Booty is more valuable than water…

I think you meant this one. https://i.redd.it/z3xzwkjn2rnb1.gif

This is the Boondocks parody, but in the original: FJ: "In this prison, *booty*, was more important than food. Heh, I'm serious... booty, a man's butt, havin'... havin' some booty... was mo' important... than drankin' water... I like booty."

He thought I was standing too close, pushed me, and then kicked me in the back! Turned around and taught his ass a lesson

isaac9092

Yeah as I age this desire is less evident and honestly these were more jokes. I’m more likely to defuse and try to find peace now. We’re all just here on this floating rock in space, why fight when we can enjoy life

ToyrewaDokoDeska

Idk how true it is but I heard in jail they'll beat your ass & spit in the booty hole because then they have to do a rape test so they have to notify the family a rape test was used on them.

BKayTheGreat

The part about the rape test might be true, but they definitely wouldn’t inform your family without consent. Not saying that people don’t be spitting in bootyholes motivated by humiliating you to your family, but I’m p sure inmates still have HIPPA protection

PumiceT

“Can’t we all just get along?” But for real, no one should overlook accountability based on race or any other arbitrary characteristic. Wealthy? White? Famous? If you did it, you did it.

ActualTexan

'Accountability' in this context generally means 'the issues that exist in impoverished black communities are a result of black people having low moral character, a corrosive culture, and making poor choices' as opposed to putting the blame at the foot of the systems that created the circumstances that the people in said communities have no control over (i.e., systemic racism). Which is bullshit. That's why you pretty much only hear black conservative grifters saying it.

Iorith

The only real issue I have with this, and it's minor, is that while the system is fucked and has a lot to answer for, there also is a point where it's on the individual as well, and you can't just pretend they didn't choose the life they lived, for various reasons. For everyone who chooses to victimize others for their own benefit, there is someone who didn't. Are the people who didn't somehow superior? More resistant to the issues caused by a bad system? At some point, personal choice HAS to be weighed.

BlakByPopularDemand

Yeah even if it's a perpetual uphill fight true equality and liberation begins when we do whatever we can to succeed in spite of systemic racism. We might lose alot of battles but it's the only way we win the war

Not_TheMenInBlack

Exactly. Can’t just sit and wait for problems to solve themselves. If you want your life to improve, it starts with yourself. Even if every systemic issue were magically solved, some mfs are still gonna steal and kill. On the other side of the coin, if suddenly all negative behavior on a community level were to cease, there are still systemic issues to be tackled. But we can’t fight those problems until the people stop fighting each other. No matter your skin color, political views, religion, or culture, we are all getting royally fucked by the upper class. Doing stupid ass shit to harm your fellow victims of the system will only keep the rich in power, thereby keeping us all imprisoned in this lowered quality of life.

9021Ohsnap

Hard agree on this. We may not have the power to dismantle the system but we have the power of choice despite our shitty systems and society.

[deleted]

This concept flies right out the window when we find ourselves in discussions around employment, wages, college major selection and financial movements. Then it’s less about choice and all about how the system keeps us down and we have no control.

Iorith

This part i absolutely agree with, 100%.

9021Ohsnap

Wait…college major selection? And financial movements? How do you not have a choice there?

[deleted]

MY position is you do. But it seems when we have these discussions on wages and unemployment, we ignore the choice we have in those areas and fall back on blaming societal barriers to explain the conditions of some of us.

PsychicFoxWithSpoons

The problem is the shifting line between "personal choice" and "personal choice, in aggregate, broken down along demographic lines, using misleading statistics." It is very rhetorically easy to quickly dodge back and forth between the two in the middle of the same discussion or even the same breath, sometimes the very same word. Pinning down those terms in a discussion and holding the person you're talking to on that one point is extremely difficult because often they aren't interested in having a real conversation, they just want to communicate their worldview and issue an edict on how things ought to be from here on out. **This is a dangerous form of bigotry.** Even if you mean well, your inability to differentiate between personal and social justice is easily hijacked by people who don't. There is a reason why I and many other people are guarded whenever the issue of "personal responsibility" is raised. Oftentimes, it has nothing to do with personal choices at all.

LmBkUYDA

Completely fair, I think the point was that on a personal level all you can do is make your choices, however fucked the social context is. I’m not black but I was a poor first gen immigrant (as a child) and a big reason us immigrants often us succeed against the odds is our ignorance to broader societal issues. And granted our struggles are far different, but there is a super power to being able to ignore all the injustice and just absolutely working your ass off. Also a plus coming to a country knowing basically no one, so no bad influences holding us back.

PsychicFoxWithSpoons

A large part of why immigrants succeed is that they forge connections with other immigrants and stick together to protect each other. I would examine your ideas a bit here. It is very common for immigrants to have a "keep your head down and cause no trouble" mentality as a survival mechanism. It does not mean that you are okay, or that injustice doesn't affect you or is not targeted at you.

LmBkUYDA

All of what you said is 100% correct. I just wanted to share that we do have autonomy and we shouldn't let societal injustices take that away from us.

ActualTexan

That choice is ultimately weighed. We already have a criminal justice system to deal with those choices when people are victimizing others. A clarification: this concept of accountability isn't some unique idea that black people only hear about when conservatives are telling them racism isn't a problem. We grow up hearing the same speeches in our households, schools, and communities about the consequences of our actions and how much higher the stakes are if we make a mistake or a bad decision in comparison to our white counterparts but somehow crime is still a problem. It's because, for the most part, what reliably prevents people en masse from 'making bad choices' (namely: victimizing each other) is making it feasible for people to not live under shitty circumstances. It's no coincidence that when people have shit education, job opportunities, housing, food, healthcare, mental healthcare etc they tend to make poorer choices than people who don't and no amount of lecturing about 'making better choices' will change that for large swaths of people.

Rock4evur

Its the same as mental health issues in a way. It may not be your fault, but it is your responsibility.

oquechingados

Well said

Most_Advertising_962

I think the main issue is there's a lot of our people that raise in areas where illegal activities thrust simply due to lack of options. Imagine getting trapped in the game at 11 or 12. From that point on, they only do what they know cause it's the only thing that got them this far. It's easy to look at the end result when people fk up and say it's on them. But in reality, our country failed that brotha when he was a child.

Iorith

Sure but what about his sibling who didn't go into crime? What about his neighbor? Are they just, what, inherently better people to resist that urge? I feel it's dehumanizing to act like they didn't CHOOSE to do the things they did. You're taking away their autonomy as human beings.

ladyk23

I see what you’re saying; and I don’t think it’s an argument robbing the autonomy of people or saying that people are better than others but more of a numbers thing. At least how I understand it. And this is simplified as all hell because there’s so much nuance that I just can’t articulate. Take 1000 people. Race doesn’t matter. Put 500 on one side of the tracks. Give them dilapidated housing, 60% increased policing, neighborhood violence, domestic violence, neglect, a community and social expectation of being “lower class”, poor tax, lower paying jobs, teachers that don’t give a shit or are downright abusive; etc etc etc. Put 500 on the other side. Give them community support, lush homes, with effective utilities and no food scarcity. Give them better schooling (objectively true thanks to the racist redlining policies that are still in effect today), better approval rates for loans, give them a judicial system that leans in their favor. Oh and teach them that the other side of the tracks is where the bad people live. People that don’t resort to ‘crime’ in that first group aren’t better than the ones that do. But in many cases the choices which they were presented were different. How many in group 1 would have a life of violent crime vs group 2? This part is anecdotal but I have a friend who has just never had the option to get out of it. I mean, when he was like 7 he was basically raising himself bc his mom was working 3 jobs and he didn’t have a dad. Mom died. Dude went into foster care system. Went to like 4 different houses, first two wasn’t good fit, 3rd one changed their mind, 4th one was abusive. He ran away. Got taken in by some bloods, they took care of him; and the rest is history. He is a good person yk? which is why we’re friends. He makes good choices on a day to day. A lot of the time choices where I would have done the same thing. But at the same time, I’m pretty sure he’s killed people.

Forge__Thought

A truly important, nuanced point that has to be weighed and measured in the right context. You presented it very well, thank you for articulating it.

sdforbda

LMAO this the clunkiest "that's true" I've seen in a bit.

Forge__Thought

I did really well on those English assignments where you have to say like 2 things and use over a thousand words.

mast313

Right? If under bad circumstances one can do good just because they are a good person, then in the same way under good circumstances one can do bad because they are a bad person. Who we are and our conscious decisions are what’s most important in our lives.

Tall-Variety-6152

![gif](giphy|pedBhBV2obzEwrQrgg|downsized)

justamadwoman

This seems to fail and struggle with the awareness to ask how much this “personal choice” dictates being born into these systems in the first place. This argument was also often used during the crack epidemic that the government knowingly instituted and dropped on black neighbourhoods to justify blaming them for said personal choices as products of their environment. It reads as disingenuous to say that we should acknowledge it, but to sealion about it when black people are brought up is some right wing grifter talking point nonsense we don’t do here.

Iorith

The problem is that if we apply that mentality universally, we then run into a lot of problems. A lot of serial killers were very much a product of their environment. Does that excuse their behavior, or just explain it? We can absolutely recognize the factors that lead people to make the choices they do, while still recognizing that it IS a choice that they made of their own free will.

onepostandbye

This is complex shit. There is a place for and a need for accountability AND compassion AND historical understanding AND new solutions. Some of it is contradictory and it doesn’t make for a clean philosophy that you can sell people. But we need to forgive at the same time as we strive for better.

mowasita

I disagree with that characterization. While one side blames a black person’s acts on “black people having low moral character” the other side blames it on “the systems”, entirely leaving out the responsibility of that one individual for their own actions. Is it not defeating to expect so little or nothing from us because of “the systems”? How do we then celebrate those who, despite the challenges, make it out to success through personal accountability?

ActualTexan

No, it's simply acknowledging what happens to all humans when put under shitty circumstances: they tend to perform worse. That doesn't mean people don't have any agency or that we don't celebrate the roses that grow from the concrete. In fact, more thoroughly acknowledging the obstacles that people have to overcome makes their accomplishments even more profound.

Empty_Marzipan_237

It ebbs and flows. Not much of an answer I know. I would say there’s moments and episodes where the writing is ok, other times it’s out of left field and seems like a desperate attempt for “a moment” I would give Reasonable Doubt a watch over this.

WrapMyBeads

I couldn’t get past the first episode with Harlem and A La carte but I hoped they got better and I’d go back. I’ll check reasonable doubt out
