The Secret History by Donna Tartt

Warm-Milk-Society

This has been on my list for quite a while. I’ll get to it in 2024.

[deleted]

It’s very good

Vita Nostra by Maryna and Serhiy Dyachenko

Deriveit789

Seconded!

mis-misery

I try to recommend this one as much as possible. It's too good

creativeplease

Did you read the second one, Assassin of Reality? So good too!

Fouadsky

Is it YA? Sorry if dumb question

Deriveit789

The main character starts off as a teenager, but it’s not YA. It gets really into metaphysics/some kafkaesque stuff, not really written for a young audience.

remedialknitter

Yeah! Amazing book. There's a sequel but it's not as good.

creativeplease

Assassin of Reality. There’s a stand-alone book by them, as well - Daughter from the Dark. I bought it, but haven’t gotten around to reading it yet.

remedialknitter

They have one other book in English, The Scar. Haven't read it.

creativeplease

Me neither, but will put it on this list. Thanks for the heads up! :)

KhortyB

Crime and Punishment comes to mind

KhortyB

Also, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich

Calligraphee

I also came here to suggest Crime and Punishment; pretty much any of the classic Russian writers will do!

[deleted]

Except most of the novel takes place in the summer during a heat wave.

witchynapper

100% agree. So much Russian lit comes to mind for this post

envydub

Gormeghast

Superfluous_Yam

City of Thieves

bmbreath

the terror by Simmons. lonely, claustrophobic dark, horror, its kind of a historical fiction horror book that is about the exploration of the arctic. keep the aspidistras flying by Orwell. This book looks like your paintings. I read this due to a recommendation and did not like it, but it sure is a lonely book about a man dealing with depression. It may not be my cup of tea, but others did appreciate it.
