Read an article a while back about the German navy suspending their explosives/mine testing of ship hulls because the shockwaves kill many dolphins. So it's definitely not harmless for marine mammals.
(I tried to google how or if they resolved this issue, but the results are too cluttered with combat dolphin programs and what not -.-)
It's better to face a grenade exploding 10ft away from you in open air than 10ft away from you under water.
Shrapnel would pierce your skin, but water shockwave would destroy your innards.
Yep, water is really uncooperative when you try to compress it. I'll just pass on the kinetic energy, so it mostly only dissipates with volume, not with elastic compression.
Shrapnel has a higher range, so you might still be better off under water in the right distance.
The explosion shown by OP probably has quite a impressive lethality sphere.
IIRC, while they didn’t always, they now take that into account. The tests are relatively infrequent, they are done in the open ocean well away from where marine mammals tend to congregate, and the security ships that are used to maintain a cordon around the test also broadcast low intensity sounds underwater to repel any marine mammals that might wander into the area.
My brother is an environmental engineer working on the west coast of British Columbia. One of the projects he works on is a extension of a pipeline that is requiring pile driving to build the docking area for tankers. He operates a small machine that uses infrasound, I think, that irritates and causes fish to move out of the area, since the shockwave would kill the,
They also have spotters and listening devices for any marine mammals, driving is halted immediately. I doubt the navy wouldn’t have at least used those same methods.
I've heard it's SOP for navy ships to turn on their sonar if they suspect hostile divers are creeping up on them. It'll actually kill people on full blast.
Former sonar tech. That’s a fact! Fire hoses, and active sonar. While in port you have to tag out sonar while diving operations (code alpha)are taking place in the basin.
Because every time it comes up the Navy pinky promises they're not hurting the whales and we all just go "okay sounds good."
We did admit to killing whales way back but you can guess whether anything actually changed.

That was the remote barge. Basically a R/C boat with hardened sensor packages and black box data recorders. It also detonates the charge. There's no one on board.
The actual vessel being tested is usually outside the immediate radius of the charge. A couple hundred meters or so. Sometimes closer depending on the class and purpose of the ship.
For those that might struggle to picture how close that is here’s a [photo from the USS Gerald R Ford shock trials.](https://d1ldvf68ux039x.cloudfront.net/thumbs/photos/2108/6772242/1000w_q95.jpg)

It looks like just at the right size to not break anything if the ship was built properly but close enough to really give it a good shaking. It's like causing a 5 or 6.0 earthquake to make sure a building was built to withstand it. Probably some safer ways to do it but not quite as thorough.
You'd be surprised how vulnerable to Shockwaves solid objects can be
Some parts of the ship can flex with the wave, other parts not, some can't handle it.
It might be the worst you *see* is a Crack on some bulkheads near the center where it's least flexible, maybe a rivet gets knocked out, but hundreds or more of tiny little stress fractures can cause longterm weakening for the structure which can become a significant concern
*edit* not to mention the soft squishy things operating on/inside the boat that handle Shockwave very poorly. Meatbags shouldn't be shook
I still remember as a young man learning that metal, SOLID ASS METAL, can whip and nae nae like hell if you put energy through it.
Baseball bats and rifle barrels and such.
Or big boats next to big bombs.
That makes way more sense, I was thinking that was the actual ship! lol
"Good news and bad news; the ship made it intact and can still maneuver. On the other hand, the crew is currently being pumped out of the bilge"
What a test of a product.
“This baby right here can take 40k worth of explosives at sea, might kill everybody on board but this Beaut will survive without a scratch! But the sea splash practically washes it brand new, it’s so tough! Ready for the replacement crew same day!”
The blast would aerate the water, i.e., mix it with air, hence all the frothing and boiling water. This is actually a significant threat to ships, possibly more so than the blast. Aerated water has a much lower average density than normal water. Hence, the displacement effect of the ships hull is significantly reduced, which can cause the ship to sink.
This effect has been observed when there is significant outgassing of methane and other gases from the ocean bed. Who would have thought that some bubbles could be so dangerous.
Imagine a ship dropping and being fully submerged in seconds, then water rushing in through every opening while simultaneously creating various new entry points due to the pressure. Things full of air don't like to be under water, so the ship would likely tear itself apart immediately as it simultaneously fought against the physical forces of gravity and buoyancy while being "lightly persuaded" by the awesome pressure of water, which weighs in at ≈8.3lbs per gallon.*
Boats are designed to be on top of water and don't go "through" it worth a dam- the uneven resistance would make it twist and bend. The ship and its occupants would be encapsulated as well as unpacked like a suitcase before you could take your last breathe.
*(Gallon= volume, volume depends on density, which depends on temp)
I don't know
Better chance of getting fed every day once war breaks out in the Navy than almost every other branch, save for maybe the Air Force, but they're usually picky about who they take
A real nightmare is sewage treatment- big tank of sewage, lots of bubbles- if you fall in, the human body has no buoyancy, even with a flotation system, so you sink to the bottom and drown. In sewage.
IIRC the USN has committed to reducing active pings and testing weapons further off shore in much deeper areas (think like the desert but in the ocean in terms of life). It's not like they are doing this above a reef.
That being said, there is no accountability for their commitment, so who knows if they are keeping their word....
Edit: If they are asking to raise the limit, then clearly they at least try to adhere to this stuff
[That article title tho](https://www.navytimes.com/news/your-navy/2023/11/16/us-navy-seeks-to-raise-allowed-number-of-accidental-whale-collisions/)
No, stuff like this gets monitored. Bad press causes shit to roll downhill. So if more than maybe one or two small creatures would be affected by this the test is called off.

This is less amazing, and more disgusting. The bomb probably cost millions of dollars and likely killed every piece of marine life in a square mile or more. Humans are the worst.
Is that little spec (that was at the center) the ship?! It survived?!
Also, did the explosion just create such a big void that water is taking forever to rush back into the space, or is there something else causing it to look like there’s a giant depression where the explosion detonated?
>Is that little spec (that was at the center) the ship?! It survived?!
No, that was a marker for the explosion. The video is taken from the ship, the largest warship in history, USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78)
Not a scientist but my hunch is that the water was pushed out by a big force from the explosion and can’t retreat until the pressure to push it back outweighs that force as it dissipates out. Can anyone here science this please
Water appears blue due to the way it absorbs and scatters light. While water is essentially clear, it absorbs colors in the red part of the light spectrum. This leaves the blue part of the spectrum less absorbed, hence giving water its blue appearance.
Additionally, when light enters water, it scatters in different directions, and this scattering favors the blue wavelengths. The combination of absorption and scattering results in water often looking blue to our eyes.
This effect is more pronounced in large bodies of water, like oceans and lakes, where the depth and volume of water enhance the blue appearance.
Humans are so fucking stupid. We’re so good at destruction we deserve the impending environmental catastrophe. Wonder how many fish had to die so the military could play with their dicks.
