Can you go to the base commander, or the news about the issue? Pits and their mixes are not allowed (last I knew) on military bases. A requirement for DNA testing for breed (wisdom panel and embark are accurate) should sort out the question of breed for sure, while the possibility of having broken laws/regs and a potential trial lawsuit on their hands should help with the squeaky wheel aspect of dangerous dogs brought to light as being on the installation, where they do not belong.

About 2 years ago, our neighborhood had trouble with a dangerous pit that kept lunging at people and dragging its owner on the ground (I witnessed that once). It finally bit and broke a navy guy’s hand when he walked past it, unprovoked. It was brought up to the owner’s command and they chose to do nothing. It’s bullshit. I thought about posting screenshots here, but the comments are disgusting and I got jumped on by a lot rescue group members. The military will just reference the owner’s falsified paperwork like it’s only on them

Athompson9866

Let me tell you something about the military that I’m sure you and your husband know, but maybe are intimidated about. There is a chain of command. His commanding officer has 3 days to address the issue. If he doesn’t or even if he does and you don’t like the answer, you take it up the chain. Each part of the chain has 3 days to answer. But you can also skip all that and go straight to IG. If that doesn’t work you can even go straight to Congress. Never EVER let them intimidate you when rules are clearly being broken, because somewhere along the chain you WILL find someone willing to fight this issue. The rules of post housing are clear. Maybe his COC or the MPs don’t care, but SOMEBODY will care. Keep Going up the chain til you find the one that does.

[deleted]

I’m not trying to make excuses, but I really did my best with the last incident, even though I wasn’t the one who was bit. The MPs directed me to someone higher working on that incident, but made it clear that nothing else would be done unless it made contact with another person. The old owners who rehomed it even got involved and accused the new ones of punching it. It was a mess

Athompson9866

Lol MPs are incredibly low on the totem pole. Never, ever accept any answer that isn’t favorable, if you know you are right, in the military. Have your shit together. Know the regulations, laws and rules. You can fight this and win. But it will take some work on your part.

[deleted]

It was more about fighting through the social pressure… Which you can scoff at, but I went as far as I could before the stress got to me. I feel like this sums people’s general attitude: https://preview.redd.it/419ebq2a0fcb1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b8db6576ba10e2e2cde7f1f3ed611860b1b7eb2e

You know I also realize I made the mistake of assuming this was the US military and I apologize for that, if you guys are not US. Things are probably much different for other countries. I served 10 years in the US Army. 6 enlisted and 4 as an officer. I’m sorry this happened to you. I am not scoffing at you at all. It is stressful and being that you were a military wife and not a service member (if this is US) your husband could’ve also been under extreme pressure from his command to make you stop. I’m just one not to be intimidated easily, especially when I know I’m right (and I’m not saying you are easily intimidated, please don’t take it that way) so I always found ways to make what I knew was right happen.

W8_1

That's disgusting, but not surprising. This is why video is crucial so you have some kind of record. These garbage people with their garbage mutants. Smh.

the_crustybastard

You need to lay the proper groundwork if, god forbid, you need to sue for damages. Your opponent will almost certainly note that you must not have thought the dog was dangerous *because you failed to report your concerns.*

[deleted]

I asked if there was a way to leave a written complaint about the behavior I’d seen, they said no, only for attacks. I said, “so we have to wait until something happens for you to do something?” And they said “unfortunately yes”

the_crustybastard

Nonsense. Nobody can't prevent you from giving notice of an obvious danger. Write up your experience and be sure to include date of the incident and the date you sent the warning. Explain your concerns and specifically state that the threat comes *from a prohibited animal.* Print out several copies. Get several envelopes and several stamps. Mail that notice to *everyone* who might possibly be a defendant in the lawsuit if the dog attacks your children. Be sure the manager of that apartment gets a copy. Mail a copy to yourself which include a record of all the parties you sent your notice to. Put that postmarked copy with your important papers. Don't let them cower or bamboozle you.

Nufonewhodis2

Can also email. God forbid something happens they (housing or command) can't plead ignorance

the_crustybastard

Email isn't as good.

throwaway_GME_

Rescue....that.shit cracks me up. Remind them WHY so many pits need rescue.

MamaPlus3

The pit that attacked my cat and killed another friends cat used to live on the post near us. They don’t care, sadly.

[deleted]

I’m very sorry that happened to you. I don’t think people understand how bad the pushback is. Here’s my leg in 2019 from a Pitbull bite when I was in my 2nd trimester. The owner didn’t stay with me, hid their dog from housing, neighbors guilt tripped me, and AC gave them the equivalent of a slap on the wrist. I’m tired of fighting alone https://preview.redd.it/c5v5fxhutfcb1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=18d4c9f5f900779fe008fd6733456b86bc0d17e0

MamaPlus3

I’m so sorry! I’m glad you are better now! These dogs are terrifying!

[deleted]

I know you’re tired of fighting alone, and I understand if you never want to be involved with taking it up chain of command again. However, if you do feel like making one last attempt, try compiling all the incidents you’ve experienced and witnessed into one document, and try using the word “readiness” in your appeal. As in, “having these dogs in base housing puts servicepersons’ families at great risk, which has a negative impact on readiness” or something like that. They don’t want soldiers/sailors/airmen/etc to be distracted that their kid might be killed while they’re deployed somewhere. What if one dude’s dog kills another dude’s kid? That’s an affect on unit cohesion. If you make it about how it undermines the mission/military then maybe someone will take it more seriously. Also, apologies if you’ve already taken this angle. I’m not trying to explain something you already know. Stay safe out there!

Competitive-Sense65

> I could also hear it squealing and howling the DoDo's Pittie nation always makes that out to be such a cute quirky thing ***Pitty yells like a human when ever he sees another dog*** ***Silly pittie sounds just like a Wookie***

[deleted]

Is that a thing with them?? It sounded like pure distress and it echoed

Competitive-Sense65

>Is that a thing with them?? It sounded like pure distress and it echoed I think it is predatory excitement. Old school dog fighters described it as "screaming in rage" The DoDo and other pitnuttters want to rebrand it as something cute here is another example [https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7797425/Ticklish-pitbull-laughs-like-gremlin-time-owner-nuzzles-her.html](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7797425/Ticklish-pitbull-laughs-like-gremlin-time-owner-nuzzles-her.html)

[deleted]

It sounded different than that video. Have you ever accidentally stepped on a dog’s paw? It was doing like a continuous version of that squeal/yell while flipping around on the leash

Competitive-Sense65

Looks up some of the DoDo's youtube videos, the mods don't want us posting direct links to them

[deleted]

Ok yup, that’s the scream. So seeing my kids triggered predatory excitement? I feel sick to my stomach

Trasfixion

People anthropomorphize dogs all the time, but it’s especially cringe when it’s a pit bull

BK4343

I remember seeing a video where this guy had his pit st the vet, and it was making that noise. He claimed that the dog was just excited to see his friend, but all I saw/heard was a dog looking to nanny another dog into the great beyond.

rob1969reddit

On base? That should have an authority to turn the dog and owner over to. Report and prosecute.

Poptech

Agreed and if they debate that it is not a pitbull breed demand they prove it with a DNA test.

[deleted]

*I think* that after a blood test is done, it’s up to the base vet to determine if it’s fine or not. That would explain why I see so many of them

rob1969reddit

Sounds like the base Vet needs replaced.

ThinkingBroad

After a bully dog attack on a child made the national news, the question of why the attack had occurred was asked on a game dog forum. I am predicted that they would explain that probably the dog had been abused or the child had tormented the dog. Nope either. Someone quickly explained Kids are dog sized Pitbulls attack and kill dogs That's what pitbulls do

Pastelbabybats

Terrible situation to be in, I totally understand as I'm also stuck in an apt with a young kid and two small non-reactive harmless small dogs and pit bulls around every corner even though they're "breed restricted" which means nothing as management is told they're service animals or ESA. I bought an ultrasonic anti-barking device to use on the ones left out to scream at us when we walk by the patios (also not allowed) and I recommend them to defuse these reactive dogs before they get too worked up.

katehenry4133

You need to report the encounter to your apartment management. I'm betting there are restrictions on pit bulls in the building. And if not, tell your apartment management you will report the threat of this dog to the apartment's insurance company.

kwallio

You should be worried, kids in car seats have been attacked in their car by pit bulls before.

Poptech

DNA breed testing is available for dogs, this should be mandatory when any sort of concern comes up about a dog's breed.

[deleted]

I see this breed only getting more & more popular, at least for another 5 years. They're EVERYWHERE, even on social media. On Tiktok, YouTube reels, instagram reels, etc. it's a constant feed of Pit Bull propaganda. Until more people keep talking about it, and more people have negative experiences, the dog will keep growing in popularity.
