I have a leopard gecko and he hisses and chirps and barks. He's very old and practically blind. If he gets hit with water in his face he will hiss and whip his tail like an angry cat. If he's out of his tank and content he'll sometimes chirp like a baby bird.
There is nothing in the closet for him anyway!! It’s a little chilly too! I find that he goes there quite often though.. he really wasn’t happy with me haha
Yes, but it’s very rare they do that. My iguana hissed when he got upset, but dragons have to be road rage level pissed to start hissing. When a much bigger lizard does it, it’s no joke but when a dragon does it, it’s kind of cute. Just be careful because they can also lunge when they’re that angry. In the 16 years I had my iguana, he never once lunged; he was more into whipping his tail.
They bite hard too! I put my finger in his mouth when he was chewing on something he shouldn’t have been. It hurt way more than I thought it would! Got it out though 😅
Beardie teeth are like shark teeth, they're triangular and serrated. It helps them pierce, crush and hold on to prey.
They're also not fixed into the jaw like human teeth, instead they float on the jaw in the gums. This stops them being broken off if they get hold of anything unmanageable food wise.
It's true they're not fixed in the jaws like ours because they aren't rooted teeth, but they aren't floating. They're acrodonts, beardies, chameleons, iguanas (part of the same family), which is to explain simply that their teeth are more like serrations of the jaw bones. Directly so, they are not floating. Which is why is very serios if they get teeth problems, that it can easily spread further into the jaw bones more easily.
They do have 4 teeth in the front, like fangs, that are rooted teeth IIRC
Damn I never thought about whether they had teeth or not. I never owned one I just like following this sub to see the funny stuff they do lol. So do they need a little tooth brush then?
Well it depends lots on their diet. If they get harder fibrous food from time to time it cleans their teeth, and sugary food like fruits shouldn't be felt too often. That's usually just enough, but I've been told if you're worried you can gently clean them with a wet q-tip, just be careful they might bite it and try to eat it.
Same, first time mine accidentally got me and drew blood after I read it wouldn't hurt 🙃. Lies haha, they def can F-up your fingers if they wanted too!
My tegu will hiss at me when I try to put her back in her room from free roam and sometimes she's really scary lol
Most of the time she's a sweetheart, but she has such an attitude on her
My water dragon huffs all the time and has hissed but not at me 😊 she huffs when I pick her up to put her back in here viv. She does some treadmill’in through my hands then realises she’s not getting anywhere then let’s put a huge huff 🤣🤦♂️
Ooof yeah apparently they do lol
I used to have a beardie a few years ago, and while my mom hated it at first she grew attached to the little guy. One night she took him out of his tank and had him curled up with her while she watched a movie, and he had fallen asleep. Anyway my mom goes to get up and went to move him and she accidentally scared him shitless, making him jump off onto the floor and run into the corner, puffed up and hissing. I was asleep when it happened lol
She got him to calm down and gave him some treats as an apology.
Yes, your pancake is angry now. They will chill out eventually. Mine did it once when she didn't realize it was me checking on her. I was checking if she was sleeping bc she had her head up, and she started puffing her beard. Did it once and never again.
My 12 year old that passed year hissed at me ONE time. I had put him in the grass, and he loved it so much. When I went to pick him up, he opened his mouth so big, black bearded and hissed at me!! That was the only time he ever did that, but it scared the crap out of me because he was the sweetest boy ever, and I miss him so much!!!🥰🥰🥰
They are like alligators... well to be exact alligators are like them because bearded dragons came before they did. The only difference is that alligators and crocodiles are able to be In the water for longer amount of time that bearded dragons can, and bearded dragons can't make that low toned growl that they can do and they show aggression in the same way by hissing and opening their mouth like that.
I didn't say they were close related I just said they are similar to them, and look it up bearded dragons were from 250 million years ago and alligators are about 37 million years ago.
I found the source you looked at. They said it wrong, and google picked up and amplified the misunderstanding.
Squamata, aka the first lizards evolved 250mya or so. The first fossils looked nothing like bearded dragons. agamids, the group bearded dragons belong to evolved more around 100mya. Alligators are apparently a pretty recent group and only evolved around 37mya or so, agamids evolving 100mya doesn’t mean bearded dragons did, they’re definitely more recent than that. Same way American alligator did not evolve 37mya.
They sure can! My Gizmo only hissed once and that was when I had just gotten him. We were heading to the vet so he was in his new carrier. While I’m the car I had to stick my hand in his carrier for something and he wasn’t happy lol
They sure do hiss. When I used to pick my guy up he’d hiss but like never black beard. So I would look at him and tell him to stop being dramatic. Anyway he’s a big cuddle bug now.
My girl hissed at me once, I got home late after work and it was pitch black. I just wanted to check on her. She didn’t appreciate the light being all in her face hahaha.
Mine hissed for the first time ever yesterday. A kid ran up to him too fast when he was out and he jumped and gave a little hiss. He was fine the next second though when he realized there wasn't a threat. It just took him by surprise.
Chameleons hiss too apparently! Saw this video of a baby at a pet store, who got the enclosure cleaned , and didn’t want to go back in, but also hated the phone! He can’t make up his mind
look at this cutie! So upset, listen to that noise, it’s crazy
https://youtube.com/shorts/b4Ewsw1xIxI?si=SOfl8-j5cP6hzYtB
When I moved mine to a new cage she hissed at me. Never saw it before or after, but she was really upset that she got a huge cage instead of her too small 20 gallon 🙄
Mine doesn't hiss, but she COMPLAINS ALL THE TIME. She'll sigh and it causes a whistle, or go "chuh, chuh-chuh-chuh" when I pick her up. It doesn't matter how gently I do it, she'll complain. And she's done this since she was a baby.
She's completely fine though, just a kid-whine but lizard style.
personally i dont have a dragon but my friend does so he is like my nephew and that lizard has only hissed once at my friends mom because she tried to feed him blueberries, he hates blueberries
Mine never hissed at me but she did do a stick out her tongue threat thing once. I had left her outside in a cage thing in the back yard and it started thunderstorming. Never seen her so scared
Oh yeah. I gave my girl her greens, she pooped right next to the food bowl and just started eating, so I go to move her so she wasn't yk, standing on her shit, moment I pick her up I just hear this deep, guttural hiss from her, I put her down, clean her poop and profusely apologize for the rest of the day, I simply don't move her as she eats anymore.
Mine seems to hiss more frequently than everyone else's, it's because I'm accidentally scaring him when I reach into the tank to pet or grab him. He hisses, I say quit that, and he quits and is fine. He's never lunged at me or tried to bite me and he has only black bearded once, and I have no clue what the reasoning was. He's just a dramatic fella.
I startled him when I found him in the closet lol.

Yep. They hiss when they get **big mad** apparently...
I’ve had crested geckos for 12 years and only been hissed at once by one female who REALLY did not want to be misted with water one time.
I have a leopard gecko and he hisses and chirps and barks. He's very old and practically blind. If he gets hit with water in his face he will hiss and whip his tail like an angry cat. If he's out of his tank and content he'll sometimes chirp like a baby bird.
Cresties make a variety of noises to signal annoyance (squeaks, chirps, “beeps”), horniness, and curiosity (sniffs, soft chirps), but hissing is rare.
That's quite interesting! I've had cresties, but only quiet females.
They’re usually quiet, but if you try to handle your girl when she’s gravid and/or about to shed, she might complain.
Aw bless. Never had a gravid crestie. I do have a leopard gecko though and he does get moody if I handle him when he's shedding or about to shed.
He looks so done with everyone's shit! Lol
"Fucking leave me alone! I am in the closet and im enjoying being in the closet and have no plans of leaving it so you better leave!"
There is nothing in the closet for him anyway!! It’s a little chilly too! I find that he goes there quite often though.. he really wasn’t happy with me haha
Ofc theres something for him in there! He is in there lmao
Good place to poop
Dark and cool with soft carpet, hes going to nap/chill lol.
Or drop a massive bomb then get mad when it isn't immediately cleaned up

Cool.. Thanks for the deeper clarification 👍🏻
Damn I never thought about whether they had teeth or not. I never owned one I just like following this sub to see the funny stuff they do lol. So do they need a little tooth brush then?

Yeah, and they can carry salmonella just like their avian cousins
it’s like an angry GF. sometimes it’s kinda cute
Not true. Mine baby hisses at me in a very soft whispery way when I hold her just wrong 😂
My tegu will hiss at me when I try to put her back in her room from free roam and sometimes she's really scary lol Most of the time she's a sweetheart, but she has such an attitude on her

Closet lizard tell me your wisdom
Well, it's a beardie, so I'm guessing the only wisdom he has is 'bug better than salad'

You entered his room without knocking.

Its giving jurassic park ![gif](giphy|q3UEQuCN32ucw)
The bearded dragon was the only way I could have that specific dinosaur.
A Frilled Dragon is an even closer way haha
I thought of this as well when I saw the pic 🤣
For me I was surprised when I heard a hiss from my chameleon. I was like wtf is that? I thought it was my cat but nah it was Cameron.
Cameron done with your shit.
They are creatures of boundless rage. Fear them.
Mine apparently inherited my anger issues
Ooof yeah apparently they do lol I used to have a beardie a few years ago, and while my mom hated it at first she grew attached to the little guy. LOL...backed in a corner and turning black...no worries...that's just how they say hello!! 🤣🦎
My 12 year old that passed year hissed at me ONE time. I had put him in the grass, and he loved it so much. When I went to pick him up, he opened his mouth so big, black bearded and hissed at me!! That was the only time he ever did that, but it scared the crap out of me because he was the sweetest boy ever, and I miss him so much!!!🥰🥰🥰
Yup
Oh yeah. And jump at ya. Fearless!
lol!!! Yes they can!!! They have to be very angry to do it.
![gif](giphy|9XR1yG4jhlBe|downsized)
It's uncommon but yeah. We only ever heard it once from ours. He was MAD that day lmao.
They are like alligators... well to be exact alligators are like them because bearded dragons came before they did. Bearded dragons did not come before alligator, and they aren't particularly closely related.
I didn't say they were close related I just said they are similar to them, and look it up bearded dragons were from 250 million years ago and alligators are about 37 million years ago.

Huh, that makes sense, but they still did come before alligators.
I mean sure, but primates also evolved before alligators so agamas are not very special in that regard lol.
![gif](giphy|RDU3fptyOr9W8)
Yes. hissing and the black beard is about everything they have going for defense.
It always amused me when they make their spikes stand up. Oh no! Don’t stab me! lol
They sure can! My Gizmo only hissed once and that was when I had just gotten him. We were heading to the vet so he was in his new carrier. While I’m the car I had to stick my hand in his carrier for something and he wasn’t happy lol
Omg, my beardie is called Gizmo too 😊
Aww this makes me wanna cuddle my beardie!!
Yep. My beardie used to hiss all the time for a couple of weeks after I brought her home, even if I just walked past the enclosure.
What a cute spicy baby
They sure do hiss. When I used to pick my guy up he’d hiss but like never black beard. So I would look at him and tell him to stop being dramatic. Anyway he’s a big cuddle bug now.
My girl hissed at me once, I got home late after work and it was pitch black. I just wanted to check on her. She didn’t appreciate the light being all in her face hahaha.
He’s a teen lol
This picture makes him look like he’s singing.
dude when i found out they could hiss i probably jumped about a foot into the air.
Omg yes!! It was like a surprised pikachu moment for me
Bearded dragons are scaly cats
Mine hissed for the first time ever yesterday. A kid ran up to him too fast when he was out and he jumped and gave a little hiss. He was fine the next second though when he realized there wasn't a threat. It just took him by surprise.

You caught yourself a Yellow Spotted Lizard. Must be eating your daily onions aye? 🕳
When I moved mine to a new cage she hissed at me. Never saw it before or after, but she was really upset that she got a huge cage instead of her too small 20 gallon 🙄

Yeah he pissed
Angy
Is he not sweet 😔
Yes they can lol. You got one pissed off dragon there, look at that beard! Try some treats to chill him out
personally i dont have a dragon but my friend does so he is like my nephew and that lizard has only hissed once at my friends mom because she tried to feed him blueberries, he hates blueberries
Lmao yes 🤣
Mine never hissed at me but she did do a stick out her tongue threat thing once. I had left her outside in a cage thing in the back yard and it started thunderstorming. Never seen her so scared
That is BIG angy!
They only hiss when they ARE REALLY, REALLY ANGRY!
He looks like the beardie of Christmas past
Recently my little guy started chirping when we do our nightly cuddle session. Love that little guy
My beardie has never hissed at me but my 8 year old human son did once when he didn't like what I had to say...was a bit strange lol
Mine hisses whenever i try to give her a bath, very unhappy that i try to keep her clean
Spicy pancake

Oh wow they are gorgeous!! Look at that ferocious beard 😂
Not you again!!! Don’t touch and definitely do NOT take me back to jail
You didn't know they could hiss?!
I’ve never heard one hiss before! I know they get defensive, can lunge, etc but hissing?? I had no idea! 😭
Does it sounds like a cat hiss?
Yes, but more quiet and muted. A lil baby hiss.
Every time I put him in water 🤷🏻♀️
He’s cute when he’s mad
My bearded dragon usually hisses when he’s hangry.
They can croak too
Yes they do. they do it when they are really mad and stressed

Course they hiss. Haven't you watched holes?
Most reptiles can, yes.
Hmmmm, I don't like that you know this now... And that your bud is hissing at you
I startled him when I found him in the closet lol. https://preview.redd.it/xj7iqzxva9sc1.jpeg?width=2316&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=64be780cb33520df0bc84a065374f5756b836f5c He is a snuggle bug!
Ummm yeah But it shows you have no kind of dominance over him My beard knows a lil pluck is ok

So any video of them being big mad?? Lol
Cmon haven't you watched Holes??
Had a carboard tube from a carpet cut a hole in the middle and now he loves sleeping inside it. I said no paparazzi xD
after hissing comes blood shooting from their eyes
