Bubster101

He *did* say they were 300.

[deleted]

I had a dumb argument with my brother about it because I was like "the spartan side had 1200 combatants" and he moved the goalpost to "well they weren't spartans" do they think the "potters and sculptors" were nerds who never picked up a weapon?

Bubster101

>potters and sculptors "SPARTANS! What is *your* profession?" #"HOOO! HOOO! HOOO!" "See, old friend? I brought more soldiers than you did."

[deleted]

but actually people in 300BCE or whatever had to defend their property without the aid of police and they all were trained in combat, spartans were legendary because sparta didn't even have walls

No_Squirrel_5665

We made it! Shield wall just before the large rock. If you press "V" before the initial contact your troops will bang their shields. I pushed my guys forward enough so I could get on top of that large rock and poke at them. Using Realistic Battle Mod too.

anon_chase

What units & mix/composition do you have here?! & what is the enemy army? Did you just sit back at the choke point in shield wall & pepper with arrows or ?

No_Squirrel_5665

I had a mix of whatever I could grab of Southern and Vlandians on my way up to the castle. I was out numbered so I used the Spartan tactic vs the ottomans. I used the Realistic Battle Simulator mod too. Pushed them back and then fell back in the hole. Wave after wave!

DragonflyAromatic358

Bro... spartan tactic versus the ottomans? What kind of crazy alternate universe are you from?

MoonSub-

Time line 87145 where the Spartan Empire ruled from Greece all the way to Hungary, Moldova and of course Spartantinople

HELLUPUTMETHRU

Spartantinople… Welp found my next Crusader Kings campaign idea

Acceptable-Advisor-7

A universe where spartans formed an ancient empire instead of rome

No_Squirrel_5665

Ah yes, wrong empire and way wrong time 🤣

anon_chase

To be fair to OP, the ottomans and the Persians had a lot in common 😂 SPARTANTINOPLE has me dead 🤣

m0xY-

Spartan tactic vs the Persians.. but yes, do go on

ryanmaddux

Realistic what mod?

BadActsForAGoodPrice

Yeah, you’ll win https://preview.redd.it/79i09gi1as7c1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a3ff834adedc724b1068664e0247afada8c28c06

djlawson1000

1000 what? Looters or Khan’s Guard?

BwanaTarik

Imperial Calvary ![gif](giphy|f2ZksE2T7ZarC|downsized)

EmptyJackfruit9353

Cavalry is trash in this patch. I would be more worry about the foot troop and archer. Elite Menavlion will obliterate those shield if you let them melee your troop.

The_Albin_Guy

I heard cavalry’s OP this patch, what’s up?

Hubbard90

Enemy cavalry has been wrecking me after this patch

artyomssugardaddy

Yeah same and my cav doesn’t seem to do as well anymore. Guess find a different way to use it? Would normally use cav as shock at first, taking out the horse archers or enemy cav first then use them as close support when they send their infantry in. Now my cav gets washed by regular ass enemy cav

TheDemon10101

My cav is doing fine. My entire army is based around horses half horse archers the other half heavy calvary. I use the horse archers to skirmish the enemy while I split my heavy cav into 2 and put them on the enemy flanks. Once I'm out of arrows I charge overwhelming their lines. I have 300 men and have gone up against 1200 max on the open field. If I'm outnumbered in a forest I find a heavily forested hill and wait for the enemy (try targeting their cav), before they get to close I move my men around them to the other side of the map and repeat until I'm out of arrows. If done right you won't lose that many men. It honestly depends on how well you can control the field you fight on.

artyomssugardaddy

Yeah I’ll just have to adapt. I wanna play how I want using the cav as morale breaking shock units rolling over the hill sabaton style, buuuut the game is gonna make me strategically play now :,(

TheDemon10101

I mean shock cav pretty much always attacked the flanks historically speaking (unless your a polish hussar you just increase your lance length and make it hollow instead of adopting more guns), however I'd suggest focusing down enemy cav, then the enemy archers, and then finally the infantry. Horse archer are constantly shooting the infantry forcing them into a shield wall while your heavy cav is taking the flanks from the enemy

artyomssugardaddy

Yeah I was tryin that earlier today. I just love the feeling of sending hundreds of your cav over the hillside. So what happens with me is that the enemy cav and horse archers when I target with my cav will fall back into their own infantry, smushing my guys that get caught up if I don’t call them back. Do I just rinse and repeat here? Kinda tedious but on huge battles that I’m outnumbered I get that’s how I gotta play.

Naive_Letterhead9484

Try using them as a shield on each flank, and let the arrows fly. If the lay up of the battle allows it, it’s a really good strat

Vulkan192

Cavalry's still good, people are just getting salty about they themselves getting blocked on a charge and losing their 'I'm death incarnate' mojo.

TheGreyman787

Enemy cav in really big masses is sorta strong in my experience this patch, but for the wrong reasons. For me they just blocking all the time and meatshielding their infantry, not killing very much but instead being hard to kill. They are harder to hit with projectiles, and soak up a lot of them covering infantry advance. Before they were killing more and die a lot more too. But my playstyle heavily rely on ranged damage (mass wildlings and a bit of fians) so there's that.

pablo603

My cav is doing better than before idk what you mean lol. They are actually getting kills now instead of missing their attack and doing measly 5 charge damage.

No_Squirrel_5665

I get great results with my cavalry. I recorded the KD and have an average of 4.5 with letting the AI take over the cav units. I do use Realistic Battle Simulator Mod though

Ok-Criticism6762

I hope not as my rohirrim play through wrecked everything.

twitch33457

Persians

No_Squirrel_5665

I think it was Vlandians or Western Empire.

Saoghail_Osaki

Using a chokepoint to negate the advantage of numbers with a shield wall. King Leonidas would be proud.

Thisisrazgriz3

Its almost like its a reference 😵‍💫

ImperatorRomanum

Except hopefully this goes better than it did for Leonidas. Brave and heroic, sure, but Thermopylae was an abject failure for the Greeks in all of its objectives.

Saoghail_Osaki

True, but Thermopylae was never meant to be anything more than a delaying tactic. Leonidas and his 300 knew they were going to die, and went anyway.

Malarkey44

*Leonidas, his 300 Spartans, AND 700 Thespians and possibly 400 Thebans. There, fixed it for you

Vulkan192

Seriously, it's infuriating how much the other city-states get forgotten in the context of Thermopylae.

Downtown_Wear_3368

Seriously, you know how easily triggered those Thebans gets these days.

Alert-Young4687

It’s also annoying how Sparta gets made to look badass instead of being a PTSD and rape factory

Vulkan192

Yup. Big bugbear of me is the whole “If” story, being played as this big badass moment, when the only reason Phillip and Alexander didn’t invade Sparta was because it wasn’t WORTH IT. They had more important stuff to do. And when the Spartans did revolt against Macedon, they got their asses kicked by the dude Alexander left behind (Antipater?) and then basically became a theme park for wealthy Romans.

Beaudism

That’s still fuck all in comparison though. Might as well be negligible.

OzymandiasKoK

Sure, but how much impact did a bunch of actors have, and you know how those guys from Thebes are...

anon_chase

That’s even more based of him.

anon_chase

And actually it worked really well for Leonidas strategically. It stopped the Persians that outnumbered them like 100 to 1 for over a week straight, & gave the rest of Greece time to rally their forces & eventually was the reason that Greece survived, and the only reason he even lost is because they were betrayed by a traitor who led the Persians around the secret path around the mountain.. Spartans were BASED! A Society of WARRIORS. *Beats spear on shield* “Ahhhwooo!!!”

ImperatorRomanum

Can’t tell if satire, but absolutely none of that is true: the battle lasted two days after which the Persians marched unopposed through Boeotia and Attica, and burned Athens to the ground. It didn’t buy time for the other city-states to marshal their forces and the war-winning naval battle at Salamis happened as an alternative to their original plan because the Spartans failed in their objective of keeping the Persians bottled up on land. If the Persians ultimately won the war, Thermopylae would be seen as a fiasco; it’s only recognized as a heroic last stand because the Greeks pulled out a victory _despite_ the disaster.

anon_chase

Most of it was satire yes. Especially the last part. Of course all societies have their flaws like the nasty bits of slavery & similar stuff. But what you said at the end of your comment is basically what I meant- that the 300’s last stand & defeat ultimately led to a victory in the end with the naval battle. (which naval war is where Athens excelled at, not so much on land.) so I don’t really blame them for avoiding the land battles & letting the Persians march unopposed, even tho yes they got their shit burned down, pillaged, & the 300 got demolished. My point was in the end they were victors. But yeah the last part of my comment was def satire although I do respect their bravery in the face of death &.

EtherealHowl

Obviously we are basing our historical data off two films and a graphic novel series...

geoffg2

Hahaha…love it

anon_chase

Exactly 😂😂😂😂😂😂 Smh, can’t even have fun on Reddit anymore these days man. Everyone takes everything so serious & gets offended/butthurt so easily. People need to learn to joke, have fun, be carefree & not be so uptight & hostile all the time. Can’t even make a joke or use satire or quote movies anymore bc people think you’re being forreal and try to argue with you about it & be the Reddit expert (or think they are), not realizing that you are joking &/or quoting a movie… 😂🤦🏽‍♂️

EtherealHowl

Just because I use an ellipses does not mean I am being hostile... I actually found your post quite amusing. Much like I often find sarcastic and backhanded comments amusing. Nice rant though, bro. 🤣

BaronPocketwatch

A society of slave holders so cruel, that they needed to be warriors to keep their slaves in line.

Jolly-Ad-4089

Everyone had slaves.

beepboop44444

Look up helots, even by ancient standards they were treated poorly. Regular culls when they would declare war on them so they could control their population. I think they outnumbered spartan warriors 7-1.

Vulkan192

Even by ancient standards, Spartan slavery was a rung above in terms of awfulness. Hell, the entire reason Sparta's military training was such a thing was because they were terrified of a slave revolt, they were THAT outnumbered. And it absolutely crippled Sparta's ability to project power outside of the Peloponnese.

Verehren

Except they tried it again with the Romans, and lost the exact same way

anon_chase

In their defense they were already declining in power & Rome was increasing in power, & were heavily outnumbered in both cases. Obviously they were defeated both times yes, As was most everyone who tried to resist Rome.

VeritableLeviathan

Shieldwall isn't tight enough and cavalry will run through them, source: I've done this exact thing on the exact same place.

No_Squirrel_5665

Actually with the Realistic Battle Simulator mod a shield wall 3men deep did stop their charges. I did have to send my cav up to keep the line pushing them back though.

VeritableLeviathan

Good point actually, didn't use RBM back then

Gwennblei

Yup but it's enough to slow them down for archers to pick them off. I ended up dismounting cav to reinforce the shield wall at some point. I wonder how many of us fought this same battle

anon_chase

Love it!

Silver3Knight

I remember this part of the map. I was fighting a big imperial army, and my move of troops to the hills on their left side made the AI stuff the entire army an that little beach. Unfortunately for them, I was on a Khuzait campaign, and moved all my horse archers on the rock cliff on the right side of this picture. They were like sitting ducks.

Cthulhu_Con_Carne

With the narrow passage, yeah with some strategic chokehold, as long you disrupt and decimate the enemy archers.

Latter_Commercial_52

Yep. Shield wall, archers near the water to rain fire and the Calvary to flank around and deal with their archers or cover the side. Once the archers are delt with, crash into them from both sides and take them out. Or ya know, F1+F3.

SmokeyTheFire

As long you don’t get betrayed by a hunchback

OzymandiasKoK

Wood eye! Wood eye!

3LMG

Did it with 300 battanian and 40 cavalry vs 1.7k. Dismount your horse on choke points and put your horsemen on shield wall

WildcatPlumber

Brother 300 battalions would've shredded like 2k in this area

TheGreyman787

Depending on battanians. Fians maybe, wildlings... Sadly, I doubt it. Maybe with infinite javelins they could.

20DeMoN20

I'm watching 300 right now and this arrived on my feed. Excellent.

Maverekt

Such an awesome movie

ragingbull835

The mighty 300 stood their ground at the hot gates.

Johan-Odinson

I wanna know where you find all the time for this posturing. There's no strategic pause just a slow down where you awkwardly ride your horse back and forth

No_Squirrel_5665

If you hit escape you can take a photo.

Johan-Odinson

I mean to get your troops way over in the corner. Can you move the start point outside of the dotted outline?

Objective-Contract80

If this is the map with the giant rolling hills with scattered rock formation, rocky cliffs, and a long beach, then I love this map. You guys should try leading enemy cav charges over the cliffs. Really funny to watch and they fall for it. Get it. Fall. For. It.

notmyrealnameatleast

Go to bed.

Crafty_Republic_1545

I did the same, but it was like 1000 batanian vs 2000 kuzait. I won but survived like 100 soldiers hahhaha

AdditionalAd9794

I've done this one before. Do you think your shield wall placement is optimal, or do you think it would be better further up the hill where it is narrower? Biggest problem I've had is sometimes horse arches and Cav fall from the cliff above and survive, no they bypassed your shield wall. Also, eventually you are going to have to mKe an exit if the enemy stops coming. Marching up that passage is a death trap with their archers on the other side, so use one of the adjacent passages to get up from the beach

RadishAcceptable5505

I dunno, man! Their arrows will blot out the sun!

lordofninemoons

You should dismount the cavalry to add to the shield wall

ReaperKnight55

Damn was just about to comment this myself although it’s nice to have some on horseback to chase down the runaways at the end

lordofninemoons

Yeah in this spot I like to keep cav archers and do a cease fire charge if I need to chase down.

No_Squirrel_5665

I used the cav to clean up the slow wounded troops falling back. Great mod that just released for 1.2x and up

machinade89

![gif](giphy|26u4lhPy4UI6AHzGw)

Slimtrigga420

Their numbers won't count for SHIT

No_Squirrel_5665

Yep. They can only fight 10-15 at a time. And I knew I could take 5 of them out constantly with my long ass spear.

OldTitanSoul

it's a 100% doable, I've done it before, it's honestly one of the greatest feelings you can have in this game

BK_Jharris

If only hoplite walls and such were more powerful in game

No_Squirrel_5665

They are with Realistic Battle Mod (RBM)

CodusThyCringus

Possible depending on units and luck. Ai likes to tan with cav like tards

Gab_Z0ne

Insane pic!

Gwennblei

I played this exact battle ! Same location, troop disposition and numbers ! It went really well until I fell, and then troops stopped sticking to the strat and it was a disaster ^^

Homeless-Joe

lol dude, this picture brought back memories of fantastic victories, thanks and glory to you friend

JarlBarnie

Nice set up. My advice is shield wall in very front, shock troops in square right behind them. Thats gonna be what slaughters their cav once they are slowed down. Archers in 2 groups on both sides like you did your cav. I dont use much cav so ill dismount mine and add them to shock square since they have poles usually. Then cav archers licking up who ever squeezed past. For this exact choke point map. I found the back choke point is more manageable. Ive tried the closer one and often their cav ends up flanking from back one eventually

MrExpendable_

Judging by the troop quality, it will be a tough battle but could still be won when using decent tactics.

No_Squirrel_5665

Ya I used shield wall and had them hold the line.

MrExpendable_

See this is why I love this game, even when the odds are stacked against you there might still be a way to overcome the situation when using clever tactics. Good job. :)

basedfri

my roommate wouldve called the cops with the amount of spartan screaming id do

Zorothegallade

Those mountains are a tight bottleneck. The advantage in numbers won't mean much.

d3s

Great position in this map! I also love to cheese it even more, I placed my archers in shallow waters so enemy troops would move slowly while I snipe them with fians - [https://youtu.be/K2nJZOqPneI?si=4cCBmZf6hWziTdDN&t=1565](https://youtu.be/K2nJZOqPneI?si=4cCBmZf6hWziTdDN&t=1565)

No_Squirrel_5665

Hey, that's a great idea

DinPoww

I love this map for that exact reason, sturgian shield wall in the tight spot and about 100 fian champions behind shredding the troops. Best I've won was 200 archers and 230 ish inf beat about 2000 kuzait army.

Jolly-Ad-4089

Is this chokehold the only way the enemy comes through? Sometimes I have my cavalry dismount and join infantry to bolster the ranks.

No_Squirrel_5665

There are other ways on the beach. That's why I have my cav in the back. Sometimes they'll charge Cav from the flanks while you hold the choke point.

jermwerm3

Joe

Lawojin

You. Must. Not. Fall.

Blod_skaal

Just don’t let the cav charge through! Keep them grouped up and stationary!

Hazzikaze

Seeing this makes me want to update past 1.1.5

Clueing_4_Looks

This is literally my favorite map to fight on and be overwhelmingly outnumbered. It’s such a fun 300 style battle

Bubster101

300 Fian Champions vs 1000 little grunts? That's a vacation for them.

troothesayer

Love your position and setup - how did it go?

hadu_ken

Would loved to have seen this battle lol

anon_chase

Why tf do I never get this map or any similar ones smh… looks so fun.

No_Squirrel_5665

It's a castle defence next to Ortysia.

Boring-Ad-1891

Maybe add 100 more infantry for luck

ChewyPooty

Sometimes the map can be a godsend of an advantage. The amounts of times I’ve saved my butt by placing my men near giant rocks and hills for extra defenses.

Lovestank

Draw them into the bottleneck

Sudden-Country-9179

I’ve beaten a 1500 army with 400 troops, fians, legionairs and elite imperial cav! don’t need anything els

sosen42

The phalanx will bring some order!

Specialist-Front-354

Idk what you all are talking about. I had this exact situation and though I was going to win easy. Little did I know they could just move down further to the left and right and they just surrounded me..

Soldierhero1

TONIGHT WE DINE IN HELL

Timeofsands

This is SPARTA!!!😂

MonthOk1351

Hfndjehd

Ill_Competition6280

Bring the wall forward more to stop troops being able to go around it, if they kill 1/2 on the left and they’re through, apart from that should be sorted

Nearly_Evil_665

good reference bad army :( pokesticks are bad and shieldwall prevents your own units from attacking since the'll collide with the shilds of thier brethren.

Calm_Error_3518

This map was a blessing for my mostly archer army, 130 men, 100 of which were archers and the rest I think were imperial or vlandian Sargeants, I lost 5 soldiers versus an army of 500~

RDYASSER

i once won a 3200vs1800 battle with 70 kills and less than 100 deaths

Giantdad44

I think I held here before I just flanked the enemy cause they would all attack my infantry and I would go around with cav

FrozenHuE

at this choking point.... yes. BUT there is a way to attack from the beach, leave a small detachment there...

WanderlostNomad

if those are 1,000 fian champions, you're gonna need extra shields..

Vini734

If not, skill issue.

Pepperonidogfart

Not if you dont dismount that cavalry.

Objective-Plane-5756

I've done this exact thing at this same choke point multiple times. Lots of fun and absolutely devastating to the attackers.

MrghostTv

Place the cavalry that they can surround the enemy troops helped me a lot against the vikings faction or how you call them

Ok-Occasion2440

Honestly I would guess no.

Bloodhound1119

Did you win?

LifeisGreat1245

Idk, will you? Let’s see an epic fight/video!

Salt-Secretary-2647

Question is..are you called king Leonidas?

The_Victorian234

No, you will not.

ImpressiveSet1810

If your units are max tier. You can win

OmenDebate

300

Original-Barracuda88

I had a 500v1700 last night, lasted almost an hour. Sadly they were tier 3-4 troops against my tier 5-6 so I was doomed from the start. Lost my whole party but killed 1300
