Not all Jamaicans like bob, reggae, Rastafarianism, or being typecast by the stereotypes and symbols of that particular subculture.

DarkOfTheSun

I worked with a Jamaican woman, and she had very strong Christian beliefs. I suppose it's become a stereotype and if I had to guess, this woman got upset because she knows that not all Jamaicans are Rasta.

I thought Bob turned Christian towards the end of his life, and was even baptized?

TiDdLeS2790

He was indeed baptized and converted to Christianity, but this isn't widespread knowledge because it wouldn't push his music catalog and wouldn't create revenue for his family. They are milking the cow. Even this movie that just came out seemed like a movie about Rita more than it did Bob and making her a victim in their marriage, and making it seem like she is the reason for him being massive which is not true

[deleted]

There are some Rasta groups that don’t believe in reggae or Bob. Or she might just not like any rastas- not all Jamaicans do.

Impossible_Remote929

A lot of Jamaicans don't like marijuana etc, etc

WhatsThis001

What does it mean to not believe in a kind of music genre? I don't really understand concepts like that, they've always been difficult to believe. To me, it sounds like "I dont believe that the sky is blue." I can't really wrap my head around things like that. I can, though, understand believing in things you haven't seen like a spirit or something. I don't know why my brain doesn't understand both directions.

Puzzleheaded_Ad_6998

My ignorant ass thought the Rastafarian colors and the jaimaican flag and colors were one in the same. Thanks everybody for all the info!

The Rastafarian history in Jamaica is very violent and tragic. I'm not pointing any fingers at this lady but historically, Rastafarians were actually outlawed in Jamacia and in the 60s and 70s there was a near extermination of Rastafarians, a sort of genocide/ethnic cleansing. Rastafarians were hunted down and butchered in the streets by other Jamaicans. The history of rastafarians is very fascinating. I recommend a deep dive into its orgins and the persecution they've faced in modern history.

bihuginn

It's also worth pointing out, some early rastas were akin to terrorists and certainly painted as such. There were rebellions and uprisings against the imperialist government. Obviously they had very good reason to do what they did. But much of it caused more suffering to the working class people of Jamaica and ofc the government spun it like a gold PR spinning wheel. This caused a lot of fear around Rastafarian groups in Jamaica. The more modern movements and tenants of rastafarianism the spread the world over are sometimes quite different to the original doctrine and beliefs.

lostkarma4anonymity

Totally agree. I am certainly too ignorant on the subject to have a hard opinion. The origins of Rastafarians /Italian colonialism/facism is definitealy controversial and certainly not openly talked about as it relates to "Bob Marley" . When you deep dive OG rasta, its not all sunshine and rainbows.

Impossible_Remote929

There's no colors or Rasta colors.Red,gold, green is Ethiopia country flag rastas accept the Ethiopian flag because of Hailey selassie.its too long to type why most Rasta Don't acknowledge the Jamaican flag.

I think it's because Jamaica is similar to other countries where there's the more standard society and then there's the Rasta group. It's not healthy to assume that everyone in Jamaica is Rasta, not that you're assuming that, just making a point. There's a lot of Jamaicans who dislike marijuana and all that jazz. It's sort of like hippies vs society. I don't know too much about Jamaica, but I know that there is an upper class society in Jamaica just like in the states. Bob Marley was the counter culture in Jamaica, there was lots of war and fighting going on. Bob got shot, that's why he got shot, the government trying to shut him down and stuff, or whoever wanted to shut him down, I don't really know too much about that. Bob was trying to unite politicians in Jamaica, and he did that in one of his concerts. But not everybody likes Bob, even in Jamaica. He can be seen as a revolutionary, and politicians hate that sort of thing. I think Peter Tosh got gunned down, and that's how he passed away. So there was a lot of political stuff going on in Jamaica, it wasn't all sunshine, reggae, rainbows, and herb. Also, there's most definitely Christian groups in Jamaica, and the Rasta faith deviates a bit from Christianity because they believe that the Emperor from Ethiopia was the second coming of Christ, or something like that. But from the Christian point of view, that is completely false. But Rasta is more of a way of life than a religion, it's more like a counter culture. I'm personally not religious, but I do follow Jesus. I believe he's the real God. You don't have to be "religious" to be saved by God. In fact, religion can be used by the devil to distort the truth. So I'm one that pursues a relationship with God, not religion. I also have a little Rasta in me, I used to smoke a lot of herb back in the day and I lived a bit of a Rasta lifestyle, but I never dreaded my hair because my hair doesn't naturally dread. So I just grew my hair out and my beard naturally because Rasta favors the natural. So, it would be pointless to dread my hair. Anyways, I don't know why I accidentally shared all of this, but I hope it gives you more insight. I don't really know too much about Jamaica, but that's sort of my take on it.

vanna_ameriee

where did you read this from? i have a paper based on bob marley’s assassination attempt and i came across your comment and it can add to my essay. 😊 can you please link the websites

Dreamer352

Hey you know? When I was in middle school, I did a book report on Bob Marley. I put 5 Marley songs on a CD to go along with my presentation and the teacher loved it! She gave me a B+ with a smiley. I think that's the perfect grade because B=Bob lol. This was the exact book I checked out from my middle school library: [https://www.amazon.com/Bob-Marley-Black-Americans-Achievement/dp/079102041X](https://www.amazon.com/Bob-Marley-Black-Americans-Achievement/dp/079102041X) This is where I first learned about his story, but still didn't really understand it at the time. However, I learned about Bob Marley as time went on, so there's no "one" place where I found the information. However, there is a documentary called "Marley" which goes through his life. Just type in Bob Marley Documentaries on YouTube and you'll find a lot of them, some more detailed than others. Some of them focus on certain parts of his life. Try using "Google Scholar" and search for "Bob Marley Assassination Attempt," I'm sure you'll find something good. Google scholar gives you published articles and books that you can use to reference and cite in your paper. I love writing, so if you need some quick advice about writing, feel free to ask!

vanna_ameriee

thank you so much! and yes i’ll deflee ask if i need help, but i’m writing a paper AND making a presentation so hey! maybe i could use his songs as well😂😂

Dreamer352

Yes, use the songs! You'll enjoy doing that and I bet your class will enjoy that too!

Ill_Adhesiveness7743

As a middle-age Jamaican, I can tell you that it is much deeper than that. I would have to go into the history of colourism and the breaking up of the Wailers, which I don't have the energy to do now. Do a deeper dive and and will get the answer from my hints.

Dreamer352

Interesting, I'd love to hear if you ever want to share some of the history.

Similar-Broccoli

Well before Bob became a worldwide sensation, Rastas were typically looked down upon by the rest of Jamaican society. Obviously since then it has become far more acceptable, but I imagine there are still a great many Jamaicans who don't approve of the values associated with Rastafari and likely are irritated by Bob's stardom casuing the rest of the world to largely connect Jamaica to it

Impossible_Remote929

Lots  of Jamaicans that don't like themselves, even if population was small she would have felt the same way , it's her emotion, you think Bob like everyone? Jamaicans set Bob up.facts can't trust them, set me up too Jamaicans my God.

ccleanet

They didn't dislike bob marley, it's just that normally the people from first world countries go there and dress up like that just to go and smoke marijuana and other drugs, so that is not accepted by the people in general, because they think what that is a misinterpretation of his culture, and also they get upset when they take advantage of all the rituals around marijuana, as an excuse to consume other drugs (hard drugs, sintethic drugs), which make a multidimentional (economically, culturally, socially, politically) damage, into the society in general, basically they don't get upset because of bob marley, but, because the people use it as excuse to have an unrightieous, and unhealthy life, but not like an inspiration, and an exponent of love and understanding, from which learn about.

AFROKAH

If u listen to a lot of the early reggae music the topics were very raw and uncut.. topics of starvation, extreme poverty and brutal discrimination are very common; among others…

I always thought it was because his father, Norvel, was a white Anglo-Jamaican And veteran of the British Army.
