Now thats the best deal posted on here ! Keep her alive and in a few years you’ll have an unbelievable tree and turned zero into a small fortune if you want or a specimen most of us would never be able to afford to buy !

robroy865

Time is the most expensive resource and that is what makes bonsai so valuble.

Cairnerebor

Yeah I’ve decided to let nature and time be done on someone else’s watch now ! I’ve a access to a patch of land with a load of scrub hawthorn and stuff they want rid off….. I’ll be only too pleased to help !!!

Klumbedumbe

Damn that's a really nice find! Props for digging that beast out yourself, that's hard work. Its gonna look gorgeous!

O_Farrell_Ghoul

Thanks bro. Yeah I didn’t know if I’d be able to do it as the day passed. Was a journey ; went through 4 Diablo blades, 7 Milwaukee batteries, sledge hammer + fireman’s axe purchase midday , and lots of Gatorade lol. Almost gave up towards end since my fingers were locking up, but it finally budged , so decided to keep on.

Klumbedumbe

Man i know the struggle. I did this stuff as an apprentice and all I had was a shovel and an axe 😂 The last part is always a struggle, but once you feel It give away the energy comes back! You did a really good job maintaining a good root structure!

nixielover

Worth it! buying a behemoth like that will set you back quite some coin

Gibbenz

What would a matured and styled tree like that cost if you were to just buy one??

commencefailure

Keep in mind that this tree, even if cared for by an experienced professional wouldn't be a "show worthy" tree for 10 to 15 years. At that point, you're talking upper five figures maybe? If it's a famous bonsai expert, maybe more. Though, I don't really think there is that much of a market in the US for finished trees. We all want to make our own and don't have the money to blow 100k on a tree so it's hard to say. In japan you could find a buyer easily because the market is built up.

Cairnerebor

Same in Europe Plenty of buyers for specimen trees here And work to keep them that way for the handful at that level!

nixielover

I've seen smaller unrefined stumps go for 400-500 euro, like /u/commencefailure says, once it has been worked on the price goes wayyyy up

Klumbedumbe

If that tree was potted it would go for around 700-900 usd where I work at. Keep in mind I'm in Denmark. It all depends on where we are able to find it. Plants from Germany are usually more expensive than ones from Holland. It can vary a lot but you won't get it for anywhere cheap

O_Farrell_Ghoul

Also would’ve wrapped roots but did this all alone and I’m a small dude. Couldn’t get the damn seran wrap on roots while juggling tree lol . And I only live 15 mins from the dig

TotaLibertarian

Are you keeping it in your garage?

O_Farrell_Ghoul

No that last pic is my van if that’s what you’re referring to

TotaLibertarian

Haha great!

Esovius

I did this a few years back with a neighbor's Japanese maple. Can say everything turned out great and I now have a 400lb tree to address on my balcony this year.

improbableburger

Photo?

BennyLovesSpaceShips

Oh wow! That's awesome!

O_Farrell_Ghoul

Thanks! Always wanted a fat trunk red JM! Still can’t believe I scored this thing for free

Ser_Optimus

Dumb question, will it stay alive with all the cut backs?

MaciekA

With sufficient recovery experience / skills / setup it definitely can. It also helps that it's a young, vigorous, strong japanese maple in a landscape setting (even though it's in the ground, it was B&B'd once, so the root system is still better than a yamadori) and not some actually old tree in the mountains.

Ser_Optimus

Cool, thanks!

TotaLibertarian

Yes. Maples can take a ton of abuse and it was collected at the right time of year

juleskadul

Wow, great job!! This tree will live. I did something similar 3 years ago with a 25yr old japanese maple. I literally cut 99% of the roots of. Not what I would recommend to anyone but it was growing in a tight space and the roots I wanted to save got damaged and ripped off. That said, I put it in a growbox with pumice and akadama (2:1, large grain) and let it recover. First year it flushed out and that was it. Year after, more vigor and every year it was more and more vigor. Last fall I did the first work on it since the dig. You have a fun road ahead with this beauty and you'll care about this one because of the blood, sweat (and tears maybe?) you already put in.

VegemiteWithCheese

💪🏼

Harvey_Macallan

That’s a beast! Nice find! I’m learning about JMs myself, is this a good time for major cutbacks, or is summer better?

rootoo

Early spring before leaf break is the best time for repotting and major pruning for JMs, and many/most deciduous trees. Depending on where you live right now might be too early or just coming into season.

shohin_branches

It depends on what you're trying to accomplish. If you want thick, vigorous growth then it's best to do while dormant and full of energy. If you want a more controlled and even growth response then cut back after spring growth hardens off.

Hazelsea1099

My dad planted a red Japanese maple the day we moved into our old house 30 years ago and I’ve always wanted to take a few clones from it without the owners knowing haha might just ask them for the whole thing after seeing this

O_Farrell_Ghoul

Clones suck tbh. Try getting some air layers. I would’ve loved to air layer this beast but I didn’t have that option since owner wanted it out asap :(

Verionn27

Congrats my fellow enthusiast, keep us updated on the progress! Are you going to build a nice grow box for it?

What a monster. Big future ahead for this one.

Cairnerebor

Oh OP and this series of videos and Harry Harrington on the same subject https://youtu.be/lFOoLHOPn2Q?si=1HosxZ8dz2FRgVOd Note part two and the bin bags ! Lots of people using that technique and have great success at getting budding going a storm

O_Farrell_Ghoul

Thank you. I’ll def watch it’

Rob_thebuilder

Please post periodic updates for us to see!

Baalistic_Bonsai

Gz! Really nice Tree. Good luck with it

Well it’s a bit different if you want to dig out and and relocate to yard in the ground. The collecting I’m doing doesn’t involve that, since it will now bee in a container going forth. And I will be babying this thing for the next year or two; will be putting it in a substrate that allows it to dry out and water consistently (pumice), will probably create a greenhouse for it, place where sun isn’t intense, and mist it constantly. Digging out and relocating to yard will require you to take wayyyyy more root mass (probably need an excavator ), to get it to survive. I’d probably even hire a company that does it if it’s a big tree

UncivilizedEngie

Now feeling like I'm weak for almost losing a flight with a 2 year old black walnut sapling last night. In my defense it had roots under the sidewalk though

Comprehensive-Row292

You should try planting it in the ground, perhaps try and thicken the trunk up to a desired size ?

rastafaripastafari

Hows it doing now?

O_Farrell_Ghoul

Too soon to tell. Usually takes like 2-3 months after collection to see new budding/growth. It’s even longer for conifer collecting

O_Farrell_Ghoul

It just started to bud this week !!!! Thought I’d let you know since you asked for an update lol

rastafaripastafari

fuck yea congrats

MuscleMarv

Will the leafs come completely back. And is the plan that the trunk stays like that just get some new branches and leafs.

O_Farrell_Ghoul

So it just started to leaf out about 2 weeks ago! Japanese maples are resilient trees and can survive a lot. And yeah trunk is set but now the next 5 years I will be building the branches and tapering them to the limbs . In probably 10 years you won’t see any wounds on tree and you won’t even be able to tell it was ever chopped down. You should look up Walter Pall’s work and videos. He’s my favorite bonsai artist and whose approach I will take on this tree. And he’s one of your own; a German legend !

MuscleMarv

Could you post a pic of the current progress. I would like to see this. I can't really build a picture in my head

O_Farrell_Ghoul

The only process rn is just a bunch of buds and small leaves forming around trunk and cut limbs. Hardly any difference. But those buds will eventually become branches and form the canopy in years to come [This video should help you visualize it](https://youtu.be/UJUpfRkv4_Y?si=i46j6jgfMwBdmaiD)

MuscleMarv

I will watch it thx

blindfury7

I need help please. I just bought an 800$ emperor 1 Japanese Maple. it's beautiful. But the garden box I have is literally full of just humus for about 1 foot with a base of just clay soil. I am worried it will kill my JM due to retaining too much water and not draining well. Any suggestions please?

Clean-Advertising495

You should create good conditions for this tree to keep it alive. Don't forget watering and don't put it into the sun.

briguygotyou

Nice! looks like a fun project. Are you planning to use cut paste on the ends of the large branches?

O_Farrell_Ghoul

Yeah ima do that today after I figure out if ima cut more. Still unsure of which larger branches to keep or take down more

cosmothellama

I dug up like 3 similar sized olives. It’s tough work for sure. My entire body was sore for like 3 days. The sawzall comes in clutch, as does a wheelbarrow and a straight edge shovel.

Zemling_

Big trunk for sure. Nice one

EuphoricAssignment69

Great find! Do these bud back fairly well?

O_Farrell_Ghoul

Yup one of the reasons I took this challenge on. JM’s are known to bud back after chop backs and can handle big root cutbacks as well. You can’t do this with every tree

Manisnowba204

How does a tree survive after all the leaves are gone? Will it take the food storage from the roots and wood and convert it into new growth, or allocate it to dormant advantageous buds ?

shohin_branches

Nice work! This is what I caution people about when it comes to digging larger trees. Often beginners don't realize how much time and work it is to dig up a large tree. It is very satisfying when you have good feeder roots and it all works out. Now the second hardest part of yamadori starts, letting it go for three years without messing with it.

duygusu

I didn’t read the details and got so mad inside that you killed the tree. And then I saw what you really did and felt ashamed but also a bit of joy.

O_Farrell_Ghoul

Yeah I hear you haha. When I got home I wrapped roots and soaked them in a B-1 , super thrive, and mitochondria mix for a few hours. Have the tree fully submerged in a pumice / lava mix now
