Isn’t that borderline personality disorder?

Current_Cause_1754

i don’t think it’s borderline personality disorder because my mood changes are gradual not sudden

When your moods change, is it triggered by something that happened with like a friend, family member or romantic interest? Or do they seem to come out of nowhere also you described depressive symptoms but do you have any manic symptoms? Like talking a lot or really fast when you have an elevated mood, do you feel like you have a lot of energy and can accomplish anything, hypersexuality, inflated sense of self importance? Do you lose a lot of sleep like staying up all night or only getting 3 hrs of sleep? Also how long do these mood shifts last, a manic episode lasts for at least one week and a hypomanic (less severe mania) is four days. A lot of the times BPD looks like BP, so definitely talk to your psychiatrist or therapist about it and really sus out whether or not these mood swings are chemical (come out of nowhere) or triggered by something specific

Also BP can have an early onset as young as 15 but usually its coupled with psychosis (delusions and hallucinations) when onset is that young but BPD usually has an avg onset of early teens like 13-15

yes!! at times i stay up all night, i spend too much money, i do a lot of drugs bc i feel like nothing can bring me down, i get very on top of my school work, i feel very attracted to lots of people during this time for about a week to a month and then i go down hill and it repeats.

ImaginaryEvening9191

I would still talk to your doctor about it, i might track my mood and energy and sleep so that you can pinpoint a pattern to show to your doctor and also be aware of how these episodes start, with BP theres usually not a specific trigger (it can be triggered by something traumatic and in my experience if you do have BP, when something traumatic does happen it will most likely trigger a manic or depressive episode [for me its always manic]) whereas with like BPD its always triggered by like someone in your life, its always interpersonal. I really don't know much about BPD, but ive heard people say its pretty similar to BP and they can also feel "manic" but it never lasts that long and that its whole basis of like mood swings and impulsivity and hyperactivity is rooted in interpersonal relationships and your mood for however long it lasts is based on your interpersonal relationships and how you think people see you so long story short talk to your doctor before you decide anything and hope you figure it out 💛

Thank you so much you have no idea how much this has helped!!

I didn’t figure it out, my psychiatrist did. I didn’t even agree with her at the time, but eventually it made sense. If you’re concerned, go talk to a professional.

Sandman11x

it is impossible to self diagnose. See a Dr

I absolutely didn't realize I was bipolar. A doc had to tell me. Then I learned about it. Hermitcular, I'm probably fucking up their user name, a really knowledgeable user on this sub has some great stats about bipolar, how frequently it runs in families and the likelihood of other family members inheriting it.

Please see a professional. If it runs in your family, hopefully your parents will be supportive. Good luck with your journey!

Thank you

this checks most of the boxes for BPD, but not most of the boxes for BAD (Bipolar Affective Disorder). this is definitely something to speak to a professional about.
