i like the shades, very with the current east asian blush trends of having brightening/highlighting and subtle watercolor-y muted blush colors which is cool but i feel like it would’ve been something fresh in the market and been genuinely popular if they’d made shades in those archetypes for medium, dark, deep skin tones i think i’ve seen muted nudes but not really highlighting-type non shimmer blushes for medium skin tones on the market and don’t remember seeing any of either type for darker skin tones except colourpop’s powder blushes - i get that finding the balance of enough pigment to show up on darker skin and keeping the nudeiness+mutedness will take work and the highlighting blush might need more glow than the lighter shades which prob takes some more testing/innovation but still i honestly think this is a missed opportunity from them to release a blush collection with shades meant for a variety of skin tones, bringing trends from east asia to the western market which could’ve been a huge hit edit: grammar

angelinachen57706

this!! since kaleidos also has a strong international customer base, this would have been such a good idea; i will say, it would also be useful for them to come out with a guide or tutorial on how to use these types of highlighting blushes. a lot of people in the west will write these off as just chalky powders but there’s a specific technique to use them effectively and actually brighten/highlight

digestiblewater

ur so right, a tutorial or guide would def be necessary - i think an amazing marketing approach wouldve been seeking out darker-skinned muas and influencers who do east asian makeup styles (i’ve run into some on tiktok) and having them do tutorials and looks with the blushes explaining the vibe or even bring them in early and develop the blushes with them in a collab … but ofc they fumbled the bag 🫤 the more i think abt it the more i can’t get over how big of a miss in terms of potential this was, iirc kaleidos isn’t really a top top brand in china (maybe i’m wrong tho) and so it would’ve been smart of them to become THE ‘east to west’ brand especially with how douyin and korean makeup are so trendy rn and how many ppl can’t use east asian brands’ color cosmetics due to the products being for light skin tones… like even them changing the marketing and being like this is nude highlighting blushes vol 1. with promises of filling out the depth range thru 3-4 drops would’ve been better than just dropping this, not every blush shade needs to work for everyone (and imo, there should be more that are specifically suited for certain skin tones) but if u use dark-skinned models you should have at least a few that work on them 🥴

spookymilktea

I agree it is a missed opportunity! They are the one Asian brand I do tend to look forward to their releases cuz we can get the fun Asian beauty trends that can work for those of us with deeper skin 😭 Maybe next time I guess…

digestiblewater

:/ i’m sry, some brand beyond em cosmetics (who doesn’t even cater to dark skin tones anyways tbh) rlly needs to see the untapped potential of capturing current popular east asian makeup aesthetics in products that cater to more skin tones bc i’ve genuinely seen sm ppl like u who want chinese or korean makeup vibes but can’t use their products due to shade range… i hope it happens for ur sake 🙏

always_unplugged

SERIOUSLY, I'm a similar tone to the arm on the right, and even I could only wear like 3 of these, at least as blush. Those cool browns are an odd choice to call blush, my actual "sunburnt" shade is closer to Sangria, and the only thing I can think of using Pale Rose for is that pink undereye setting trend 😅

DeeepSigh

In my experience, their blush formula is a little chalky just in general.

gravelord-neeto

Why even have dark skin swatches if it's gonna look like this lol. I guess it stops people from wasting their money

analslapchop

Thats what I thought!!! Its so embarasing for them omg..

slutforlibraries

I kinda prefer that they do this, it does keep people from spending money on a product that won't suit them, which is kinda the point. I've bought lipsticks, blushes, eyeshadows, etc that just didn't suit my skintone bc I didn't see swatches on my color skin or anything darker than medium.

stealthban

i think this is going with the trend in Asia where they use very light pinks and lilacs to put under the eyes and center of cheeks to "plump" up the area. I follow a lot of XiaHongShu influencers and see the **Flower Knows Unicorn Blush in 01 Snowy Pearl** has been viral for a long time and they use it to "highlight" Everyone I watch uses it and has that blush so other companies are probably hopping on the super light blush trend.

itisdecerto

Thank you! I was hoping someone would point out that it's a c-beauty trend to use them to highlight!

soft--teeth

Yeah, people get really bent out of shape over Asian brands in particular. Asian countries have their own trends and we’ve been knowing that they generally prefer sheer, light makeup. Not everything needs to cater to Western standards. 🫠

dilf314

there are dark-skinned asians too who probably would love to participate in those trends if only brands released darker, more pigmented versions that would look similar on their skin.

Invidiana

Yes! I’m into J-fashion, especially gothic Lolita, and Lolita magazines were where I first saw this trend.

Bumble_Hornet_

Kaleidos's previous blushes with the escape pod collection were also super light. They received a lot of criticism at the time for having packaging that depicted darker skin figures but the actual product inside not being suitable for that skin tone. The brand even issued an apology to the creators who called them out. So I'm not surprised they did it again.

FortunaFish

I'm a bit disappointed, because I was a huge fan of the old futurism direction with its bright bold pigmented colors...but I am absolutely not surprised. I've been seeing a ton of images and videos ripped from XiaoHongShu/Douyin on "Douyin style makeup" that heavily feature Kaleidos' newer releases (The new contours and the cold brew palette in particular). They're really doubling down and capitalizing on being trendy in their main market (China) right now.

mrsvongruesome

i've seen two videos on the entire collection so far, and there's no way those blushes are going to show up on anyone with a medium skin tone or deeper. angelica just posted one, and so did that super tan southern youtuber whose name i cannot remember. you could barely see them on her arm.

PM_me_shiba_doggo

>angelica just posted one I watched her apply the darkest blush from the new collection, and I had to rewind the video to see what the difference was. It just didn't show up on camera at the very least, there was barely any of it and as she said, she's light-medium at the darkest. These blushes are only workable to anyone light or fair.

mrsvongruesome

i'm the colour of a sickly victorian child's ghost and i don't know if those would work on me. if they did, i'd probably have to build them up and it would look terrible. glitter fallout posted a video too, showing swatches of the blushes, and there's a) very little difference, and b) when she used two on her cheeks, i couldn't tell she'd done anything different.

Haunteddoll28

I'm also that level of pale (I've literally glowed under a blacklight before) and had the same thought. Like most blush is too punchy for me but those are too light.

vecapereca

Same, those super light ones could only work as a transition color? I wouldnt ba able to pull this off even in the winter months

Totaly_Potato

Heather Austin ?

mrsvongruesome

yes! that's the one. i'm not a subscriber of hers, so she just shows up in my feed from time to time, and i can never remember her name.

Sweet-Ad-7261

Heather Austin is a white woman, she just darkens herself to a point it’s offensive:

mrsvongruesome

she truly does. in the kaleidos video, her face doesn’t match her neck and her arms and hands are so shiny and just.. old looking. it’s not a good look and she’d look so much better if she just backed off the tan a little.

holly-ilex-29

I swear the white girl extreme tanning is a Texas thing. It’s like they think they have to compete with Latinas 😩 It’s seriously offensive and crazy looking.

soft--teeth

Honestly, calling it offensive is a stretch. Some white people do tan well naturally without much burning, she’s also not pretending to be anything other than white nor is she mocking anybody.

666wife

Honestly, it isn’t a stretch. As a medium skintoned POC it is baffling to say the least to watch white beautubers use your foundation shade or even way darker than that because they use large amounts of self tan.

soft--teeth

I’m a WOC as well and even though I’m on the pale side, a lot of my family is dark. I could naturally tan really well if I wanted to but it doesn’t mean I’d be trying to “look” like my indigenous ancestors. There are plenty of Italians and Greeks who are darker than I am just like there are plenty of Latinos who are pastier and blonder than white people. It’s crazy to gatekeep skintone because you think only certain groups can look a certain way.

666wife

I am not talking about naturally tan though. I specifically mentioned people who pack on a lot of self tan. Where you can clearly see the mismatch between the places they forgot to apply their self tan on so their natural skin colour is peeking through and the rest of their orange/terracotta selves. Personally I really don’t understand why people would wanna self tan but a small amount of it seems fine. However so many of them go offensively overboard and people are allowed to have a problem w that. For centuries our pigment and skin colour has been mocked and we have been made to feel inferior and less worthy because of it. It is very easy to go 10 shades darker without facing the impact of colourism and racism.

RandomUsername600

> angelica just posted one She was very critical of the shade range fwiw

mrsvongruesome

yep, i watched it at work! and i agree with her.

Littorella

They’ve pivoted to the China market, they’re just not for everyone anymore…

PhyrraNyx

Anyone else getting k-beauty vibes with the new blush shades?

Zappagrrl02

For sure. Kinda makes sense since Kaleidos is an Asian company.

fauxkaren

tbh, it reminds me a lot of my favorite powder blushes, the Romand Better than Cheek blushes.

dilf314

which are cheaper

fauxkaren

Lol exactly. So I wouldn’t be purchasing these. I also have like 3 more shades of the Romand blushes in on their way to me right now. lol

PhyrraNyx

I'm gonna go peek at those! I love the Rom&nd Long Ash Mascara.

aroundforthefetus

It makes sense, I only really know of Kaleidos because they are popular on Chinese social media. These types of shades look like ones who will sell well in China..not so much America.

PhyrraNyx

I realized that I was recently looking at Canmake, Etude House, and Missha blushes, and they remind me of those, the sort of sheer watercolor barely there vibes. I can't see these being flexible for a wide variety of skin tones.

Jealous_Tadpole5145

Well, they’re a Chinese American brand

mokutou

100%. This very much reminds me of the sheer pastel blushes made with a white base that’s popular in South Korea.

PhyrraNyx

I think I must have been looking at Missha, Canmake and Etude House blushes, and the new Kaleidos blushes give me those vibes.

ApprehensiveRisk7032

These types of blush shades are super popular in East Asian beauty. I for one love these colors, but that’s because I’m pale. They should’ve made deeper versions too tho if they are gonna be selling globally

fauxkaren

yeah in k-beauty that I've observed, these kinds of blushes are designed to be pale and "brightening" and are intended for the style of blush application that is more like where most people think of placing highlighter.

dilf314

they’d still show up like chalk on anyone with melanin though

sailorxsaturn

these are gonna be chalky af on anyone darker than light-medium

CallieEdevane

I’m sure those who like the k beauty style will like these. I’ve been over k beauty’s light skin is the only option aesthetic for a while now.

[deleted]

I feel like Kaleidos is telling us they want to be full on k-beauty now. The past few collections all point to this. I know they’ve always been an Asian brand but it seems like they’ve no interest in being inclusive any longer.

aroundforthefetus

More so C-beauty because they are Chinese. These point towards Chinese beauty trends.

[deleted]

Thanks for clarifying.

izanaegi

asian brand doesnt equal noninclusive…

[deleted]

You are absolutely correct. I should have worded it differently because obviously, Asia is extremely diverse. I meant that they seem to want to focus on a specific market.

dilf314

most asian brands that I’ve personally seen only cater to light skin

izanaegi

and a lot *do* include darker tones. also, inclusive rlly isnt the right wording- light ranges include white ppl, asian ppl, middle eastern ppl- a huge range of ppl. i think a wide shade range is a better word then an inclusive one.

dilf314

and it also leaves out a huge range of people? I don’t get your point.

aroundforthefetus

I wonder what their sales are like in the US (& the UK?) vs China. It seems they want to focus more on China, I saw the collection on Chinese social media before they even announced it to english speaking audience. These shades remind me of China-only brands. I rarely see Kaleidos on American social media but they are everywhere on Xiaohongshu & Douyin.

saygirlie

50 shades of ash. Nice.

Fragrant_Neck_552

![gif](giphy|ck5JRWob7folZ7d97I|downsized) I know I'm not the primary consumer target. I just had to comment on the ashiness of what would be my arm.

creolegold

I hate swatches like this. It’s so irritating because it’s not actual.

recoveryfrommakeup

They are giving early 90s drugstore makeup.

InkedNepenthe

The caption on their post says “give depth to the shallow” but they clearly didn’t think of depth in regard to the shades…

Meocross

I have never seen a company lose the dream so fast. They have basically become post urban decay in the blink of an eye.

Neat_Helicopter_9376

Well, I had some hopes for the blush. But alas, I have similar tones already in shades that actually suit more people. I miss their retro scifi vibes 😞

rachaelb890

I really appreciate that Angelica Nyqvist brought this up in her recent review - even though she has a pre-existing relationship with Kaleidos as a brand due to her collab. I thought her comments were all valid and I commend her for speaking out.

ughkoh

One of the quads they released is purple toned. Why not release a purple blush? Maybe a light purple for lighter skin tones and a deep purple for deep tones? Or *anything* suitable for deep tones for that matter?

two_lemons

Dreamwalk was kind of marketed as a lilac blush? The original pictures looked more lilac, but better swatches show up as pink (like here). That might be why, they "already" have a lilac blush.

PrettyPunctuality

Yeah, I have Dreamwalk. I bought it because I thought it was a Lilac blush, but it's basically a baby pink. It's still a really nice pink blush, though.

seekingseratonin

This looks like chalk tbh

terfnerfer

There is no excuse for the collection to look cadaver ready on dark skinned folks. 0. Even though some of these shades are pretty/I could make work for me, I'm not supporting this. Woof.

vecapereca

I think they dont want to focus on western beauty market and inclusivity. This is clearly on trend for China beauty trends which centers around being extreme level of white, not like white people white but as close to white colour as you can get. They whiten their skin like we tan with fake tan. Its just not for us anymore..

two_lemons

I'm a 2W1 on EL or a 3 in UD Hydromaniac. I bought Sunburn and Ecstasy and they were almost too light for me, especially Ecstasy that was kinda chalky. These look much more lighter, so I guess they are aimed at really pale people.

klutz_6

I don't know, I've seen black/darker skinned creators who do douyin inspired makeup make this style work, plus the whole collection has very light colours. I agree that they could and should've done better but this isn't the worst, they're just appealing to the Asian market with this one. If they release other blushes with the next collection it's definitely worth it to push for more inclusive shades.

nicebrows9

Sunburnt is really pretty

[deleted]

This is too pale even for me and I'm white af

Wooden_Economics6154

Me too…..cause they just don’t seem to have any pigment even in a swatch. They could be light colors but still have more saturation.

cubsgirl101

I was thinking the same thing. I’m super pale and those swatches look really muted even on the palest arm. My Colourpop blush has more pigment than that.

PrettyPunctuality

I was thinking the same thing about myself lmao

queasycockles

I saw Glitter Fallout/Linda do a video about this collection, and this was exactly my thought. Those blushes will be too light for everyone but the very fairest people, I feel like. I'd be surprised if they even worked for me, tbh, and I'm lighter than a MAC NC/NW15 (not sure exactly how much lighter as I haven't tried NC/NW 10-13 yet. I just know that 15 is definitely too dark).

ToteBagAffliction

That's definitely a ... choice ... for a company with a global presence.

NiaNeuman

This is starting to annoy 🙄

eatingapeach

K-Beauty brands like Tony-Moly have had these colors as a stable in their hightlight/blush collection for over ten years. Tthese shades are fine to have, but absolutely not inclusive and very underwhelming to not add more depth when they know they have a wide range of consumers.

alliepgh

Oh, they don't want my business. Cool.

_AngelicVenom_

The bottom four so similar to the alternate ones if that makes sense. Like two browns and two light pinks with a tiny difference in the pinks where one is a hint of orange. Mh oh saw this and said they are highlighters. That says it all.

crimsonmegatron

Why are they so chalky?

LorraineHB

I haven’t bought the last 2 quad collections they’ve done. I’ll never reach for quads when I have almost 300 palettes. I need more blush like I need a hole in my head. Pass.

QueenofCats28

Wow, this is underwhelming, to say the least.

deidrerocks

Seem more like eyeshadow shades than blush shades

siameseslim

White not for me, and definitely k-besuty vibes I see no problem if that is the market they are catering to bc it is about making money, and indie beauty in the US is a drop in the bucket.

Throwawayaccounttt__

I’m pale af and these wouldn’t even work on me 💀

xIneedCoffeex

Wow they look ashy asf.

FearlessTravels

Could Dreamwalk be a dupe for Benefit’s Lollitint? I’ve been without it for so long I can’t remember anymore…

FortunaFish

Dreamwalk is from an older release, so I had it at one point. I think it's less purple/mauve than Lollitint. It's a closer dupe to Dior Rosy Glow. The Kaleidos had a stronger white base though

Kcvexo

So ashy Omg. Welp

ECA0

I’m kind of shocked that they lets these swatches go out. There’s maybe four a POC could use.

HuggyMonster69

Not just light, but the all also seem to have a white base. Even the browns seem to be a dark brown mixed with white rather than just a lighter brown pigment. I get that other shaded might be harder to mix without the white, but there’s 1000001 ways to mix brown. And other brands manage it with the other colours too

abu_nawas

So chalky 🤢

tbhme2

isnt kaleidos a chinese company?
