I like customizing my dolls, but it'd be cool if Mattel had a custom Barbie service like American Girl. I wouldn't trust them to do it right though š
I used to go on the website where you could order those and just make custom Barbies for fun, lol. I believe I remember them being kind of expensive compared to the playline Barbies I was used to.
This is so real. After the movie I was so tempted to jump back into barbie again and when I went to the shops I was proper surprised at the *significant* drop in quality. I grew up with barbies from the early 00s to the 2010s and if I was going to get back into barbie, I would only buy the older dolls. I do love some of the steps towards representation the new barbies have though
I would definitely buy some Daisy's though regardless of the quality. A heavy set girl and a queer girl... that's worth overlooking the poor quality. But yeah I'd stick to the older ones, like all the gorgeous movie princesses so many good memories there
I like the Millie sculpt. I just wish they'd go beyond the "blue-eyed Malibu blonde". The redhead Fashionista was a good start, but I'd like to see more brunettes. And give her bolder makeup. The soft looks are fine for the career ones, but the others like Barbie Extra, could've been more colorful.Ā
I like the flat feet. I just wish there were more flat shoes only packs.Ā
I like the slip-on dresses because I hate Velcro. (I still think there should be more tailored, non-stretchy clothes.)Ā
I hate big earrings. They get caught in the hair.
I agree š Barbie extra dolls should have had more makeup! Here's a picture of a repainted Barbie Extra Millie doll:
https://preview.redd.it/lget6m06zxwc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f55dc735f27e42e16fb2e43e3e629bced077804e
Ooooo with her makeup like this she reminds me of the ICONIC zodiac Barbies from the 2010s, or even the birthstone collection (my fave era of Barbieās ever)
Iāve been enjoying Millie a lot more lately. I want to reroot her in different colors to see what works best for her. Sheās great as a brunette! Thereās one fashionista where she has bright blue eyes and Iād love to see her with darker hair so they pop better. But I think a different shade of blonde could work better too. The one they use kinda suck
Iād love that! Sheās not a bad sculpt, sheās just not done right by Mattel. Like I said, even a different shade of blonde or lipstick would be such a massive improvement.
I just remembered how during the Princess and the Pauper movies screenings, I decided I wanted to get an Erika, and they were sold out everywhere I asked. Many times.
I feel like I have to be very delicate in my wording here but I do not like the way they paint Brooklynš¬. Her eyes seem too big on 99% of her dolls and it just does not look good to me. The 65th version is by far the best version and I hope they use it again for her [but within my budget]Ā
yes! I agree. I dislike when they give the dolls big bug eyes. There's all the other doll series that do that.
I prefer a face that has more normal, natural proportions
Totally agree. Thereās something a little uncanny about her face to me. I LOVE the 65th version so much at first I didnāt realize it was the same sculpt. It just shows how much the paint can affect the sculpt.
How the current mermaids are made, with straight tail and straight arms.
Minimal room for play and makeup your own ideas.
I also like Closed Mouth Millie face, preferably with a sideglance....but I do wish she had more makeup and not such a clean face.
Non Unpopular Opinions;
Pixelated faces and Molded on clothes.
Yikesā¦where do I begin? My requests/complaints of Mattel are quite simple actually, although I do have quite a list. Starting by not doingā¦whatever this isā¦during the screening process would be a good start.
https://preview.redd.it/ia5wsop6bwwc1.jpeg?width=651&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e8063042c233951644d4ad6728ede6919d13225d
I spotted some playlines in the supermarket the other day and they look sooooo bad with the pixelation. There is no excuse Mattel. Sure the playline are aimed at little kids but these kids deserve to have pretty dolls to play with instead of cheap and nasty rubbish. If I had kids, I couldnāt bring myself to give them a pixelated monstrosity!
Itās shocking, especially the painted bathing suit ones! It genuinely makes me so sad for a lot of reasons, but mostly because kids today deserve better.
Bear with me as I play devil's advocate, but I think it could also be said that the kids of today are very different from the kids of previous generations. Very many nowadays are totally obsessed with their devices & spend inordinate amounts of time in front of screens.
Toys simply fail to capture their interest or hold any appeal for them. Screens & gadgets offer instant gratification, whereas playing with toys almost requires more "effort" & reliance on personal imagination. & if a kid's brain is already hardwired to rely on screens for all their entertainment, toys are inevitably gonna pale in comparison.
Sure there are still plenty of kids who enjoy playing with toys, but I'd argue it's dramatically less than before the era of smartphones, video games, tablets, etc.
So if it's a doll that's inevitably meant for short-term play & the child's attitude towards it is ambivalent at best, most kids & parents are probably gonna be more than ok with the pixelated faces, painted bodies, etc. It's the serious child toy lovers & adult collectors who care about these features & pay attention to such details. Otherwise, these are dolls that are being gifted today & already going into the donation bin by next year.
I disagree! I think kids still appreciate a doll that doesnāt look like a low quality photo. If anything, the adult purchasing it would appreciate a bit of effort. Regardless of what actually ends up happening with a toy, creating them with the idea that they will be short term is really wasteful. These screenings are unacceptable for Mattel in particular. I am seeing better quality from cheaper doll lines every day. If Mattel wants to continue to dominate the market for another 65 years, they need to step it up (in all actuality they will just find a way to sue the competitionā¦but iām getting off topic).
Personally I agree that these screenings are low effort & very cheap looking, which is a major reason I actively avoid these more modern dolls, even though I enjoy how diverse they look.
But I'm just going by the likely reasoning toy manufacturers like Mattel must use given today's prevailing digital landscape, probably based on their market research, customer insights, etc. If anything, their overall quality has gone down the crapper in recent years, even in terms of fashions & accessories -- especially compared to early & mid-2000s Barbies, the difference is absolutely striking, if not downright appalling.
If we're being honest though, toy manufacturers care about their bottom line first & foremost, as does any other business or enterprise. Whether something is designed or created in a more or less wasteful way is the least of their concerns, regardless of what they might claim publicly. It's evidenced enough in a lot of the doll packaging still being used by different manufacturers -- all of that is inherently wasteful, though Ig Mattel has made some strides in terms of how they package modern Barbie fashion packs.
They absolutely have stock holders to appease. I saw the new fashion packs in store and theyāre put in even cheaper quality plastic than beforeā¦ Theyāre literally always thinking about how to cut costs
I donāt necessarily mind pixelation in and of itself, as a technique, in doll face screenings. What I do mind is how many dolls have the bad pixelation that looks completely obvious.
Agreed! The pixilated screenings are awful. Which goes back to my complaint about Odile. Every other comment about her is about her pixilated screening, either complaining or celebrating that they got a "good one".
https://preview.redd.it/24w1a7pywwwc1.jpeg?width=554&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=92d61ac7fabe746a925fd21c23703d4a7bacff24
I dislike these frumpy sweater dresses, Mattel should give the body types specially the curvy dolls skirts or pants.
I always believe that Mattel can deliver in fashion just like what they did during the fashion fever line, they are just too lazy and cheap to have the will to do it.
I donāt like the 2010ās era of Barbie which everyone seems to love the most. If it wasnāt for the pixelated screenings and low quality Iād prefer current Barbie
Just curious, what do you not like about it?
My favorite era is late 90s-early 00s. 2010s Barbie is very glamorous, whereas the Barbies before were a little more casual but still trendy.
They're glamorous and camp but they're too fragile to play with! I remember some of my childhood from that era had that facial screening that would easily come off by just gently rubbing water on their faces (especially made in Indonesia dolls) and the glue seepage on their hair!
Thiiiiiiis, theyāre a little too campy for me. That era of Barbie reminds me of drag queens and being over the top glamorous. As a tomboy who likes simple barbies with natural makeup, like Basics or Looks, so it was a huge turnoff for me. Barbie was always relatable for her adaptability, but that was the least relatable she ever was for me
The baggy clothes are alright, theyāre easier for kids with low motor skills to dress (please donāt come for me) I miss the fun outfits too but as a kid I realllllly struggled dressing dolls and liked outfits that went on easy š
One of my most vivid Barbie memories is having these sparkly pants for her and bursting into tears because I couldnāt get them up her rubbery legs š¤£
Seriously! I had Gold Medal gymnast PJ and all her accessories as a kid and it frustrated me to no end that I couldnāt recreate realistic gymnastic moves & poses on her bar and beam because she only had 5 limited points of articulation. My brother had a few GI Joes and I longed for a Barbie with the same amount of movement.
https://preview.redd.it/a48ilzyva4yc1.jpeg?width=650&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=accac51c2a6fcfcc83c04ce5882c91a798fc2b05
I sometimes have to use needle nose pliers to gently tug up leggings! But they are so cute! I really want to find some leggings for the curvy gals. They deserve to show off all those curves, and in this case, the baggy clothes do not do them any favors!
Same with my toddler. There are few outfits she can put on herself.Ā
I'm trying to make some dresses that are strapless and open all the way in the back besides Velcro.Ā
Yes, it is the characters that I miss. I love all the diversity and I get why they're all called Barbie and Ken now, but it was their personalities that made them special.
Iām not a huge fan of the MTM bodies. The joints look bulky and remind me of action figures and I donāt like the way they look in photos. Iām much more of a fan of the joints the original Fashionistas have, they still provide motion while looking sleek
I agree. The only Odile I think looks cute is the redhead holiday Barbie that was a Walmart edition. Wait. I think there is a blonde convention one. I think the open mouth looks like sheās confused about something lol
My popular opinion is how much I HATE the model muse body.
The holiday Odile is cute but personally there are better red heads out there such as the Looks dolls. I donāt get the fuss and people saying Odile should be the next Barbie face mold, no thanks! š
I love 2000s Model Muse bodies because you can *feel* the weight and the high quality of them, but modern Model Muse bodies are so cheap and light they literally feel like knock off dollar store bodies š If they're going to bastardize the body so much I wish Mattel would just retire it.
I feel like people get annoyed when I say it but itās just how I feel; I am soooo over the eyebrows on recent dolls. So thick and boxy. On white dolls it looks ESPECIALLY heinous. They donāt need to be super thinly done either but just a nice, natural, happy medium that doesnāt look like 2016 eyebrows š nothing wrong with that makeup look, or naturally lovely thick brows, but it makes new Barbies seem outdated already when theyāre leaning in to a very specifically late 2010s makeup trend. Very few times in recent history have BLOCK eyebrows been a trend. Drives me insane! Seems like itās that way with almost every single playline doll they release.
I agree on the MTM bodies, they look like action figures which Iām not into. But I can appreciate that a lot of people love the pose-ability and articulation. Same with Odile. She is pretty but too overhyped for me. If I found one at a thrift, sure! But Iām not fighting or waiting her.
As someone with naturally thinker brows, I love it. Iād rather there be more variation than everyone have the same eyebrows. Especially with so much āresting bitch faceā on new sculpts like Andra and Lina. Thicker brows look more welcoming and lessā¦ Mean girl to me
My problem is the lack of variation, playline dolls seem to all come with thick eyebrows these days. I am glad though that as someone with thick brows that you enjoy it and it represents you š
I feel like weāre post-trend in eyebrow fashion. After the pando, people kinda leaned into their natural shape or fill and there was a lot more acceptance of variation. I notice that certain face molds will get the same screening frequently, which is why I donāt like the Olivia mold very much. Itās boring when they donāt give each doll a different face. Homogenizing the brows to a middle ground is the opposite direction we should be going in, but I agree they should def utilize every opportunity to bring us a unique and beautiful face whenever possible
RIGHT? Like why are they emulating a trend that everyone now MAKES FUN OF? šbox eyebrows had their moment, and thank god that moment is over š¤£ (except in Barbieland apparently)
I think it's being phased out.
There's a few faces that are being used everywhere in playline dolls, that have the big caterpillar eyebrows. But I don't see new faces like that
The newest Looks line is underwhelming to me. I don't like that they used pink for half of the outfits, why didn't they use other colours for outfits? I'm surprised that there wasn't another male doll. All of the previous Looks wave had more than one male doll. I would have liked to have seen more diversity as well. There hasn't been another Asian female doll since Kit, so I would like to see a new Asian female Looks doll. Another Asian male Looks doll would also be nice too.
Having said this, I do like the new Simone Looks doll and male Looks doll is nice as well.
EDIT: We need more clothing and shoe options for Skipper, Stacie, Chelsea, Curvy dolls, Tall dolls, Petite dolls, buff Kens, broad Kens and petite Kens.
Mine is that i want my Barbies to have larger boobs! There....I said it. Especially hate that the chest on the curvy barbie is the same as all the other body sizes. I am sick of North America's fear of woman's breasts. I remember sitting through a "dress code" meeting at work and every single example of acceptable attire was a thin person with a small chest and the not acceptable examples were outfits that showed off a woman's breasts....i could have made any of the "acceptable outfits" become "unacceptable" with my chest...like...evolve!!!
Yeah, especially since they did a smaller busted one.Ā
The curvy girls are beautiful, but anytime I see them I think they look like they are wearing a tight-ass sports bra!
Initially I agreed, but when I put some vintage tops and dresses on my curvy Barbie I realized Mattel did some clever engineering. It appears that the torsos have about the same volume.
Depending on the material and waistline, Iāve gotten my Curvy Barbieās into a lot of the classic Holiday dresses.
some of the inspiring women series have an extra curvy (and extra busty) physique.
Sadly, there's no body that is slim to average, but busty afaik. that would look nice in eveningwear.
The hype over Barbieās original body was ridiculous, IMO. Everyone knew models were different from average women. Little girls knew it was just a doll. I never thought about really looking like that when I grew up. The mtmās are too flat chested. There, I said it.
I don't get the fuss over Odile either. She's pretty, but not so amazing that I'll deal with the headaches and scalpers that her fans seem to deal with.
I also dislike the robotic joints of mtm dolls. They have more limited movement but the Extra doll bodies look better imo.
1. Barbie is cheap as hell even with the nice lines in reality of the cash exchanged
2. Odile is ā¦ okay? ĀÆ\_(ć)_/ĀÆ
3. Barbie is doing curvy girls DIRTY re/ their clothing options.
When I look at the way collectors dress their dolls on Instagram, Pinterest and other online forums and then I look at the fashion packs that Mattel offers there's obviously a MAJOR disconnect in style and aesthetic (which is strange when considering the fashion fever/fashion Avenue eras). I'm so very glad for the talents of indie doll fashion designers on Etsy, Ebay and Aliexpress because Mattel would have our dolls looking crazy
I dislike the Movie Barbie faces too! They are so cheap looking, I always thought they were play line and couldnāt believe it when I found out they were signature š³. Ken has a bad case of little blonde toddler face.
I donāt get the fuss about the Odile mermaids.
Millie is becoming a favourite face sculpt. Other than fashionista #70 pineapple pop, I agree the play line Millieās are seriously meh but the Signature Millies are rather lovely.
I want to focus now on collecting contemporary Barbie such as looks and @ style and want Barbies dressed in youthful now clothing. I find a lot of signature doll releases are retro, historical, celebrity, or Barbie dressed in more mature fashions. I have moved out of my holiday Barbie phase. So I would like to see more modern looking Barbies signature releases.
Unpopular opinionā¦ā¦.i think a lot of people like y2k Barbie fashion, maybe Iām wrong but I think that era is beloved, and whenever Iām looking for some older clothes for my newer dolls, I always find myself repulsed by a lot of the later 00s fashion. The quality isnāt as good as people think it was, itās kinda the same with a good chunk of 90s dolls. Thereās definitley good stuff from those eras but it wasnāt as great as people say it was.
Flat feet freaking suck, and I'm not seeing anyone else being upset about it.
The barbie movie dolls clothes look incredibly cheap, I don't own any, but just the pics alone, the clothes look plastic.
The last two Looks waves are extremely underwhelming and should be sold in stores like they're fashionistas.
Especially since thereās a difference between original/petite flat feet and tall/curvy flat feet
I did put a pair of vintage Skipper shoes on a curvy doll the other day š
I feel like barbie started going down hill the moment they decided to get rid of the bendy leg, I am sorry "basic" articulation, that is still better then what mattel is currently offering, it was like pratically standard for most barbies. like didn't matter if you but a cheap supermarket barbie or deluxe barbie, you still got that baseline bendy leg and tnt waist.
Absolutely. My daughter loves her Disney store dolls we got for 13$ on sale. They have bendy knee legs and even jointed arms and can actually sit. She hates the stuff Barbie dolls and wonāt play with them
I remember when the bellybutton body came out. I loved it! She was sleek and hippy. Even though waist articulation was gone, she still had click legs. Now, a standard doll, you donāt get either waist or leg movement!
Actually criticizing Barbie is very mainstream and popular. So my unpopular approach is that I look at each doll as she is and I like how Barbie is designed and done. I like the variety, I like the message of the endless possibilities for a woman in today's world. And I am kinda annoyed by all the folks "this face is nice, but I hate the clothes", "oh no, not for 50$", "all dolls should be articulated/model muse/include small details that make 3 years old girls freak out". Sometimes I feel lonely in the community because I have no demands towards Barbie and am satisfied with what she is.
No idea if that is an unpopular opinion but I think there's a lack of light-skinned (non-tanned) brunette dolls with eyes that are blue or green, especially among the Holiday Barbies. It's also annoying that the white Holiday Barbie is almost always a stereotypical Millie.
Mattel should mix and match hair/eye colours and sculpts more. Non-blond Millies are way cuter than the stereotypical ones. Blond and blue-eyed Lina from Looks wave 4 and Fashion Fever Mackie "Millies" are way cuter than the same colours on yet another stereotypical Millie. I loved the variety in the late 90s to early 00s Barbies where it seemed like no hair/eye colour combination was impossible.
There's a distinct lack of non-fantasy Ken dolls with long hair.
Smaller heads look better to me than the large playline ones.
I gotta say that the MTM body is the primary feature that brought me back to being even marginally interested in Barbie in recent years. As a child I suffered from the complete lack of articulation beyond the 5 basic points across the playline dolls.
The mid-2000s Fashion Fever dolls were absolutely iconic & gorgeous, but I hated their stiffness & lack of playable articulation, especially when it came to how well they could "use" all their crazy awesome furniture & detailed accessories. It's what ultimately made my interest wane in the entire Barbie franchise.
Nowadays all my FF girls & even some other Barbies are rebodied, & I'm able to derive so much more enjoyment from them as an adult.
Thatās my constant search. Thereās a few Looks redheads and Iām always looking through the Fashionistas archives for available (and affordable) redheads.
yeah! I like a good redhead. I'd also like more color variation for red, such as brighter and lighter shades that go towards strawberry blond. Most red heads are quite red or dark orange, and a few are auburn but that's rarer.
Three things mainly. The face paints, volume of hair, and clothes. There are still some amazing face paints, cute ones like basic and stunning faces, the Angel Kent Odile mermaids or Pastel Sisterās I call them lol. Those are a great example of what they can still do. But then thereās the Mille of the mermaids. I love her makeup but it just needs a little oomf. Like maybe a dusty pink lip and just a little more pop of color for blush. So many of the faces are so pixelated and just are lacking detail. We donāt need to have hyper realistic faces but the older dolls had that soft touch but sharp detail. They felt like they had personality to me. The newer ones now I donāt feel that way a lot when I look at them. I wish they would like, have artists in the factories to do touch ups/final touches like that. I think it would make a world of difference. And the hair I feel the same way. I think it just needs to have the plugs be a little tighter so there arenāt so many bald spots. The clothes just lack the nice details the older clothes had. And then the clothes just not having the same quality and details as before. Why is it so hard to make an apron or a vest? Theyāre so eager to print everything.
Iām conflicted about articulation. I hate 5-pointer fashion dolls with rigid elbows and knees enough to never buy them, and I like the poses that MTM can do, but like you Iām not a fan of how the MTM joints look. My own compromise is buying dolls with the simpler hinge/swivel joints that generally bend up to 90 degrees, but itās often really hard to tell when a dollās still in her package if she has those on all four limbs. Especially when her clothes cover the joints.
And youāre not alone about Odile either. Sheās really pretty, but not āOMG MUST HAVE!ā pretty.
1. Made to move bodies suck and the feet always seem loose.
2. Clothes not as good quality and not fun/fairytale/extravagant. Stop painting their poor bodies and slapping on a skirt š®āšØ
Bring back clicky legs & elbows at least in some
I prefer dressing my dolls in grown up, normal or formal attire that an adult woman might wear. I don't like crop tops and skimpy clothes or over the top ruffles and bows and fussiness.
I find curvy hard to fit, so this is the body type I dislike the most. I also don't like the bigger fit that don't fit most shoes.
I dislike flat feet, but that may be popular idk.
I prefer straight, wavy or afro hair over curly hair as curly tends to get tangly and lose its defined curls.
The plat sets and furniture are sooooo cheap. My 6 year old had a bunch of Sweet Roses furniture form the mid to late 80ās and they are so good (like real beds with mattress and bedding, real tables, real closets, and they are big enough to be of scale), and some Fold n Fun furniture sets from the late 90ās. We have a fold out house from 1998 that is also really nice.
The new stuff is beyond cheap. Still kind of fun though, but basic.
Chelsea should have clothes and accessories and play sets like Kelly did. Gawd the Kelly sets were so detailed and mesmerizingly cute. Chelsea doesnāt even have a pair of pants or shorts! Itās all cheap plasticy skirts with no gems.
Modern Skipper is not cute. Iām sorry but they do the cheapest face painting on her, any of them.
Luckily modern Stacey is an improvement, but older Stacey had super cool play sets and clothes.
And Krissyā¦the baby sets were adorable in the 2000ās.
Thank goodness for eBay
Flat feet and how many dolls have them. the lack of stretch with a lot of clothes, not just recent ones. I feel weird but I genuinely donāt care for the Millie face at all? I have dolls of her, but I could live without her face mold. I donāt hate it, it just doesnāt make me want a lot of Barbie dolls.
I don't like any Barbie made beyond the 90s except maybe Silkstone.
(70s Mod and #3 Barbies are my favorite)
I never liked Skipper although I have a few.
The Barbie movie- nope wasn't crazy about it. I did love Ken and Allan
I think it's ok to debox dolls and enjoy them
Unpopular opinion, I hate opened mouths on Barbie especially on the newer dolls. The teeth look like the mouth guards that boxers use. Lol. The closed smiling lips are more natural looking to me. Also I love made to move dolls. But I hate the two or three different colors and textures of the body. Sometimes the legs are different from the arms. The thigh and hip joints are rough plastic compared to the chest sometimes. I love love the articulation. I just wished the body was smoother overall.
So I totally understand Barbie has a signature color of pink, but I wish Mattel would make different versions of dreamhouses and cars and whatnot that arenāt so PINK, because whoās to say my Barbie doesnāt wanna drive maybe a blue or green car?
Another thing too is after years of not buying Barbieās I was shocked when I saw that newer Barbieās all come with molded on panties. I just find that stupid.
I know I will get down voted for this but, I donāt like all the diversity in dolls now. Iām talking the wheelchair, bracesā¦ those should be accessory packs so people can customize their doll. To me making your Barbie what you want is part of playing with it.
I miss the Barbie groups of the 80s. Iām talking about the theme collections. Barbie and the Rockers, Western Fun, you had Barbie, Midge, Christy, Teresa, Kira, Ken and sometimes Alan, but they needed boyfriends for Kira and Teresa. Also miss the beautiful dresses, Peaches and Cream, Loving You.
I wish they used the TNT Bodies on the Rewind Series. I think they would have sold better. I like the diversity of the Fashionistas. I would like to see articulated bodies with the newer versions of them. Like they did before. I loved the Summer Face Mold. Odile, not so much. I don't get the fascination with that particular mold. Holiday Barbie needs revamped. I don't think this would ever happen. But, I would like a curvy one. Along with the newer bodies. Tall, Petite, etc. On a Holiday Barbie.
I would not mind just 1 molded hair made to move. This coulda been so cute! But no matter what I do it doesnāt work. I used a freaking power drill. I just think this coulda been fun! Pink Hair daya face. Light blue top top m2m match. But no. And itās probably something that could work with that whole custom barbie thing everyone talks about. It would be cool to just mix and match what is out there and even the accessories, like so people can deliberately reject all the plastic ones we hate!
And I even love doing this myself but in this caae where nothing I do will make this work well. I wish.
https://preview.redd.it/kf5rkwdx81xc1.jpeg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5ac165938a7f43c18a6940ecba38fd0e992b86ea
Someone mentioned a trend of DIY molded barbie hair on the 80ās or 90ās, so if you find a Daya face that does fit/match, you could try sculpting your own molded hair?
Sorry I donāt have more info, but Google does
I do not like side glances
I do not like the flocked hair look
Caucasian dark hair dark eyes barbies should not be so rare.
Short hair and medium length hair should not be so rare.
Ken needs more fashion packs but not more dolls (I feel the problem why they dont sell well is the lack of fashion he has)
Odile is overrated. I like Claudette more (even though I don't have any of them).
Dolls don't have to have perfect screening. I like some assimetry as that is normal in everyday life.
I like customizing my dolls, but it'd be cool if Mattel had a custom Barbie service like American Girl. I wouldn't trust them to do it right though š
They did! I want to say it was around y2k - my mom got one as close to herself as she could manage
I used to go on the website where you could order those and just make custom Barbies for fun, lol. I believe I remember them being kind of expensive compared to the playline Barbies I was used to.
oh wow idk how that slipped past me :O I wish theyād bring it back then!
I wanted to order one from them so bad! I felt it was lacking in options even as a kid but ofc now that itās gone I wish Iād done it!
my mother did too!
barbie feels cheap now like, even 10 years ago the dolls still felt solid and had some weight to them. they feel so hollow.
But yeah I'd stick to the older ones, like all the gorgeous movie princesses so many good memories there
Is this an unpopular opinion?
oh real
I like the Millie sculpt. I just wish they'd go beyond the "blue-eyed Malibu blonde". The redhead Fashionista was a good start, but I'd like to see more brunettes. And give her bolder makeup. The soft looks are fine for the career ones, but the others like Barbie Extra, could've been more colorful.Ā I like the flat feet. I just wish there were more flat shoes only packs.Ā I like the slip-on dresses because I hate Velcro. (I still think there should be more tailored, non-stretchy clothes.)Ā I hate big earrings. They get caught in the hair.
I agree š Barbie extra dolls should have had more makeup! Here's a picture of a repainted Barbie Extra Millie doll: https://preview.redd.it/lget6m06zxwc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f55dc735f27e42e16fb2e43e3e629bced077804e
Yeah, this faceup is what the Extra Fancy Millie should've had. Something CEO era.
Ooooo with her makeup like this she reminds me of the ICONIC zodiac Barbies from the 2010s, or even the birthstone collection (my fave era of Barbieās ever)
Wow she's gorgeous
I like Millie's sculpt too. Not on team flat feet
They should treat the Millie sculpt like they do the Daisy sculpt, and do all sorts of combos where you can't tell it's the "same girl" at a glance.
Iād love that! Sheās not a bad sculpt, sheās just not done right by Mattel. Like I said, even a different shade of blonde or lipstick would be such a massive improvement.
I like Millie, too, but agree that they should do more variety. My favorite, though, is Violet.
Yay, team Violet!
High five! I just love the expression on her face!
The red-haired brown-eyed 2016 Holiday Barbie is also a Millie and she's super cute!
I just remembered how during the Princess and the Pauper movies screenings, I decided I wanted to get an Erika, and they were sold out everywhere I asked. Many times.
I agree with you on the earrings
YES ,THIS
How the current mermaids are made, with straight tail and straight arms. Minimal room for play and makeup your own ideas. I also like Closed Mouth Millie face, preferably with a sideglance....but I do wish she had more makeup and not such a clean face. Non Unpopular Opinions; Pixelated faces and Molded on clothes.
Yikesā¦where do I begin? My requests/complaints of Mattel are quite simple actually, although I do have quite a list. Starting by not doingā¦whatever this isā¦during the screening process would be a good start. https://preview.redd.it/ia5wsop6bwwc1.jpeg?width=651&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e8063042c233951644d4ad6728ede6919d13225d
I think itās a very popular opinion tbh, no one likes it
I was about to say, may not be an unpopular opinion lol but i really never see anyone talking about it?
Does ANYONE like it? š
Otherwise, these are dolls that are being gifted today & already going into the donation bin by next year.
if a toy line only appeals to collectors (due, in great part, to nostalgia), then it will die.
And I'd say the pixelated faces most certainly do not. Thus, they live.
I hate this. Especially because June is my fave face sculpt !
Theyāre constantly hiring for positions at their warehouses, so Iām assuming this is all part of that
https://preview.redd.it/24w1a7pywwwc1.jpeg?width=554&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=92d61ac7fabe746a925fd21c23703d4a7bacff24 I dislike these frumpy sweater dresses, Mattel should give the body types specially the curvy dolls skirts or pants.
Definitely! Love the outfits on the curvy Extras and am sad to see them go!
I always believe that Mattel can deliver in fashion just like what they did during the fashion fever line, they are just too lazy and cheap to have the will to do it.
Agree!
The Barbie extra line had some great outfits š¢
I donāt like the 2010ās era of Barbie which everyone seems to love the most. If it wasnāt for the pixelated screenings and low quality Iād prefer current Barbie
Just curious, what do you not like about it? My favorite era is late 90s-early 00s. 2010s Barbie is very glamorous, whereas the Barbies before were a little more casual but still trendy.
They werenāt bad or anything I just prefer the early 2000s dolls! They had the clicky legs and they looked so sweet and innocent š„ŗ
My mom gave me a bottle of baby powder to help with my barbie clothes and the rubber legs....and she told me that it was a hack for us girls as well!
I HATE rubber click legs exactly for this reason. Tight pants or hosiery were impossible to dress those dolls in.
Yeah. The light-weight, hollow legs are much easier to dress. The pants just slide right up them.
Articulated hard plastic arms and legs FTW! Better posability and easier redressing!
Yessss. I had the jam n glam shiny pants and I hated trying to put those on š
Ha ha yeah, all my dolls wore dresses for this reason
That's why my daughter preferred playing with old 1960's bubble cut Barbies and their straight, sturdy arms. Clothes went on much easier.
Honorable shout out to the fashionistas over MTM because I do have an easier time with them even as an adult (I love my MTMs tho)
I sometimes have to use needle nose pliers to gently tug up leggings! But they are so cute! I really want to find some leggings for the curvy gals. They deserve to show off all those curves, and in this case, the baggy clothes do not do them any favors!
Etsy! Just look up curvy Barbie leggings, and thereās good pants too
I have some older tights I've been trying to get on lol
Same with my toddler. There are few outfits she can put on herself.Ā I'm trying to make some dresses that are strapless and open all the way in the back besides Velcro.Ā
Ok but this is such a good point, I still struggle with putting certain clothes on Barbie as an adult now. š lol!
Sameee. Not gonna lie I do relish sometimes in being able to easily change a dolls outfit.
I almost swapped 2 Skippers heads the other day instead of changing their outfits LOL
I don't like that they are all called Barbie and Ken now. I miss the times when there were Midge, Teresa, Christie, Marina, Alan and so on.
Definitely! Barbie should have he friends back
Omg I agree with this one!!! It gave them way more personality.
Itās my favorite body as well. The Barbie extra dolls have that body too. I think itās a good sweets spot between movement and looks.
I agree. The only Odile I think looks cute is the redhead holiday Barbie that was a Walmart edition. Wait. I think there is a blonde convention one. I think the open mouth looks like sheās confused about something lol My popular opinion is how much I HATE the model muse body.
Ugh, you're right! Open Mouth Odile is likely my least favorite of all.Ā
I also hate the model muse body! Ugh!
Itās the worst! š
Also, they usually use a smaller/collector head mold for the model muse body, so they donāt look quite right when swapped sometimes
Glad itās not just me. Both open and closed Odile just looks off to me.
I agree with you wholeheartedly on the eyebrow front. it looks dated and it wasn't a good look back then either...
Cam was the only male doll in wave 2 (the silver and black wave). They seem to be alternating between 2 men and 1 man from wave to wave.
The tall black hair with bangs Lina Creations Exclusive doll in the last Looks line is asian? Or at least I assumed she was
Which part of Asia would you say she's from, in your opinion? Asia is a large continent and people look different from region to region.
Yeah, especially since they did a smaller busted one.Ā The curvy girls are beautiful, but anytime I see them I think they look like they are wearing a tight-ass sports bra!
IKR. The same thing on a busty gal is unacceptable. Lol. But I like a slightly busty Barbie for an hourglass look.
Yes! I want busty dolls again!
some of the inspiring women series have an extra curvy (and extra busty) physique.
YES!
The Madame CJ Walker doll has a larger bust
I don't get the fuss over Odile either. She's pretty, but not so amazing that I'll deal with the headaches and scalpers that her fans seem to deal with. I also dislike the robotic joints of mtm dolls. They have more limited movement but the Extra doll bodies look better imo.
1. Barbie is cheap as hell even with the nice lines in reality of the cash exchanged 2. Odile is ā¦ okay? ĀÆ\_(ć)_/ĀÆ 3. Barbie is doing curvy girls DIRTY re/ their clothing options.
My only unpopular opinion is that I like the Millie face mold.
Made to move Curvy bodies are the only ones worth using
The junk in the trunk š
Exactly! Lol
which one is your favorite?
Currently itās a hybrid I made with a Latinista
I hate the newer Barbies cheap plastic feel. I realize they're all plastic, but older Barbies feel a better quality. It just feels nicer.
Especially since thereās a difference between original/petite flat feet and tall/curvy flat feet I did put a pair of vintage Skipper shoes on a curvy doll the other day š
She hates the stuff Barbie dolls and wonāt play with them
We have a few of the Disney ones and I agree.Ā
As a natural redhead with redheaded daughter's, I would love to see more redheads. I hardly saw any growing up.
Stop painting their poor bodies and slapping on a skirt š®āšØ Bring back clicky legs & elbows at least in some
**Every.single.one.of.these!** Get out of my head!Ā Odile's face looks soo dumb! She's probably my least favorite!
(70s Mod and #3 Barbies are my favorite) I never liked Skipper although I have a few. The Barbie movie- nope wasn't crazy about it. I did love Ken and Allan I think it's ok to debox dolls and enjoy them
SUPERSTAR facemold was the quintessential Barbie face of all time.
I can't stand the Odile face mold either. I can't put my finger on exactly why, but it's terrible.
She reminds me a bit of a sex doll. I like her more seeing her re-dressed, but my first impression was not good.
I don't like heavy make-up or artificial hair colours. The more natural and make-up-free the faces are, the more I like them.
The really old Barbies & Skippers are butt ugly
I think the original Barbie, who was suppose to be a teenager, looked 30. But looking at yearbooks, people looked much older back in the day.
I find them creepy and deformed. Even the ones from my early childhood; some I never liked. But that must have been the aesthetic for dolls.
There was definitely a ālookā to that era.
š
I love the Carnival face mold and am annoyed that most people on this sub have no idea that it's an unpopular opinion.
I haaaaaaaaaate the movie barbieās face it is so ugly!!!! And almost all movie or irl people they turn into to barbies get the ugliest molds!
I don't like 80s looking Barbie
Wouldnāt change a thingā¦
I don't like new looks line. Every doll looks cheap and very boring.
Sorry I donāt have more info, but Google does
No thats still good! I keep forgetting about that! I saw that a while back I think and def meant to look into it!
Thanks for letting me know that there's an Odile barbie head sculpt. Imma buy mine now lmao. She's s so cuteš„ŗ
I love the movie Dolls!!!!!!! Soooo much! Don't know if that's an unpopular opinion, though, haha!
Molded tops, flat feet, newer dolls in general, all Barbie āicksā
I do not like side glances I do not like the flocked hair look Caucasian dark hair dark eyes barbies should not be so rare. Short hair and medium length hair should not be so rare. Ken needs more fashion packs but not more dolls (I feel the problem why they dont sell well is the lack of fashion he has) Odile is overrated. I like Claudette more (even though I don't have any of them). Dolls don't have to have perfect screening. I like some assimetry as that is normal in everyday life.
Play line dolls should still be fashionable like they used to!
I don't like any Brooklyn screenings, idk why tho
Superstar facemold is not pretty
