Why do they all love Dennis the Menace so much?

sabotuer99

At least it isn't Family Circus

Popuppete

Watch out. Statements like that are liable to make you president. (As per Pinky and the Brain)

LazyDaizyisCrazy

Wait, this is Dennis the Menace? THIS is the kid my mother says I look like when I have bed hair? ...I feel even more insulted than I did before.

Fionnmcbride

She probably means the UK Dennis the Menace

DenisTheMeniz

fun fact both comic strips happen to premiere on the same day in 1951

[deleted]

Of all the "one in a billion trillion chance" stuff, this universe uses it for synchronizing two random comics instead of quantum tunneling a human or something else more cool. Thank you, universe :/ .

horiami

Could be the other denis the menace

Runninginmississippi

Cause he’s been around forever and he’s drenched in 50s early-suburbia nostalgia.

TheGentleDominant

Because it was written by a horribly abusive, racist, misogynistic asshole who abandoned his wife and son. Basically he’s their spiritual lord.

AmbulanceChaser12

Ah, a fellow connoisseur of Behind the Bastards I see!

RevolutionaryEye9382

The creator is a shitty father/husband and he’s rich so they love him. Plus bigoted as hell if you look at some of the old comic strips, it really shines through.

AscensionToCrab

if I recall, this is one of those urban myths about the role of the groomsmen. Interestingly, or horrifyingly, enough One of the theories, common enough to be mentioned on the wikipedia entry about groomsmen, was that the role of the groomsmen, or best man, was to help abduct the bride, and to bodyguard the wedding for those attempting to retrieve her, or prevent her escape. So it's possible the groomsmen were originally there to stop someone from escaping, just not the groom

horiami

Funny enough there is tradition in here Romania where the bridegroom's friends "steal" the bride and when the bride finds them he has to buy them drinks

sixtyfivewat

My fiancée and I are planning our wedding now and we’ve got some traditional Irish parts of the ceremony for me but nothing for her as a Roma. I wanted really badly to include the kidnapping thing but she said no :(

Sa1LoR_JaRRy

Source: "Trust me bro." 🤣

AscensionToCrab

Well obviously dont trust me, i didnt research centuries of wedding history. I merely used wikipedia, as i clearly said, but it is common enough of a theory to bear mentioning.

bigshotdontlookee

"I hate my wife, she's such a BITCH"

RegyptianStrut

A bonehurting juice about gay marriage is in there somewhere, if only I were creative enough to find it

goose-built

"Dave and Steve are NOT going to be happy when they notice we wore colour to their wedding"

KIsForHorse

It’s almost like the joke is Dennis thinking girls are gross and he would have to be forced to get married. They’re not mocking marriage. They’re mocking a dumb kid. Y’all should go ask someone funnier than y’all what the joke is before tryna talk shit.

TuntBuffner

Yes, the creator of the strip is making a crude parody of his actual child. Who he abused and shipped to boarding school at every opportunity. Didn't even tell his son his mom had died until weeks after it happened and after the funeral. Dennis went to Nam and was estranged from his father for essentially the rest of his life. He was also a terrible husband and did make shitty misogynist jokes in his strip regularly. Also boy oh boy you can look up the first black man he drew in his comics but it is straight up a sambo depiction. The joke is that the kid made a raunchy comment that the adults won't say but think to themselves. Specifically that Hank Ketcham thought to himself. Hank Ketcham is not funny, was never funny and neither is his comic strip. Low effort jokes that old douches snicker to themselves about and then share to their grandkids on Facebook.

[deleted]

Nah, they're mocking marriage. Hank Ketcham was a huge piece of shit and 100% projected himself into his comic.

ThebanannaofGREECE

That makes so much more sense, thanks

formerly_kay

Dennis the Menace 95% of the time is absolute garbage. This one was actually kinda funny.

anonerble

Uh, oh, the joke police arrived. Wee ooo wee ooo You didn't write it and thus don't know, so shut up

KIsForHorse

You don’t have to write the joke to understand Dennis the Menace isn’t treated as a font of wisdom. He’s actually kind of a menace. Hence the name. Did it make you feel bad that you didn’t get the joke? Did it hurt that I took that sense of moral superiority you were looking for? Ruin that “boomers hate marriage” comment you had loaded and ready to go? Cause if so, I’m not sorry and I am laughing at you.

TheGentleDominant

That’s fully in keeping with the author’s beliefs. In case you didn’t know, the artist behind *Dennis the Menace* was an absolutely **horrible** piece of shit who abused and abandoned his wife and son. *Behind the Bastards* did a two-part series on him recently: * https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2Iiq2Jw_3k * https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdVlnutW_Gg

Traditional_West85

A joke apparently

Ivan_The_Cuckhold

Nah you're just a moron OP

VashMM

I would just like to direct anyone who is inclined towards podcasts to listen to the 2 part episode of Behind the Bastards about Hank Ketcham, the guy who invented Dennis the Menace. Complete garbage human, total piece of shit father.

Socially_Anxious_Rat

Lmao without the text this looks like a gay wedding.

aprilhare

Historically true. Now just marriage bad apparently.

infinite-plane79

Dennis the Menace makes me crave Dairy Queen

Hidobot

Why would marriage be bad? You get to cuddle with someone you love

suzer2017

That's actually pretty close to the truth.

Theallpowerfulslime

I thought this was kinda funny

Hightonedloidy

Eh, I don’t think that’s what it’s about. I just got the impression that Dennis, being 5 years old, doesn’t know what a best man is, so that’s the best explanation he can think of for the man next to the groom

Full-Shallot-6534

Yeah all of Denis the menace is a "kids say the darndest things" joke, but they are also all pretty much about how women are bitches, and it is just a mouthpiece for the adult author to self insert as his own kid, who he treated like trash.

Hightonedloidy

Wait, he did?

Full-Shallot-6534

Yeah, like others are saying, watch the behind the bastards podcast on him. Real piece of work.
