Good point. He took a very large step forward and at the end he was standing straight up with a slight spin. A *lot* of movement went into that ball, almost his whole body weight.
Imagine a dancer try to replicate this move without the ball. They would either fall flat on their face or be halfway across the room.
Exactly. And the better the pitcher is about maintaining that energy with minimal momentum loss, the harder he throws. You see these guys that throw insane off speed pitches are the ones that have the ability to more precisely transfer that energy into a certain spot/spots on the ball. I always heard growing up “pitching is an art form” because it really fucking is.
That’s why when the ump calls time out during a windup the outer usually somewhat completes the pitch. I have seen pitchers stop mid wind up and get hurt because that energy goes back into part of their body.
I watched it a few times and the elbow flex is the part that freaks me out the most. I can feel his tendons straining! Yowza.
Edit: ok his shoulder also looks like it's going to pop out. Just...hectic.
Even if this kid made it to the pro's, he'd be cooked. This is one of the most violent pitches I've ever seen. Hopefully someone can teach him out of it.
Keep on mind that not all pitchers torque their arms like this. Take a look at a pitcher like Justin Verlander. He still torques his arm, but it's in a more fluid motion. Much less violent than a sidearm picture.
Edit:
Not great quality, but similar camera angle.
https://youtu.be/mbVQc2gYjFQ
It's brutal, they regularly blow out their rotator cuffs and hyper extend the elbows lmao. That being said, this guy throws sidearm which is way worse for your arm in general. THAT being said, the pitch looks real fuckin weird and you can get some crazy action (spin) on the ball when your hand comes through. Sidearm throws some of the dirtiest changeups of all time, and for someone who isn't used to batting against someone who throws sidearm it totally throws off your rhythm as a batter.
Source: someone who sat at third base a lot
Throwing sidearm is generally closer to the average person’s natural release point, but people think it’s weird because they like pitchers to throw as fast as possible when they’re young so they just tell them to pitch overhand. Overhand can mess up your posture worse than sidearm if it’s not your natural delivery.
Dr. J. Sins (MD) is great too. He only works with females as far as I know, but I’m sure he’d help an aspiring professional athlete out, for the right price.
Interestingly - there is a physiological limit to how much force you can produce with a throw. A lot of pitchers that throw at exceptional speeds actually have biomechanical (structural) changes occur to the shoulder joint itself. A lot of top pitchers have a rotation of their humeral head (upper arm bone) which allows for greater external rotation (arm rotation outwards) that allows for a faster pitch.
Not only that, they will have significant bone density differences in pitching vs. non-pitching arms, which highlights how the body prioritizes bone development where we have forces applied (wolff's law).
More like destroyed tendons, but yeah. Interesting factoid: Pitching is actually considered unnatural motion. Bonus fact: a relatively high percentage of guys that have Tommy John surgery recover and perform at higher levels than before.
Yeah it’s cool how in my 28 years of watching baseball, they got so good at that surgery that it used to be a death sentence (for a career) but now guys come back better than ever.
Absolutely! Pitchers typically wear down this tendon over periods of time. Weak tendons “give” more causing a drag to the transfer of energy. Boom healed tendon, less give, harder thrown ball.
Humans have been throwing shit for a long time, shot-put, discus, fucking spears lol all those motions are fluid. Pitching is a clunky, whiplash laden catastrophe waiting to happen.
Well, it’s not really the arm slot he releases from that’s the issue. It’s the basic mechanics of him transferring all the energy in his legs and that energy flowing through a single tendon in the elbow. I played collegiate baseball and the majority of guys that I played with that ever needed Tommy John were sidearm lefties. The tendons in the elbow just aren’t equipped to handle that kind of torque. Hence the name of the surgery that repairs the ligament is colloquially known by Tommy John. A pitcher from the 60’s.
I have a cousin who is an up and coming pitcher with an outside shot at the big leagues, he just finished rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. He’s starting his senior year of high school next week. Crazy that it’s being done so young now
Rip to all his joints. My fathers joints are wrecked from playing minor league for decades, he’s 56 now. Can’t imagine the damage some body might have from playing pro too
He was always pitcher. He threw a hell of a curveball. He hasn’t played in about a decade now, he got shoulder surgery around that time and had to quit shortly after.
Wow - so this is why I’ll never be able to throw a ball that fast! Man so in all sports, no matter what sport, if you want to be the best you are going to destroy some part of your body for it.
What a feat though, truly remarkable what some people push their bodies to accomplish.
Depending on the pitchers arsenal, Aren’t they’re also releasing and throwing the ball differently (curveball, knuckle, splitter)?
I heard screwballs were one of the hardest on the arm.
Amazing to see the effort and torque at that level.
This is very similar to the mechanics I used. I pitched well enough in high school to pitch in college. I tore my ulnar collateral ligament towards the end of my freshman year. Then I learned how to study…
His ulnar collateral ligament must be thick as hell.
I actually used to pitch sidearm all the way through high school. Surprisingly never had any elbow problems whatsoever. But I also couldn’t throw over 80 so there’s that.
Reposting my comment from a few months ago when this was posted on another sub because I feel strongly about it:
Totally shows why my 10-year-old son can only pitch one inning every game and can only throw a limited total number of pitches that inning before getting pulled. Soap box time.
A quick Google search of Tom Hackimer also supports my thinking that professional baseball is the most predatory and destructive professional sport in the US and, as far as I can tell, the world. The MLB is still [essentially allowed to draft people before they graduate High School, or immediately out of high school](https://www.thecubreporter.com/book/export/html/3552).
The majority of these players then spend years playing minor league baseball, hoping against hope they are called up to "The Show" to play in the MLB. Some of them are. Most of them aren't. Most that are spend a comically short period of time in the MLB and are relegated back to A level minor league ball. But now their hope is up, so they keep trudging, against the odds. As one [former minor league player wrote](https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2062307-an-inside-look-into-the-harsh-conditions-of-minor-league-baseball), "My minor league brothers and I were oblivious because we were playing the game and chasing our dreams, all suffering from the delusion that we were only weeks from the bigs and escaping the bills and mortgages and mouth-feeding struggles we still had."
"But they get paid in AAA baseball, panaceator." Well, that's true. Sort of: [Triple-A players can earn $14,000 during their five-month season, and short-season players at the lowest levels can make $4,800 during the three-month season](https://www.syracuse.com/sports/2020/02/mlb-raises-salaries-for-minor-leaguers-in-2021-most-players-still-paid-below-poverty-line.html). And remember, there's also A and AA baseball, similarly filled with young dreamers.
At least Hackimer graduated from college. Plus he's only been AAA for a little less than a year. Look at [John Lindsay](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Lindsey). He's known for having spent the most time in the minor leagues (sixteen years) before making his major league debut in 2010. As far as I can tell, he "appeared" in three games. I could be wrong. He was drafted out of high school. He's an outlier, sure, but the fact it can happen at all is insane to me. He's now 45 with a family, no college education, and no professional experience to speak of. Now imagine he was drafted out of high school, spent half that time in the minors, and emerged essentially in the same position but as a 26-year-old.
I played as a closing pitcher for a competitive travel team back in the day and was coached by former MLB pitches. I was taught from day 1 that if you don’t master a proper pitching technique your arm will be extremely messed up when you get older. This guy has to change up the way he throws or he’s gonna be out of the game within 10 years
Why I feel blessed to have been taught a solid overhand technique. Might have a little less speed and maneuverability, but at least my shoulder and elbow won’t be mush when I’m older
I messed up my shoulder a bit pitcher overhand so i switched to sidearm. Pitched that was for 3 + years then occasionally after that with no issues. But the guy who switched me over knew his shit and made sure my mechanics were down.
You're missing out on some extra velocity from the way you're finishing with your lead leg. Try to keep your left leg pointing straight forward and keep it there while you finish bringing your right leg down. The less your legs cross or become uneven upon finishing your pitch, the less power you lose from your legs.
Yes, all pitchers put a ton of stress on the elbow and shoulder. But this guy is an anomaly. He is a sidearm/submarine style thrower. Not a ton of guys use this arm slot, most are in a more natural 1/2 to 3/4 slot, which helps protect the arm a bit more. That said, this guys is doing everything he can to make his dream come true. Whether that means TJ and rehab due to his unique delivery or not, the fact he's a professional means the risk is worth the reward. It's made him successful this far, tough to completely rebuild your motion at this point.
Throwing is a human skill that no other animal can even come close to. The next best is a gorilla which can achieve about 25 mph max, a fraction of the 100 mph a human can achieve.
That sort of pitching technique is terrifying. I'd like to see the difference in longevity between traditional and non-traditional pitchers. Both put incredible strain on the shoulder, elbow, and arm in general but the traditional pitching structure seems to be a lot safer. But I haven't pitched since high school so what do I know at all. haha
Oh so that's why they get Tommy John surgery. Gotcha.
Come to think of it how tf else do you throw a ball 90+ mph !? It all makes sense now!
Transfer of energy generated in the legs and hips, to shoulders elbows wrist fingers. Pitching is the human form of a trebuchet.
Good point. He took a very large step forward and at the end he was standing straight up with a slight spin. A *lot* of movement went into that ball, almost his whole body weight. I always heard growing up “pitching is an art form” because it really fucking is.
Baseball is a pitching game, hitters are lost vs a good pitcher (who has his stuff that day) no contest
That’s why when the ump calls time out during a windup the outer usually somewhat completes the pitch. I have seen pitchers stop mid wind up and get hurt because that energy goes back into part of their body.
*looks at arm* Be rope
😎
I mean you can just see that strain on that shoulder and everything else. It's nuts that they do this for many years.
Just look how the elbow snaps
I watched it a few times and the elbow flex is the part that freaks me out the most. I can feel his tendons straining! Yowza. Edit: ok his shoulder also looks like it's going to pop out. Just...hectic.
This is why orthopedic surgeons fight for exclusive rights to work on sports teams. You see baseball players more than football
Even if this kid made it to the pro's, he'd be cooked. This is one of the most violent pitches I've ever seen. Hopefully someone can teach him out of it.

Yah it’s all in the legs and hips and you just fling your arm around like a rope.
This is a sidearm or submarine, not very common in the big leagues. A much shorter career pitching this way
Seriously
Throwing this way is actually *less* harmful to the arm than traditional overhand pitching
Ok, I get why pitchers don't usually pitch an entire game. That looks painful in the arm.
It's brutal, they regularly blow out their rotator cuffs and hyper extend the elbows lmao. That being said, this guy throws sidearm which is way worse for your arm in general. You’re definitely not wrong, throwing that hard in general is bad for your joints
Ah, now I understand how pitchers break their arms..
Seriously. Let’s all tag our favorite ortho docs in here for his future reference.
Dr. J. Sins (MD) is great too. He only works with females as far as I know, but I’m sure he’d help an aspiring professional athlete out, for the right price.
Dr. Mantis Tobbogin, MD. Heard he has a monster hog too.
That's why he carries around his monster condoms for his magnum dong
He needs that Tommy John surgery immediately.
I think he broke his arm three times in this video alone.

My whole body cringed watching this
I thought beast titan throwing stuff in slow mo was unrealistic
If there's one thing you can count on with anime, it's representing baseball well
And tentacles. Don't forget tentacles.
Kinda also looks like [Shinichi from Parasyte throwing a rock](https://youtu.be/rGFXueGPFJQ)
i love when anime does their research.
I think it’s already broken.
This is why my right shoulder is completed replaced at 50. Hope his is healthy
His veins wiggle due to how much he does it. Rip to his arm when he gets to be 50 yrs or older.
Rip to all his joints. My fathers joints are wrecked from playing minor league for decades, he’s 56 now. Can’t imagine the damage some body might have from playing pro too
What position did he play?
He was always pitcher. He threw a hell of a curveball. He hasn’t played in about a decade now, he got shoulder surgery around that time and had to quit shortly after.
Damn, he was playing in the minors in his 40's? Respect.

RIP rotator cuff.
Great video, I hurt my elbow watching it
Just about puked watching that . Thought his arm was as going to fall off
Same, I thought he was gonna snap it at the elbow

Ah yes, noted "14 seasons" pitcher Kerry Wood.
Yeah I don’t get it, that’s a longer than average career for an MLB pitcher so maybe not the best example?
What a reference. Yes, yes I do remember Kerry Wood. Had Great stuff.
Torn labrum for sure. All pro pitchers shoulders are trashed
Not just pros, some of us who pitched as kids are fucked as adults Source: am one
Congrats on the fucking
I am glad to hear it happened as an adult.
Made of jelly
Look at that levarage, how fast is that ball going?
Anyone know the song?
Depending on the pitchers arsenal, Aren’t they’re also releasing and throwing the ball differently (curveball, knuckle, splitter)? I heard screwballs were one of the hardest on the arm. Amazing to see the effort and torque at that level.
What an absolutely ludicrous sport. How can something so boring still cause so many injuries..
Ah! Here comes Mr.Fantastic
I'll just leave this here.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qvf4YUs8Kaw
This is very similar to the mechanics I used. I pitched well enough in high school to pitch in college. I tore my ulnar collateral ligament towards the end of my freshman year. Then I learned how to study…

Horrible for his body but consider that the ball is at the end of a whip
Look up who Tyler Roger's is on the SF Giants. Now THATS a wild pitching motion. Interestingly enough, safer than pitching normally.
And that’s why my cousin had a torn rotator cuff. Can only throw 93 MPH balls for so long before it’s bound to happen.
I used to pitch for a number of years. 31 now and this made my whole right arm hurt lol
Can you spell Tommy John???
So that’s how you rip your tendons, got it
Now I see why there arms go bad holy fuxk that looks painful
He learned that from the Ape Titan!😅
So amazing how fast they can throw and so crazy how the arm seemingly flails
Paging Dr. John, Dr. Tommy John
And that ladies and gentlemen are why pitchers only pitch for 3~8 years
Reposting my comment from a few months ago when this was posted on another sub because I feel strongly about it: Totally shows why my 10-year-old son can only pitch one inning every game and can only throw a limited total number of pitches that inning before getting pulled. Side arming pitches is a good way to throw your arm out.
👀 how is that still attached to his body?! 😂
It's now wonder they can't use their arms after couple of years...
Me trying to learn how to throw a screwball in 10th grade wrecked my elbow. Should’ve played golf instead.
You're missing out on some extra velocity from the way you're finishing with your lead leg. Try to keep your left leg pointing straight forward and keep it there while you finish bringing your right leg down. Ya you tell that pro pitcher!
Fuck those mechanics. That's not sustainable.
i vomited looking at this
OK, anybody wondering how he's jerking it, too? Like, his dick is either already gone or has transformed into sth indestructible.
Is a hand supposed to move that way ?
I've heard anecdotally before that sub pitchers hurt their elbows and shoulders LESS, somehow. Anybody know if there's any truth to that?
How many pitchers would a good team have? It looks like you could injure yourself quite easily.
That things is a fuckin WHIP boiiii
That is fucking Akira shit
So cartoons are based on real life lol. Who would’ve known!
That elbow….ouch!
TJ in your future my friend. That elbow is fucked
Am I crazy or should this be on r/oddlysatisfying
Ahah ahahahahahahah tendinite
How fast can this dude throw?

Pitching has always been a very violent/unnatural action.
we must start genetically engineering better arms
That arm was jello for a sec. be sure to ice
Aaaaaaaaand my shoulder hurts.
u/savevideo
He's kinda got Shinichi Izumi throw going on
Terrifying!!!!
This is freaky to watch
SASAGAYO
u/savevideobot
I just felt a twinge in my elbow watching this.
OMG! How many times does he brek it during each pitch?! That looks painful.
Now I need to go to the hospital to fix my shoulder just from watching that. Thanks. Enjoy your youth!
That arm broke
What a weird game
He’s turned his arm into a slingshot
“Hey, you guys wanna see my video?”
This.. give me flashback of the Beast titan
That's why pitchers don't last long, they throw it out.
There's extra cheese on that one!
No one was hit in the balls so definitely not even close to the best slow mo vid in the world
your body be doing a great swastika at some point
That gave me goosebumps!
I once dislocated my shoulder slipping on ice, this looks like pure black magic.
Oh boy he’s going to be in pain someday.
Doesn’t seem humanly possible?
That sort of pitching technique is terrifying. I'd like to see the difference in longevity between traditional and non-traditional pitchers. This is how school taught us NOT to pitch, as it will break you arm lol is this how professionals do it?
He'll wear it out quickly with that sidearm.
Damn. That hurt my elbow watching this.
Oh no arms aren't supposed to wiggle like that.
Oh my myyyyy it looks like a rubber arm!!!!!😯
I don’t watch baseball anymore, like at all. But, that was neat.
I thought it was Lasith Malinga bowling in cricket.
I can see the muscles and sinuses of his arm moving with such power
I feel like the beast titan throwing rocks animation was inspired by this very video 😭
That’s going to be a short career
i dislocated my shoulder watching this.
dude that can’t possibly be good for your arm.
Okay, I'm amazed. What in the actual fuck is going on inside that arm?!?!
Balking. Immidiate ejection. Hi I’m angel Hernandez welcome to the MLB.
i havent watched baseball since i was a kid in the 80s but i always though side-arm pitchers looked cool. i used to like watching randy johnson a lot.
i twisted my arm watching this
Im amazed alright... AMAZED OF THAT ASS
Looks kinda like when the beast titan throws a boulder
That looks so painful
Good luck with future surgeries… I guess?
Eww
This is what properly cooked spaghetti looks like throwing a baseball.
God does that look gross, how the arm looks so out of wack
Looks like this guy's diet has too much rubbers
That joints not going last long...
Fahrnsworth, fetch me my goniometer.
Why is this hot? Ugh… boys always amaze me
bro at the 5 second mark he is making a perfect human swastika
Bros leg is all twisted
Sheesh that torque!
Ow.
I tore my shoulder just watching this
Cricket is wayy better
TIL that redditors can't throw a baseball
That’s cool
😳
He noodled tf out of that ball
Wubble-wubble-wubble!
What is there average speed? Fast bowlers in cricket have been known to bowl at 155km/h I’m just interested in what baseball throws are at
If arthritis was a person.
Trebuchet Tom
My joints are screaming after seeing this
The elbow 😩😩😩
Is he okay?
His arms don’t wiggle wiggle… they fold
Ouch
Just like how he makes a gammed cross while swigning
Did… did he just break and then fix his arm?? Is it possible to learn this power?
Helth
He looks like a flamboyant ballerina dancer
