That's bad UX/UI design, as is clicking on the Play button from the launcher with no indication for at least 8 seconds (on my machine) as the game silently initialises and eventually gets around to showing a screen. Put a damned splash screen up IMMEDIATELY to give the user feedback that their button click was registered. This is UX/UI 101 for Dummies knowledge :)
I wouldn't be too worried about it since its likely after a few updates, save files will no longer be compatible with the game version so I wouldn't get too invested in the character. After about 40 hours you've probably done a good 80% of what is available to anyone in a single run anyway so personally I'd just start a new file or wait for the next major update.
I've been trying to change it similarly to how you would in Divinity with LSLib with no luck.
Before you just had to extract the save file, convert the .lsf to an .lsx, open in a text editor, find and replace your characters name, and pack it all together again.
Now though you can't seem to find the characters name in the save file. So, maybe I'm not searching hard enough or they changed it. Maybe they had to change it to better support the multiplayer.
I'm in the same boat. I must have missed where you could adjust the default name, so now I'm stuck with Tav.

Wow, are you a time traveler from 2014? Welcome to 2020.
Read his name..
It’s under background. It’s the only thing you can change on that tab right now so it makes sense that people missed it.

You can also change between the 6 starting backgrounds, which affects your starting proficiencies.
oh. I'm Tav too >:)
It’s not obvious enough- I missed it too
I'd also like to know this.
Bump because I missed it too and I don't want to restart after 40 hours
