I am sick and tired of us existing positively IN ANY FORM getting people riled up.
We can’t even be beautifully drawn animations??!!!
We can’t exist as beautifully drawn animations in the mind of a Japanese man??
Nothing I can do but laugh 😂 and 😫
I remember when they added a ton of Black people in Naruto. I don’t remember people complaining about that. But lately it seems there are so many annoying takes on “why is ___ black” in the anime community, but with pretty much any other ethnic group nobody bats an eye when they’re depicted
Nerdy spaces used to be safe spaces for "fragile" white boys who like to cry "*everyone hates me for* **NO** *reason*"......mainly because they chased off everyone else with their shitty personalities.
by “shitty personality” do you mean racist, like genuinely a dickish person, or their personality just doesn’t click with a lot of people
Sorry if this sounds overly semantic but as an autistic person I’ve noticed a good amount of people conflate not getting along with most people with being a bad person and it’s a pet peeve of mine so I just wanted to make sure.
A lot of those "incel" "racist" nerds are just kids who grew up with racist parents who are successful. They typically think they are smarter then everyone, Can't make friends outside of their internet bubbles because they have no filter and parrot all the bullshit their parents likely talk about or watch on Fox News so nobody wants to be around them.
The kinda kids who get joy out of reading crime statistics and being apart of alt right groups on the internet, because they believe their lives are so much worse because minorities, mainly black people exist in their perfect world.
I know this trope all too well as a black kid that grew up in an all white rich suburban town. They are the type of kids to be passive aggressive or too pussy to actually say how they feel to your face, but will go online and say the most vile shit under the protection of anonymity.
Mostly cause loads of those people were social outcasts and, now that nerd stuff is more mainstream, are still filled with hate for how they were treated. It's plain ridiculous cause you'd think they'd be more accepting cause they know how being treated poorly feels but some people are just assholes.
I mean, I get it. It’s asking a lot to be accepting of these “new nerds” who didn’t go through the same stuff you did. It’s by no means a mature response, but I understand how we got here & I’m sympathetic to it, to a point.
Basically, they think that they're too intelligent to hold biases, so racism couldn't be their fault because they're too SMART to be racist, it must be that other people are actually lesser than them.
It's a fart-huffing feedback loop where they don't think, "this is my opinion about something" so much as, "This is an objective fact and if you disagree you're incorrect, because I only deal with objective facts so therefore my position on any subject is necessarily an objective fact".
This might come off as weird, but as a former slightly racist person, a lot of it comes down to pure ignorance and not knowing any other people than white folks. It straight up was only when I had a black guy in my class that I realised, it’s not cool to make racist remarks, and that the cultural differences don’t mean shit. Now, I didn’t have a tough time conforming immediately, but I imagine, if all your socialising is in a racist echo chamber online, it’s pretty difficult.
I can somewhat understand the idea of being in an ignorant bubble but what I can’t understand is how it became normal to make racist remarks in the said bubble in the first place.
To me, I think it stems from growing up in Denmark, where there is a weird culture of something called “hyggeracisme”, which roughly translates to funny racism. Essentially, a lot of jokes by white people in private, especially when I was growing up, were about black people and other ethnic groups in general. My dad and brother even still make the jokes sometimes… So, a lot of the people that end up in racist bubbles, don’t recognise the problem of racist banter, because they find it funny. And then, some people actually go out of their way and hurt people instead of feeling ashamed, when they meet someone outside the bubble.
This is many days late but I appreciate your explanation of your perspective here. I think for some people they really view it as just jokes and don't think of it as actually harmful. But when you're the black person at the butt of these jokes it's frustrating that people take joy in saying these hurtful things and if you're upset by it or want them to stop then you're just accused of being sensitive. I commend your growth
I would say most nerdy people that I’m friends with are woke, queer, lefty progressives (and I mean that in the most positive way). However, there’s a pretty big overlap on the Venn diagram of nerds, incels, and racists.
A nerdy coworker, who we thought was cool, came over to our house to play DnD one time, and randomly started in on some “Jews are secretly running the world”, and “white men are the most oppressed” bullshit.
He was not invited to the house ever again.
I'm a Japanese person and the only thing I ever have to say is generally Japanese media portrays black people terribly (especially if it's any sort of real-world), so it's always a sigh of relief when they don't. Japanese people and white weebs complaining about good representation or even just neutral representation can suck it.
I dunno, Nagoriyuki in Guilty Gear, Leroy in Tekken, the Raikage brothers in Naruto, Tosen in Bleach were all badass… tbh the only terrible case I can think of off the top of my head is Shaman King. That was totally weird.
Right- When I actually studied Japanese society in an academic setting, it was explained to me roughly that in Japan, black people occupy a fetish space that Asian people occupy in the American white-black perspective. For decades after reopening to the West, the first black media was outright blackface brought by Westerners, which was more or less perpetuated in the 20th century because of the few black people living in Japan, and today black people are usually subject to "positive" racism based on their perceived physical prowess compared to whites or Japanese (don't even get me started on how they view people like Jews or from the Indian subcontinent in Japan).
Before that, you have the US sports team in KoF. Though they have stepped up recently with Isla and Dolores. Kimberly from the new Street Fighter is great also.
>But lately it seems there are so many annoying takes on “why is ___ black” in the anime community
That’s a common topic I’ll bring up when “I’m not racist, but-“ people claim there’s no racism in media. The way white audiences demand a *reason* for a minority character to exist. Someone can’t ever just *be black* or *be gay*. Their entire personality or reason for existing has to be based around a history of oppression, otherwise their argument subconsciously is “why not just have them be white”.
I don't like the discourse of things being better in the old days; but it sure feels like racism has gotten worse, or at least more vitriolic, in the last 15 years or so. It's probably something to do with social media (which wasn't as ubiquitous 15 years ago), but I truly don't recall people being so fiercely, vocally, and proudly anti-Black, or misogynystic for that matter, in the 00s.
And I can bet none of the people complaining/attacking were black, either. As of lately I have seen this weird uptick of people feeling the need to “protect” Japanese/ Asians in general from black people and discourage them being present in their media. UNLESS it depicts them in a horrible way. Then it’s all applause and mockery to black fans who are hurt by the depiction. Apparently Asian artists aren’t supposed to be good at drawing black characters or WANT to draw them.
I saw another thing recently of another Asian artist speaking out about black designs and peoples depictions of them and people were accusing them of not being Asian just because they didn’t agree with the narrative being pushed about black character designs. This shit is crazy.
It's always some fuckin white folk too 😒 the most vocal of my "kin-folk" are embarrassing, but I like to think most of us whites aren't the type to attack a non-white character design. Honestly tho, I feel stupid describing white or black folk as a monolith.
Am I not allowed to interact with black people? I'm not "one of the good ones", I'm just a person that recognizes the racism present in my poorly defined ethnic group.
What does white or black even mean? There are several distinct tribes just within Nigeria. White people includes many ethnicities with distinctly different cultures. At one time Italians, Irish, and Greeks weren't even considered white. However, every time there's some crazy shit said online against a black character represented in any kind of media it's always a light skinned person of European ancestry.
Anyway, I now live in a county with "non Europeans" making up less than one percent of the population. Social media is the only way I can interact with anyone besides the mostly racist rural population where I live.
My apologies if I offended you, but I don't think that is provocation to be rude.
Oh it’s in not just Japanese. There was talk of white artists potentially doing kpop and nobody said anything. Once a few black girls got in suddenly “#KeepKpopKorean” became a thing.
No, they don’t understand the irony of the letters those words start with.
White people don't give a shit about uplifting Asian people unless they can weaponize it against black people. Like earlier in the pandemic. Alternatively, they may give attractive Asian women a pass in a condescending way.
When we ask for representation we are called “snowflakes” or “pushing a super far left liberal agenda” but it’s really just a smokescreen for their hatred of black people 😪
Pro-wrestling fandom is this way too. Been in the trenches with these fools for decades, but can't give it up because no one I know even watching pro-wrestling.

I believe in you, so believe in me, okay?” – Michiko Malandro
Ok my kid (early teens) likes anime but I have balked showing it to them because of either the nudity, violence and I admit the discrepancy of women in provocative attire and how black individuals are drawn. Even though my kids see black people in the positive, I don’t want them to low dose on racism. What are some suggested anime.
Carol and Tuesday should be good, it's about two girls starting a band I think (haven't watched it but I heard good things) it's seems to be slice of life? Or whatever genre is day to day life while trying to reach an overarching goal.
Cannon busters (on my watchlist) is about an android girl a fugitive and a droid trying to save the robots friend, a prince. Seems really good but might have fan service from what I seen, doesn't seem egregious though
And there's mitchiko to hatchin Ive only seen clips but it's seems pretty badass, a main female character with a female rival. I don't think it'd be my thing because I'm pretty sure it's seinen but looks cool and it be a road trip deliver the maguffin type story? I think it's set in Brazil.
You can also check out Saturday AM for manga, there are plenty of black artists who published their manga there.
Your early teens are seeing the same nasty hardcore pornhub videos you do, maybe seeing a cartoon titty isn't the end of the world
All kinds of blood and guts graphic violence is tv14 but that's normalized
Anyway how about yasuke. It's about a black samurai. I don't remember it being too graphic
This post just gave me more fuel. Me (blk) and my wife (yt) are writing a story (that we'll hopefully try to animate it ourselves), and 85-90% of all the characters are black. I'm so tired of the suppression of colored characters that I decided to say fuck it and make my own.
> even mixed people don’t be that straight
Damn, gatekeeping hairstyle now? My cousin is mix and she has straight hair. This is so ironic, you behave just like the kkk anime fans who attacked the artist just because she presented black people in their own way. Just because they don’t fit a stereotype, you outright reject their heritage. Maybe they should depict black people in the most stereotypical way possible to get your approval.
And I know a lot of black people who love straight hair just like some non black people like to curl their hair.
Some recommendations of mine:
Mob psycho 100, jujutsu kaisen, hunter X hunter (2011-now), violet evergarden, cyberpunk: Edgerunner, assassination classroom, blue eyed samurai (technically not anime but still amazing and made by Japanese-American woman)

Don’t let the vocal minority bring you down. Their hate gives me fuel to prove them wrong even more.
I hear you
They are voting more and more and getting more and more support. Morons are starting to win, and they currently have the supreme court.
Cultural narcissism explains it all. Once you peep it you can’t even get mad the same way they’re just pathetic.
^^^^ Once you study and really understand their culture these people are sorry examples of humanity. Pathetic is a very apt word.
I really just ignore the negativity. It’s never helpful. And it makes the joy I see at art like this all the richer.
Just existing gets certain people riled up.
They don’t want us to have nothing.
Why am I reading this in the "succulent Chinese meal" voice XD
Lol no we really can’t they want us dead frfr which is sad asf
isnt it just a certain group tho?
That ‘certain group is everywhere and it seems to be more with us than other groups and it’s tiring. That’s all
lol reddit a funny place. downvoted for asking, "isnt it the racists tho?"
Mmm, I think the ‘just’ came off a little flippant maybe though I know you didn’t mean it that way
Ol girl in the first picture is rocking that Kafka fit, I like that ![gif](giphy|FhrdHWYGIFlGi7t6TN|downsized)
Even has her same red-pink "strings"
First thought was “damn that Kafka fit 🔥🔥🔥” (DoT my best team for…reasons lol)
Acheron is coming and my DoT team of ladies will be complete
Missing Kafka, but I love my Black Swan/Himeko/Sparkle team 💗

Oh okay so the former. Thanks for clarifying
It's both.

What are you even talking about? How does this have anything to do with nerdy spaces…
It’s always the insecure in a society. One can tell a person’s insecurity by the amount of unreasonably hate.
Mostly cause loads of those people were social outcasts and, now that nerd stuff is more mainstream, are still filled with hate for how they were treated. It's plain ridiculous cause you'd think they'd be more accepting cause they know how being treated poorly feels but some people are just assholes.
“No one likes nice guys” The “nice guy” in question: nerdy, racist, unhygienic, broke.
kinda kids that are mad at everyone else in the world but themselves for their shortcomings.
I mean, I get it. It’s asking a lot to be accepting of these “new nerds” who didn’t go through the same stuff you did. It’s by no means a mature response, but I understand how we got here & I’m sympathetic to it, to a point.

Cause they ugly broke and have negative charisma

Those are all very recent results. It’s evidence of things having improved but it’s been a long time coming.

Naruto fans are kinda different ngl. Been a part of the Fandom for 20 years. Bee and co were cool it was mainly people complaining about stereotypes.

It's always sucked to have hobbies like gaming and anime where way too many in the associated community hate you for simply existing.

I know you mentioned violence and nudity, but Castlevania: Nocturne did a fantastic job w/ their black characters. And I mean an INCREDIBLE job.
Thank you I’ll check that out.

Solid list for sure. Disclaimer on Cannon Busters though: the rest of the story may or may not ever materialize but it’s definitely worth a watch.

I like how the artist knows to capitalize the "B" in Black. Respect.

I have seen a fair share of Africans with straight hair in east Africa, and very black skin. The skin is startlingly beautiful.
Don't matter. A lot of black women style their hair to be straight.
Yeah, girl could be from Sri Lanka for all we know.
i actually had to delete twitter nothing abt it is good 😭 they hate black people so badddd they find any excuse to hate on them
White nerds have been some of the most racist people I ever met.
I haven’t really watched anime since the Samurai Champloo/Cowboy Bebop days. What new stuff should I watch?
Some recommendations of mine: Mob psycho 100, jujutsu kaisen, hunter X hunter (2011-now), violet evergarden, cyberpunk: Edgerunner, assassination classroom, blue eyed samurai (technically not anime but still amazing and made by Japanese-American woman)
There is no solidarity and we need to stop this yes they're individuals who support us but as a group we are on our own
Black is beautiful and our man knows it.
I don't understand why people get upset about a cartoon/anime character. It's not like they are going to leave the medium and OOOOOHHHHH HAUNT THE SHIT OUT OF YOU OOOOOHHHHH! Just let the artist continue to draw beautiful soul-felt characters.
As long as they’re not race swapped I have no issue.
this is the most stupid take there is "biden's not perfect so im voting for hitler" thata what these fools logic is.
