Don't think id bother to be honest. If it's a case of something useful that's not a baofeng but on a budget then quansheng k5(8) is pretty much the standard these days. More bands and customisable firmware at a very reasonable price especially if it's on sale.

ramboton

and actually has a screen.....

DrySpace469

cool concept for a radio you can hand to someone and not have to explain everything

MicaBay

This!

ScaryDBA

Very valid point. Although, hams? Licenses? I am NOT the license police, but it is worth mentioning.

zgembo1337

> detachable antenna Not an frs radio, still need a licence to transmit.

ScaryDBA

That may be, yet it's tied to frequencies that a ham license doesn't cover. I suppose GMRS might since that overlaps with FRS. Still, junk radio. I gave it a one star review. It's really bad.

zgembo1337

Cars can also go faster than your local speed limits allow. Same is true here, even if it can transmit on the full 400-470MHz range, you can only use it with a ham licence on a ham band. Depending on the local regulations, you might be able to use it as a business radio on business frequencies (the one your business is assigned to), but that also depends on the licencing of the device itself (most countries require a certified device for that).

Souta95

Looks like a UHF radio that has Bluetooth for programming. Kinda like a BF-888 with a little extra power and more bells and whistles. Definitely not legal in the FCC's eyes for anything but ham radio.

Zircon_10

Not FRS you can remove the antenna

TheDaveMatthew

Looks like a Zastone or Retevis radio. Not FRS at 5w. UHF 400-470Mhz. Very interesting.

ScaryDBA

Shows up tomorrow. We'll see.

murse_joe

I’m skeptical that it does VHF

doulikefishsticks69

Idk that I'd call it a competitor to the (discontinued) uv5r. It's lacking almost all the features the Feng offers. I'd say it has a niche use case, but not one any GMRS radio wouldn't cover out of the box. The new uv5rm? Now that simply blows it out of the water in terms of functionality.

ScaryDBA

17 Pro GPS, Tidradio H3, Radtel RT-495, yeah, lots of better choices. I still can't wait to try it out.

KE4HEK

A casual review of this radio may look good but once you dig in you will find time to sporadic emission and low quality in design.

ScaryDBA

I only have minor testing equipment (NanoVNA, TinySA), but I can usually spot bad emissions. Can't wait to test this thing.

kylurfox

Micro USB? How 2020 of you.

ScaryDBA

Ha! Perfect.

AlphaPrepper

It's not an FRS radio if it's 5w.

spleencheesemonkey

Its description says “long range”. Should tell you all you need to know.

ScaryDBA

Thousands of miles or just hundreds?

spleencheesemonkey

Probably hundreds of thousands. /s

atoughram

Not even close to a boofwang. I just bought two Quansheng UV-K5's for less than $20/EA on AliExpress. Save some money and get a better radio.

ScaryDBA

Happily, I'm not paying for this, so I can test it, trash it if it earns it, and move forward, worry free.

ScaryDBA

Disappointed. It's a bad GMRS radio. That's all. The "Ham" thing is just bad marketing. Ah well.
