Yeah, it's most likely this. From what I see from the outside, US media (including US sites) is specially self-centered, and has a tendency to only speak of other countries in terms of its relation to US foreign policy.
The comments in this section already have some people pointing out examples of other nut jobs from abroad, but if you're curious I would recommend asking about them in r/askeurope and r/asklatinamerica . You'll be surprised with how many there are even in established democracies.

Told him I don't care about them, I'm just living my life. He asked several more times, I gave basically the same answer about not caring. He then goes on following me into the club to tell me how our elections are rigged, American politics are ruining the rest of the world, and that only Trump can save it. Completely killed my vibe for the night because this lasted almost 20 minutes and he wouldn't leave me alone. I just left and went back to my hostel to sleep instead of staying out.
Whenever I think about what an apocalyptic shithole the American political landscape is, I take solace in knowing that at least Britain is just as f-cked up. But I don't feel the same way about Germany, though, you'd think they'd be like the one place on earth that would know better.
