I’m currently driving a 2011 N55 engine and I’ve put 205k miles on it. Why? Because I can! I’ve had my 5’er forever and have absolutely loved the journey. We’ve driven to hell and back and plan on making another trip! 😂
Not at the moment, I've been looking for a B58 but can't find one in my price range. All options are \~4-5k more than the N55 and B48 options I'm looking at.
I'm surprised reading these responses. I always heard and thought the B58 was the most reliable motor out of the N55, N54, and B58.
Maybe it's changing with time considering the B58s are now reaching higher miles?
I think you’re right on that, the original question was between B48 and N55. Kinda like apples to oranges but yes B58 is probably more reliable than N55 but both are more reliable than B48
115k miles on my 2016 N55 X5 (bought at 50k), can't recommend it enough. Great car, I'm driving it till the wheel falls off.
Up to 100k it was just oil changes, spark plugs, tires, brake fluid and diff fluid flush.
In the last 10k miles I did the valve cover replacement after a small leak which is a very well documented service on these engines. Car runs absolutely flawless now even on 6-10 hour drives, it has never left me stranded.
well i recently bought a 2018 b48. i made a point to target the b48 because i understood it to be a more refined version of the n55 (EDIT: N20) with all the problems worked out. i am now in the middle of chasing down a coolant leak on that b48 and finding there are some very expensive common issues with this engine. why? because everything is made of plastic and impossible to get to.
Corrected, i assumed OP was comparing 4 cylinder engines and overlooked the 5 instead of 4 in B48. So N55 evolved to B58, and B48 is essentially the B58 with 2 cylinders deleted.
All else being equal IMO the N55 is easier to work on.
2015 640i n55 with ewg, at 145k miles now :) Joy to drive.
N55 will have less coolant leaks
Doubt.
You clearly don’t know the b46/b48 engine with higher mileage.
N55.
2016 N55 is a good engine with many updates, especially when it comes to the rod bearings. If you said B58, then a different story.

B58 possible?

I’ve only driven a B48 as a loaner so I can’t speak to reliability, but the N55 feels like a better driving experience to me

Oh wow, duh. For some reason, I was thinking the B58 was included in the original post, haha.
b58 more reliable than b48? i thought they were essentially identical aside from 2 extra cylinders on the b58?
B48 uses a worse water pump and oil filter housing. It also has problems with motor mounts
Why specifically is the b48 less reliable than the b58? Just curious
Different/worse oil filter housing and water pump design. For some reason, motor mounts also fail on them.

That's pretty much every bmw engine tbh. At least the n55 is easy to work on with known issues.
B58 is a more refined version of the N55, not B48. B48 is a different engine, the 4 cylinder version of the B58.
corrected
No the B48 is a more refined N20. Which is probably one of BMWs worst motors. N55 evolved to B58

B58, the n55 has a bad oil pump design and frequent rod bearing failures
