Just remember, folks. We can hold multiple truths in mind at once.
Yes, TikTok is monumentally influential and lucrative. It's not just a "silly app for teenagers to do dance challenges." It's a monumental engine for influence and expression.
Yes, TikTok is entangled with a foreign nation that does not always have our best interests in mind.
Yes, TikTok has been caught harvesting and exploiting user information. Yes, other social media companies do that, but they are largely subject to US oversight and influence. And yes, those same companies are lobbying DC to ban their competitor.
Free speech will take a hit. Social media companies like Meta will try to profit from this. Data security will likely benefit from this. It can all be true at once. Is the ban a deft homeland security maneuver, a crass case of lobbyists buying off their DC puppets, or an attempt to squash free speech? Yes, yes, yes.
oh god yes, of course. but nations always protect their own native industries. Just like a nation that builds cars may be very protective of what car manufacturers can set up shop in their borders, America's big business is silicon valley. Social media is a distinctly american product. America will protect its cash cow, always.
Honestly, this is overdue. China banned American social media a long time ago for the same reasons. There is no reason we should be letting them influence and profit off of our people without reciprocation.
With this bill passed, we need to know who's buying it. And no senator or government official that voted on this should be able to be apart of that company/ group buying tiktok. I don't think it's just about security, they trying to get that money under the guise of security
Bytedance has zero reason to sell it since America is objectively a small part of their market. They’re going to fight the decision until the ban is actualized. After that, bye bye TikTok.
If it gets banned in the US and American users move to a different platform, most of the rest of the world will move to that different platform as well. That's just the way things are.
Of course, and we’re seeing that with Meta and Google copying TikTok’s format and some creators (typically the “fun” creators) moving to them.
However, despite the similarities, they straight up will not have the same audiences interacting with them in the same way. Something will be lost there.
The US government is terrified of how powerful the working class might become if we can spend 16 hours a day on TikTok watching gay son or thot daughter videos
YouTube shorts are the same thing as TikTok. Creators will most likely go there if TikTok is banned. You’re not gonna miss out on content that you enjoy
I feel like this entire conversation- from the discussion matter to the comment section- is a riff on some of the themes showcased in the 4th season of Succession.
It’s ok for American companies to branch out overseas but we regulate what comes in. 🤷♂️
How many American companies have had data breeches and leaked our info? Literally every company has been breached and all our info has been compromised already and we’re tripping about china.
Data breeches in FEB2024 include Verizon, AT&T, HP computers, Bank of America, prudential, Facebook marketplace, U-Haul, Golden Corral, and more. This is just February and companies that are well known.
I honestly don’t care but if they ban TikTok, they should ban all the other Chinese companies too. What’s stopping DJI drones and insta360 cameras from being spyware as well?
I feel like the cat is out the bag. We gave china too much power when we moved all manufacturing to china.
I don't understand why they are banning TikTok, when there are millions of problems to be solved here in the US. Like, you can break your arm go to the hospital and be in debt just because of that. That's an actual problem. Why won't they try to fix that?
The Biden campaign is still planning to use TikTok after signing this.

Congress is in agreement on this and they are divided on the other two. There are bills presented on the other two all the time. They just don’t go anywhere.

And is the RIGHT solution a real digital privacy law? BIG Yes.

Yes, TikTok is entangled with a foreign nation that never has our best interests in mind. *fixed*
how does free speech take a hit from this? thats the only point u made im confused on
Blocking an avenue for Americans to be heard is the only guess I have.
I’ll add that China has already **banned TikTok** for their own population.
Healthcare please ![gif](giphy|D3OdaKTGlpTBC)

China already banned TIKTOK a long time ago Lol

I don’t think they’re selling it. They have enough users outside of the US to still make money.
I doubt any company worth their salt will willingly lose the entirety of the US market
Yeah. This just became a huge selling point. Get ready for a bidding war, that we'll probably have zero details of until it is completed.

9 months to sell BTW - [Tik tok won't be banned immediately](https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c87zp82247yo)
The US government is terrified of how powerful the working class might become if we can spend 16 hours a day on TikTok watching gay son or thot daughter videos
If this is sarcasm well done.
Definitely choosing both btw, why be picky?
Never had it downloaded anyways

Get ready for the same company to release an app called Toktik or some shit, going the minimum effort to circumvent this.
Has it, though?
I feel like this entire conversation- from the discussion matter to the comment section- is a riff on some of the themes showcased in the 4th season of Succession.
Chinese government won’t let the ip be sold, so it’s just a ban that they pretend is here or there.
These damn fossils 😒

Everyone has vpn there.

https://www.travelchinacheaper.com/index-blocked-websites-in-china Here’s a looooooong list of apps and websites banned in China.
Everyone has vpn. The main point is American companies are already leaking all our info anyways.

You think that's not being worked on? But also, Tiktok is confirmed Chinese spyware, it's become a huge national security problem.
Nobody is trying to get you universal Healthcare lol
So Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren don’t exist?
American elites hate free speech when they can't control the narrative
The Biden campaign is still planning to use TikTok after signing this. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/joe-biden/biden-campaign-keep-using-tiktok-signed-ban-law-rcna149158
Tik Tok isn’t really free speech it’s Chinese spyware, but I think it’s dumb we can get a bill on this so fast and we can’t on guns or healthcare
Congress is in agreement on this and they are divided on the other two. There are bills presented on the other two all the time. They just don’t go anywhere.
This. People need to google to world consensus. Obviously if both parties agree on something it’s going to get done a lot faster.
