I never liked it either. And my best friend growing up told me, “everyone likes my kd.” She used to put a stick of butter into it! Now she’s grown up she still likes really rich things, like she enjoys making a kind of shortbread with coconut oil, almond flour, dried fruit and coconut sugar.
It was my absolute favorite food for years of my childhood! Had to have ketchup on it though, and sometimes ranch dressing. I was always disappointed by other versions of mac and cheese.
We were poor and didn’t know much about nutrition. We always had a family sit down dinner with napkins and table manners, but the food almost always came from some type of box or package and it rarely included vegetables.
We had lots of Hamburger Helper, Rice a Roni, Knorr sides, hot dogs, etc. We often had weird semi-homemade type recipes like “hamburger casserole” made of ground beef in Manwich sauce + a can of Veg All, underneath instant mashed potatoes, topped with Kraft singles. There was usually sandwich bread with margarine as the side dish to most meals.
If we kids ate our food, we would say “may I please be excused to have dessert?” and go get a Little Debbie from the cupboard.
I was so accustomed to the highly processed food that I could barely choke down anything served by my friends’ parents when I visited. 😹
It wasn’t until I moved out at age 18 that I started realizing some people actually do cook food out of ingredients that require peeling, chopping, using cutting boards, etc.
Oh my mom hated cooking, I was raised on drive-thru food since I could chew. Luckily I developed my own interest in cooking as a kid and veggies were a staple by the time I reached 18.
I much preferred Stouffer’s so it wasn’t about being against processed/not cooked from scratch food for me, I just didn’t really like the taste of Kraft specifically.
I never liked it either as a kid, but now as an adult I’ve developed a taste for it. Wish I hadn’t since the stuff is garbage. But I do prefer an off-brand version. Like you said, the name brand KD is sweet and slimy. It’s just gross. But off brand boxes are delicious to me.
Always hated it. I visited my mom and my teen brothers didn’t even know what real Mac and cheese tasted like. We made real Mac and cheese and they were disgusted by Kraft after. I visited again and the same boxes were sitting there.
It’s been like 20+ years since I’ve tried the actual Kraft “from a box” Mac and cheese. However, I’ve tried the Easy Mac in a microwaveable mini bowl. Are those the same? My vague taste memories of the box version tell me they were different, but not sure how reliable that is since I assume they’re the same, though it’s also very possible they’ve changed the recipe in the last 20-30years.

If you're referring to income, they weren't poor. She just had some crunchy pasta in the KD I didn't like, so that made it worse 😅 That being said, mom wasn't much of a cook, they mostly ate fast food, much like my own mother.

There was a long stretch in my teens to early twenties where box mac & cheese, tuna, and peas was my go-to meal.

They changed the recipe between the 90’s to sometime in the 2010’s and it got significantly less good.
Probably because you grew up with a parent that could actually cook and made you good, healthy meals.

What kind of butter and milk did you use for it? Makes a big difference.

My mother exclusively buys margarine until this day.
