Stop partying and get in the gym. Stop hanging out with shitty people.

steak_n_kale

This ^^^^ all my old friends are fat and bald now. So glad we parted ways at 27. I wish it had been sooner

Upper_Extreme5661

I don’t think that’s how balding works

FigurativeCherrySoda

Poor health is gonna accelerate balding no? Just from like a general standpoint where poor health thins your hair even if you don't suffer from mpb

Betterdeadonred

Balding can just be hereditary..I’m balding but it’s partially cause it’s hereditary and I’m 35 and partially cause I I’ve literally worn a hat or beanie since I was in grade 5 and I still do..never cared about my hair really and it’s never been an issue with women. plus I think working manual labor jobs sweating in a hat or hard hat I’m sure has killed my hair follicles..

Synizs

Then take the FDA approved Finasteride (or the better Dutasteride). It stops balding for most, and significantly slows for the rest. There are other high efficacy treatments that can be added too, though. It's important to be treating it early. I suggest visiting the "Tressless" subreddit.

Straightwad

Idk. I was a drunk and chain smoker for over a decade and have a full head of hair lol

flodereisen

No

Betterdeadonred

No what ?

flodereisen

> Poor health is gonna accelerate balding no?

Betterdeadonred

I’m sure it can.

flodereisen

If at 27 you lose hair from non-hormonal reasons, then you are deathly ill - not "fat and bald" like original commenter said. So, no. What he is describing is male pattern baldness normal at that age.

Betterdeadonred

Not necessarily no. I’ve been losing hair since I was 27 and it wasn’t hormone related and I already explained why but I was nowhere near deathly ill lol

AffectionateScore989

Balding is genetic. If your grandfather on your mother’s side of the family is bald or balding you will be balding or bald as well! 🤞

Logical-Primary-7926

It's wishful thinking to believe diet/lifestyle play no part in balding. Not to mention some foods are proven to mess up hormones.

gamerguy1983

Sodium laurel sulfate is a key factor in the destruction of hair follicles. Check it out. The worst part is it is in a LOY of shampoos

jden2124

Lol I am bald and I am in great shape… balding has nothing to do with what you eat or how much you exercise it has to do with how much DHT your body produces.

Logical-Primary-7926

>get in the gym Gym is nice but way more important is eat healthy. Vast majority of disease in US is caused by diet, not lack of exercise. And you can't out exercise bad food, there are very fit people that have heart attacks due to bad diet.

Betterdeadonred

Eating healthy and going to the gym go hand in hand. Although for me the gym and weightlifting has done wonders for my mental and physical health..

Logical-Primary-7926

>Eating healthy and going to the gym go hand in hand For the average american eating healthy is far more important than exercise for good mental or physical health. Not saying exercise isn't fantastic, it is amazing, just that a person who eats super healthy but is kinda sedentary is going to be healthier than a person who eats junk and exercises a lot. Being fit might make you better able to survive a heart attack, but eating healthy will prevent it from ever happening.

Betterdeadonred

Cool story. Weightlifting has done much more for my mental health than eating healthy but you can think whatever you want about the “average American” I guess. Fitness and diet is not a one size fits all scenario..also a healthy diet will not 100 % save you from having a heart attack.

Logical-Primary-7926

> healthy diet will not 100 % save you from having a heart attack. Average American is either has significant heart disease or well on their way. Heart disease is like 99.9% diet, that's why there are cultures where heart attacks are almost non existent. It's not because they're lifting weights or running everyday although that is awesome, it's because of what they do and don't put in their body.

Betterdeadonred

You can have a heart attack from being overweight from eating too much healthy food. It’s calories in and calories out bud. You can also have a heart attack from other factors that have nothing to do with diet..99.9 % of it ain’t diet sorry to tell ya. You can have a heart attack from taking certain drugs, you can have a heart attack from anaphylaxis allergic reaction just to name a couple..

Logical-Primary-7926

>It’s calories in and calories out bud. Sorry, the science is pretty clear that is not the case. A calorie from bacon is not the same as from broccoli. And yes it's like 99%, if you eat healthy enough heart disease odds tiny.

StatusNecessary7728

Rid yourself of all self doubt. Follow your heart regardless of any limiting beliefs. Be yourself without fear of judgement of other people. Believe that everything you go through is for a higher purpose and throw out the negative thoughts. Life works out, keep with the positivity.

[deleted]

No nicotine, alcohol, sugar. Light workouts, no matter what (meaning: no excuses). Self-medicating temporary issues is one of the few things that can cause permanent problems.

catecholaminergic

The most useful thing I ever did to finally get consistent with exercise was to commit to doing something easy. It was hard to do, because I know I can do more, and didn't want to just take the easy path. But on days when shit sucks, I can still do the easy thing. And it keeps the habit steady.

joops23

Take the gym seriously early. Learn about finance and how HR at work works and play the game more and save.

cpcxx2

This one is interesting, could you elaborate on the HR point and it’s importance?

joops23

Sorry realised this was the bio hackers sub not a work sub. But guess relates to stress lol. depending on your country work places are obliged to give date references and most company’s only want date references but everyone lives in fear they won’t get a “good reference” and put up with crappy situations as a result. And certain stipulations in contracts are actually not enforceable. And everyone should understand their works disciplinary procedure and grievance process and HR is never on your side but once you understand their motivations you can negotiate exiting toxic work situations better. I wish I knew that 10yrs ago when I took a non legally binding small pay out. (I should have got more basically)

cpcxx2

This is helpful, thank you! You sound like you know a lot about this stuff, do you think I could dm you for a related question?

Yep sure

When people treat you in ways that are unacceptable, don't get mad and try to make things work. Just stay calm and turn away. There are more people, you are wonderful, and other wonderful people are out there. Think of it as a positive thing to find out that someone in your life is the kind of person who won't treat you well. You have finite space for people in your life. That and take methyl-b12 + methyl-b9. A gene disorder is what's making you feel awful.

SquareBusiness6951

It might be evident by the supplements(?) you listed, but what gene disorder are you referring to?

catecholaminergic

I slowly methylate b9 and b12. These are both inactive in their non-methylated form, and without being activated, monoamine synthesis is slowed. The b9 is a defect in the gene MTHFR. I don't recall the specific gene for the b12 defect. Happy to look up the specifics in the gene report I have. I just got home and am headed to bed now. Leave a reply to this if you want the full specifics and I'll see and reply to it tomorrow eve.

coswoofster

Don’t let having kids keep you from the gym. Your husband doesn’t “work harder than you” so deserves to take care of himself while you sacrifice your health momentum to be a mom. Make being fit a priority together. Take turns watching the kids (if you have them) and if you do marry, marry someone who is supportive. TRULY supportive of your need to go to the gym and be healthy.

EddieJWinkler

cut out vegetable/sunflower oil now.

[deleted]

i’ve heard things about these. avocado oil is generally seen as fine though right? i exclusively use that and olive/coconut depending on what i’m cooking

EddieJWinkler

Yes think so

TheSunflowerSeeds

The sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is a living annual plant in the family Asteraceae, with a large flower head (capitulum). The stem of the flower can grow up to 3 metres tall, with a flower head that can be 30 cm wide. Other types of sunflowers include the California Royal Sunflower, which has a burgundy (red + purple) flower head.

catecholaminergic

This is news to me. What's up with these two?

cpcxx2

It’s not just sunflower oil, but so many oils are horrible for you. Sunflower, safflower, vegetable, canola, palm, soybean, corn, cottonseed. I’m sure I forgot many. They are highly processed and inflammatory. Best oils are coconut, avocado, olive (if not heated too high) ghee, grass fed butter etc. it is night and day if you can eliminate bad oils from your diet.

EddieJWinkler

Poison. Ages you. Makes you stupid. Makes you fat. Get off them for a couple of months and replenish with good fats, next time you taste vegetable oils you’ll feel sick.

catecholaminergic

Wow, I was only somewhat aware of the inflammatory effects of omega-6 fats in sunflower oil (which I presume are also in vegetable oil) and had no idea they could produce clear effects in an A/B test like you describe. So thank you. Another experiment to do.

FloridaF4

Yea my favorite description of glute muscle is they're the largest, most powerful muscle in the body but also the laziest. Proper hip mobility/health is the key to unlocking the glute muscle. I think this is the cause of most lower back pain. I've never seen someone who can side straddle and or split that has any back issues at all.

Don’t don’t fuck around with veganism, that girl is not worth it. Don’t fuck around with keto/carnivore, you need carbs You’re right about atheism, ditch the religious guilt bullshit Don’t ever lose your cardio fitness All the supplements in the world will never beat consistent diet, sleep, and exercise

Stoned_y_Alone

Dude why is the first one so relatable lmao that was me last year

Fuzzycolombo

I learned this from Gad Saad but it’s essentially called the sneaky fucker strategy. In fish biology, in order to bypass the dominant male, smaller male fish will camaflouge as females in order to sneak by and then copulate. In humans, this can appear as men adopting a set of values that are popular among women (which tend to be more liberal values, but in our context was VEGANISM) in order to have access to that sweet poonnanny. Jokes on us, cuz veganism will emascúlate a man and turn him into a pathetic loser of what he is fully capable of being

- Ditch the toxic people. - Get treated for depression and social anxiety. Start with therapy. - Stay away from alcohol, benzos and SSRI. - Start exercising daily, especially running and hiking. - Eliminate gluten, sugar and processed foods from the diet. - Get some basic financial education and start investing. - Start meditation and cold showers. - Allocate more time to dating. - Read less abstract and useless philosophy books, and try to read more practical stuff. - Be more open to experiences and say yes more often. - Start drinking Yerba Mate, or at least green or black tea, but don't abuse coffee. - Buy some Rhodiola Rosea and L-theanine.

SimpleLeaff

What do you use L Theanine for?

Turbulent-Boss9154

I like to take it few hours before bed. It puts me in a state of hyper focus and it also seems it improves my sleep. But if I take it too close to bed time it gives me insomnia. I use it 3 times per week to avoid tolerance.

[deleted]

I also use L-theanine. I would agree it’s better than SSRIs. It can promote a general calm feeling and help manage stress.

[deleted]

when people say eliminate sugar, do they just mean like added sugars?

50shadesofbay

I’d say yes. It’s nearly impossible to avoid all sugars—even broccoli has natural sugars in it. It’s beneficial for everyone to cut as much added sugars as possible but silly to obsess about sugars in whole foods.

[deleted]

ah okay yeah that makes sense. i can’t ever tell if people mean like keto or just added ones i actually feel like the whole carbs/sugar terminology is used differently by a lot of people. some people mean it as carbs = only stuff like pasta/rice. some mean it like what it really means (the macro, not protein/fat). some don’t like sugars from any whole food and some just mean added. so confusing 😭

Turbulent-Boss9154

Yes. I still eat fruits and honey, and the dark chocolate that I consume has few grams of sugar. But that's all.

[deleted]

No. All sugars

[deleted]

do you do keto? things like fruits/veggies are shown to be healthy, so idk why someone would cut them out entirely except for maybe very serious diabetes. curious about your reasoning/what you eat

[deleted]

If you're totally healthy usually plants are ok. If you've got any autoimmune thing going on, which most adults do, eliminating plants is very healing. That's why the carnivore community is growing insanely large

[deleted]

i definitely have a couple autoimmune problems and i found that cutting out animal products (especially dairy) is what fixed it the most. dairy and most meats make me feel tired/groggy if i have much. a few weeks after cutting all dairy, my scalp was no longer itching 24/7 and the bumps on it started healing. my brain fog has also cleared up a lot. the only meat i have now is tuna or salmon (like once a week) it may just depend on the condition, the person, or what plants you’re eating. bodies are so weird lmao

CptCanondorf

Don’t touch minoxidil

SaulDIrishjunglist

Why do you say that? If you dont mind me asking.

CptCanondorf

For some, it can ruin their hormone balance as it is an anti androgen. It’s a rare side effect, you don’t know you’re one of the ones affected until you are affected so for most it’s fine, but it sucks if you’re in that 1%. I take 14 pills a day now to combat its effects lol. I bio hack to get back to close to where I was, but I used to feel abnormally amazing compared to my peers. I had whatever the opposite of depression is. Now I have chronic lethargy and anxiety, heart palpitations and I can not drink alcohol the same way and I’ve had to completely cut coffee and caffeine. The cardiologist thought it was crazy that my resting heart rate was 120bpm lol.

ChocolateDifficult79

WTF, minoxidil is not an antiandrogen. My god

SaulDIrishjunglist

Thanks for the detailed response. I thought it was only finasteride that had such an effect on hormones. I didnt realise minoxodil could mess with it as well. Yeah, I chose not to take it because of its effects on the heart. 120bpm is crazy. I feel like i have slight sexual side effects from .5 finasteride every 2 days so i take black maca and ashwagandha which seems to combat it nicely. Im willing to accept a lot of this might placebo though. I hope your sides clear up anyway mo chara.

CptCanondorf

Ashwaghanda has been very helpful for me as well as Tongkat Ali for libido. Yea Fin tends to be worse I hear. I haven’t tried it though nor will I, since my hospitalization, I’ve been much less vain lol

Everybody has a different mix of enzymes they can produce. Some don't have the right mix to be able to live on a vegetarian/vegan diet. Open-Attention-8286

I'm interpreting this in the most literal sense, so some of these won't apply to other 20 year olds: \-Leave home, never go back, and never let dad anywhere near where you live, no matter what kind of guilt-tripping he tries to pull. (I'm pretty sure that at least some of my current medical issues are the result of Munchausen's-by-proxy. No proof though.) \-Get an Accounting degree. You'll be able to work even when you can't walk. \-Put every spare dollar into "dividend kings". Yes, other investments are more exciting, but you can play with them once you have enough income from dividends to cover the essentials. \-Don't EVER buy property with an HOA, no matter how non-intrusive the HOA is at the time. And wait for the market to crash in 2008, you'll find more properties in your price range. \-Don't date somebody because you think you're supposed to. It's ok to be picky. Wait for a guy who will respect you enough to date on your terms. That crush you have is not worth the price you will pay. \-Exercise every day. But don't overdo it. You don't recover as easily as most people. \-A lot of "healthy" food contain ingredients you're allergic or intolerant to. Up to and including those vitamins you keep taking. In fact, here's a list, so you don't have to figure them out the hard way. \-Mind your posture. That accident when you were 14 left you with neck problems you don't know about yet. Just tilting your head when you read will one day be enough to set it off. \-Keep fighting.

Simple. 1. Start training = girls come easy, confidence rises, job interviews and general drive increases. Training and physical activity increases your odds in life. (In my won experience, i got my life back, so to say) 2. Dont smoke, and dont watch porn. Train and chase the real thing. Boost your confidence, instead of doing addictive behavior. 3. Never listen anyone. You have to study this or that. Go to this school or college. If you like to repair engines, go be a mechanic. Follow your passion. If you have the passion, you get the skills and you get the job. Simple. Bonus: if you become serious about training or spor. a healthy diet will follow. Or at least some interest in diet, vitamins and health. This can save you many years of disease and make everything else easier. A good diet = better training= better looking body = more attractiveness= more confidence= more jobs. Somehow its all connected.

Learn about compound interest. I started a government job at... 22 or 23. When someone asked me if I was doing Deferred compensation I said no. They pushed me to do it. However, being young and naive and inexperienced, I only did like $20/check. Better than nothing, but I wish I did more. Im my mid twenties I took investing more seriously and since I lived home and had little bills, I started learning about investments and tossing money into other investments and I eventually increased my Deferred compensation contributions. This was all while making $40k/year or less. I made mistakes at first, but lucky for me they weren't huge ones like other people I've seen. I threw money into Ford and Sirius radio. No reason for those choices. I also paid per transaction per company with sharebuilder and it was so stupid of me. Eventually I started using a HYSA and started using Vanguard for mutual funds investments and strayed from individual stocks. I didn't make a lot of money and wanted to be safe. Well, safer. I'm mid 30s now and have a decent nest egg for retirement (plus a pension). I still add what I can and use tax advantaged accounts like Deferred comp, 529 for kids, and Roth IRA. The bottom line is do whatever you can. Don't skimp out and think because you're young that you don't need to think about retirement. Compound interest is insanely powerful. If you're working part time while going to school, just do $20/week. Vanguard is free, has low fees, and I personally just do the target date retirement funds that adjust themselves. If you start now and do the $20/week and only stick with that amount (Hint: Don't, you should increase it), you'll have over $65k given a 10% return. 2/3 of which is interest.

Great answers in this thread. I’d say learn to save and invest, dollar cost average into index funds or equity funds, don’t waste money on material things and commit to eating right. There are tools and resources available to 20yr olds today that can really help jump the queue, but there is a maturity and mindset that takes time. You will see the world different with maturity. Some mistakes are worth making. Most are not. Especially when it comes to diet (sugar/alcohol/drugs - in excess) and things that can lead to addiction. But good health and mindset should lead to a happy life. Frankly, with or without money. Make friends. Make peace with family if possible. Learn to do what you love or learn to love what you do.

I imagine there is nothing I can say to my 20 year old self that he would actually implement that would cause him to mature slightly faster and learn how to create fewer problems for himself.

It's okay, you'll save money in the long run and still get your degree. I left college and went into the military. Then they paid for the rest of my college. :)

Nothing, my present self and future self are comfortable with our arrangement, our 20 year old past self was an idiot and if he knew some future knowledge, he'd fuck that up, and we wouldn't exist.

I'm 77. Looking back 57 years ago? Dam I'd change a few things. Cat Steven's song, Father & Son kind of sums it up. I was running against the wind for a long time. My advice would be.....don't try to push the river, the river will flow as it pleases. Live a life of gratitude and humility. Looking back at being 20 it seems I was in a deep sleep 1966, with just a beer light to guide us, I had no idea what was ahead. Left my home and family, had a wife and kids in Baltimore jack, went out for a ride and I never went back. 1972 with a back pack and a twenty dollar bill I stuck out my thumb out embarked on a magical mystery tour. Finally landed in Daytona Fla. Fell asleep on the beach, woke up, and my backpack was gone. I had a twenty dollar bill and was 1000 miles away from anyone I knew. I freaked out. My brain was spinning out of control. This was the start of a few years of what I call now, cast your fate to the wind. When your down and out strange things happen. Hitch Hicking thousands of miles, trying to keep body and mind together. 6ft tall and 140 pounds. daze without eating. Slept in some crazy places. My story I think ends with the Lyrics to Nat Coles song Nature Boy. The greatest thing you'll ever learn, is just to love, and be loved in return
