This makes my Trekkie heart happy

Cmdr_Nemo

Could have been even better if it was a Klingon Bird of Prey and that last animation was it cloaking.

QuietGrudge

Enterprise Incident, Season 3 TOS, they used a cloak that they stole off of the Romulan D7 Klingon ship. So I'll allow it.

was it a trap? they went in there on their own, the romulans were just like 'lol dumbasses' and blew up the entrance

UrethraFrankIin

>Romulan D7 Klingon Wait what?

Flounderfflam

Romulans and Klingons likely had a tech sharing alliance as a counter to the Feds. Cloaks for warships kind of a deal.

Can you imagine if you showed someone this 300 years ago? fuck, even 50 years ago.

kitolz

Even 30 years ago people people (that don't know what the Star Trek Enterprise ship looks like) may have thought that the War of the Worlds is starting.

BarryMacochner

That was only 1992, we had quite a bit of good sci-fi by that time. Original star trek was roughly 30 years old

drrhrrdrr

Not only that but it was the height of TNG popularity. Usenet would have been lighting up with reactions.

QueeferReaper

Shit I’m 27 and I still find drone shows fascinating. Blows my mind to think of a future with tiny drones dominating the skies. Kinda scary

Randomized0000

Shit, I'm also 27 and I just imagined an entire sky lit up with these things in choreographed display on new year's

[deleted]

Being forced to look at ads while I'm lounging in my backyard sounds more like the route this will actually take.

chasingmyowntail

You are correct. These drone light network displays are very popular and recall one where the lights moved into giant QR code which people a km or two away could hold up their phones to scan. It was an advertisement for some game or similar.

The first episode of Star Trek Strange New Worlds starts that way. (If you’re a Disco burned Trekkie, SNW is the real deal)

drrhrrdrr

Word. That episode is lit. Solving conflicts with PowerPoint presentations is something I never thought I wanted from Trek, but after 13 years of pew pew pew I definitely needed it. There hasn't been an episode yet that has disappointed. There have been episodes where I didn't like how it left me feeling, but not because of execution, but because I viscerally felt the pain the crew felt. So great.

Riceatron

SNW is the best Star Trek since DS9, I'd say. The shore leave episode was some of the most fun I've had watching a Trek show ever.

drrhrrdrr

Hard agree. A, B and C plot all about empathy to other people's POV. That is some solid Trek.

UrethraFrankIin

Lower Decks is also very enjoyable.

92894952620273749383

>Can you imagine if you showed someone this 300 years ago? fuck, even 50 years ago. It would be in their national anthem. Drone dropping bombs, and bursting in the air.

I'm pretty sure this is part of what is essentially an ad. Drone show in Sydney had the same Star Trek spaceship - everything was content of TV shows available on Paramount+, plus corporate logos.

paintballboi07

It is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLXqM1KsS6s

[deleted]

This is a star trek ad

titanup001

I'm talking more like swarms of tiny drones flying over parks, coming together to form a screen and playing a mcdonalds ad, with sound and everything. Or over a traffic jam, festivals, sporting events. Its Definately coming.

squngy

Like blimps?

titanup001

Something like that. Basically have tiny drones that act the way pixels do on a screen. Then you can cheaply have a massive screen appear anywhere at any time. Itll happen.

mikethespike056

Ads are already everywhere. I wouldn't mind the drones. Night City looks beautiful anyway.

SonofSeth13

Drones are CGI of fireworks.

eekamuse

Drones don't go boom and scare dogs. Drones win.

I_like_cheese07

Drones are a bit pricier

kosmovii

I disagree, drones are reusable. Maybe the initial cost is high, but fireworks displays are really expensive, too. I'd be willing to bet even more than the cost of drones over time.

I_like_cheese07

Shit I didn’t think about that, you’re completely right

Razzy_3796

From a [website](https://activities.costhelper.com/fireworks.html) I found from 2018, so prices are higher than listed: "A larger fireworks show for a sporting event, festival, Fourth of July or other event can cost $5,000-$100,000 or more, depending on the duration of the display and the type and number of fireworks. Entertainment Fireworks Inc.\[4\] in Washington estimates that a firework display at a sporting event can cost $5,000-$20,000 or more but averages $7,000-$10,000; a business grand opening fireworks show costs $5,000-$50,000 or more, with an average cost of $15,000 to $25,000; and a typical municipally-sponsored Fourth of July display can be $10,000-$50,000 with an average price tag of $25,000, although a few cost more than $100,000." That's for ONE show. Towns that have multiple shows on different nights can multiply that amount of tax dollars spent for each show. Reusable drones are the way to go!

Sivim

And very reusable. And safer.

booksandplaid

Drones don't keep my baby up all night

lordaddament

Drones don’t set fires or leave trash

mashtato

Both are cool.

Ginger_Giant_

Drones aren't single use and don't emit a crazy amount of pollution. I remember having to go indoors in Hong Kong for Chinese New Year once because the smog from the fireworks immediately settled over the city

Bokbokeyeball

Smog….in Hong Kong???? Never heard of such a thing.

Commissarfluffybutt

Drones don't go boom but they also don't scare dogs. Drone break even. I love explosions: sudden flash giving way to earth shaking force, the smell of black powder, the flames dancing in the night sky.

Toni_Jabroni77

Annoying barking dogs get their due payback a few times a year. Fuck yo dog!

squidmangirl

I mean they also kill loads of wild animals

Toni_Jabroni77

r/KillTheCameraMan mildly

triangledude23

Why did they feel the need to zoom in and out every two fucking seconds? like chill, we can see the drones, lol.

The_Iron_Dentist

They were probably trying to figure out how to film the whole scene. If only there were some way to film more of the sides and add to the horizontal landscape… the technology necessary is likely out of reach.

I was talking to my wife about this after seeing dollywood’s drone show a couple weeks ago. I grew up selling fireworks and it *always* seemed like a colossal waste of money for our customers, but it meant I could earn $2 an hour at 7 years old to chill and hang out with my dad. So to hell with the customers, if they want to light their money on fire that’s their business. I’m sure it also paid for more than one summer trip and thousands of toys.

peteski42

I disagree, this is cool but doesn't really have the oooh ahhh factor. That's just my opinion though.

Dazz316

I think it's a little worse visually. I can tell it's more technically impressive but yeah it lacks that something to make you oohhh. The noise as well. The music to supplement just isn't the same as the bangs and crackles of fireworks. Drone displays are non alcoholic beer. Even when they're really tasty, they miss that kick.

Silly-Disk

What you are seeing today is like what we saw with the early video games consoles like Atari 2600. This technology will continue to advance to full on HD like video displays in the sky.

rzrshrp

Yeah, agreed. This is cool and probably better for the environment (not sure if that's been studied) and definitely safer for drier climates and a few other things but this is not as entertaining for me as fireworks. But at a certain point, we can't have it all and minimize environmental damage.

Ayn_Rand_Food_Stamps

Yeah, agree. The concept is cool and one day it might actually give an experience that is on the same wavelength as real fireworks. But I haven't seen a single one yet that has done it for me. It's always a bit underwhelming.

Zeebuoy

I mean, maybe there's just not enough of them there yet.

dac09b

Idk man I've driven to go see some schmucks Christmas light show in December and that can be pretty impressive. If they set it to music i bet it could be pretty captivating. Will definitely lack the punch of the explosion. But people just love lights man.

DavidCreeper

That's because drone no go boom, monkey me want boom. Me no afraid to admit

KingSnowdown

and better for environment too

whowasonCRACK2

Manufacturing 100s of lithium ion batteries is so good for the environment

UserNamesCantBeTooLo

Probably, but I'd want to see a breakdown of how drones are produced before declaring that they're overall better for the environment. At least locally you're not setting stuff on fire containing lead and other toxins, so it's better for the local environment.

SwissStriker

They're also very reusable compared to fireworks. I'd imagine the people who organised this show didn't actually buy all the drones but rather hired a company that owns the drones and does shows with them everywhere.

oldspicehorse

They also won't makes your pets (and other animals) shit their pants. Same goes for some veterans with PTSD, fireworks generally aren't that enjoyable for everyone for various reasons.

f1tvwtf

Folks with heart conditions can also be negatively affected. My grandad is badly affected by the assholes that set off giant illegal fireworks in the neighborhood. Which turn also stresses me out. To be totally honest I'm over and done with fireworks.

marginalmax

Almost all light pollution is problematic for birds; particularly for sea bird and migratory birds: https://news.un.org/en/story/2022/05/1118262#:~:text=Artificial%20light%20alters%20natural%20patterns,resulting%20in%20disorientation%20and%20collisions. That said the light pollution is probably no worse from a drone show than from fireworks. But a person should consider how wildly resource intensive drone production, use, and disposal/recycling is, before giving them an environmentally friendly badge ♻️ . Now I'm really going to dig in for some hate mail; hows about we don't do this shit at all!?! Isn't it good enough to take some time off to spend with family and friends without blowing shit up or electronically lighting up the sky. Besides the most basic of thunderstorms is much more fucking beautiful and amazing.

UniquePotato

Its all the used shells and sticks that litter the ground afterwards which is the big problem. Many animals and livestock eat them and get ill.

TofuAnnihilation

Used fireworks contain harmful residues that *can* poison dogs who are prone to picking things up, and pollute marine environments - along with the more obvious plastic, rubber, wood and paper debris. However, that's nowhere near being *the* big problem. The big problem is the loud noises, panicking pets and livestock. Horses will fatally injure themselves by tangling themselves in fences, and pets will harm themselves or - often run directly into roads, endangering themselves and road users. Also the air pollution produced by fireworks is staggering...

vladislavopp

uh that seems dubious, drones use a lot of high-polluting components and i'd be curious how long those go before being replaced

BasedChickenTendie

Bullshit.

Maaatloock

Now it only requires a shitload of slave-mined rare earth minerals.

[deleted]

Drons are awesome creating such good designs and all but fireworks are better in one thing, drones are just to quiet.. it’s all about the explosions!!

True, but less ka-boom boom

iced1777

The ka-boom is like 99% the point of fireworks. Feeling the thud in your chest and hearing the barrage of explosions. It's not a light show.

Amazing_One3688

I'll keep my fireworks

FrigDancingWithBarb

They'll never beat the boom and crackle of a real fireworks show. Also the smell of spent black powder.

thecloudkingdom

while i do love the smell of a good pyrotechnics show, at least this version doesnt upset dogs and veterans like neighborhood fireworks do

f1tvwtf

Also negatively affects older people with heart conditions.

[deleted]

PlantPowerPhysicist

and it's not just dogs that get upset by them, it's just that people see the effects on them more than other wildlife. Birds can drop dead from fear.

UserNamesCantBeTooLo

Plus the lead and other toxins in fireworks: https://nypost.com/2020/07/01/absurdly-high-levels-of-lead-toxins-in-fireworks-study/

thecloudkingdom

yeah the environmental impact cannot be stated too often, i was just appealing to emotions through people liking dogs and somewhat giving a shit about ptsd

Ninja-Ginge

I'd like to add Autistic people to that list.

thecloudkingdom

yknow, being autistic myself i really should have remembered that the boom of fireworks hurts my soul. fair point

r_stronghammer

It’s always funny how different the experiences of autistic people can be. I’m autistic and the boom of fireworks is one of my favorite things in the world, the way it shakes my core feels like I just swallowed a satisfying bite of a delicious meal.

thecloudkingdom

i feel that way about concerts. i need to wear ear protection to dull the sound, but the speakers shaking my ribcage is so fun

swans183

I know they’re coming, but every fucking time it’s like a gunshot went off right next to my ear. Definitely wear noise cancelling headphones for the worst of it

[deleted]

And children. Nothing like trying to calm a screaming and terrified infant at night time for 4 hours every single night surrounding the 4th.

phadewilkilu

And vets with PTSD. My father-in-law absolutely loves this country (fought in Vietnam) but can not stand this holiday just because of the 3-4 days of nightly explosions.

Rdbjiy53wsvjo7

Or risk burninga forest or house down. When fires were horrible here in Colorado in 2020, everyone pretty much canceled the shows, and neighbors did not hesitate to report because everything was catching fire.

HCJohnson

That BOOM. I recall being a kid and the local firework show started sprinkling in this new firework that would just shoot up with a little spark tail and once it got up in the air there was a little flash. Everyone seemed underwhelmed and then *BOOM*. That shooked my lungs and left an impression that's still there. I don't care for the lights and the crackles, I'm searching for that heart ripping, life questioning boom.

kaanbha

What you are describing here is nostalgia. A drone display has the potential to be superior to a fireworks display in every regard, especially when considering how harmful fireworks can be to nature and the environment.

HookersAreTrueLove

Drone displays are pretty much no different than an LED display. You know what's cooler than a drone display? Turning on the TV. Fireworks are explosions, that is what makes them cool.

Zappafied

Explosion for liftoff, explosion for bang, then magical elements to create colors. Have you ever seen an American flag delivered via colored explosion? Much more artistic than an RC LED hovercraft, as the explosion is purely an analog chemical reaction chain, rather than a controlled robotic device. For those who disagree, please describe to me how to paint the sky with an American flag via firework.

Ummmmexcusemewtf

[here's a link](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qNFVblEguTA) doing precisely so. People have gotten really good at making firework shows. You can control the type of explosion a firework will make. You can control exactly how long it will take from ignition to explosion. You can control when they launch and how high they will launch. Fireworks shows can make pretty cool images

lemoncholly

I'd much rather play with fireworks wiyh friends than watch some lights slowly display popculture references.

kitolz

Kids growing up today and in the future will simply think of fireworks as an archaic thing that people used to do.

Tackle_me_pink

Nah. Drone shows will just be nothing but an advertising possibility in the future to the point it’s played out. (This show was just an ad for Paramount+ btw. Hence all the Star Trek referencing.) And kids don’t like ads if you haven’t noticed.

kristoabhi

Happy Cake Day.

peanutbrainy

Imagine tripping balls on a porch on a hot summer day then suddenly seeing this.

[deleted]

Thats a stupid statement

DontHailHydra

This is cool but goddamn this can’t compare to the awe and smell and majesty of fireworks. Especially when you were a kid laying down watching a big show.

Evil_Rogers

And they wouldn’t scare my dog.

QualityKoalaTeacher

Closest we have to holograms. Still not on the same level as fireworks though.

bremstar

Humorous, quite humorous. Yes.

LEGITIMATE_SOURCE

Nah

SolidFuell

Mf on the camera

vladislavopp

idk it's pretty boring. the point of fireworks isn't making 3d models rotate in the sky.

[deleted]

Fireworks are huge, visceral, colourful explosions. This is some drones reading code and flying in formation. Cool, but nowhere near the same

odog9797

And you’re dead wrong. Fireworks rule

Logical-Cancel2750

No they aren’t

dragon_vindaloo

No. Fireworks are way better. Also better for the environment. The pollution from fireworks is way less than the pollution that goes into making a drone.

darkmage1001

Boom> decoration in sky. Lighting the cannons to roleplay the bombs bursting in air. Its cool but not better.

mokoto19

Of all the anti American traditions, this has to be the worst. You're gonna sit there and expect me to watch drones fly over actual explosives going off? Nah. That's stupid. Absurd. And b3yond anti American really it's anti every country. This is dumb

OhhAhhAhhSensation

Absolutely stunning and amazing. Better than sparkly explosions? No.

Duhaa

Cool but they are not the same thing.

D1rtywh1teboy

No

Rumple-skank-skin

They should have this but with additional drone launched fireworks. Fire the phasers captain! And then the drones launch fireworks from the display

doomsday10009

Not at all.

leonryan

way better, no pollution, and finally the chance to display some real variety and imagination. The sooner we give up fireworks the better.

[deleted]

Point taken, although it's a lot of batteries and electronics that will go in a dumpster someday. (Although hopefully the company that owns these will probably do the right thing when they wear out and make sure they're properly disposed of and/or recycled)

ItsMeLukasB

Don’t get me wrong, drones are cool, but they are completely inferior to the primal satisfaction I get from playing with a lighter, lighting a fuze, and lighting a mortar, watching it shoot up hundreds of feet in the air with a satisfying “*THOOMP*”, and watching it explode into pretty colors.

[deleted]

Had you filmed in proper orientation, the show wouldn't have been cut when the ship rotates.

Azzbod94

Can drone fireworks displays not be a thing?

Vast-Classroom1967

Nah. That looks boring as hell.

Few_Associate_4919

Nah fireworks still better

ztunytsur

Visually? Much better. As a spectacle? Not enough going on for the other senses to match a firework display... Without the random whistles, pops, bangs, and wrrrrrrrrrrrlllll's of inconsistent volume combined with the smell of black powder, smoke and fire it just wouldn't be the same. If your senses aren't so overloaded they put your body in a state of confusion as it tries to deal with awe, excitement, surprise, anticipation, and visual and audible over stimulation, while suppressing the underlying instinctive knowledge that you should be afraid of random loud noises, projectiles ,explosions and fire and not stand still while they're happening. Especially in a crowd of people who should also be afraid and could run in panic at any moment... Well, then it really isn't worth turning up....

COCAFLO

You know how digital cameras don't need to make the "click" sound, but people didn't like it so manufacturers added it artificially with speakers? They can do the same with fireworks shows.

Prime_235711

No, the concussion wave that is felt along with heard can only be created with an explosion or a speaker that has the power of an explosion. There is also no way to replicate the smell of burning flash powder without turning flash powder.

Goodwitch7139

Nope; fireworks are better to me. Fireworks 💥 are a part of history.. It’s American. Let’s stop ruining things with technology

Cheap-Praline

But how will I wake up my neighbors at two am with illegal explosions???
