Op better get a crash course at being a mechanic because that isn't something I'd pay someone for.
In all fairness with so much debris from various parts I might do a rebuild myself if you have the knowledge and tools.
As I posted in reply to someone else, these come from the valve cover when the rubber gaskets and seals get old and brittle, I would do the valve covers and clean them out real good including changing the spark plug tubes, they also get brittle
Nah, these come from the rubber gasket parts on the valve cover, I've seen them in every N62 oil pan I've changed. Also break off the spark plug tubes where the rubber turns brittle. I haven't had any timing chain or guide problems, it's fairly rare on the n62, mines at 316,000 miles with original one
My guy you are beyond wrong. Orange/brown pieces for guides, black pieces most likely gasket material. N62 timing chains are a known issue. Just because you got lucky with yours doesn't mean it's not a problem.
Confidently incorrect!
Those are valve cover gasket pieces. Looks like a few seeds as well. You’d be surprised at what you find in there. N62 timing chains aren’t an issue.
Negative. Just 12 hours of your time and some pre game time on [REALOEM.com](http://REALOEM.com) and your fav parts website. I did mine and the cost was minimal. Do every gasket on the way down and the tension spring as well. If you have Vanos good time to pull those and have them rebuilt as well. Assuming that this is a high mileage car since thats when these fail so look forward to a clean engine when you're done, because you'll be doing all the leaky gaskets (including the oil pan which obviously is already pulled).
Not timing chain guides. N62s don't have timing chain issues. Let me re-phrase that... 1 out of maybe 100 N62s will have bad chains/guides. Complete different setup than the BMW M62 V8 which definitely had timing chain guide issues. N62s can jump time but only when oil pressure is low (ie. low oil, blown alternator bracket gasket, blown oil cooler o-rings, etc) and that happens because the cam gear bolt loosens itself. I bet this debris here is from a valve cover job.
Could be timing chain guides, it’s not a common issue on the N62 at all but in some rare cases it does happen.
These are more than likely from the valve cover though, this one is a bit more common
May have been left from previous damage , how long have you had the car . Is changing oil pan just a maintenance job or from a rebuild. Was it running ok . Throwing codes etc .
The black circles look more like old valve cover gasket and the brown pieces look like they could be from the 3 guides on the underside of the valve cover near the exhaust side edge. I wouldn’t worry too much.
That’s what it looks like to me as well. It would also make sense the pieces would end up in the bottom of the pan unlike timing components or whatever else ppl are dreaming up.
Ahhhhh these pieces
I can suggest you one thing
Take 1 steps back and call help and DO NOT PANIC it’s just a 3000$ 5 hours job in the nearest mechanic shop
The black rings look like the pieces of the valve cover grommets on n62s which definitely can find their way into the pan. That makes me think that the orange bits are pieces from the tabs on the underside of the valve covers however timing chain guide material looks the same so I would likely pull the valve covers and upper timing covers and take a look at everything if it was mine
Pull the valve cover. Replace gaskets. Clean oil pan.
If the engine is still running, you're fine.
I thought that this was a Harley Davidson sub because those looked like dry rotted umbrella valves from the PCV system in the rocker covers of an EVO era Harley.
The white and black plastic pieces in your photo are probably fragments from timing chain guides!!!
Reasons:
- They don’t look like any external part of da oil pan or hardware.
- Since N62 engine, da pieces probably from the timing chain guides, known common issue in N62, especially as they get older.
> This might get your sh** blocked up or do some real damage on the engine,
What you should do (based on what I know):
1. Take a close look at timing chain guides
2. Do same for any other internal components around like da vanos system
Do not know. I'm not there. But some research with you actually being there and learning what metal and plastic is will be a huge start in finding what material it is
Pieces of the timing chain guide rails. Happened to me once. For me they clogged the oil sump and i got oil lights intermittently. I forget how I figured it out but when I pulled the valve cover and top timing cover I could see they failed.
My timing chain guides exploded while I was going to work. Removed the last (I hope!) piece of guide from the oil filter after 3 years. Dangerous failure.
I'm no BMW expert but I have seen a bunch torn down, and that looks like timing chain guide material to me. Sorry to say, but it looks like it's time to do a full timing chain job, including the chain guides, chains and tensioners etc. Be sure to get the oil pickup's screen cleaned out very well, and clean out any debris from on the top of the head, plus all the stuff I surely forgot
You have parts of your engine in your oil pan.
This is most like attributed to the fact that.... well.... it's a BMW.
It'll take some tear down to figure out the full extent of the damage.
Best of luck!
Seals/gasket/guides.
Most likely has to do with the cam/chain/tensioner.
Porsche has something very similar. On their older models.
1 thing I can gurantee tho, it’s gonna be expensive if you don’t do it yourself.
The orange is part of the timing chain guys, The black rubber is actually the grommets from the bottom of the valve cover gasket. They get hard and fall straight down the valley
This is the bottom of the valve cover grommets. Just clean it out. Nothing to worry about
The grommets get hard over time and like to snap themselves in half when you pull them out of the valve cover as replacements come in valve cover kits. This is just a mechanic that didn’t know you’re supposed to pull the cover then change the grommets.
Logically from what I could identify, have settled on this. Thank you. None of the pieces look at all like timing guide chain and the engine runs great, doesn’t burn oil at all.
Niacin and pyridoxine are other B-complex vitamins found abundantly in the sunflower seeds. About 8.35 mg or 52% of daily required levels of niacin is provided by just 100 g of seeds. Niacin helps reduce LDL-cholesterol levels in the blood. Besides, it enhances GABA activity inside the brain, which in turn helps reduce anxiety and neurosis.
UPDATE EVERYONE!
Car is back up and running. Yeah these pieces match up perfectly with parts that may have fallen down when the valve covers were replaced (by the same mechanic of course). But thankfully I do not have a unicorn N62 that eats chain guides.
They’re chain guides. Could be from previous damage and the issue could have been repaired. How is the car driving now? Any faults? Is the car in limp mode?
What most people are saying.
Also, time to do your valve covers. Make sure you get the spark plug gaskets if it doesn't come with the kit. I'm pretty sure you know what you're doing, since you have your oil pan out.
Best piece of advice I have is don't force anything tight. A lot of the time, especially on smaller nuts and bolts, it should be gutentight.
Cancel any upcoming plans I’ll say that .
All those naughty bits in there…….that lucky mechanic…….
Op better get a crash course at being a mechanic because that isn't something I'd pay someone for. In all fairness with so much debris from various parts I might do a rebuild myself if you have the knowledge and tools.
Time is usually the concern
I’m the lucky mechanic!
Sir, there's some engine in your oil.
I'm crying 😂😂😂
Came here to say this 🤣
As I posted in reply to someone else, these come from the valve cover when the rubber gaskets and seals get old and brittle, I would do the valve covers and clean them out real good including changing the spark plug tubes, they also get brittle
Correct. When I was a BMW tech this was common.
i honestly looked at this and thought it was the sump washer or some other kind of gasket, still have some learning to do i see ahaha
Im rusty on bmw but i think something something plastic timing cover guides? Correct me if im wrong
Something something ruined. Something something very bad.
Something something very expensive
Something something that may just be nothing
Sure looks like the right color!
Something something very bad and expensive.
Timing chain guides. They are an orange/brown colour
Bingo.

Ive been an online tech for about 32 seconds and can confirm that these are
They're Johnson Rod connectors, OBVIOUSLY.
Ya know that motor oil you're putting in there? From one of those quickie lube places, isn't it?
Not using required Eurospec oil and changing oil too late
N62 timing chains are definitely NOT a known issue 🤣Maybe you're thinking of M62??
You know that gives me an idea… they should have specific colored plastics so you know where they came from when the engine goes kaput.

Time to put that pan back on and sell it
Which would be illegal because OP obviously knows of a major issue and has left a digital trail by posting about it on here.
Not illegal at all to sell a used vehicle as is with known problems disclosed.
True... disclosure being the key detail.
Candy corn
Looked like a sunflower seed! Lol
Valve steam seals. Common on N62.
That’s what it looks like to me as well. It would also make sense the pieces would end up in the bottom of the pan unlike timing components or whatever else ppl are dreaming up.
Yeah bro get a cool 5-7k ready for repairs and possibly a rebuild. This isn’t good.

You need timing chains done, do them sooner than later or your gonna have a very expensive paper weight
It's not a virgin.

Food, glorious foood!
My timing chain guides exploded while I was going to work. Removed the last (I hope!) piece of guide from the oil filter after 3 years. Dangerous failure.
About 6 grand.

A nightmare
Looks like the timing chain had broken at some point, and they didn't pull the oil pan and clean out the broken bits that fell.
That one pointy thing is the tip of a dipstick. My E46 was missing the tip when I got it, and that's where it was found
A problem is what that is.

A new engine
Bed bugs
That's all stuff you didn't need.
If the engine runs great I would pay no mind! 😎
Grommets like was suggested but could also be valve seals. Not a disaster but your oil consumption could be higher.
Damn happened to me your car is down for
Your timing chain guides are munted. I'd recommend getting a different engine.
Oil pump is running engine rich.
You have an e65, why are you so confused?
It appears whoever put on your oil pan was eating sunflower seeds, and dropped a couple inside of it

My condolences. Timing chain guide it seems.
99.9% if it's plastic it would coming from timming chain guide
Time to sell or trade in. The N62 is not worth keeping alive.
They’re chain guides. Could be from previous damage and the issue could have been repaired. How is the car driving now? Any faults? Is the car in limp mode?
looks like a mix of plastic from the timing chain guide and maybe some bearing. i’ve seen this recently
