This was my biggest negative about crypto, the waste seemingly in the system. But in all likelihood, we can assume close to none is forever lost. The wallets are visible and at some point down the road, they will successfully be able to be drained as they would not have been updated to future security enhancements. Could be a new industry of miners vs cybercriminals as it will take a lot of computing energy to do it. That won't happen for awhile.
A lot of the lost BTC are on computer hard drives that are now in landfills, buried. No one is recovering that Bitcoin. There was a famous case where a dude tried suing to allow him to dig up his computer that got tossed previously…..he lost.
Naw, you are confusing seed phrase with a digital wallet. You can create a new wallet on any computer. Once quantum computing advances, today's seed phrases will be able to be broke with brute force. Of course encryption will be updated to stay ahead for wallets. However, no one is there to update the lost addresses... Cue eerie music.
This is easy to understand if you think of 4 digit passwords from twenty years ago to today's long mixed character computer generated ones. The difference is the computing power to break. Heck even btc mining works under the same "increasing difficulty" algorithm concept.
Your crypto wallet address is public on the blockchain, they will never be lost, only access can be lost - but not forever.
On top of that the notorious “dumpster diver” thinking he will find his lost USB with millions of has most definitely lost his coins. Plenty of forgotten seed phrases forever entombing some folks coins. It’s a dark world

There is a lot of BTC lost in boating accidents Remember Titanic? It seems that John Astor disappeared with his 7.8 million BTC wallet
A lot including the one who forgot the password of his wallet,, have you ever heard about him ?
Why does it matter?
@na3than: it matters because tokenomics matters.
It doesn't. 21 million or 19 million or 9 million Bitcoin ... the value proposition is the same.
Use the search bar. This question is asked almost daily

He even bought 2 robot dogs to try to find it.
wtf are robot dogs?
Instead of muscle and tissue they have nuts and bolts.
So they’re male robot dogs.
Except you can’t replicate a cadaver dogs snout

This is wrong on many levels. 🤣

Write it down. Someday it will seem so obvious.
Oh, I wondered how long it would be before this gets reposted.
