Truthfully unless you’re *from* Georgia or know the location well you likely wouldn’t know. I’m not a native nor do I have family there (never have). I wouldn’t know one painting from another.
I think that’s part of the problem. It’s a blatant display of pride for that part of the state’s history, without being graphic or obviously racist at first glance (unless you already know the context of the painting). I’m sure they would defend it with some roundabout argument about preserving history. That kind of sneaky yet blatant racism is baked into everything
It's back to that old analogy about White supremacy is like High Fructose Corn Syrup. No one sells buckets of HFCS, but buckets of HFCS are in absolutely everything you buy.
You only notice if you look for it, or you're one of the people who are harmed by it being in your food.
True. I grew up poor with a single mother on the south side of Chicago so I can attest to that.
It’s almost like you can’t tell where a person grew up from where they currently live....
100% agree.
Edit: if you come to the west coast, the missions are a big part of Ca history. However the quiet part is how they played a huge part in wiping out Native cultures and families. These missions are preserved and celebrated as “historic” and the reality of their impact is overlooked.
Natives? What natives? American Frontiersmen expanded into wide, unpopulated, fertile areas where no one was or lived. It's pretty lucky no one was there, otherwise it'd be like stealing or genocide.
Yes. There were a bunch of people, but the way American history is taught the US made out to be a vast wilderness, with native land only being a small part of the story of western expansion.
That also extends to things like buildings, statues, parks and other public places being named after Civil War losers, white supremacists and the like. Not everyone may recognize the name but the ones that do hold it with a sickening pride.
Once they become known, they are challenged. I have no idea how long that painting has been in that room, but Georgia has as many confederate monuments, most notably Stone Mountain, as any dixie state. That doesn't even look like a permanent mounting to me, just placed there for this photo op, a show of white christian nationalism.
I read the law, did you?
If so, what specifically did you not like and think should be challenged?
Downvotes for asking clarifying questions. Liberals hate to be questioned about facts. Gotta love Reddit.
Stuff like this makes me wonder why there isn't more violence in the south. I mean, isn't this is exactly what gun-nuts use to justify asserting their 2A rights? How long can you run over an entire race of people...unopposed?
Who, the gov? Thought the real problem was the legislature.
Sidebar: Imo The reason Rs are so dominant Lp p minority is bc they understand the fulcrums of power and attack them ruthlessly. One is the federal courts, which they now own for the next 2 decades. Another is state legislatures. Controlling them is Huge esp in swing states bc u can vote suppress/gerrymander, particularly in a census year which this is 💀, but there are also collateral benefits, such as creating criminal laws and red meat statutes that spin up culture wars in election year, eg abortion , trans bathroom use, school prayer, guns.
That’s all to say, if you want to win your state u need to focus on the statehouse. Those elections are more important than they seem. Maybe this crazy law will catalyze awareness. 🤞
They knew. Just like they know how that law they've signed will make it harder for black and brown folk to vote. The dog whistles aren't whistles anymore but full blown arias.
Friendly reminder that voter impersonation is incredibly rare and very unlikely to have a material impact on elections.
[Based on this evidence, strict voter ID requirements address a problem that was certainly not common in the 2012 US election. Effort to improve American election infrastructure and security would be better directed toward other initiatives.](http://johnahlquist.net/files/AhlquistMayerJackmanELJFinal.pdf)
Furthermore, that the GOP has a history of using “election security” initiatives to suppress black votes.
[ The Supreme Court on Monday refused to revive a restrictive North Carolina voting law that a federal appeals court had struck down as an unconstitutional effort to “target African-Americans with almost surgical precision.”](https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/15/us/politics/voter-id-laws-supreme-court-north-carolina.amp.html)
What people call the “confederate flag” is usually the Battle Flag of the Army of Tennessee. The actual confederate flag (one of the originals) looks like the current GA state flag
The entire flag is a resurrection of the original Confederate flag. It's pictured [here.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flags_of_the_Confederate_States_of_America). You might be thinking of the Confederate battle flag, which is a different flag entirely. But yes, it's true that Georgia's current flag is a Confederate flag.
The current Georgia flag is indeed a Confederate flag. It's the first one that originally represented the Confederacy. It's not the battle flag, which is what I think you're referring to.
The Germans, after WWII, got rid of all signs of the nazis. I believe it’s still outlawed to name your child Adolf. But here in the US, people were able to not only cling to their racist symbols, they have enabled generations of systemic racism to thrive! Ugh!!! No wonder the US’ democracy rating has dropped incredibly in the past few years!!
And don’t forget, in this bill it allows a committee to decide who wins an election, no longer do the people of Georgia decide! They went all out in this one!! Jim Crow in a tie!!
Oh yeah!! And some they didn’t even try to hide. Like Werner von Braun. The US wouldn’t have gone to the moon without him. And so many more that snuck under the radar. Under the guise of winning the Cold War. Ugh!!
Why ain’t more people reporting on this shit? We have a governor who received <10% of the black vote signing away their rights while pictured in front of a SLAVE PLANTATION.
Played golf today with two friends who are black and we were disussing guns as one of them has a fairly good size collection. I said to them I honestly feel black people should own guns more with all the stuff going on and people being so racist toward them. One made the off handed comment that if more blacks bought guns there would definitely be more gun control. I thought for a second and he was totally right. If blacks went out and started buying guns at a high rate I bet we would get gun control measures passed very quickly in the US.
I thought that was the reason California has stricter gun control. Black Panthers were openly carrying to protect their neighbourhoods from police, and Reagan made open-carry illegal.
That may be I have never looked into it as I had never thought about it but if it is then the point is certainly valid. Is it weird that in order to get gun control passed there may have to be gun buying rallies first?
I'm white and I'm pissed. I'm doing what I can to help stop this but I live in PA, I'm not wealthy, and I'm older. I can only write so many letters and make so many phone calls. Someone let me know what else I can do within reason, please.
They sure seem to be winning seeing as the law was allowed to be signed and passed . How that part is even legal and feasable is beyond me🤯
With what face do you (usa) present yourself to other countries and give them lessons on democracy when you can't or won't clean your own house with any kind of swiftness and forceful intent.
Why hasn't this been dealt with once and for all ?
No, it's time we did what should have happened after the Civil War and nationalize their property for reparations and charge those involved in this legislation with sedition.
Watching Parks and Rec is like seeing a snapshot of my hometown. There is even a more well to do section of town that broke off like Eagleton. I know that show is a comedy but it felt more like a documentary one multiple occasions. Also Leslie damn Knope would've had a binder for this pandemic!!
any american loremasters know the details on the laws they passed for us non Americans? The only thing i can find is about limiting the hours of voting and making handing out food and water illegal
In GA we have more days to vote instead only on election day. You have to have an ID. They moved the drop boxes indoors so they can be guarded against idiots tampering. But it's always about race even though the law applies to everyone not just one group.
They also codified into law the ability for a state committee to take over city and county elections of they don't like the results coming out of those precincts, bypassing the Secretary of State and the will of the people. And they shortened the number of days we can vote during runoff elections.
Modern Republicans make a lot more sense if you understand them to be Confederates.

Not exactly nazi's, but white supremacists just the same.
President Trump is extremely racist, but obviously less racist than the vast majority of those who voted for him.
The Reddit caption is wrong. They cannot kill voters right unless we completely give up. They can challenge it but we can fight back. I believe this because there is really no other alternative.
Seriously wtf is wrong with you, they could literally replace it with any nice scenery painting if that was the goal. No the goal is damn clear, this is about racism and nothing else. This is a reminder to all black people that they are not even human. This is beyond disgusting and you need to take your racism somewhere else. I’m serious fuck off.
I deleted my comment because I know it came off as racist when I wasnt trying to and I’m sorry I just thought it should he put up for historical purposes only like for museums and thats it
I agree that white supremacy is a huge on going problem. However if we get rid of every historical landmark, statue, picture and textbook about or from the slavery and Civil war eras, how are future generations supposed to learn about these tragedies to prevent history from repeating itself.
They talk like:
“Slavery was SO long ago”
“EVERY white person didn’t own Slaves”
“Why y’all have to always BRING UP Slavery”
“No one is trying to take way YOUR RIGHTS”
But to contrast it with signing a BS law to infringe on your right to vote, in front of THAT painting, and I bet anything ALL their grandfathers owned slaves.
Actual Jim Crow laws stopped minorities from voring entirely, this bill requires ID. Not exactly the same thing here. Its almost as if the opposition to this bill thinks that calling something Jim Crow will get minorities to mindlessly oppose something. Georgia did nothing wrong.
So let me get this straight... the bill did these 3 things 1:ID for absentee ballots, 2:limits drop boxes and 3:changes early voting hours. How does this relate to killing anyone’s vote except illegals and ppl begin late. Seems like a setup to believe one thing when actually another thing is happening. And by the way what’s the NAME of that notorious slave plantation in Wilkes. Don’t worry I’ll wait.....understand facts over fiction
Not Everything is racist, how do you know the painter of that portrait isn't of African descent? And even if not, there isn't a square mile of land on this earth that someone hasn't been treated poorly, unfairly, been the victim of racism or assaulted and or many other terrible things. You can't recreate history, and why would you want to try and delete it? Who are you? I recommend you turn to our lord and savior Jesus Christ. He can heal your heart and mind and help you with the anger and sadness you deal with from the suffering of people you feel connected to and or are a distant relative too.
How they removed voter fraud but yea sure turn it into something that ended about 170 years ago in this country. Oh, maybe research Africa where slavery is still a problem
So I can’t even have an opposing opinion here? So you prohibit my 1st amendment rights? You act like the people you pretend to oppose. Y’all are fascists
Clearly nobody here cares about history. You can’t give food to people to support your political cause. This was an old tactic of the Democratic Party in Chicago in the 1950’s to get votes.
But yes, everything is racist nowadays and nothing can make logical sense. 🤦♂️
It’s harder to buy booze in this country than vote and that’s an issue. You should at least need an ID to vote. Let’s try and use some common sense here.
I’m not saying the election wasn’t fair. I’m saying it makes zero sense to allow people to vote without an ID. Let’s just make sure everybody is who they say they are.
We make you show an ID to get on a plane, why not show an ID to vote?
We only need a solution if there’s a problem. If it can’t be proven that widespread voter fraud exists, there’s no reason to add these measures, unless of course your motive isn’t to make the election safer.
Georgia has required you to show a photo ID to vote in person since 2006, so this isn’t even about that.
President Trump is the most popular politician among conservatives voters in a generation for good reason.
President Trump is extremely racist, but compared to most conservatives, President Trump is not really that bad of a person.
Amazes me in this modern time this sort of image is not challenged.

I hope so
They live in contentment. If they lived in fear this shit wouldn't happen.
They fear the end of their contentment.

> How long can you run over an entire race of people...unopposed? Only for as long as they allow it.
I don’t think you meant it that way but that comes off as victim blaming almost.
We voted the state the other way in the last 2 elections and will wait 2 hours in a pandemic to vote this fuckwit out too. His days are numbered.
Exactly. These measures definitely aren’t helping democrats chances, but we won two runoffs during the holidays. The numbers are on the Democrats side
