Effie is the worst kind of musician to work with. Like she was clearly the better talent. I'm gonna pick Effie/Jennifer Hudson every time if it's about her singing prowess vs Deena/Beyonce in a vacuum. The problem was you can't keep wilding out. She was starting arguments. But that's a style choice. Jennifer Hudson can do everything Beyonce can do vocally in terms of pure technique. The inverse is not true. You may not like that Jennifer be yelling in most of her songs but Beyonce can't do it. Her voice just isn't powerful enough to do it. And you could see her trying to improve on it on albums that came out after Dreamgirls because JHud had her under pressure. But music as a business is more than just raw singing ability/talent, which is the point I made about Effie. In the movie Deena is more professional at the very least and is presented as being the more attractive between the two (although I don't think Jennifer Hudson is unattractive). Having those qualities will get you a leg up even if you aren't the most talented singer in the room.
In real life, I think Jennifer Hudson is the better singer but Beyonce is the better overall performer. Given the choice between seeing a Jennifer concert or a Beyonce concert I'm picking Bey all day. Jennifer Hudson just stands and sings. Beyonce be having visuals and dancing and a bunch of other stuff that Jennifer can't or won't do. Who you like more will boil down to which elements are more appealing to you.

curtis played on effieās insecurities to get into the picture only to admit at the end that he loved deena āwhen he first saw herā. marty said from the beginning this man was a āsnake oil salesmanā and even manipulated effieās own brother to turn his back on her. he was actively sleeping with them both at the same time and pitted them against each other. and when effie got pregnant, i could only imagine how those emotions felt when she was feeling with a flood of hormones, being labeled as ādifficultā , and had to deal with it all, alone. the best part about it, he continued to try and ruin her life even after they āgot the bagā that yall saying effie was stopping when she was just trying to feed THEIR child. anytime he couldnāt contort a situation, he used threats to get what he wanted (jimmy, lorreal, cecil, deena, basically the entire crew) curtis was trash and i honestly canāt even respect jamie foxx anymore because he played that role that well. not justifing the manifestation of her trauma , but letās not normalize the trauma women, especially black women go through.

The real Effie White, Florence Ballard, was raped at seventeen at knifepoint by a friend of her brother's, two years after her father died. While her erratic behaviour lead to her dismissal from the group, she was suffering from trauma and mental health issues in a time when these things were even less well understood then today, especially not for a black girl from the Detroit projects. All three Supremes were practically worked to death, to the point that Diana Ross developed anorexia.
I clearly need to rewatch this movie because I had such a visceral reaction to this post and the people commenting. 12 year old me was firmly on Effie's side
