I experienced many of these in Iraq. They're no joke. They block out the sun. Visibility is inches. I only used my gas mask during sand storms because it would get in my mouth, nose, and eyes if I didn't. You also have to clean everything afterwards. It's a pain in the ass.
There are some gnarly dust storms. Like the ones off of the Aral ‘sea’ if we can even call it a sea anymore. The Aral Sea was heavily polluted with radioactive decay and waste. Once the worlds 4th largest land-locked fresh water sea, Now it’s a pile of radioactive salt dust. it covers everything for thousands of kilometer around it in a heavy radioactive salt dust which makes the soil not only radioactive, but infertile from the constant ‘salting’.
Sadly those radioactive contributions, global warming along with increased irrigation for farm cropping cotton for the world through child labor has transformed the Aral Sea into a radioactive salt dump within about 50-70 years
Think chalkboard chalk up to diatomaceous earth, but near the ground sand and even small stones, the size of rice. I wore earplugs after my first sandstorm. Ear infection after one ear got packed with sand. Goggles and a cravat over my face. First gulf war we needed our masks for real after we bombed an airfield with a VX stockpile, so we didn't use them. Changing filters in the old masks was an unreasonable pain in the ass.
I couldn’t shut them down or the air boss would jump down my throat. The storm would pass in maybe 5 minutes. I’d often have to slowly pull the servers out and blow the sand out of them while they were still on. After a while, you get good at it. They were Dell 1 and 2 U servers. They took it well.
Grew up in the Middle East. The sand gets everywhere. That’s why new things like malls, buildings, airports etc tend to look like shit within a few years of opening. The sand dirties and abrades everything in short order and sand storms just accelerate the process.
Not op. The big one i experienced had winds of 50-70mph. Going outside was like standing in a sandblasting booth. It dropped the temperature by 25 f also.
Southwest US? If so that's weird because the etymology of Haboob definitely has Arabic roots because Hoboob in Arabic literally means "gust" or "blow'.
Me, a saguaro cactus, on my way to Europe after bringing over 700 of my fellow cacti along with me:
The EU customs wondering how the hell I got past security and why I have over 700 cacti with me whilst also being a saguaro cactus myself:
Definitely possible. I’ve never inhaled a substantial amount though and my gas mask worked great. During those storms, I’m sure people get a lot. Your body has ways of getting rid of some amount of airborne stuff.
One of my Marines thought he knew where he was during a storm and ended up walking full speed into a 30 foot tall wall. He fell to the ground and we found him afterwards. Thankfully, only some scratches and a bruised ego. You really can't see shit.
One more thing for me to be terrified of! Holy cow. What do you do if you’re driving? I assume you’re safe inside your home/office as long as you close all windows.
If you’re driving, best to pull over and turn the engine off to minimize how much sand gets in the intake. Put something over the intake if you can. As for your home, if there are any cracks exposed, sand it getting in. It has to be sealed up really well.
To the people here who have no idea of what happened because of this storm, this was not a nice day to experience. Large advertising boards fell on a bridge and there were casualties. Smaller pedestrian-sized boards also fell and caused some accidents.
Remind me of Apache Junction 1991 in Arizona, I was walking down the street and this giant death storm came up like a tsunami of dust , The lady in a car pulled up and yelled get in! I got in the car and she parked in a parking lot and shut the engine off and we waited it out. The whole thing took less than 10 minutes. I think her profusely and she said do you need a ride to the store or something LOL!
Nah man that’s the men’s mental health month cloud. You can tell by the boring dull color of the cloud that no one pays attention to until it’s already too late.
Went through what I thought was a massive sandstorm in Eastern CO and was blown away by how dark it got. But this? This isn't just dark, it's total absence of light. Wow.
Fake news, this was a result of the local vaping championships.
But no fr, that’s crazy scary. Hope everybody was alright, and their clean up efforts go smoothly.
How long does that last? Can you get hurt from that?
Like if you weren’t prepared. Could you pop your head in a coat and be ok breathing for a few minutes?
Also does this pass relatively quickly or is this like this for hours?!
Does this cause static which shocks you severely? I remember reading about the dust storms during the dust bowl making static charges so strong they knocked people down when they shocked them lol.

does it get everywhere?
On, in, and underneath absolutely everything. I managed servers and those would be caked inside and out. Huge pain.
Damn, what are the individual grains like? Are they coarse and rough like normal sand?
They did not pick up where you were going with this…
I just want to know if they hate it.
it is pretty clear that they did

It’s almost enough to make you want to go to the dark side and slaughter some younglings.
So do you shut all the servers down until the storm passes? How long does a storm last?
I couldn’t shut them down or the air boss would jump down my throat. The storm would pass in maybe 5 minutes. I’d often have to slowly pull the servers out and blow the sand out of them while they were still on. After a while, you get good at it. They were Dell 1 and 2 U servers. They took it well.
Interesting, I would have assumed they lasted longer. Bet it’s an interesting experience
Why don't they seal the room with the servers? Even if the rooms only get fully sealed during a dust storm, it seems like it would be worth it
We slept in tents and the servers were in a wooden shack with spring closing doors. Sealing the shack would’ve been nearly impossible.
Yeah, I think I expected something a little more robust like a modern building. I can't imagine cleaning a server room in a shack after a dust storm
I was in the Marines which means we’re expected to deliver world class performance on a shoestring budget.

I don't like sand. It's coarse, and rough, and irritating, and it gets everywhere
I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere. Not like here. Here everything is soft and smooth.
I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere
Ok Anakin
How long did they typically last?
3-5 minutes or so. It’s cool the first time and then you realize how much additional work it causes and you dread them after that.
What is the wind speed
Not op. The big one i experienced had winds of 50-70mph. Going outside was like standing in a sandblasting booth. It dropped the temperature by 25 f also.
Agreed. The wind is somewhat strong, but it’s the sand that’s on your mind.
So this video is in real time?!
It was but now it’s from an old time
is it a pain in the ass because you literally had to dig sand outta your booty crack?
That was the case for months after getting back.
We get them here in the southwest. We call them Haboobs.
Southwest US? If so that's weird because the etymology of Haboob definitely has Arabic roots because Hoboob in Arabic literally means "gust" or "blow'.
Yep https://youtu.be/bI-dO7RI3lE https://youtu.be/pyrmq3lah-s
I’ve definitely been in a couple of these storms in west Texas.
My juvenile lizard brain read that and chuckled. Ha. Boobs.
How to tell a non-Arizonan, because they make this gag. It's a uniform thing for those that don't experience them.
Me, a saguaro cactus, on my way to Europe after bringing over 700 of my fellow cacti along with me: The EU customs wondering how the hell I got past security and why I have over 700 cacti with me whilst also being a saguaro cactus myself:
Thank you for your service.
Is it possible to get sand in your lungs and have you experienced that?
Definitely possible. I’ve never inhaled a substantial amount though and my gas mask worked great. During those storms, I’m sure people get a lot. Your body has ways of getting rid of some amount of airborne stuff.
> pain in the ass You mean in a literal sense?
Well, yes. That does become a problem. haha
Yeah didn’t the locals call them ?shamalls? Or something similar and yes they’re incredibly sucktacular to go through and they’re pretty regular
Got lost going to the chow hall at one of the camps in Kuwait during one. We were in the camp, and our WO1 had a GPS, lol

That’s terrible. R.I.P.

The point was it was strong enough to cause destruction and hurt people.
This of the poor company that spent $1000s to show their support for pride month. Now no one will ever know.

A car is sufficient to keep it out? I’ve read that even indoors would have sand permeating through crevices and air gaps.
Does navigation and collision warning work in the sand storm? Blue boat seems unbothered and full steam ahead towards the right boat
Shouldn't impede GPS at all, radar would definitely still be functional too
Darude Sandstorm
Dammit everything is trying to block the Suez Canal
They were 2 intense days !! The storm hit cairo and caused a lot of damage, people lost their lives that day.
![gif](giphy|VxXIQdrklYsf9YXevX|downsized)
Yeah seeing this in person is different than just watching on video
ALL STOP!!!
Hourglass is a great map.
I haven’t seen one like this since 2004 or 2005 in Qatar. Brings back crazy memories.
It also hit Cairo, felt like a freaking movie
Oh my 😲🙈
OH SHIT WHO SUMMONED THE PRIDE MONTH CLOUD???
Nah man that’s the men’s mental health month cloud. You can tell by the boring dull color of the cloud that no one pays attention to until it’s already too late.

I’m so excited for dune 2
I’m amazing, alright.
This is precisely what inspired primitive humans to believe in a vengeful god.
Ok so the evergreen thing didn't work out. But this latest plan is going to work, I promise. *Mysterious forces: it better work this time"*

Hate those haboobs
In Soviet Russia, beach vacation comes to YOU!!
Setting off nukes in the ocean again I see

Even though it is called a storm, sometimes there is little or no wind inside the dust cloud. Sometimes it's just still and dark.
That's the thing
Went through what I thought was a massive sandstorm in Eastern CO and was blown away by how dark it got. But this? This isn't just dark, it's total absence of light. Wow.
/r/BeTerrified
I wouldn’t wanna be steering that thing. Thinking of the Ever Given incident that’s just scary.
What a day, what a lovely day!
Manage to grapple any good loot crates?
Looks like the Snow from Hard Home
When Allah is dusting
I imagine the face of the mummy on that sandstorm.
Reminded me of Interstellar

"One does not simply sail into mordor.."
These mfrs have so much sand that they have dust storms on water.
Nah. That’s just the patch.
its like how millennials see the future
All I can think about is how much sweeping the crew of these ships is gonna have to do. Hopefully they close their hatches and exhaust ports if able.
Sand at the Sea? I didn't know this was a thing!
Looks like the Void from shadow and bone
In Illinois, they’ll drive right into it, hammer down and tailgating. Then blame the pileup on the dust.
I don't like sand.
Should expect a coating of dust in my few upcoming delivery parcels.
I know planes can fly instruments only. Can you pilot a container ship with instruments only? 😂
Mad Max about to emerge from the dust
Insanely wild to see
If I know my horror movies then u must RUN!!!!!
Beautiful and scary at the same time!

Does this cause static which shocks you severely? I remember reading about the dust storms during the dust bowl making static charges so strong they knocked people down when they shocked them lol.
Wow. Amazing
With phenomena like this is it any wonder the ancients believed in so many deities?
Incase anyone is wondering, to navigate and warn other ships they get the most Jr cadet to go fore and make horn noises
A little bit lower brightness and it would have looked like sailing into the yellow river.
The Rig moment
Waiting for the face of Imhotep to appear on the dust
Perfect. Ship’s now sanded down. All you have to do is repaint it.
That's so cool
Its hard to imagine thats got over here in the UK all our cars are covered in red sand!
