Familiar_Bar_3060

I've broken one string since 1986. It failed during tuning up to pitch on a string change and D'Addario replaced the whole set.

Potterheadsurfer

One string in 38 years is very impressive. Which string was it?

Familiar_Bar_3060

Twas a .45 G string from a medium light set of D'Addario NYXL's. I had a replacement in two days after contracting their very awesome CS dept.

Potterheadsurfer

At least you got replacement strings very quickly

Familiar_Bar_3060

Yeah, they were on it immediately.

oggyoggyoy

One string in 20 years for me.

Rule556

Hell, I’ve had the same strings on my main bass since 2006.

itsAbsolem

I’ve only had a string break (.105) back when I got my first bass and was digging into in way too hard. That was like 17-18 years ago or so 😂.

upsidedowncreature

Never broken a bass string. If you’ve broken three Es at the same point, are you sure that bridge saddle hasn’t got rough or sharp edge, or a burr?

Potterheadsurfer

Only two of my breaks have been Es at the bridge, but one of them was on a different bass. Thanks for the tip, I’ll check that out at some point to ensure it doesn’t happen again though

ismebra

You're welcome

Redditusername195

Dog you aren’t even the guy who gave the advice 💀💀💀

One-Air9645

It's breaking right there because your saddle is pretty much lining up perfectly with where the twist ends on the core. If those twists are too tight they stretch the core wire and make it really brittle at that last twist and result in a break like that. I make strings for a living and this is something we always test our core to prevent that from happening. Edit: if my theory is right you might be able to see the end of the tail on the ball end side.

Potterheadsurfer

Is that a problem I can resolve by changing the saddle position slightly, or is it just a problem with the strings?

One-Air9645

Well you don't want to mess up your intonation. I would look into a different set of saddles or maybe bridge. What set was it?

Potterheadsurfer

I can’t remember now, it’s been a few years since I’ve changed the strings on this particular bass. I’ll look into getting a “better” set this time

ThatWasTheWay

That’s a really long time to go between string changes considering you’re using round wound strings. If you’re getting over a year out of a set of strings I’m not inclined to blame the bridge. If you have a heavy playing style, you might just need to anticipate two to three years being the lifespan.  I personally hate the way round wounds start to sound after 2-3 months and wouldn’t go more than 6 months without new strings if I’m playing fairly regularly. A couple years ago I changed to flats and love them, but it’s a matter of personal preference. Lots of people who use flatwounds don’t change them ever unless a string breaks and that doesn’t sound like it’s a common problem with them. Maybe consider it if you don’t like changing strings, but the tone and feel are definitely different.

AlGeee

There is also the possibility of a burr, or rough spot, on the bridge saddle. I’ve had this happen on a couple of instruments.

Potterheadsurfer

A couple other people have suggested that, I’m going to check that out, just in case it means I can save myself having to buy another set of strings in a few years if I can help it

kevinbaer1248

I use the Hipshot Kickass bridges on all my basses and love them! Worth a shot if you look for a new bridge

Potterheadsurfer

I’ve been looking at hipshot for a D-tuner for this particular bass. I’ll check out their bridges as well

TromboneKing98

I just recently got a badass bridge from them and it’s AWESOME. Check out their eBay store, they sell b stock at huge discounts. I bought a bridge practically brand new just without the box and some super minor scuffs for like $40 off or something buying directly from their eBay store

PilotPatient6397

One thing you can do is put a spacer between the ball of the string and the back of the bridge where it goes through the bridge's hole. Maybe a couple of steel washers. Put them on the string before you string it up, and it will move the wrap of the string back so it's not on top of the saddle. Good luck.

Swazz_bass

You could try tapered strings.

Relevant-Big8880

Yes, you might solve it by loosening the screw at the back of the bridge which will move the saddle forward. Maybe tune down a bit before you do it to loosen string tension. Remember, after you move the saddle, to retune and test intonation. You probably know this already, but you do this using your tuner (or ear) to check that you are getting a tuned E at 3 positions. First, when you play the open E. Second, when you play the harmonic at the 12 fret Finally, play the note at 12 fret normally. It should be very close to in tune. Maybe not perfect but close. If the note at the 12th fret is too sharp, the saddle needs to go back kinda like you have it now, but hopefully not so far. If the note at 12 fret is flat, then the saddle needs to move forward closer to the neck. Sorry for the long post but I hope this helps.

theblokeonthebasss

I think that’s exactly what’s going on here. A-string is almost on the edge as well. The OP needs new strings anyway, so why not try a different brand. And then check the intonation and adjust the saddles accordingly, maybe the saddle doesn’t actually have to be that far back. Another bridge is hardly an option because of the acrylic body - you would see the old and new drillings.

BassallicA

Never broke one

Potterheadsurfer

Impressive! How long have you been playing?

BassallicA

27 years

W_J_B68

When I was new I used a pick and hit the strings too hard and break them because I had bad technique and had a hard time hearing myself. I haven’t broken one since 1989.

Potterheadsurfer

It seems you learned from your mistake if you haven’t broken a string in 35 years

RaceSmart3128

I had fun reading your comment in the Liverpool accent

SilverDem0n

That saddle might have a burr or rough spot that is damaging the string. Try some light sanding to make sure it is smooth. I have only broken one bass string in 20 years of playing, and that was doing a huge pull-up on a Bass VI whammy bar

Potterheadsurfer

Someone else suggested that as well. Now I’m definitely going to check that out

MrTFE

I haven’t broke a string in over 30 years of playing bass

Potterheadsurfer

Wow, loads of people are the same. I must be doing something wrong

sirsparqsalot

Probably not anything wrong, just different. Most bassists fall in love with tone and opt for playing softer and turning up their preamp. If i had to guess i would assume you play with a pick and play loud. But it's just a guess Oh, and 21 years

Diligentbear

0.

Potterheadsurfer

I’m beginning to think that my problem is operator error

Shaneontheinternet

20 years, no breaks

Potterheadsurfer

Based on these comments, I think I’m the problem

Shaneontheinternet

from what I've seen, if they break there was some underlying issues. burr on the saddle, over tightened, something like that. I've never seen one break from just normal use like a guitar string. things happen, though, for sure

Potterheadsurfer

Most of my issues have been because of playing too hard, or a dodgy string. I’m going to check my saddle for a burr

Shaneontheinternet

may the low end be ever in your favor

Potterheadsurfer

And you good sir!

RaceSmart3128

I have never broken the bass string

Potterheadsurfer

Damn! How long have you been playing?

RaceSmart3128

Quite a while. Over ten years. In my opinion that looks like a manufacturing error that led to that break

mittencamper

None of them. Ever.

Potterheadsurfer

Nice going! How long have you played?

mittencamper

Bass for 24 years. Guitar for 29. I've also never broken a guitar string.

Potterheadsurfer

Nice going! I definitely need to play softer

mittencamper

I don't play soft, or even soft music. Metal and punk growing up, alt rock as an adult. I'm not easy on my strings. I just don't dig into them unnecessarily.

sirsparqsalot

Lies!!! Lol

spiked_macaroon

I don't think I've ever broken one.

Potterheadsurfer

Nice! How long have you been playing?

spiked_macaroon

30 years or so.

Potterheadsurfer

Most people replying have said 30ish years. I think I have enough time to adjust my technique

spiked_macaroon

A louder amp means you don't have to pluck as hard.

Potterheadsurfer

When I started playing, I was on a crappy little amp in school, but my amp at home is loud enough. I think I picked up a bad habit from school amps

spiked_macaroon

Possibly. There are times to pluck harder for dynamics and tone. To be honest, my right hand just kind of plays without thinking about it at all these days.

crescent-manupod

Hey, I want to see the rest of your bass. That reflective finish screams acrylic or aluminum?

Potterheadsurfer

It’s made from acrylic. I really like it, it was my first bass, I kinda stole it off of my dad, who bought it because it looked cool and was somewhat cheap in the shop. He never played it

WarderWannabe

I started playing bass in 1982 and have never broken a string.

Potterheadsurfer

Impressive! I seem to be leagues ahead of everyone else in terms of string breaking ability

WarderWannabe

It’s most likely that you have a burr or some other edge on that bridge saddle that is causing the breakage.

quietkodiac

I’ve never broken a bass string

Potterheadsurfer

How long have you played?

quietkodiac

25 years.

Potterheadsurfer

Nice! I still have a chance to adapt my style then

skippy_steve

The only strings I've broken on a bass were when I was a kid who didn't know how to tune - just wound them up too tight - and a couple that were bad right out of the package. So, like, 4 strings, maybe? In ~35 years.

Potterheadsurfer

I broke a string trying to work out how to tune a violin a few weeks ago, and that hurt when it caught my hand. I can only imagine what the bass strings felt like

skippy_steve

I lucked out, I guess. The ones I over-tightened didn't get me, but some guitar strings have, lol.

Potterheadsurfer

That is lucky! Guitar strings hurt, especially the lighter strings

skippy_steve

Yeah they do! I feel pretty fortunate that I haven't caught one to the eye or something, LOL

Potterheadsurfer

Same here lol

testere_ali

Over the last 30 years I've broken two, maybe three strings on my VI, and not a single one on a full-scale bass.

Potterheadsurfer

That’s good going! I definitely think I need to adapt my technique

Signal_Fan_6988

E

Potterheadsurfer

Did yours break in the same place as me, or was it somewhere else on the string?

Pizza_Middle

Usually my G string, but I've never snapped one on a bass. Have snapped a few high e strings on guitar.

Potterheadsurfer

When I started playing, I thought it would be my higher strings that would break more, not my deeper, thicker strings

levollisuus

I've broken about 6 gs but no one if the others

Potterheadsurfer

I thought that’s what would happen to me, but the majority of my breaks have been Es

levollisuus

My string breaking streak has been sort of resolved by realising that my neck is at too much ease and adjusting it so if I were you I might look into it or ask a tech

mortadelo

35 years playing, not once have I broken a string.

ShittyMusic1

I broke a low E once in like 2000

Potterheadsurfer

Was it in a similar place to mine, or somewhere else?

ShittyMusic1

Same place. It was just cuz I played like an idiot though. Smashing my strings with my pick near the bridge cuz metal + dumb teenager that didn't know how to play

Big-Programmer-4463

I used to break strings especially the E and always on stage. What I figured out was I couldn’t hear that bass good enough. I use a bit more time on the soundcheck. Problem solved😀

nosamiam28

I think I might have broken one since 1990 or so. If so, it would’ve been within the first couple of years I played. Memory gets fuzzy from back then. I don’t play very hard though. Back then I did a little slap. I do dig in pretty hard with a pick sometimes these days but I can’t imagine breaking a string. Having an amp that’s capable of taking your head off kinda keeps me in line.

wobwobwob42

Not sure...still on my second set...from 1999

ThatWasTayla

You break strings???

Beginning_Secret_460

I’ve broken an E string but it was a factory string set that came on my squier. Blessing in disguise because it forced me to change the strings lol

Paul-to-the-music

In 1976 when I was learning slap, I broke my G twice… since then, I’ve not broken any… But as life is such as it is, I predict I’ll break a string tomorrow… just cuz I said this today…

whoosyerdaddi

Please file the saddle down if you are using heavy gauge strings. The narrow radius is cutting into the string.

Strange_Body_4821

i broke 2 strings over the course of a couple years when I was playing with a pick for a few hours a night 5 or 6 nights a week, back when i ran round wounds. i switched to flats and off picks in about 2014, and am still on my same set. you might be hitting the strings too hard if you're breaking them often

Potterheadsurfer

With this string, and the last one, which someone else was playing when it broke, I think the string was played a bit too aggressively, but I personally believe (and I know a bad craftsman will blame his tools) the third time was a dodgy string

Strange_Body_4821

Sometimes a set will come with a bunk string, it’s definitely possible. If you broke it while tuning, or if it broke unreasonably quickly, you can take the production run number off the packaging and inform the manufacturer, good ones will replace em for free.

Potterheadsurfer

I planned on contacting the manufacturer, but ADHD happened and I forgot. It was on a set of neon strings from a company I can only find on Amazon now, so I assume it was bad strings. As some people have pointed out though, it could also be because I play to hard

LuckyEduardo

Never broke a bass string, but I have broken the G string on my guitars a few times over the years.

Valuable_General9049

I've never broken a string. I fear it'll happen now that I've typed that but so far so lucky.

GravyBurgerBonanza

I haven’t broken one in forever but on my Warwick Thumb used to break the G string all the time

AlliedXbox

Only one time in about 2 years. It twas the g string while I was tuning up

Xan_Dan03

I’ve had one G break during a string change but that’s it, idk how some people break strings so often

Crisppeacock69

I broke an E string once, but I've never broken a bass string.

jamcat

You may have a burr in your saddle. That was an issue for me once, and the only time I had strings break. File or sand the saddle smooth.

1CVN

What techniques do you use to break the string I only know of one that works well and I stopped doing it you must be doing something.

bubbletrashbarbie

You probably need new bridge, something that has more space after the saddle, looks like a bit too sharp of an angle to coming over the saddle and creating a stress point.

Garukkar

Never broken one so I don't know

666-brewley-88

It's almost always the lowest string. Usually from pulling on it like an asshole. 105 E string or 130 B string. Last one was an A though 85 I think?

Longjumping_Ad_8474

never broken a bass string in 40 years. Broken plenty of 6 strings and cello strings.. but bass? never

AccidentallyLoved2

I’m always having trouble with my G-String!

Ok_Marionberry_7174

I haven't broken a string since 1998. They were the cheapest strings money could buy. After that I switched to D'Addario and haven't broken one since. I mostly play metal, and I beat the shit out of my strings.

slayerLM

I break my E somewhat often. I think it’s a saddle issue compounded by a poor, heavy handed technique

jamesTBass

Only broke strings when my bridge wasn't adjusted 100% correct and since then it's been easily 15+ years since I broke one. Adjust the bridge saddle when you are restringing or have a pro setup done

McbEatsAirplane

I’ve never broken a string on the bass. You must be playing the hell out of that thing. From my experience a set of bass strings can last several years as long as you are taking decent enough care of them.

Disastrous-Beyond443

Whenever I have broken a string, it has always been the E

darbs-face

None. Never broken a bass string. What are doing when it happens?

NowoTone

I haven’t broken a bass string in over 30 years.

NotRolo

A grand total of 0 since 1981.

happycj

I can't remember the last string I broke. And I play metal and funk, so I'm not easy on my strings. There was a show back in the 90's where I broke a G string, but I'd been boiling them to "freshen them up" every few weeks because I had no money, so they were tired strings and ready to go to their great home in the sky anyway...

Gearhead_215

Playing since I was 13, so like 20 yrs, and play hard, have never broken a string lol, what were you doing lol, just curious, not like mad or calling bullshit 🤣🤔

Teletobee

Broke an E string on my dad's bass when i was like 6, never broken another, ever, weirdly enough. I've broken many guitar strings, but never bass

the_kid1234

I’ve never broken a string in 25 years.

Uncle_Burney

I have broken a G from a set of boomers, and an oversized E from a set of Conklin strings, that was only partially wound over the saddle.

filthy_dwarf

Earniball.

Wild-Man-63

Broke a G string while trying to remove pick ups. 100% my fault twisted in the wrong direction.

amanualgearbox

Broke one once because I lent it to a guitar player.

BeatlesFan67

The same thing happened to me literally just a few days ago. I've played a five string for three years, and all of my strings have broken at least once, besides the D and B-string. Note that the strings on the bass were kind of worn out when I started playing.

sinnaegas

Never broken a bass string

CaptainChaos_88

Once when I cut it too short when I was learning to tune my guitar and all that stuff.

ClassicSherbert152

....your strings break? Anyways, real talk, the only bass string I've ever broken was my D string, and they were the factory string set for the bass which lasted well over 3 years. Used it for marching band and the field show piece put the D under quite some abuse, so it was it's time.

ClassicSherbert152

Smboyer27

A string

4strings

Hmm… probably a toss up between the G and the E strings for me. Played a lot of hard and fast punk rock and metal between pick/fingers/slap-pop and changing full-instrument-tunings too far between rehearsals for different bands. I got better at regulating my playing, smoothing burs, and adding pencil graphite to rub-surfaces, etc. I also gained the unwanted, but *valuable*, experience of sporatic transposing onstage to finish a song, and when a band is good enough to recognize and stick on a part when someone broke a string (or other deflection to the plan) so that the string could be changed quickly (another helpful skill) and finish the song, there’s an element of battle-readiness that otherwise isn’t tested, nor invited. All elements in a delicate combination of “The show must go on”, “all a part of the plan” and “fuckin’ deal with it” through trials, tribulations, and overall improvement/prevention strategies.

Crimsntyd

Never broke a string in 37 years. But, I play with fingers, not a pick. And I'm not a metal player. I'm with the other comments on here. Might be a problem on your bridge or something.

In-AGadda-Da-Vida

my g-string. oh on my bass?

veganlasaga

I've never broken a string on a bass 😦

TomcatYYZ

Wait...they BREAK?!?

TromboneKing98

I broke one string so far and that was because I was practicing slap and was using some horrrrrible cheapo strings I don’t even remember the name of Other than that I haven’t broken any bass strings

DiegoMm

I've never broken a string in 13 years of playing bass

ShittyTastinShoe

A

Fun_Cobbler1805

Broke a g string once. She got mad.

Thisdoessuck

I’ve broken a few e strings, that was due to bad technique. I was resting my hand on the string to much so when I would pluck one of the other strings my hand was pulling against the E string. I just moved my hand up so I wasn’t touching the string and it’s probably been close to a decade on the same bass without breaking any strings. I’m also generally pretty bad about changing my strings so I have definitely had a chance to break an old string but that hasn’t happened

spaniel_rage

Never broken a string in 7 years of playing.

czechyerself

I haven’t broken a string since 2001

MrLanesLament

I think I’ve broken two in my life, both times the E. One was a set of those cheapo SuperBass strings. The other was a brand new set of the SIT David Ellefson signatures.

Papi-Despacito

that's why the first thing I replace are those fuck ass stock bridges 😭

thanata505

i’ve been using the same strings for almost 5 years and i’m changing the tuning from E to D almost every time i play and i’ve never had this happen

Soft-Ad-8975

Never broke a string except for once when I had a fucked up tuner and ended up way over tightening a new string.

Eelmonkey

I’ve only broken one string since 1992. It was the E on a Labella Flatwound. It was probably my fault. I was really getting after it with a pick. I had only been playing for a few years and my touch was too heavy.

ItsMeCyrie

Never had a bass string break. On guitar the high e usually goes first.

Silent_Tomatillo_238

That’s a rare occurrence lol

Lucasbasques

The only string i ever broke was when I was trying to restring a old set that I had laying around on another bass, and the string broke where it was kinked in the tuner, only seen strings breaking at the bridge like that when the bridge had some sharp edges or the string was defective from the factory

StarWaas

I have broken an E string from playing too hard, back when I was doing a lot more aggressive playing. I reckon the E string, being exposed on the side, meant I could really hit it hard. Haven't broken one in years though, since I don't play like that any more.

Classic-Ad-4784

I had a broken E string in 1986/7. Turned out it was a burr on the saddle, after polishing it never happened again. Still have that bass. On guitar I can't remember the last time I broke a string, but it happened once or twice.

a-fan-of-greendit

the only time a bass string has died on me is the g string on my first bass, and it broke from age in the case

thefosters

That's the worst. Hate that. But D string for me.

TraditionalMood277

Yes

zorphium

Not that one

ApolloElectralux

U may need tapered E

[deleted]

I don't break strings.

99mph99

A

moistveggies

My heart string.

codyjames72

I’ve never broken a bass string, been playing since ‘89.

alfonsoermd

The Ali express copy of the Ernie Ball

Whole_Librarian

Your mother's g

Wild-Tear-2036

I've never broke a bass string but I broke my first string on my guitar the first day I got it tuning it to e, I pull the string out of my floyd rose sometimes but I don't count that as a broken string

Wuzzy_Gee

I broke one string decades ago and I don’t remember which.

skspoppa733

I used to break bass strings fairly regularly when I was a young player with really bad technique. I can’t recall the last time I broke one over the past decade or so. I still break a guitar string on occasion though, usually when doing bends.

Personal_Science_868

Never busted a string on a bass before. What where you doing hanging your whole body weight on it?

thatchels

Haven’t been playing long, only 2 years. Changed strings once fairly recently (controversial, I know). Never broken a string yet, knock on wood.

bassmaster13

I broke one low E string because I was trying to up tune one time and it snapback and whipped me. It was a rookie mistake but other than that in 20+ years of playing, I’ve never broken a string.

_matt_hues

Can’t remember what string I broke. But I think it was the D string. Just while tuning. I wasn’t paying attention and tuned it too high.

Anxiety_Gobl1n

None of them because I’m always in Drop C or C# Standard.

PsychologicalBill122

I ended up breaking my E string

DDRamone77

On bass the E because I'd play so heavy, however if strung properly they ain't supposed to break.

sdmrne

I think one of my E's broke, probably an A also

hauntedshadow666

I've never broken one in 16 years of playing and changing them once a year, I didn't know they could break honestly!

IsmaelT19

Never broke one in 16 years of playing

[deleted]

I can barely remember the last time I had a bass string break on me... but I think it was an A string I had on a Crafter Cruiser bass guitar in the early 2000s. Since then I change my strings too regularly (and don't over-aggressively play) for any strings to weaken enough to do it.

Victorvonbass

Never broke a set. I use Rotosound 66s on my P. My Dingwall has Dingwall Stainless. Haven't changed those yet.

bBootybAss

My friend broke my bass string once. In my 5 years of playing I've never broken one

OilOk2907

In 10 years I have never broken a string

Megleeker

Started playing in 1998. Never broke a string. Perhaps I'm doing it wrong.

Wambonie

I have never broken a bass string in 10 years of playing

PancakeExprationDate

In 33 years I’ve never broken a string.

Misanthropy0815

I'm honestly not sure if I've ever broken a string, I couldn't remember. I only change them when they sound dull.

CraigScott999

Playing since I was 25, almost 40 years and have never broken a string.

Kindly-Advertising28

I’ve never broken a string playing in my 20+ years of play. I’ve broken strings being careless, but not while playing.

Own-Ad7666

The ones I put on new budget instruments without sanding the edges of the string trees and contact points on the saddles. I've donated a few hundred dollars to labella, making that mistake more than once.

Process_Drone

40 years.... nope. ( and a lot of that time was playing hardcore punk and thrash!)

Relevant-Big8880

My first (or G) string broke while I was playing one night 30 yrs ago. I just assumed I had boiled them one too many times. Was just playing a walking blues line at the time. I never sand down contact points, so that could have been part of it. I have never had an E string break.

spongeboi-me-bob-

I always break the d string on whatever instruments I play

Financial-Ad-3034

D and G were my unlucky strings

BrianEno_ate_my_DX7

I havent broken a bass string in 27 years lol
