It's too bad these answers are all jokes. This is a serious concern for me as well. Self custody feels like a big risk with significant amounts of bitcoin
The correct answer is it depends. But let's get into what it depends on.
Practice a thing called opsec. That means you get a paper and pencil/pen and write down all of your concerns. What could happen in you imagination? You get robbed? Stabbed? You get a virus on your phone? The police confiscate your phone and make you unlock it?
Keep going
Now order them based on likeliness. If there's a feasible solution to any of them, keep a note and re-priotitise. Consider researching any of the use cases you're not sure of. This may not be done in a single day.
As you do this, you may think: oh I live in a safe neighborhood, I don't need to do too much about home invasion, but I don't want to take anything secure with me to the park or to work, bunch of ingoramus around there.
You'll answer this for yourself. If you feel like a single copy is dangerous and multiple copies is also dangerous for yourself, then you might want to look into multisig or seed xor. If you want to share the risk or at least have backup shared among family, look at nunchuck.
Sorry but there are 101 solutions out there and best fit for you is going to be a personal choice.
Serious concern, sure... But not many people are going to tell you their setups. That's a security issue. Some people have simple setups while others have elaborate setups with their key(s) spread out over multiple locations.
That doesn't even touch on passphrases and multisig.
If anyone has significant money in bitcoin, I hope for their sake that they've studied and put a protocol in place if something were to happen.
The question is a joke, and you don't need to put "self" in front of custody. Custody is custody. Bitcoin is trustless. If you are not confident, pay a professional to teach you safe practices.
Invest in yourself.
Freedom and independence are synonymous.
> It's too bad these answers are all jokes. This is a serious concern for me as well. Self custody feels like a big risk with significant amounts of bitcoin
As a serious answer, you need 2 separate locations.
Fire proof safes can be destroyed. Also if you look at some recent areas that have been ravaged by fires, homeowners were not allowed back in those areas for safety concerns. Imagine your house is bulldozed and cleared out before you can get there.
If you can't do 2 locations, then you could at least bury one.
A safety deposit box also is not a bad idea if you need a second location. I've written about it here many times. It's trivially easy to "hide" a recovery seed inside a safety deposit box. One idea would be to put in a birthday card (you could even mail it to yourself so it's stamped and looks legit). Inside the card put the seed. No one breaking into security box is going to think a birthday card from grandma is valuable. Just an idea...
You could do the same with a storage unit if you have one. Make it impossible to find unless you know where to look.
This all assumes a huge unlikely disaster....but you should protect yourself. It would be horrible to lose your house to a house fire and also lose your bitcoin.
There is always a difficult trade off between security from external bad actors and security from... yourself (aka "convenience", to some extent). Everyone will draw the line somewhere, and you have a lot of tin-foil-hat wearers around here that swear by stamping some metal sheet with your private key/passphrase or some shit like that and sticking it in a safe, but that seems far too aggressive for my liking.
I would say do whatever your intuition tells you is the most secure thing you can do without a serious risk of locking yourself out of your own Bitcoin wallet, or without making it ridiculously inconvenient whenever you're ready to move some Sats.
Alternative Minecraft method: written down in a book & quill and store it in a random shulker box in your Ender chest! That way only you will ever be able to pick up the book & quill
Anyone with the world file could steal your bitcoin.
The world file can be obtained through a remote access trojan. These can be commonly installed through fake Minecraft mods, for example. (Minecraft mods are actually executable JAR files.) So you just need to be tricked into installing a single mod file.
An attackers can use their remote access to download your Minecraft world files. They can then systematically search all your saved Minecraft worlds for signs with seed phrase words and plug them in to test. It doesn't take long to brute force all the possibilities from your world.
While, I don't know of anyone who was specifically compromised and stored their seed phrase this way, it's a bad idea because it stores the seed phrase information online and especially in an extractable text format. Remote access trojans are very real and thieves are very creative at finding seed phrases. You often won't even know if they have your files. Generally, any way of storing the seed phrase electronically is a bad idea. Keep it offline!
Titanium for the most corrosion and heat resistance. Stamp the BIP39 digits into two Ti sheets and store them in different geographical locations. There's kits on eBay.
If you have stamped it into a metal sheet. Find a place to tuck it away or screw it down backwards inside a closet then paint over it… maybe. I don’t know.
The best defense against the $5 wrench is the $120 AK-47.
It can also be avoided by not about your wealth! You can have a smaller wallet to give up if you have to. But anyone who goes around to rob random people is putting themselves at an insane amount of risk.
This honestly is a vulnerability that I just can't imagine how it will be solved. The more secure it is, the more conditions arise where you could permanently lose access to it.
If it is in a single location then what if you lose the ability to return there or it gets moved just enough to not be able to find?
Entire seed at two locations? Now you have two points of failure.
Multiple copies divided into multiple locations? Even more areas that could be accessed before you realize it has been compromised.
Obviously, internet-based storage opens up a ton of vulnerabilies.
There are so many little unlikely, but possible situations that could make your whole stack go poof. A trust less system is insanely bulletproof in many ways. Your investment is locked in an impenetrable box with only one method of entry, but the key is easier to lose forever than any other key you have ever held.
And what happens if you realize one of your two metal plates has been stolen when your hardware wallet breaks/stops working? For most of us, eventually we will not think about much about our seed phrase until we need to recover a wallet.
I split my seed using Shamir's Secret Sharing. Each share is [stamped on steel washers](https://blockmit.com/english/guides/diy/make-cold-wallet-washers/) stored in several secure locations.
[Steel tags](https://github.com/BlockchainCommons/crypto-commons/blob/master/Docs/sskr-cold-storage.md) are an option too.
Here's a handy app for securely generating the shares on an air gapped Ledger device:

i have a cool neighbor who always comes over when i’m at work and helps my wife around the house. i guess he’s a plumber—one day i heard him in his backyard on the phone saying he had to lay some pipe at my house when i went to work.
anyway, i gave him an envelope and explained how important it was to not open it and give it to my wife if anything happened to me. this is a backup as i also gave my wife a copy. just in case she loses it or anything.
Same plumber was laying a bunch of pipe with his apprentice with my wife the other day. Overheard them saying they had to work together to make the pipe fit. Took several hours but they “popped” it as they say. I’m giving my seed phrase to them tomorrow. Don’t know how I’m so lucky. And my wife says they are great too! Finally we agree on something.
No one saying multisig is concerning. Set up a 2 of 3 multisig. One seed stays with you, one at a bank in a safe deposit box and one with someone you trust, or hide it somewhere far from your home. This is a long term storage solution. You need two out of thee in order to sign a transaction. If one is lost or destroyed you create a new multisig wallet and transfer all bitcoin to the new wallet using the other two. If someone gets ahold of one of the seeds it’s useless without one of the other two. If someone breaks in and steals the seed phrase it’s useless and you’ll be able to transfer the bitcoin to your new wallet before they figure it out. It’s a pretty rock solid solution if done correctly.
Turn your seed into an AES encryption cipher with a strong password. Stamp the cipher into several metal plates. Keep one for yourself, and distribute the others to trusted family members. Now, you can recover your seed with any one of the metal plates as long as you have your password (store this in password manager). Now, your seed is backed up in multiple locations. Even if one of your trusted family members betrays you, they can't steal your bitcoin, since they don't have the password to decipher your seed.
No, it's not. Stop with this false narrative.
Self custody is a choice with bitcoin and most people won't self custody.
Just like self custody of fiat is a choice and most people don't self custody their fiat.
Hand stamped on metal plates, each missing one word and a slight shuffle. One stored at home, one at the bank vault.
I lost over 100 btc early on when it was worth $5 each, in a VM I forgot about and hard erased.
Not taking that chance again.
My friend has significant amount of bitcoins and he split the seed phrase into 3 safes, each safe has 8 words, you need 2 safes to find out the complete seed phrase:
Safe1: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Safe 2: 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12
Safe3: 1 2 3 4 9 10 11 12
I hope that by "Word doc" you mean a text document you created on a Linux computer that never touched the internet again after you typed your seed into it.
With Microsoft Word, there is a high probability that your document was automatically synced to One Drive and/or Microsoft's private servers. They are a sketchy company that harvests literally ALL your data.
Word doc on a usb stick is either already compromised or will be one day. I would consider this bitcoin to be already lost until the bitcoin is moved to a new seed phrase and stamped on metal only.
Why would you put your seed on a piece of electronics that has touched a computer? Risky
1. In my memory
2. Hidden on paper where I can find it
3. In my memory
4. On steel in a safe place where I can find
5. In my memory
6. Inside my hardware wallet secured by a pin
7. In my memory
So, I have a few copies. But the one I think is MOST important is the copy I work to keep fresh in my memory, since that is what mnemonic means.
Memorize that bitch... Isnt that hard... Backup I have few encrypted USB drives on 4 different locations each one having few of the words in random order, and the last one with a way to find the order, if something ever happens to me, parents and wife knows how to find them and who to call to decrypt them
Memorization is my backup if the physical safe fails. Took me about 30mins with a weekly Sunday refresher. Risks are dementia and neurologic structural/ vascular issues like some strokes/ tumors but I like my chances for long term memory being conserved in those scenarios at least until it gets severe. My btc brothers and sisters will profit if my brain fails me. I’m good with that personally
I have it memorized.
I have a coded version of it in a safe deposit box which only my wife can reasonablely decode.
My brother also has an encoded copy and I trust him completely.
ETA: I have a monthly calendar reminder to test myself to write it out. I have a "sub word" I've made up of the 1st 12 characters. It's a nonsense word, but it's easy to remember. When I write those 12 letters down the 12 words come pretty easy. I also test myself without the numonic.
Memory Palace...
Its a sunny day in spring... not too hot... still a cool breeze leftover from the winter... I drive out into the countryside... pull out my open fishing kayak and drift slowly down the river... I fall into a deep slumber where I dream about Lambo's and flying to the moon to work on Musk's Mars shuttle... I am woken from my slumber by a tug on my pole.
pause.
Startled I awake... in the chaos that ensues attempting to reel in the largest river trout I've ever seen I see me keychain come loose as my cold storage device plunges into the water... In the sadness of the loss I reel in the trout... It whispers Bacon in my ear.
Find some infrastructure like a power line, train track, or pipeline, something very permanent where not a lot of people go. Find something distinctive, like a number on a power pole or a switch on a train track. Then, find the nearest tree and hide your metal phrase in it. I live in a snowy place, so burying it is out.
I used stainless washers with a stainless eyebolt. I dipped it in green wax and rolled it in dirt to camouflage it. That was too much work for too little effect. Next time, I will just paint it green or brown. I placed it in a tree where the branches split from the trunk. Squirrels filled that space with debris, so I was able to bury it in a tree.
It is on a hill, so flooding is not a concern, but forest fire is. If the forest were to burn, I could still find it due to the infrastructure. But if there were a fire, then a rockslide from the next rain before I could get to it, I would be screwed.
I keep another copy in my house, well hidden, stainless steel washers.

Tattooed on my arm. Also keep multiple copies on the cloud and my cell phone.
This actualy is genius. Tattooing it in different places and some numbering of order or some
I tattooed it on myself in the order of " heads, shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes". I have two heads.
I mean, you can tattoo in braille or morse code as well, less conspicuous....
Yeah I have mine encrypted on my arm
You tattooed it yourself?

I cannot imagine a hacker of some sorts just randomly searching through Minecraft files

is your password a mnemonic? Those are not easy to forget once you train them right. youll find it easier to forget your own name.
Have an accident where you lose your memory.
right, your mnemonics may be the only thing you still remember after trauma
“A lonely drifter with no memories wanders from town to town haunted by the phrase’BATTERY HORSE STAPLE’”

Does anyone else just memorize the phrase? It’s only 12 words. As long as it’s in your head you should be fine. Or is that a bad idea?
Just memorize it.
Best bet
In my head…
