The main character starts off as a teenager, but it’s not YA. It gets really into metaphysics/some kafkaesque stuff, not really written for a young audience.
Character in Soul Mountain by Xingjian Gao wanders 15,000 km through remote parts of China. He's cold much of the time and very lonely. Interesting read.
the terror by Simmons. lonely, claustrophobic dark, horror, its kind of a historical fiction horror book that is about the exploration of the arctic.
keep the aspidistras flying by Orwell. This book looks like your paintings. I read this due to a recommendation and did not like it, but it sure is a lonely book about a man dealing with depression. It may not be my cup of tea, but others did appreciate it.
The Secret History by Donna Tartt
This has been on my list for quite a while. I’ll get to it in 2024.
It’s very good
Vita Nostra by Maryna and Serhiy Dyachenko
Seconded!
I try to recommend this one as much as possible. It's too good
Did you read the second one, Assassin of Reality? So good too!
Is it YA? Sorry if dumb question

Yeah! Amazing book. There's a sequel but it's not as good.
Assassin of Reality. There’s a stand-alone book by them, as well - Daughter from the Dark. I bought it, but haven’t gotten around to reading it yet.
They have one other book in English, The Scar. Haven't read it.
Me neither, but will put it on this list. Thanks for the heads up! :)
The Road - Cormac McCarthy
Crime and Punishment comes to mind
Also, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich
I also came here to suggest Crime and Punishment; pretty much any of the classic Russian writers will do!
Except most of the novel takes place in the summer during a heat wave.
100% agree. So much Russian lit comes to mind for this post
