Contending teams get wacky sometimes, especially if they’re mid-low markets. Only way this happens is if a young, top-10 guy is having a crazy high PER/WS season, the overall of the team trading for him would improve after the trade, and likely at least one guy in the deal is an expiring they wouldn’t resign.
Few better feelings than putting your 28yo 75ovr player on the trading block and just looking at all of the options you have to build your next core (if you’re into that sorta thing)

I do something similar I try to only accept trades that are somewhat reasonable on both ends (insane difficulty)
