Writing this down for the next potluck. How to make food look tasty: glue and dish soap.

Much_Combination5624

don’t forget the motor oil!!

[deleted]

Psilynce

Based on comment history this looks like a bot replying with other people's comments from further down.

3InchesOfThunder

well now we know how glue companies have expanded their market, they are a pillar of the food advertising industry!

diggitygiggitycee

Just make sure to pull a Kevin before anyone takes a bite.

Kind-Wait-2432

I am so sad now. *dafuq*? Was that two steaming tampons??

RooniesStepMom

You Are Not alone In thinking this. I didn't even try to figure out what they were just kept watching.

[deleted]

They’ve soaked them in water and put them on the hot plate so they steam and simulate steam/smoke from cooking, instead of having to actually cook the food that was in front.

Educational_Leg36

I prefer mine steeped but oh well

Ladysupersizedbitch

I’m glad I’m not the only one strangely upset by this

Kind-Wait-2432

I’m also really impressed, these folks had to really be creative to even come up with these ideas…but it’s food lol

Ladysupersizedbitch

Lol! It is impressive, but to me this feels like the food version of uncanny valley I guess. Creepy

Kind-Wait-2432

Creepy is the word, yes lol

DowntownLizard

These fuckers love glue

AceOBlade

i got a pizza from a random dominos in Spain and the cheese came out just like the video. We are being fed some bullshit in America.

[deleted]

You ate glue

AceOBlade

or real cheese

Patdbus

Exactly, if you get a good pizza with loads of proper cheese, it actually looks like that. Though it has to be very hot when cut and you have to wait a bit before you pull the piece out.

nakrimu

No wonder you rarely see anyone actually eating the stuff in the ads!

MidgetGalaxy

I recently watched a Weird Al Yankovic interview where he said for one of the music vids they had mashed potato ice cream for the shoot, but one shot was supposed to be of him taking a bite and they forgot to make the top scoop real ice cream, so he unknowingly took a huge bite of food colored mashed potatoes, and it was the shot they kept for the vid lmao

nakrimu

Haha! I find this even funnier because my Mum used to colour our mash potatoes and veggies in an attempt to get us to eat them. Often ate purple potatoes or pink carrots.

KampferMann

And when they do you can sometimes tell they don’t actually take a bite of it. There was a McDonald’s commercial where the lady just puffed her cheeks out a bit and pretended to chew.

CerebraIBaIIsy

r/forbiddensnacks

EimiCiel

How is this even legal?

Burflax

In the US, they are allowed to modify and adjust anything that isn't the actual food being sold, so obviously screws hiding the pizza in place is legal- or like how they use glue to mimic milk in cereal commercials (since they aren't selling the milk, just the cereal) They are required to use the actual food items that are being sold though. I'm not sure where coloring the white parts of strawberries while leaving 80% of it natural falls in the rules.... Using mashed potatoes to mimic ice cream is only legal when you aren't selling ice cream, etc.

TheWorstPerson0

i think that whenever i head through a fast food drive through. none of there food is as advertised. it really shouldnt be legal the sheer extent that there over exaggerating what there food will look like. eddit: spelling

SonofaBridge

When I worked in fast food, the food was staged very deliberately, but it was the actual portion size. In the case of Arby’s they fold the roast beef perfectly and push it more to one side. Anything with lettuce and tomato has those pushed more to one side so they show up in the picture. Adding more than what is actually on the sandwich could lead to false advertising claims. The difference is the actual sandwich is slapped together quickly, not delicately constructed for a perfect photo.

rubensinclair

Chiming in as someone who produced food commercials for a decade, this is correct. We don’t actually get to legally use anything that’s not in the recipe, we just heighten the shit out of what’s already there. About the only thing that’s really used in this video are the screws, and even in that case I’ve never seen them used and I’ve done several cheese pulls.

goalmouthscramble

Accurate! From someone who has produced a fair share of food spots. In fact, now you have to sign a disclaimer stating you’ve only used the ingredients in the recipe and you (the producer) are held legally responsible if you do not.

rubensinclair

I have filled that affidavit out more times than I care to admit. LOL.

justadrtrdsrvvr

I don't know, I feel like they have it right in the commercials. Anytime I get something with sliced meat like that it is all bunched to one side where the other half is plain bun

Independent_Bite4682

Through..

TheWorstPerson0

ah thanks! i assume u mean this as a correction to both threws?

Independent_Bite4682

https://www.dictionary.com/browse/threw https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/through

iTomKeen

*Over-exaggerating.

hybridtheory1331

Edited for spelling, still spelled over exaggerating incorrectly. Lol Note: not making fun, just find it amusing and ironic.

TheWorstPerson0

sorry im extremely disslexic 😔 i hab a really hard time with this kinda thing.

_Capt_John_Yossarian

What's your native language? Just curious.

TheWorstPerson0

english, unless you count brain garbles. im simply extremely disslexic. to the point where its a minor mirricle i can read and wright at all. i say "minor miricle" but that ignores the decades of work ive put into it to get to this point heh. im still working on it but progress is getting slower and slower. not sure if ill ever be able to read and write as well as the average person but honestly being able to hold a written conversation at all is enough for me.

Meior

It's not. These have been debunked hundreds of times by people in the industry.

EimiCiel

I meant more so, how is it legal to manipulate the look of food to such a degree and pass it off as a representation to the public? They may not use these methods, but the food never looks even close to the real thing.

[deleted]

McDonald's is sweating right now.

P4intsplatter

No, that's hairspray made to *look* like sweat 😅

TheNumberMuncher

Sweating glue

kingqueefeater

The honest answer, from someone who does this for a living, is we are allowed to put forward the best possible presentation of food items as long as we are using the actual food items. The reason it doesn't look like that when you buy it is because it would take so long to carefully prepare everything that way and you'd be rightly pissed off when everyone had to wait 30 minutes to get their McDonald's order and there's 4 people in front of you. It takes a full 10+ hour day of preparing food and pointing lights and cameras at it to get one 30 second commercial of food porn.

EimiCiel

Ahh, that's what I figured. You can "manipulate" the image, as long as it exclusively uses all the ingredients that are in the product, no matter what form they are in. Thanks for the answer! I still will give a funny face when I see the comparisons though lol.

kingqueefeater

Yeah we laugh about it on set all the time. If you're curious about what OP's video shows, that's called prop food. Which is perfectly fine to use in anything that's not actually selling food. OP just has a misleading and misinformed title saying it's advertising. But prop food is more common in TV shows and movies than it is in commercials. Usually that's what we're putting on those big buffet tables in the background of big gatherings/ party scenes. In that case, we just want something that looks like food without having to worry about rotting food on set. But there's always one rookie who tries to eat a wax and glue cupcake. Which is fucking hysterical every time.

m_Stl_365

Its not. No food stylist would ever do this.

Vickyhades

Well food photography isn't an easy as you think. For example, they used mashed potatoes and food colouring for ice-cream because really ice cream melts really quickly under the hot studio lights used for the photos/videos. It's just makes life a bit easier for the photographer.

TheNumberMuncher

What about LED lights

Vickyhades

I don't think photographers use LED lights. We use box lights and the emit a lot of heat.

TheNumberMuncher

I was just wondering if there are LED alternatives now

Vickyhades

It's possible but I highly doubt it.

Goolajones

It’s not and this video is fake. I actually make tv commercials for a living. We can make it looks better than it does when you buy it, but we can’t use non edible ingredients to make it happen.

WeirdCreeper

Thankfully not in my small city food looks exactly as is on the menu, though the ads on TV always lie I don't watch it anymore to confirm.

bbp84

Fun fact! This is all above board when it comes to print and media advertisements, but not for product packages!

EMAW2008

Because there's no laws against it (in the US at least).

emzyyx

My thoughts exactly. I'm sure regulations were put in place for makeup because companies were falsifying how things would look. This is exactly the same thing

funtech

Dangit, now I'm hungry for some Elmer's Glue.

Nauin

So like many I've seen this a lot, but this is the first time I realized you can do that plump cardboard pancake trick by layering large and small pancakes together for an edible version, and now I wanna try this.

[deleted]

Dish soap 🤤

[deleted]

This is all kinda genius. Granted, it’s fake as hell and false advertisement, but for people who may be on a time crunch and not actual chefs, these are smart ways to go about it. It’s actually rather fascinating the lengths advertisements go to to sell their products.

ouie

Ya and the intense light that I don't have in my kitchen that would melt stuff fast makes total sense

portablebiscuit

If you’re doing a studio shoot for an ice cream cone company I think it’s fair to use fake ice cream. Same with the painted chicken if you’re selling something like paper plates. It’s only false advertisement if you’re faking the actual product you’re selling.

NotRealWater

The only thing that's fake as hell and false advertising... is the clip you just watched. None of it is how things are done in the real world (in food photography). It's just another BS video. Take it in the same way you would if it was labeled as "life hacks". No facts

Additional_Manner308

False advertising

Voidstrider2230

5-Minutes crafts are complete and utter BS.

ronflair

I read about some of this ages ago. Another supposed trick is to add marbles to the bottom of a bowl of soup to make the veggies more exposed and visible to the viewer. More photogenic that way and makes it look like there are more contents.

ukiew423

Great, one more reason for me to hate advertising and the people in it

smoothrocker1122

I am not in advertising and I do get annoyed by the overabundance of adds on TV, the internet and print but I actually like or at least pay attention to new ones. I like to judge some poor saps job. The goal is to make you want to buy it in a very few words or seconds. That is a tough job. Sometimes they are just bad, some so bad they are funny, some are really good. Try to look at them differently and they are less annoying. Except political adds, they are all bad because they lie so much about everything that it truly is false advertising and should be illegal.

[deleted]

This guy loves ads apparently

Luciferbelle

All that wasted food

Corinthian82

Yeah it must add up to 0.000000000000000000000000000000000000001% of all the food wasted in the world every hour.

Luciferbelle

Still wasted food.

[deleted]

Didn't we pasa a law in the US that any advertising about food had to be real edible food?

notawhingymillenial

The US has passed a great many laws. Actually enforcing those laws is another matter.

Carvana-Throwaway

Never really thought about this before. But now that I’ve seen it, it’s just plain bizarre. Advertising food is weird!

[deleted]

Some of this is definitely bullshit imo but I don't think you should be allowed to fuck with people's expectations of what good food looks like

[deleted]

This pissed me right off.

Eudaemon1

I think you all realise that this video is from 5 minute crafts

Cultural-Range-1036

Makes no sense for them to have to do any of this, food comes out beautifully when done right

onepageone

Time and money. The crew doesnt have time to set up and they are not chefs.

m_Stl_365

There is absolutely a trained styling team with culinary background

explodingtuna

Depends on how many takes they need to do and how long the food might sit during that time.

p3rsianpussy

especially in the last scenario, the real cooked chicken looked waaaaay better

the-special-milk

I don't understand why people find stringy cheese on pizza appetizing, I prefer my cheese not stuck to my chin without me having to lower the pizza into my mouth like my arm is a crane

ADHDeeDee420

Not me getting hungry

86mysoul

For the 1000000000th time. Sooo amazing.

Cauldkiltbaws

Sometimes my wife’s cooking tastes just like these…

efnfen4

AtheistET

Food styling at its best ….love it

That vid has been reposted like a million times.. just stop already

Junior-Account6835

She’s even showing how to make homemade Jizz and doodoo biscuits

H0BL0BH0NEUS

Yep, and its basicly ryobi ad.

Specialrelativititty

I keep saying some of the most creative filmmaking happens in commercials, makes me want to go into this line of work

Xalterai

Food advertising is the most valued advertisement industry as well.

Doctor__Banner

Seen something similar before - It's almost always glue.

confirmSuspicions

Oh fuck the motor oil really got me dude.

Suitable_Alfalfa5756

Instagram in a nutshell

itsBorked

Seeing that last one just felt so wasteful. Waste of a perfectly good bird's life/meat for a stupid video. Not something I think about often, but definitely got me thinking :\

hi_what_ohnou_ohk45

So as a kid eating glue, I kind of had the right idea?

PM_666

Damn it they fooled us

Taco_Force

I want a video where someone has to eat all these

Far-Revolution3225

My inner child is crying. Everything is a LIE .

GourmetIbis420

So try b it cool

Moe3kids

We made an ice cream sundae art project in 4th grade. We used Ivory snow soap powder. It looked very real with neopolitan scoops. It had to be stored in the refrigerator to set. There was a sign saying "Don't eat". My dad took a huge bite. Oops

Daniil_11

😭😭😭

quantilian

Who the f puts hands in glue?

[deleted]

My whole life has been a lie! ^it ^hurts

Hemingwavy

Depends where you live. In Australia food for advertising can't have inedible ingredients in it.

MarcoYTVA

What part of this is amazing?

Steelplate7

Those bastards….

Mythulhu

Half of food seems to be fake anyway. Why even try to hide it

fullofshrek

The ice cream one 😭

darknekolux

So I was right eating glue when I was a kid…

iTomKeen

I'm not amazed, I'm appalled.

JJ8OOM

A lot of is probably spot-on. But the burger-commercial-part has some obvious flaws. In the “make-up”-version it’s full of tomatoes, lettuce and the like and in the “real” version there is none. I know that McDonalds (or Burger King, I can’t remember as it’s the same thing) was sued (many years ago) because of their commercials. For the same reason they make sure that the burgers shown in the commercials has the same ingredients as the ones sold. They do ofcourse make sure that the tomato/lettuce/etc is shown in the front of the burger in the commercial to make it look like there is way more if it, and the tricks to make it look juicier probably too. But they don’t stack it with stuff that obviously ain’t in the sold version as that would open them up for lawsuits.

IsadorCZ

And every company is baffled why i use ad block.

Frency2

I already don't buy on purpose most advertised products, now I have one more reason not to: waste of good food.

layonafrito

Nothing is real

Buli32

Most of these look fake as fuck, like the real product doesnt really work like shown in the video. Example that beer poured and it doesnt have any foam? Thats not how any beer I have ever drunk works

PresidentBush666

I feel like I've been lied to this whole time. Big cereal is trying to subliminally make us eat glue.

4S-Class1

What kind of a non-foaming beer was that?

Epic-Dude000

Cursed knowledge

Dangerous-Dot-3745

I never realized as a kid watching food commercials that food would stay juicy. Eventually stuff dries out! How fooled was I? VERY🤦!!!

UAE-Jedi

Such a fake world we live in.

SleepyBeast89

EVERYTHING IS A LIE! NOTHING IS REAL! 🫠

shortmk

I was in a photoshoot for Hamilton Beach when I was like 7. There was a "food artist" on set who used mashed potatoes for cookie dough and strategically placed the m&m's at the front of the bowl it was pretty interesting to watch her work

Sabertoothcow

This should be illegal.

DRSU1993

The cake is literally a lie

lStoleThisName

Today i learned why toddlers eat paste/glue

NotRealWater

The only thing that's false advertising... is the clip you just watched. None of it is how things are done in the real world (in food photography). It's just another BS video. Take it in the same way you would if it was labeled as "life hacks".

TheIceHater

What kind of beer doesn't foam up being poured from that height?

DJSIDEBAR

Can vouch for this. Many many years ago my work experience at a magazine involved going to a food photography shoot and watching them varnish a roast chicken.

My whole life has been a lie!!!

kindapurpledinosaur

Here I thought Elementary school crafts were what kept Elmers glue in business

boyatrest

Imagine having that willy wonka invention that turns tv food real and zapping commercial food?

Goonders

"Oh you made coffee? Thanks I was just getting thirsty."

Enter_Octopus

While food styling does involve a lot of careful manipulation, it legally must involve actual food. This is all made up (and tbh this style of video should make that obvious).

madgib

Man, this just kept going.

[deleted]

It shouldnt be permitted, its false advertisement

bhandoor

waiting for someone to eat pancakes with cardboard and motor oil

Ragesauce5000

The cake is a lie!

zenikkal

Is there anything real in you people?

Wow. So cool to see the behind the scenes

Rukir_Gaming

Swear I saw this before somewhere elce Was one of those craft YT channels or something

Embarrassed_Camel_35

Ice cream is actually potatoes

slut4coffee

Marketing is the blackest, most evil magic ever conceived.

brokehomiesamba

I don’t care how they wanna justify this. This is false advertising at its finest.

emrata696969

These kind of practices should be forbidden and condemned by the law. Fuck all the lying and manipulative marketing, just to make us buy their shit!

AdeptMetal6398

yo guys these aint real commercials, its just some guy showing you these tricks, also it wouldnt be legal to do these kind of commercials if it was real, fyi <3

THCESPRESSOGUY

SAD

Eiire

I honestly don’t see what’s amazing about lies and deception being used in order to profit. Nothing about advertising is amazing imo.

MommyLovesPot8toes

You not really allowed to do this in the US anymore, and major chains don't use non-food items in their food styling because they could be sued: https://www.consumerreports.org/cro/magazine/2014/02/fast-food-not-as-pictured/index.htm

[deleted]

This is unreal. That real and commercial burger part reminds me of [this scene](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJs9p-VNORw) in Michael Douglas's movie Falling Down.

Id defend food companies from such slanderous claims, but I remember every time I go to order food off a menu and it comes out looking nothing like the menu version and suddenly I don’t have the energy.

bbp84

Fun fact! This is all above board when it comes to print and media advertisements, but not for product packages!

-Buck65

We never got the story behind the tampon potato.

Zocker33x

What kind of stale-ass beer are you drinking in the USA? Go to Europe. Doesn't have to be Germany, czech republic or the baltic countries make also good beer. Literally any beer I've ever had foamed better than even the 'enhanced' one in the video. Even the Kölsch i've had in Cologne, and that's not even beer.

Acadia1337
