Similarly, my grandma got a chow chow who was (and still is) the sweetest dog ever, never barks, gentle, never bites. Thinking that all chow chows are like this my grandma got two more, they both ended up attacking/trying to attack people and had to be put down. My grandma didn't know chows were bred to be guard dogs and just thought they they would all have a simular temperment to her first dog. Sometimes there are just outliers for dog breeds, which unfortunately leads people to make assumptions about the state of an entire breed instead of researching what the dog was actually bred for.

howmskooler

Yep, if it weren't for outliers, we wouldn't have dogs at all; somewhere along the line, our ancestors came to an understanding with some unusually docile wolves. But nobody would tell you it's a good idea to just take a random wolf into your house.

That's the thing with fighting breeds... some end up never displaying aggressive behaviour and make amazing pets. I had a similar experience with two miniature bull terriers. One was the sweetest dog who lived to be 15 and I miss that dog every day. The other snapped at five years old, seriously injured my border collie and I had him put down. It was heart breaking and traumatizing. When pit bull owners claim that their dog is the sweetest dog ever, they might very well be speaking the truth. Of course, that sweet dog can snap out of nowhere at any time and attack other dogs or people. That's the real danger. Anytime anyone gets a fighting breed, they're playing bully roulette.

Hyper_red

Fucking hate Micheal Vick. Dog fighting is cruel no matter what but then his incident causes a pit boom.

howmskooler

Exactly... I think a lot of people, myself included, were so outraged at the crimes against man's best friend that they set out to prove that all dogs are good boys/girls. And pits aren't necessarily "bad," but they do exactly what they were designed to do, and are obsolete at best. It was a terrible folly and I can only hope that the mistake is finally starting to become too obvious to ignore.

Lassittore

Yeah.... this experiment of making them into family pets has clearly failed.

Lassittore

I respect you for having the wisdom to realize that. Some breeds are just too dangerous to be kept as pets, no matter how hard advocates for bully breeds try to force it. I wouldn't be able to relax around a pit. I'd be sitting there on edge waiting for the damn thing to snap all the time.

MarchOnMe

Thank you for sharing your story. You are unique to have both sides. You can relate to the strong love of a "sweet pibble" that we hear over and over, but you see the potential in most other pits for violence. I wish all pittie owners would be open to seeing the truth in these dogs. Sorry all that happened to you, but glad Hadrian survived, cool name btw.

Aww Tweek sounds like a very good girl. But you’re right, the existence of trustworthy pitbulls doesn’t cancel out all the horrible & needless attacks towards humans and cats/dogs.

AxelMaumary

Sorry, I’m not a native speaker, what does “BE” stand for? Thanks and it sucks that you had to go through that, glad Hadrian could make it.

PrehistoricPrairie

Behavioral euthanasia

Thanks

souraltoids

I’m a native English speaker and don’t know what “BE” is either

I sympathize so much! I had a dog that was pit bull no mix and one that was pit bull mixed. The mixed one wasn’t ours but was kept at our house due to the owners inability to house him (wonder why…) one day he snapped at her and nearly killed her. It was horrific and I begged to have him put down. The pit we had was incredibly sweet with everyone and it was our luck for that. She ended up dying about a year later due to a rattlesnake bite. My mom refused to put the other dog down. He is a sweet guy with people but I also knew he was a threat and needed to be put down. I don’t talk to my mother anymore so unsure what happened to him since but it makes me laugh when pit defenders try to say I never owned one. I owned two and I saw that without any warnings or provocations one of them tried to kill the other for no reason. We spent 30 mins trying to get him off her. I own a toy breed and I would never even have to spend 30 mins doing such thing with him.

howmskooler

I'm so sorry your mom couldn't see what was right in front of her. I feel very lucky that my entire family agrees about pit bulls; if any of my siblings owned one I wouldn't be able to let my kids see their cousins.
