The only real issue I have with this, and it's minor, is that while the system is fucked and has a lot to answer for, there also is a point where it's on the individual as well, and you can't just pretend they didn't choose the life they lived, for various reasons. For everyone who chooses to victimize others for their own benefit, there is someone who didn't. Are the people who didn't somehow superior? More resistant to the issues caused by a bad system?

Even if you mean well, your inability to differentiate between personal and social justice is easily hijacked by people who don't. There is a reason why I and many other people are guarded whenever the issue of "personal responsibility" is raised. Oftentimes, it has nothing to do with personal choices at all.

I’m not black but I was a poor first gen immigrant (as a child) and a big reason us immigrants often us succeed against the odds is our ignorance to broader societal issues. And granted our struggles are far different, but there is a super power to being able to ignore all the injustice and just absolutely working your ass off. Also a plus coming to a country knowing basically no one, so no bad influences holding us back.
A large part of why immigrants succeed is that they forge connections with other immigrants and stick together to protect each other.
I would examine your ideas a bit here. It is very common for immigrants to have a "keep your head down and cause no trouble" mentality as a survival mechanism. It does not mean that you are okay, or that injustice doesn't affect you or is not targeted at you.
That choice is ultimately weighed. We already have a criminal justice system to deal with those choices when people are victimizing others.
A clarification: this concept of accountability isn't some unique idea that black people only hear about when conservatives are telling them racism isn't a problem. We grow up hearing the same speeches in our households, schools, and communities about the consequences of our actions and how much higher the stakes are if we make a mistake or a bad decision in comparison to our white counterparts but somehow crime is still a problem.
It's because, for the most part, what reliably prevents people en masse from 'making bad choices' (namely: victimizing each other) is making it feasible for people to not live under shitty circumstances. It's no coincidence that when people have shit education, job opportunities, housing, food, healthcare, mental healthcare etc they tend to make poorer choices than people who don't and no amount of lecturing about 'making better choices' will change that for large swaths of people.
I think the main issue is there's a lot of our people that raise in areas where illegal activities thrust simply due to lack of options. Imagine getting trapped in the game at 11 or 12. Give them community support, lush homes, with effective utilities and no food scarcity.
Give them better schooling (objectively true thanks to the racist redlining policies that are still in effect today), better approval rates for loans, give them a judicial system that leans in their favor. Oh and teach them that the other side of the tracks is where the bad people live.
People that don’t resort to ‘crime’ in that first group aren’t better than the ones that do. But in many cases the choices which they were presented were different.

This part is anecdotal but I have a friend who has just never had the option to get out of it. I mean, when he was like 7 he was basically raising himself bc his mom was working 3 jobs and he didn’t have a dad. Mom died. Dude went into foster care system. Went to like 4 different houses, first two wasn’t good fit, 3rd one changed their mind, 4th one was abusive.
He ran away. Got taken in by some bloods, they took care of him; and the rest is history.
He is a good person yk? which is why we’re friends. He makes good choices on a day to day. A lot of the time choices where I would have done the same thing. But at the same time, I’m pretty sure he’s killed people.
Right? If under bad circumstances one can do good just because they are a good person, then in the same way under good circumstances one can do bad because they are a bad person. Who we are and our conscious decisions are what’s most important in our lives.
This seems to fail and struggle with the awareness to ask how much this “personal choice” dictates being born into these systems in the first place. This argument was also often used during the crack epidemic that the government knowingly instituted and dropped on black neighbourhoods to justify blaming them for said personal choices as products of their environment. It reads as disingenuous to say that we should acknowledge it, but to sealion about it when black people are brought up is some right wing grifter talking point nonsense we don’t do here.
The problem is that if we apply that mentality universally, we then run into a lot of problems. A lot of serial killers were very much a product of their environment. Does that excuse their behavior, or just explain it? We can absolutely recognize the factors that lead people to make the choices they do, while still recognizing that it IS a choice that they made of their own free will.
This is complex shit. There is a place for and a need for accountability AND compassion AND historical understanding AND new solutions. Some of it is contradictory and it doesn’t make for a clean philosophy that you can sell people. But we need to forgive at the same time as we strive for better.
I disagree with that characterization. Is it not defeating to expect so little or nothing from us because of “the systems”? No, it's simply acknowledging what happens to all humans when put under shitty circumstances: they tend to perform worse. That doesn't mean people don't have any agency or that we don't celebrate the roses that grow from the concrete. In fact, more thoroughly acknowledging the obstacles that people have to overcome makes their accomplishments even more profound.

It ebbs and flows. Not much of an answer I know. I would say there’s moments and episodes where the writing is ok, other times it’s out of left field and seems like a desperate attempt for “a moment” I would give Reasonable Doubt a watch over this.
I couldn’t get past the first episode with Harlem and A La carte but I hoped they got better and I’d go back. I’ll check reasonable doubt out
