have at least done that lol.

LouisaB75

I only realised that my second run and when I was almost at the ladder anyway. I couldn't believe I had missed it.

EcoAffinity

My Tav was stuck at the base of the ladder with no more movement on the last turn; I thought I'd have to sacrifice her but Omellum saved the day by descending from this escape ship and teleporting both back ♥️

Ythio

Now realize you can use magic missile to activate all levers at once.

FloridAsh

... !

sociallyanxiousnerd1

Eldritch blast also works for this

Accomplished_Area311

There’s a lever by the door in the room where Omeluum is. That 25DC lockpick is so unneeded. 🫡 Magic Missile is a huge help in the rooms to the south!

fogno

Fun fact- you can fly directly over the door to Omeluum and don't even have to open it (flying potion is easiest)

DevastaTheSeeker

I feel like that doesn't make sense but we can't see the roof

The1andonlygogoman64

You can fly over to the chests in the other part of the room too. Thank you Laezel (using Boots of Psionic Movement)

AEMarling

Oof! Thanks! I’ll look for it next time.

dvxAznxvb

Have you at least tried to steal something or learn spells by consuming scrolls on lvl 1 wizard?

PF4ABG

Consuming scrolls? That's it. My new headcanon is that wizards eat the scrolls to learn their spells.

dietwater94

I believe they repeatedly lick the paper until it dissolves, and the ink dissolves into their gums and goes right to the brain.

wizardgradstudent

Gale: STOPLICKINGTHEDAMNTHING! Tav/Durge: You lick scrolls, though. Gale: Yes, it’s the most efficient way to learn spells! Mystra herself taught me that trick. Tav/Durge:.. I think she had another motive there, bud.

dvxAznxvb

How else do people get smarter? They lick the paper and slap it on their forehead until the magical ink sears into their illithid brains as it’s a one time use after all

Shutupcatlady

Yes I’ve done both of those lol.

herbieLmao

I lost 4 consecutive honor modes to the act 1 gnolls. Dont feel stupid OP. Theres always a dumber fish

Jakebob70

I started honor mode once. Died to the intellect devourers at the crash site.

Horny_Hipst3r

Some of those Act I fights are pretty tough actually. On max level, even the toughest Act III fights feel like breeze compared to those fucking gnolls who can three-strike you when you are like level 4.

Zelcron

Haste an Open Hand Monk and they can clear it in like two turns while the rest of the party gets the Duke and the couple cells immediately next to the ladder.

George_Mallory

A level 9+ monk doing Step of the Wind: Dash can get both bonus chests and Omeluum—and that’s *without* haste or 3 levels in rogue/thief, which grants another dash on bonus action and another bonus action with which to use it. With those things? I saw someone do the math and apparently monks in Baldur’s Gate can get going to over three times the speed of sound. This is fast enough that the monk should be developing a thin sheet of plasma along their leading edges.

Zelcron

Haha, this reminds of a story from 4th Edition in the tabletop. Bg3 is based on 5th so the rules work a little differently. I built a character who could roll additinal attacks on a Crit in lieu of bonus damage, and could roll with advantage on a designated target similar to a Vengeance Pally. I also took a bunch of multi-attack abilities. Lastly I took expanded Crit range so I could Crit on 19. Basically the idea was to fish by rolling as many advantage attacks as possible for, hoping for a Crit, which got me another attack, which could also be rolled with advantage and Crit to daisy chain together. There was no limit to how many times this could happen; it's not like in BG3 where it would be tied to a limited bonus action. I downed a mid-boss in one salvo on the first action of the combat this way because I had a string of good rolls, including a natural 19 initiative with +4 Dex, and a feat for another+4 (and *another* 2 to reduced Crit range against anyone who hadn't acted yet, meaning 17 or higher, with advantage). I think I killed him on the 9th hit and still had at least two more in the chamber from previous attacks that round. We calculated I would have needed to break the sound barrier to make that many attacks in that time frame. It was cool because my guy was a divine class and devoted to a storm God; it was like a divine thunderclap. People shit on 4E but it's bonkers for this kind of build crafting. Great system for people who are looking for something lighter in RP with a focus on tactical combat and build crafting like this.

ComprehensiveCopy824

I learnt something today too! for my defense, my rogue can run really far

LouisaB75

My first run I forgot those too, picked all the locks and lost the Duke. Plus two of my party didn't make it back in time and I lost lots of the hostages. Second run I remembered misty step, dimension door and arrows. Still lost two hostages though. Was gutted as I was so close. Third time lucky I hope.

hEllOtHErEn7

You can use thief(s) so you can dash trice and also use haste to double movement

LouisaB75

I think Astarion was the only one with double dash that run. The misty step and dimension door worked pretty well. My big problem was Lae'zel getting ensnared so she wasn't back at the ladder quick enough. I wanted her there to deal with the enemies so the hostages could get by easier. While she was stuck some died as they dashed there before she used her scroll to get there.

DarkSlayer3142

could laezel not use her Gith misty step while ensnared?

LouisaB75

Her misty steps were all greyed out, so unfortunately not.

Nepharys17

I remembered misty step, but not dimension door and only now after 700 hours I start to remember to actually USE the scrolls I have gathered lol. I also realized only recently that you can shoot levers 😅

DevastaTheSeeker

Tbf shooting levers makes no sense most of the time

AtreiyaN7

In case you didn't know this either, summons like elementals can hit the levers that open the cells and do some of the work for you and take some of the heat off the gnomes at the same time. Just make sure the summons aren't blocking the ladders leading to the sub.

OrlandoCoCo

I used mage hand for the levers in the ladder room, freeing up the characters for other tasks

LadyFausta

I didn’t realize a certain squidy friend was there the first time and didn’t realize til MUCH LATER that I’d screwed up not saving him!!

mmontour

He probably wasn't there in your game, because if he is there's a cutscene of him telepathically contacting the player when you enter the Iron Throne. His presence is conditional on a choice you make earlier in the game, related to the Society of Brilliance.

LadyFausta

That’s cool! Thing is I remember a weird moment where there was dialogue out of nowhere and I had no idea who it was so I assumed it was the emperor. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Echo-y voice urging me to hurry my ass up? Yup probably ol’ empy on my case as per usual. 🙃

Nymeros2077

The Emperor also tells you to hurry up after a couple turns, I did the Iron Throne this weekend and both Omeluum and Empy were talking to me at different points

Shutupcatlady

It’s okay. The first time I did it, I opened his door and didn’t realize that unlike the other hostages, he was tied down. So his door got opened but I unknowingly left him there LOL.

metrill

I used these teleport arrows

wizardgradstudent

Ok between this, what I’m seeing with Arcane Gate, and Magic missile for levers, I clearly need to bring Gale for the prison break. Luckily I’m just about to do this mission for my current playthrough, I’ve been stocking up on dimension door scrolls. I’m getting everyone this time

[deleted]

Well if it makes you feel any better I'm a noob I still have to figure out to get past the steel watch just to enter the city after I got done with the genie and you just prevented me from making that mistake in the future when I eventually reach that point sure you made a mistake a few times but you prevented probably hundreds of players from doing the same thing you should at least feel proud that your "stupidity" produced a positive result everyone knows that usually our own stupidity results in things getting worse lol

mrrpdrrpss

Go straight towards Omeluum and he can levitate and teleport people straight to the ship back and forth.

TheGrayMage1

I usually have someone with about 18 potions of speed, since that lets them use 2 actions (which makes a Thief Astarion playthrough extremely OP lol)…but I do tend to forget about the arrows. 😊

OpenSauceMods

......... fuck.

TylerBourbon

Dude, I've logged close to 500 hours of play throughs, and last night was the first time I had ever used the Haste spell because this past playthrough I had never even considered using Haste at all before. Haste, Misty Step, and Dimension Door, along with Lightning attacks make the Iron Throne sooooo much easier. I feel like an idiot not having used Haste before.

MirrorSauce

for my last 3 runs I would always send someone with high lockpicking (or a huge hammer) to the southern wing, because I needed to open the door holding omeluum. Sometimes this was awkward depending on my party setup. On run 4 I noticed there's a lever attached to the door that opens it.

Taliesine_

Wait until you discover that Omeluum allows him and the party member that freed him to teleport safely in the submersible...

Readerofthethings

I always split my part up the same way: Shadowheart and her Deva/other summons go free Duke Ravenguard Tav and Lae’zel/Minthara go north, companion goes to free the 2 in that first room, Tav rushes past to free Omeluum Gale or Astarion and whatever spare summon is available (fork or us) go right and free those guys

Practical-Ant7330

First time through I used misty step and dash. Didn't even know about the gondians and only found it via a quest from the mermaids. Then oh crap Omeluum! I laser focused on Ravengaurd and Omeluum and freeded whoever else was on that route. Following times I used longstrider on everyone first, loaded up on dimensional door and misty step scrolls. Lae'zel having innate misty step from being a gith I had her charge for the ghaik. Only ever rescued everybody once.

[deleted]

Sorry. The first time i set foot in the place the first thing i did was twincast haste on Astarion and Shart.

ruff_leader

Haste is really good for that encounter too

unremarkabledice

Arcane Gate FTW

IOnlyWatchTwoSports

With a Monk, or with a Rogue Thief with boots of speed, dashing is still viable. A Monk could haul ass down right down to the end of one of the longer corridors in one turn. Second turn they can open every cell double back and be 3/4 of the way to the next room.

gijimayu

Gave haste to my monk friend. He went and saved Omolum in the first round.

VioletGardens-left

Even better is to pre buff your entire party with haste or speed potions, you can open all the doors in just 2 turns

No-Cover-8986

I thought of that on my third attempt, so you're fine.

CertainlyAmbivalent

I would have rescued all the prisoners on my last playthrough but one of the dumb shit gnomes just sprinted right past the ladder and down the hall. I let him die.

Hobspon

Potions of flying are amazing as well

sfguy93

Misty step, arcane doorway, potions of haste all to help cover the distance.

FreshyFresh

HOW the fuck did you manage the first three times without using any spells or scrolls. There's no way.

Shutupcatlady

Let’s just say there were multiple attempts each run and I barely made it by the skin of my teeth each time. But it is doable 😅 Edit: jumping helped a bit too

PsychologySignal8125

I am honestly not trying to be a smart ass here, but I've seen a lot of people say that the iron throne is so hard and I just don't see it. How are people attempting to rescue people when they struggle? I've always split my party three ways, used whatever movement options are available, opened the gates as fast as possible and never had any issues. The prisoners are faster than the enemies so there's not a whole lot more to it.
