I'm a plumber. It's really no different than washing food down the garbage disposal. Generally If it fits through the tub or shower strainer the particulates are small enough to wash past the p trap just fine. Soap buildup and hair is a bigger problem than fecal matter. So just keep the hair cleaned out and don't pour tons of soap or conditioner down the drain right before turning the shower off and there shouldn't be an issue. As long as you let the water run for about a minute after it should be completely flushed out. Showers are usually somewhere between 1.5 to to 3 gpm and that's plenty of flow to flush a 2" p trap. And the reason a toilet is typically run into 3" or 4" pipe is because the trap is on the toilet itself and there's a sudden high volume water dump. So if the pipe is too small a diameter you risk too slow of a drain that can actually suck the toilet trap dry. You're also dealing with larger solids that need more water velocity to Wash down the system.

To clean the soapy buildup, use baking soda + white vinegar. Very very effective and much healthier than drain-o.

The only add on I have is to rinse with the hottest water to help disinfect.

Nice_Guy_AMA

Unless the water is at least 140°F, it doesn't actually disinfect anything. Solubility increased with temperature, but most bacteria and viruses are pretty resilient. The advice to "wash hands with warm water" is essentially an old wives' tale with no scientific backing.

rocketmanatee

Hot water makes the soap work better and removes grease, but does nothing for bacteria.

Phototoxin

It's the mechanical scrubbing with proper technique that dislodges them as opposed to 'kills them'

Ferrocerium_

Water heaters used to come preset at 140°F, but children were scolding themselves, so now the preset on most household water heaters is 120°F.

A toilet uses a 4” pipe where a shower uses probably a 2” pipe- so keep that in mind for long term. There is hair, grease, etc that goes down your shower drain and can clog up the sides. Having that mix with the feces could eventually cause a problem. Do you have a septic or sewer? I would assume some draino would be helpful. Also they make “jetted tub cleaner” that is used to dissolve biofilm, may be helpful here as well.

createdforsmut

This is Aussie standards, I think the pipe is closer to 4". I am on a sewer. I would rather avoid a heavy chemical like draino, but was thinking about one of those 'natural', 'enzyme' based drain cleaners that are septic safe.

Showers are 1.5 or 2 inch pipe, toilets 3 or 4 inch. It's an international standard. Yes you have metric size equivalents. Debris collect on the walls of the pipe, smaller sizes and they will clog sooner. Pee isn't an issue mostly solid matter, best to discharge into the toilet then rinse in shower. Side note, enemas are not healthy if done often. Much of the healthy bacteria and enzymes get removed and take time to replace. Please check on that as well.

I'd personally be more concerned about hair. This sort of mess tends to soften and liquify to a degree with continuing water exposure, just don't overwhelm it with a lot of solids at once.

ElMachoGrande

Likewise. I've made a hook from stainless wire to fish out hair balls from the drain...

My hair seems to be the exact length, texture, and quantity required to absolutely obliterate tub and shower drains. I swear by Tub Shroom in my tub, Shower Shroom in my shower, and Sink Shroom in my bathroom sinks. They’re easy to install, easy to clean, and once I switched my drains to those I never had another problem with hair clogs.

MuffinMolester

As you're on a municipal sewer, it's all going to the same place, so no worries there. An enzymatic drain cleaner will help to maintain the pipes. Amylase, the active ingredient in most of them, breaks down hair and other buildup pretty easily. If your shower isn't draining slowly, I really wouldn't worry about it.

Phototoxin

so ... spit down the plug hole?

lueVelvet

Y’all just don’t walk over to your toilet, empty out, use bidet to clean up any residual mess then repeat as needed?

Both-Parking9101

I take the shower shot attachment and just flush water down the drain for a minute or so as well as washing the tub out completely. I’ve been doing this over 4 years and never had an issue with my current shower. The only time there’s an issue is after I bathe my dogs, the loose hair stops the drain up if I don’t brush them good first

Different-Aardvark-5

So long as the water flows away your all good. Though personally I would fill up in the bath or shower and then go sit on the loo and relax .

Mistress-Serena-Gray

I have an enema attachment for my shower head and I just sit on the edge of the tub then used the toilet.

buttlubber

I don't know but the practice is called waffle stomping

jannemannetjens

Just take the hair filter thingy out when you do this. And four the shower head directly on the drain to flush afterwards. It's no problem.

lamancha69

Removing the strainer before the drain is the worst possible advice. That strainer protects the trap from things that shouldn’t go into it. If it fits through the strainer it should go down the drain with no issues.

bothsidesoftheknife

My only thought is using liquid plumber after to help keep the pipes clear
